1. Call to Order

Coordinating Council member Dean Alicia Giovinazzo acting as CASSC Chair, called the meeting

to order.

2. Welcome

Dean Giovinazzo asked CASSC members to join her in welcoming Wendy Guifarro from the Hialeah Campus,

Student Services. She previously served on College CASSC, and will be replacing Roxana Chavez.

3. Comments by the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs & Student Affairs

Legislative Update

Legislative committee meetings are scheduled to begin in mid-December.

2017 Session will begin in March and end in May.

The Florida College System Council of Presidents will focus advocacy on increasing state dollars for

student success, specifically advising and supplemental instruction.

Policy issues that may arise include articulation, community college baccalaureate degrees and workforce

education.

MDConnect

We are in the stabilization phase of MDConnect implementation, meaning that some functions are fully

operational while others are under development or being rolled out and refined.

Continue to be patient as we learn about the system and how it functions.

Continue to collaborate with colleagues and super users to troubleshoot issues; it is very important that

system defects or issues be reported and ticketed for further research and corrective action when necessary.

Academic Update

The Bachelor of Science in Data Analytics was approved by The State Board of Education. This is our

first baccalaureate approval since before the legislative moratorium on new community college

baccalaureate degrees.

The closing of ITT has impacted tens of thousands of students nationwide, including thousands from their

campus in Hialeah. We are about to launch a webpage that will provide information for ITT students

looking for education options at MDC. For some, it will make sense for them to discharge any loans and

start anew while others may be best served as transfer students. As an open access college, let’s assist these

students in making a smooth transition to Miami Dade College.

Student Affairs Update

The US Department of Education announced that students may apply for their 2017-2018 FAFSA as early

as October 1, 2016.

Registration for the Spring semester starts on Monday, October 17. Students will receive e-mail

communication with their registration appointment day, date, and time.

Voting Registration Campaign, a Federal Judge extended the voting registration deadline to Wednesday,

October 7.
