Nepal is landlocked between India and China. It has 143, 351 square km of land, 16% of which is arable land. It contains 8 out of 10 of the highest peaks in the world, one of which being Mount Everest. Nepal has 3 different types of land; the sub tropical lowlands in the South, the central hill region and the Himalayas in the North. Nepal also contains 5 Development regions, 14 administrative zones and 75 districts2Agriculture in Nepal-Over 80% work in agriculture-Rice is the main crop -Lowlands: rice, wheat, barley, pulses, oilseed, jute, tobacco, indigo, opium

-Hills: rice, corn, wheat, barley, vegetables, mustard-Mountains: potatoes, barley and buckwheat as well as yaks and mountain goatsFlickr.comFlickr.com

Over 80% of Nepals population works in agriculture making up about a third of the countrys gross domestic product. Rice is the most widely grown crop in Nepal but also grown are wheat, barley, pulses, oilseed, potatoes, corn, jute, tobacco, indigo, opium and buckwheat and the production of these all vary between the different regions. Yaks are also used to provide milk, meat and wool and mountain goats provide pashmina.3Grain Cleaner-66 cm high, 77 cm long-good cleaning with minimal seed losses-gives precise separation -seed flow and air flow control-different screen sizes and patterns-1-20 kg per minute

The Agriculex ASC-3 seed cleaner is very small and compact. This image demonstrates how it works with the dirty seed being poured in the top and the dirt and chaff being separated by air flow from the seed into the dust sock allowing clean seed to fall to the bottom. It can clean 1-20 kg of seed per minute depending on the crop and the level of cleaning required. It comes with different screen sizes and patterns allowing for it to be tailored to work for a variety of crops. This machine costs 4, 326 dollars and will cost 2, 936 dollars to transport 20 of them by air with UPS from Guelph to Kathmandu making that equal to 146 dollars and 80 cents per seed cleaner to be transported.4Benefits to Canada

-Agriculex Inc. is located in Guelph, Ontario-equipment for agricultural research

Selling the ASC-3 seed cleaner to Nepal would be beneficial to Canada as the producer of this product is located right here in Guelph. This could potentially create more jobs in this company and possibly even open them up to another market other than research products.5Benefits to Nepal

www.nepal-school-projects.org-traditional threshing methods leave a lot of excess material-difficult to separate-can increase the quality seed-purchase of the ASC-3 provides a business opportunity

In Nepal, threshing is usually done without machinery which often leaves a lot of extra dirt and chaff mixed in with the seed. Purchase of the ASC-3 could provide a business opportunity and lead to a steady source of income. If someone in Nepal were to invest in a grain cleaner, they could do contract work for surrounding farmers increasing their quality of life as well as that of the farmers since they will now be provided with a much higher quality final crop.6Conclusions and Recommendations-better livelihood for those in Nepal-beneficial to Canada

Further Questions-how much will they pay for grain cleaning?-how many potential clients? -electricity?

The Agriculex ASC-3 seed cleaner is a product that could better agricultural production in Nepal. It can provide a better livelihood for farmers there are well as be beneficial to a Canadian company. Some further details to be considered for this to be a viable project however are issues such as; how much are farmers in Nepal willing to pay to have their grain cleaned and how many clients would one have to have to make it an economically viable option? Another concern would be the use of electricity and weather or not the customer would have access to this in addition to the fact that the plug would be made for Canadian outlets. Overall though, I believe this could be a great business opportunity.
