The design team have developed a new range of colours incorporating the mineral mica as this produces a subtle iridescent effect. By combining the mica colours and traditional enamel shades Royal Doulton’s artists can recreate the appearance of the fine luxurious fabrics traditionally used for ball gowns. for Christine’s swirling skirts, tones of pale slate grey and grey mica have been mixed and layered to give an exquisite satin like sheen.

Christine is destined to be the star of the red carpet in her chic one shoulder ball gown with a low sweeping cut bodice and asymmetrical pleated sash to the waist. Our artists have used a combination of specialised techniques to create a subtle textured effect for Christine’s bodice and co-ordinating brooch, bag and tiara. inspired by the pointillism technique favoured by 19th century artists such as Seurat, Pissarro and even van Gogh our ceramic artists paint on fine dots or dabs of colour including platinum grey, slate grey and white. After the first firing more white enamel colour is dabbed on to the selected areas to intensify the shimmer effect and the figurine is fired again.

from every angle Kathy is projects grace, radiance and poise and her dress combines classic and contemporary styles with élan. Chic details such as the cropped bolero jacket, elbow length ruffle cuffed sleeves and an intricately embossed and embroidered dropped waist bodice add a modish twist to the gown with its traditional flounced and swirling skirt.

Kathy’s long and graceful neck is accentuated by the sweetheart shaped line to the bodice top and the softly rounded lapels of the high collared jacket, whilst the cornflower blue of the bolero complements the paler shade of the dress and the delicate blue of the hand-made roses in Kathy’s bouquet. Neil faulkner’s design for Tracy is a tour de force in the way it combines contemporary and traditional fashion details. The azure blue gown has an alluring sweetheart neckline and cross-over styled bodice that’s finished with intricate lacing to the back. The softly gathered bodice ends at the hip with a delicate embossed floral brooch, whilst the folds and flounces of the skirt flare out from the centre back of the dress.

The Dancers of the World collection celebrates dance – a theme that’s long been important in the wider Royal Doulton figurine collection with belles of the ballroom and classic

Mexican Hat Dance HN 5643 Height 22cm 2935 014 RRP $199.00

The mexican Hat Dance, the Jarabe Tapatio, is often considered the national dance of mexico. it dates back to the mid 18th century and tells the story of a man trying to woo his sweetheart. During the 19th century this dance was considered immoral and was banned from public performance. in 1919 the famous Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova, added the Hat Dance to her repertoire following a visit to the country and from then on its position within mexican culture was assured.

Traditionally female dancers wear bright costumes trimmed with multicoloured ribbons based on a dress called the Chino Poblano. floral and plaited ribbon headdresses are worn and hair is tightly braided. Royal Doulton’s designers and artists have carefully recreated the style and joyful colours of this popular dress and the mexican Dancer is posed in mid dance, exuberantly swishing her skirts from side to side as she performs one of the characteristic movements of the nation’s Hat Dance.

There are several types of Thai dances ranging from styles that were originally only performed at the Royal Court to village dances inspired by folk tales. Typically dancers wear ornate costumes including brightly coloured dresses made from luxurious silks embroidered with golden thread, dramatic bejewelled headdresses and specially designed long fingernails. Using graceful, sensual and fluid movements – especially of the head, shoulder, hands and fingers - the dancers express different emotions and add emphasis to the story they are performing. Some of the dances require great flexibility and strength and only dancers who have trained from a young age are able to execute the difficult moves.

The Thai Dancer wears a traditional costume with a dramatic headdress and sumptuously decorated blue dress. Her expressive pose and extended fingers reflect the distinctive and elegant movements of the supple dancers.

American Tap Dance evolved from several dances including the Juba, Lancashire Clog and irish step dancing. it developed throughout the 20th century – first as part of vaudeville and latterly in films and on Broadway – becoming a spectacular and entertaining dance. famous for their tap prowess are stars such as Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, Eleanor Powell, fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly. Tap dancing costumes vary but many exponents select a top hat and tails although female performers often reject the trousers to reveal their legs; a walking cane is usually part of the dance.

The American Dancer wears a short black dress with a flared, swinging skirt and elbow length fingerless gloves and sports a black bow tie around her bare neck. Posed in mid step, holding a cane in one hand and with the other to her hat, American Dancer is an alluring figurine performing her routine with considerable panache.

italy has a rich heritage of folk dances with every area developing its own traditions and costumes. One of the most famous dances is the tarantella, and some say the dance originated as a way to sweat out the poison of a tarantula spider bite. it has an upbeat tempo which gets faster as the dance progresses. musicians play mandarins and often one or more of the dancers holds a tambourine or drums. The dance can be performed by one or more couples.

for the italian Dancer, Royal Doulton’s designers and artists have carefully recreated the colourful costumes typically worn by italian performers, which include a full, usually red, skirt, a lacy blouse and tightly laced bodice. With a green shawl wrapped around her waist and her hair swept up at the back of her neck, the italian Dancer holds a tambourine in her outstretched hand as she keeps pace with the exciting music.

The limited edition HN icons collection celebrates the centenary of Royal Doulton figures. As well as representing the most iconic sculptures of the past ten decades, the miniature figures honour the

role and creativity of Royal Doulton’s leading sculptors. The HN icons series also reflects the HN figure collection’s diversity of subject and breadth of style ranging from pretty ladies and

character studies to prestige subjects.

Darling HN 5648Height 9.5cm 2983 100 RRP $79.95

Originally released in 1913

Charles vyse’s sculpture, Darling, is the icon of the launch collection of 1913. vyse studied under Charles Noke in the 1890’s before moving to London where he became a very successful studio potter. This enchanting study of a young child dressed for bed was christened by Queen mary during her visit to the Royal Doulton factory in April 1913. When she saw this figure, then known as ‘Bedtime’, she cried ‘Oh! isn’t he a Darling’, and it was immediately re-named in her honour, becoming HN1.

At just 10cm in height the new commemorative Darling conveys all the charm and innocence of vyse’s larger model - from the sweet expression on the child’s face to the hand gently placed below the chin. And, just like the original figurine, it is subtly decorated in pale blue.

it was Charles Noke, art director from 1914, who had the vision to revive and renew the Staffordshire figure tradition and several of the early figurines, including the Jester, were his own work. Given Noke’s enthusiasm for Jesters inspired by theatre and historical precedent, and the popularity of the theme for character figurines throughout the 20th century, it’s the perfect icon of the early period.

The Jester was produced in several versions and colourways but it’s Noke’s first design inspired by a medieval court jester that is used in the commemorative edition. The fool perches on a column clasping one leg to his body, he’s dressed in a cowl and tunic over breeches in a striking black and white chequer decoration. Details that Noke included in his original such as the three cornered fool’s hat with bells to each point and his mock sceptre – or bauble – have been meticulously remodelled in miniature scale.

The Sunshine Girl by Leslie Harradine is typical of the figurines evoking the spirit of the times that he created throughout his almost 40 year career. His work was broad in subject matter and style, but it is his fine and delicate modelling skills that have ensured his figurines have enduring appeal.

Bathing at open air lidos or at the seaside was the vogue in the 1920’s for fashionable young women. Revelling in their new found confidence and independence, they wore wear brightly coloured bathing costumes, turban style hats and took gaily decorated parasols to protect themselves from the ravages of the sun on their fun day out. The commemorative miniature of the Sunshine Girl is inspired by the second version of Harradine’s original model, and is predominately decorated in orange and black with green highlights.

in 1952 the most famous Prestige figure of the 20th century was introduced. Princess Badoura dates back to 1924 when a model was shown at London’s British Empire Exhibition. The original was by Henry Stanton, a teacher at the Art School local to Doulton’s Burslem factory, but Doulton designer Harry Tittensor and ceramic artist francis van Hallen Phillips are also linked to this majestic design.

Princess Badoura is one of the most enchanting tales of the Arabian Nights. The story of her meeting Prince Camaralzaman and their later adventures inspired illustrator Edmund Dulac and it was his imaginative drawing of the Princess on an elephant ceremonially progressing to her wedding that provided the basis for this sculpture. its rich and intricate decoration, meticulously recreated in the commemorative miniature, reflects the exotic fantasy of the tales but it also reveals the superb artistic skills of Royal Doulton’s designers and artists.

The Polka, launched in 1955, has been selected as a tribute to Peggy Davies to reflect her personal love of all forms of dance and in recognition of her ability to interpret and express graceful movements in her work. These qualities combined with the exquisite faces she modelled ensured the popularity of her figurines with collectors worldwide.

The Polka dance originated in Bohemia and became popular throughout Europe in the 19th century. in this study Peggy Davies builds up the fluid movements of the dance through the swirling actions of the skirts whilst the pose of the dancer with her body tilted to one side and head to the other conveys the rhythm. The miniature icon recreates these elements of the original study along with details such as flowers to the front of the dress and the sweet expression on the dancer’s face.

mantilla, part of the Haute Ensemble series, was modelled by Eric Griffiths and launched in 1974. Eric, as director of sculpture, was responsible for encouraging a young team but also for developing techniques and ideas for figurines. The five Haute Ensemble figurines demonstrate a remarkable quality of the figurine collection – that somewhat Avant Garde sculptures could occasionally feature alongside more traditional styles and subjects. The slender, tall figurines blended femininity with subtle realism and also incorporated new decorative techniques.

The miniature commemorative mantilla retains all the distinctive traits and details of its larger original; from the haughty demeanour of the Spanish Señora to the delicate chiffon material of her shawl and the layered underskirts peeping out from beneath the ruffle trimmed opening of her red dress.

isadora modelled by Peter Gee was launched in 1986 and it was the personal favourite of all the work this talented sculptor created. Peter joined the modelling team aged just 17 in 1973 and once his training was complete he created many different sculptures for the HN figurine collection including pretty ladies, character studies and limited editions.

in creating isadora, Peter was inspired by the work of former Royal Doulton sculptor Leslie Harradine, in particular his figurines Butterfly, marietta and Lady with Shawl. Peter wanted to create a graceful sculpture that reflected the freedom and vitality of the 1920’s and especially the natural movements of one of the decade’s most expressive dancers, isadora Duncan - in whose honour the figurine was named. The miniature commemorative edition has been expertly painted by hand using traditional shading techniques to recreate the shimmering lilac fabric of the original 1980’s study.

The Prestige figurine Columbine and its pair Harlequin were both modelled by Douglas Tootle and launched in 1982. Doug’s contribution to the figurine collection was varied and included models for the images and Reflections collections, a series of pretty ladies wearing costumes inspired by the extravagant flounces and frills of the victorian era and striking Prestige subjects.

Columbine, a crafty serving girl, is one of the characters in the comic cast of the italian Commedia Dell-Arte. Her portrayal continues one of Royal Doulton’s most important traditions, established during the 1890’s, of inspiration from the stage. The commemorative miniature recreates the flamboyant rococo style of the original study, whilst the beautiful colours and the exquisitely executed floral details on her skirt and blouse are a tribute to the hand painting skills of Royal Doulton’s ceramic artists.

The Prestige figurine Knight of the Crusade by Shane Ridge was released in 2009. Shane joined Royal Doulton as a tableware modeller in 1987 but once his forte for figurative sculpture was discovered he was involved with many collectable projects including animals, Bunnykins, Character Jugs and figurines.

Shane’s talent is communicating a story through his sculpture and the stately portrait of the Knight of the Crusade is characteristic of his work. The subject also continues a Royal Doulton tradition, established in the first decade of the HN figurine collection, of prestigious and imposing sculptures of historical characters – examples include The moor, King Charles and Jack Point. This miniature commemorative recreates all the fine details of the original Knight study including armour, helmet, cape, shield, sword, leather belt and the red cross on the front of the tunic.

The Prestige figurine Henry v at Agincourt by Alan maslankowski dates from 1997. Alan’s great achievement in his Prestige sculptures was adding dramatic intensity to the subject he depicted, but, on a smaller scale he was also successful and his sensitive understanding of humanity was revealed in his studies of children, elegant portraits of women and robust historical characters. His favourite subjects, however, were animals and so many of his designs include a cat or dog. for Henry v, Alan chose the moment the King addressed his troops before the battle began. Alan added urgency by posing the horse in a rearing stance, by the action of its sinewy front legs and the expression in its eye, and by the determination on Henry’s face. This extraordinary feeling of power along with the bright colours and details of the medieval royal battle dress are replicated in the miniature commemorative edition.
