The Transmission of Faith is Always a Communal, Ecclesial Event

We are once again pilgrims on the road to Emmaus…Our heads are bowed as we meet the Stranger who draws near and comes with us. As evening comes, we strain to make out His face while he talks to us, to our hearts. In interpreting the Book of Life, He takes our broken hopes and kindles them into fire: the way becomes lighter as, drawing the embers together, we learn to

fan the flame. If we invite Him this evening, He will sit down and together we shall share the meal. And then all those who no longer believed will see and the hour of Recognition will come. He will break the bread of tears at the table of the poor and each will receive manna to their fill.

We shall return to Jerusalem to proclaim aloud what He has whispered in our ear. And no doubt we shall find brothers and sisters there who will greet us with the words: “We too have

met Him!” For we know: the mercy of God has come to visit the land of the living! Fr. Thomas Roscia, CSB

Watch. Move. Expect opposition. Be poor in spirit. Change. Recently, our collaborative offered parishioners six (6) Lenten Faith Formation sessions for adult parishioners. The series was centered around a DVD series conducted by Bishop Robert Barron and entitled, Conversion. In the last session of this series, Bishop Barron presented the five (5)

steps that led to the Conversion of the Magi. While the Magi were observing the world around them, they noticed a new star. They did, after all, come from a tradition of examining the skies to find reason, meaning, and purpose in life. Together, they decided to follow this new star, which they came to believe would lead them to a great king. The Magi appear prominently in the book of Daniel, who, as chief of the Magi, was ruler of the entire province of Babylon. The Magi were powerful men in the very powerful Babylonian and Persian empires. They were a governing body, the Megistanes, which means "the great ones" or "lords." Their power was in fact only exceeded by the absolute kings themselves. Their cavalry was known for defeating the Roman army. They would have come thundering into the area of Jerusalem on Arabian stallions carrying weapons. There could have been scores or hundreds of people accompanying them, which would explain Matthew’s Gospel (2:3) that tells us that when the Magi visited Herod to ask him about the birth of a new king: “…he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” Before answering the Magi’s questions, Herod consulted his chief priests and teachers of the law and asked them where the Christ was to be born. They replied, “In Bethlehem in Judea.” Herod, fearful of any power that might diminish his own, called the Magi aside secretly and sent them to Bethlehem, admonishing them to report back to him. But, as we know, the Magi were warned of Herod’s deceit by an angel and returned to their homeland by “another route.” Later, when Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under. This was in accordance with the time of the new king’s birth, which he had learned from the Magi. After they left Herod, "the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was." The Magi were filled with awe and wonder in the presence of Jesus and they bowed down in worship of Him. They realized that Jesus, God, was greater than they were. They were indeed poor in spirit. We can assume that after meeting Jesus, truly and personally, they returned to their homeland forever changed. Today, we, too, are called to turn from our own ways and daily routines so that we might follow Jesus’ ways more closely each day. Conversion for today’s Christians is a daily experience. We, like the wisemen, must be attuned to the world around us, watching and expecting the many ways that Jesus tries to gain our attention throughout our day. The Christmas Star led the Magi to the place where Jesus was. Are we watching for those things that will lead us closer to Jesus today and every day? Are we willing to move closer to him by following His Way, His Truth, His Life everyday? What blocks our efforts to grow closer to the Lord? Like the wisemen, who avoided a return to Herod, we too must avoid those people or things that stand in opposition to the Lord’s will in our lives. We must remain poor in spirit, knowing that God is greater than any person or thing, that He must be the center of our lives. Following these steps: watching, moving closer to God, expecting and preparing ourselves for opposition to God’s will in our lives, while remaining poor in spirit, acknowledging that God is our King and Savior, then we, like the Magi, will be forever changed…day by day.

(Adult Faith Formation Video Series: Monday, May 1st) immediately following the 9 am Mass at Saint Thomas More lower church hall, we continue our series, entitled, Untold Blessings, with Bishop Robert Barron. Coffee and munchkins provided.

Prayer Shawl Ministry meets this Tuesday, May 2 at 1:00 pm in Saint Thomas More lower church hall.

The Divine Mercy Committee extends its appreciation to everyone who assisted and attended our regional feast celebration. The Liturgy was beautiful and expressed the true gift of Mercy which comes to us in the Sacraments of Healing: Eucharist and Sacramental Reconciliation. Next year’s hosting parish will be announced at a later date.

Pine Street Inn Help Needed! We have been blessed for over 35 years with a committed group of volunteers, now coordinated by Mrs. Anne d'Entremont, who bring food to the clients of Pine Street Inn on the last Tuesday of the month. Recently, the Knights of Columbus have provided drivers to take the food and volunteer servers into Pine Street. After decades of service, there is an urgent need for more food (desserts and Shepherd pies) and volunteers to serve at the Inn. Cars leave the Saint Thomas parking lot at 3:45 pm each month and return to the lot at about 6:00 pm. If you can help in any way to keep this ministry alive in our collaborative, please call or email Maureen to discuss ways to become involved. Any help is greatly appreciated. And a special thank you to Anne and the team for their dedication and witness!

set up a recurring payment to Sacred Heart or St. Thomas More Parish. Please make sure on the memo line to include either Sacred Heart or St. Thomas More,

your envelope number and the word “Offertory”.

This will ensure that we credit your account correctly and your personal banking information stays with your bank.

Your recurring payment helps us greatly, especially during the off seasons when you may be traveling. Kindly call Kathleen Smith, Business/Finance Manager, at 781-337-6333, Ext 112, with any questions.

Beginning the weekend of May 7th we will begin to send out details on our Increased Giving Program with a three-fold goal: to satisfy our current obligations to operating and programming expenses, staffing; invest in

deferred and scheduled maintenance, renovations and repairs; and grow in the Disciples in Mission capacity for the New Evangelization to our families and individuals for Life Long Formation of the Faith
