What is the Six Book Challenge?

• An invitation to read six books or other material and record reading in a diary

• Library support for choosing books• Creative activity such as reading groups• Incentives and a certificate for those who read

six books (participation certificate for less)• 18,000 registered in 2011 through public

libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons

What can it achieve for students?

• Increased motivation to read and learn more• Improved skills – reading, writing, speaking

and listening• Better awareness of offer from college and

public libraries • Development of a new reading habit• Enjoyment of reading!

What can it provide for college libraries?

• A practical tool for partnership development with other library sectors, eg public libraries

• A new way of working with tutors across the college, eg ESOL, Functional Skills, Foundation Learning, Media Studies
