Veni domine Felix Mendelssohn, Op.39, no. 1

Veni, Domine was the first motet in the Three Motets for female choir and organ composed in 1830 by Felix Mendelssohn (Opus 39 No. 1). He was inspired by his experiences in Rome in 1830. Mendelssohn liked to watch the sunset from the top of the Spanish Steps, which offered a stunning view across the Tiber to the great dome of St. Peter’s (designed by Michelangelo) with the sun setting behind it. Standing there in front of the 15th-century church Trinità dei Monti, he could hear a chorus of cloistered French nuns singing the Office, as a kind of soundtrack to the glorious sunset. This experience suggested a set of motets for women’s voices. (Steven Ledbetter)

Small ensemble: Cris Bocanegra, Melissa Medina, Paula Boderek Janis Parish, Rachel Hamlin

Translation: Come, Lord, and do not delay! Forgive the wrongdoing of your people, and bring back the dispersed to your land. Raise up, Lord, your power to save us. Come, Lord, and do not delay!

laudate pueri Laudate pueri

Laudate pueri is the second motet in Three Motets inspired for women’s voices in 1830. Felix Mendelssohn actually wrote a replacement for this work: Laudate pueri Dominum (Opus 39, No. 2-2) on August 14, 1837 long after leaving Rome, expanding the accompaniment to include strings.

Translation: O praise the Lord, ye children, praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord from hence forth now and forever.

Psalm 13 Johannes Brahms/arranged by Gerhard Track

Psalm 13 was originally composed for female chorus and organ/piano in 1859 by Johannes Brahms. The libretto was taken from the Martin Luther (1483-1546) Bible. The original composition was expanded by Brahms several years later to include strings. The arranger, Track, made this version so the music would be accessable to three part female or male choirs using the same score. This vibrant music is well suited for female voices.

Translation: Lord, you are worthy to receive praise and honor and might, for you have created all things, and by your will they have their being and are created.

Mixed Chorus

Hear My Prayer Felix Mendelssohn

Cris Bocanegra, soprano

Hear My Prayer is a Christian Anthem for soprano solo, chorus and organ or orchestra composed by Felix Mendelssohn in Germany in 1844. The first performance took place in Crosby Hall, London, on 8 January 1845. The accompanist on that occasion was organist, composer and teacher Ann Mounsey (1811–1891). She later married the librettist of the work, William Bartholomew (1793–1867) who also collaborated with Mendelssohn over his oratorio Elijah. The passage "O for the Wings of a Dove" ("O könnt' ich fliegen") is particularly well known through the recording made in 1927 by boy soprano Ernest Lough. The text is derived from Psalm 55

festival te deum Benjamin Britten, Op.32

Melissa Medina, soprano

Festival Te Deum was composed in 1944 for the centenary Festival of St. Mark’s Church in Swindon – an Anglo-Catholic church with a strong choral tradition which continues to this day. This is Benjamin Britten’s second setting of the Te Deum and completely different from the C major one he wrote eleven years earlier. The structure of the piece is also

different from the earlier work. A lengthy first section in unison which, while carefully notated in a variety of time signatures so that it feels as if it has the freedom of Gregorian chant, is accompanied by static organ chords in a regular 3/4 metre. It is a really imaginative approach, and is actually very simple to perform. While the organ chords continue, the choir breaks up into simple imitative phrases at ‘The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee’ but soon returns to the unison lines of the opening. The central section (‘Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ’) has fanfare-like phrases from the choir interspersed by short dramatic outbursts from the organ which then subside into a rhythmic piano section with an important ostinato pedal part for the organ. These two ideas are then mixed together before the opening organ chords return and a treble/soprano soloist sings a lovely line. The choir joins and takes the canticle to its gentle conclusion with the soloist having the last word.

This setting is more straightforward than the earlier one. It does, however, have rhythmic issues which have to be mastered fully to do it justice. The choir, for instance, must not be pulled off course by the different time signature for the organ part in the opening and closing sections. It is all very straightforward in reality, it just looks complicated. Britten has thoughtfully annotated the vocal rhythm throughout the organ part for safety. The organist needs to be a confident musician. Where Britten may write eminently practically for the abilities of a parish church choir, he does not make similar allowances for the organist and the accompaniment is key to the success of a performance of this and many other such works. (Repertoire note by Paul Spicer)

Abendlied Josef G. Rheinberger Op 69 no.3

Rheinberger's Abendlied ("Evensong") takes its text from The Gospel according to St. Luke 24:29. The context, (Luke 24:13-35) is the encounter on the road to Emmaus between two of Jesus' disciples and the Risen Christ. Cleo'pas and his companion have yet to be convinced that Christ has risen and while in a state of despondency meet a "stranger" on the road to Emmaus. They fall into conversation with him and tell him of their disappointment in the man whom they had hoped and believed was the Messiah. Jesus' response is to cite scripture showing that the Messiah would inevitably suffer the fate he had suffered. All of this takes time and as night will soon be upon them they invite their new friend to stay with them and eat rather than face the dangers of travelling alone and at night. He accepts their invitation and as he breaks bread with them two things take place: (1) They suddenly realize who he is; and (2) He vanishes.

All of this is background to pointing out that Rheinberger has taken his text out of context and perhaps inevitably, the meaning has mutated from the original meaning — in which two of Jesus' disciples not realizing, who he was obeyed the laws of hospitality by pressing their "new acquaintance" to spend the evening with them rather than endanger himself, to something along the lines of "Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know not how …". (He's neither the first 'nor the only composer to make this mistake – I suppose Henry Francis Lyte's hymn "Abide with Me" which is based upon the King James Version ("Abide with us; for it is toward evening,") is the best known example from the English speaking world).

Does any of this matter? (In a way not!) It may well have nothing to do with the original meaning of the scripture upon which it is based but musically it's very beautiful indeed, no surprise that it's Rheinberger's best known composition. It's based on a piece he wrote in 1855, or to put it another way when he was 16 and features a challenging shift from F major to A minor and a beautifully melodic line which highlights the entreaty of the disciples. (Mark Fomireland)

neue liesbeslieder waltzer Johannes Brahms Op. 65

The Neue Liebeslieder differs from the conventional Liebeslieder in the fact that the ensemble sections of the work are separated by two solo songs for the individual members of the quartet. Although this piece was originally written for a quartet, the Neue Liebeslieder is often performed by a larger chamber ensemble and soloists.

The better known and more liked portion of this fifteen song cycle are the seven quartets. Throughout these ensemble sections, Brahms uses innovative techniques to portray a central idea. For example, in the first song, measures 16-21, he depicts the rocky shores by the repeated cry of "zertrümmert", which, translated into English, means "wrecked". Brahms also enhances the text "Well auf Well" (wave after wave) with octave leaps in all four parts in measure 4 and 29. In song number 8, Brahms's use of the musical rest in the middle of the words mixed with the chorus singing dolce helps to create a gentle atmosphere.

The eight solo sections of the Neue Liebeslieder differ from the ensemble parts in that the soloists illustrate different characters who behave in certain ways when it comes to love. The soprano is a female who continuously has no luck when it comes to men; the alto is depicted as a female who has suddenly abandoned her lover; the tenor is portrayed as a male who is selfish and irresponsible when it comes to sexual relationships with women; and the bass is one who is hopelessly in love with his married lover.

The final song in this cycle moves away from the subject of lovers and puts the spotlight on the muses and thanks them for inspiring not only the author (Goethe), but also all of the artists in the world. With this change in subject comes the change in meter. Brahms moves away from the standard 3/4 meter and changes to 9/4. The music is also much more contrapuntal than the previous songs in this cycle. At the climax of this song in measure 16, the piano drops out and the choir sings a cappella and moves from the dominant key back to the tonic key of F. J. A. Fuller Maitland, in Groves Dictionary, wrote: One of the most beautiful of all the quartets not in waltz-rhythm, is the epilogue to the second set of ‘Neue Liebeslieder’, a true lyric for four voices, with a gentler style of accompaniment than is provided for the rest. (Maitland, 1904)

A favorite with concert and festival choirs since its publication in 1993, this delightful work is based on a Romanian folkdance. The text, comprised of various syllables throughout (Ra pa ra pa; ta ka ta ka; di ri di ri, etc.), creates a stunning choral effect that will give a very special, festive feeling to a performance!

i want Jesus to walk with Me arranged by Alice Parker

This spiritual was first sung by people who were walking a hard path through life, and were crying out for help. To help us sing this song today we bring to mind the image of a chain-gang to paint the heaviness of the footsteps which brought forth the strong beat of the music. Only when the singers feel this in their own bodies can the song come to life. (A.Parker)

Be thou My Vision, the song and the story Dallan Forgaill/arranged by John Rutter

St. Patrick (385-461 AD) was a man zealous for the things of God. As a missionary, he defied an Irish King's edict that restricted the lighting of candles on Easter Eve. King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one was allowed to light any fires until a pagan spring festival was launched by the lighting of a fire on Slane Hill. Patrick chose to honor God in spite of the threat of death. King Logaire was so impressed with Patrick's brave devotion, he let him continue his missionary work unhindered. An 8th Century Monk, Dallan Forgaill penned the words to Be Thou My Vision, as a tribute to St. Patrick's wholehearted loyalty to God. The hymn was translated from Irish to English in 1905 by Mary E. Byrne. In 1912, Eleanor H. Hull arranged the song into the verse most commonly found in English hymnals today. The music to accompany the lyrics is an ancient irish folk tune called Slane. John Rutter originally wrote the arrangement we sing today for the Cambridge Singers.

In the summer of 2011, Dr. Yarrington will be leading workshops for the Oklahoma ACDA, the Colorado ACDA, and the National Methodist Music Week at Lake Junaluska.

At HBU, his choirs have distinguished themselves for their artistry and range of literature. In a recent residency, composer, Morten Lauridsen said of the choral work: “this was among the finest, both on a college and professional level. Their sense of pitch, vocal color, and interpretation of the music is very high.”

Education at HBU nurtures the whole person - mind, body, and soul, and the new Belin chapel is an integral part of students' HBU experience. The addition of the Belin Chapel and Recital Hall marks the first time in University history that a Chapel has been located on campus.

The circular exterior features custom masonry, decorative columns and an impressive cross that spans nearly the entire vertical height of the building. Located along the perimeter of the Chapel’s interior, custom acoustical drapery encased in metal panels can be opened and closed to balance sound throughout the interior. The 12 acoustical stamped and painted steel panels had to be assembled on-site. The halo-like reflector ring that suspends from the stair-stepped ceiling above the stage is much more than an attractive architectural feature. Circular plastic reflectors adorning the ring resonate sound while encircling pendulum lights illuminate the stage below. A retractable projector screen can be lowered from the middle for presentations. At 19ft. deep and 57ft. wide, the spacious stage is perfect for small concerts as well as one act plays.

The Smith Concert Pipe Organ was built by Orgaues Litourneau Limitee, a Canadian based organ builder with more than 100 installations in Canada, England, Austria, New Zealand, Austrailia, and United States. This organ contains 57 stops, 58 ranks, and 3,261 pipes. It serves as a magnificent addition to the Morris Cultural Arts Center, enhancing worship and music performance, and bringing beauty, joy and celebration to the entire HBU campus.

One of Houston’s oldest non-profit choral groups, the Bay Area Chorus has brought heartfelt performances to Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast since 1965. Long before the population of the Houston metroplex expanded to the shores of Clear Lake, this thriving choral group had already built a following among local residents and in surrounding communities.

More than 70 singers bring unique interests, ethnicity and cultural experiences to the group and represent a variety of professions as diverse as Houston itself. In addition to performing choral masterworks, this all-volunteer chorus also programs traditional holiday music, historic and contemporary classical choral music, spirituals, folk songs from around the world and Broadway favorites. Continuing growth in enrollment resulted in the formation of the Bay Area Women’s Chorus in the fall of 2009. The Women’s Chorus performs at all season concerts and had the honor of presenting a concert at the 56th Annual Convention of the Texas Choral Directors Association Convention in San Antonio in July, 2011. Recent guest artists for BAC concerts have included Dr. John Lienhard, founder of KUHF’s The Engines of Our Ingenuity, legendary composer/arranger Alice Parker, composer/song leader Nick Page and Houston gospel recording artist Barbara Johnson Tucker with pianist Phillip Hall. The Bay Area Chorus appears on the DVD Weston Noble: Perpetual Inspiration, distributed internationally by the Hal Leonard Corporation.

K & G Beauty SalonCarol Barwick Sixteen years of singing with the Bay Area Chorus

made Carol Barwick a staunch supporter of this outstanding community chorus. After retiring from 30 years as a public school choral music teacher, she began working to make the dream of establishing a Bay Area children’s chorus a reality. With the support of the Bay Area Chorus, the Bay Area Youth Singers began rehearsals and performances in the spring of 2008. Carol serves as the volunteer executive director of this music education organization. Carol is also the founder and director of the Summer Music Camp for elementary and middle school students, co-sponsored by the Bay Area Youth Singers, Bay Area Chorus, and University Baptist Church. She maintains an independent piano studio and is a frequent accompanist in the Clear Lake area. Her second career as owner/president of B & B Steel Products (a small manufacturing company) began in 2005. Carol hopes that her experiences as a musician and businesswoman help her serve effectively on the advisory board of the Bay Area Chorus.

linda fletcher Linda Fletcher is the Director of Fine Arts for the

Pasadena Independent School District. She has devoted 35 years to music education, teaching elementary music and intermediate and high school choral music. Linda received her Bachelor of Music Education with vocal emphasis from Sam Houston State University. She earned the Master of Science in Education Administration degree from the University of Houston/Clear Lake. Linda is an advocate for the arts in education and in all aspects of life.

sam Harris Sam Harris is in his twenty-sixth year of public

education as Director of Academic Enrichment and Fine Arts for the Galena Park Independent School District. Prior to assuming this position in 2000 he spent fifteen years as the choral director at North Shore High School. Sam received his Bachelor of Music

degree and his Master of Music degree from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University), in San Marcos, Texas. Under his leadership the North Shore High School Choral program grew from thirty-five students to more than five hundred and twenty-five students winning multiple Sweepstakes each year at UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest as well as trophies at regional and nation music competitions. In 1994 the North Shore Chorale was named “Grand Champion of Texas” in the American Classic Music Festivals and performed as a state honor choir at the 1996 Texas Music Educator Association State Convention. Mr. Harris brought this same commitment to excellence to his tenure as Director of Fine Arts as he supervises a 120 member staff in music, art, theater and dance and a budget just shy of one million dollars for the Arts education of 22,000 students. Even though every school in GPISD is a Title I campus with a population that is 70 percent economically disadvantaged and 78 percent Hispanic, GPISD Fine Arts organizations consistently out perform their more affluent suburban peers at UIL competitions. “The Arts are for everyone, not just those with the economic means to achieve according to conventional wisdom.”

Brian worrell Music has always been a huge part of Brian Worrell’s life. He sings in addition to playing trumpet, guitar, classical guitar, and piano — he says he doesn’t play any of them well. His love for music has been passed to his two children, ages six and three, who love to sing and dance around the house while banging anything that remotely resembles an instrument. Brian’s other hobbies include playing pickelball, kayaking, and traveling. He and his wife recently began a mission to visit all of the National Parks as well as all seven continents. He is hoping to live past 100 in order to fit all of it in. Brian became a fan and supporter of BAC after watching several of his friends perform in the chorus. In addition, Brian works as a REALTOR with Prudential Gary Greene and also helped to redesign the BAC website.
