Colgate is slated to play at both Western Michigan and Syracuse in 2020.

• Colgate and Lehigh. Lehigh and Colgate. When it comes to Patriot League football,

these two program have ruled the school -- especially over the last two decades. Lehigh leads the way with 12 conference titles, fol-lowed closely by Colgate with 10. And the programs have been neck and neck through-out. See chart at right.

• Colgate is looking for its first back-to-back wins over Lehigh since the Raiders won

three in a row from 2007-09 ... The Raiders capped their opening series of five noncon-ference contests without a point scored in the first quarter (45-0) and without a lead in any game ... Last year, Colgate over its first 10 games outscored the opposition 67-0 in the opening quarter and didn’t trail until Army scored a first-quarter TD in Game No. 11 ... Colgate is 0-5 for the first time since the 1995 team finished 0-11 ... Lehigh was 0-5 two years ago when the Mountain Hawks posted a 41-38 decision over the Raiders.

• Colgate-Dartmouth Highlights: Alex Mathews started for the first time this sea-

son and led the Raiders with 74 yards on 19 carries ... Nick Draught finished with career highs of five catches for 49 yards ... Another first-time starter, Milton Braasch II, posted six tackles ... While Colgate’s three points scored were a season low, the Raiders posted season highs with 20 first downs, 151 rushing yards, 69 total plays and 35:45 time of possession ... What hurt Colgate the most was a season-high of nine penalties and a 2-of-6 effort on fourth down.

• Defending champion Colgate topped the 2019 Patriot League preseason poll, with

Raiders junior quarterback Grant Breneman and senior defensive lineman Nick Wheeler selected as the Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. The Raiders never have won three consecutive Patriot League champion-ships, but they are predicted to do just that in 2019. Colgate picked up 12 of the 14 first-place votes and outdistanced second-place Holy Cross. Georgetown was picked third, followed by Fordham, Lehigh, Lafayette and Bucknell. The 2002 and 2003 Raiders also won consecutive Patriot flags, but the other six titles are scattered across the previous 22 seasons. Colgate’s 10 football championships are second only to Lehigh’s 12.

• Colgate leads the way with 10 players on the All-Patriot League Preseason Team

(listed left). The Raiders placed five on of-fense, three on defense and two on special teams. In addition to Breneman, other first-teamers on offense are senior tailback Alex Mathews, senior tight end Nick Diaco, senior offensive lineman Jovaun Woolford and ju-nior offensive lineman Jack Badovinac. The defensive members alongside Wheeler are senior linebacker Nick Ioanilli and senior defensive back Abu Daramy-Swaray. Senior Chris Puzzi is the All-Patriot League Preseason kicker and Daramy-Swaray also earned a spot as return specialist.

• Nick Wheeler is this year’s Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He fin-ished second in the Patriot League last season with both nine sacks and 17 tackles-for-loss.

He already is a two-time All-Patriot League First Team selection and last year earned All-Amer-ica honors from four sources, including First Team from the AFCA. Wheeler needs three sacks to tie the Colgate program record of 28½ set by Kelly Robinson from 1979-81.

• Senior tailback Alex Mathews became the 34th Colgate Raider to top 1,000 rush-

ing yards for a career. Mathews in the Maine game rushed 11 times for 52 yards and a touchdown. He’s up to 1,075 yards on 259 attempts, a 4.1-yard average. Mathews and quarterback Grant Breneman are the active leaders on the team with 14 touchdowns apiece.

• Grant Breneman is this year’s Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He finished 126-of-204 passing for 1,605 yards, with six touchdowns against four interceptions

on his way to All-Patriot League First Team honors. Breneman led the Patriot League with a 61.8 completion percentage and a 133.64 pass efficiency rating.

• A trio of Colgate Raiders are included on the 2019 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. Nick Wheeler was named to the First Team defensive line, Abu Daramy-Swaray earned a

spot on the Second Team secondary and Jack Badovinac is a member of the Third Team offen-sive line. All three were named to the 2019 Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

• Abu Daramy-Swaray and Nick Wheeler are on the 2019 STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for Defensive Player of the Year. Grant Breneman headlines the Walter Payton

Award Watch List for top Offensive Player.

• Chris Puzzi’s 38-yard field goal to beat James Madison in last year’s home playoff also set a program record. It was Puzzi’s 15th made field goal of the season, breaking the previous

mark of 14 set by Jonah Bowman in 2014. Puzzi finished 15-of-17 for 88.2 percent, setting another school mark for season percentage. Puzzi stands 26-of-32 (.813) for his career and is chasing the school records for made field goals (35 by Mike Powers, 1983-86) and percentage (.756 by Bowman, 2013-16). The senior also tied a Colgate record last year at Fordham by con-necting on nine consecutive made field goals.

• Colgate head coach Dan Hunt is now under contract through the 2023 season. Hunt through five seasons already is mentioned in the company of Colgate coaching legends. He just won

his third Patriot League Coach of the Year Award and carries an overall coaching record of 36-28. But he’s 31-18 in the last 49 games despite facing at least one FBS opponent in each of his five seasons – which makes him 31-14 against the FCS in that stretch.

• Colgate quarterback Grant Breneman keeps having a hard time explaining just how awe-some his experience was at this summer’s Manning Passing Academy. Breneman spent

three full days and part of a fourth on the Nicholls State campus in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He was one of 45 QBs from across the country invited to assist Archie, Cooper, Peyton and Eli Man-ning at pretty much the coolest football camp in America. “It was an unbelievable experience,” Breneman said. “I can’t really put it into words but everything from the group of college quar-terbacks who were there, interacting with the Mannings and the other big-name guys who were on site. There aren’t many places where you get that caliber of quarterbacks and tal-ent in one space.”

2019 COLGATE FOOTBALL SEASON REVIEW

Villanova 34COLGATE 14Aug. 24 -- Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton

Villanova 0 27 0 7 -- 34Colgate 0 0 7 7 -- 14

HAMILTON – Colgate showed second-half signs of life but a big second quarter from Villanova proved too much to over-come in a 34-14 setback here Saturday. The Wildcats scored 27 points in the second quarter, helped by a pair of Raider turnovers that the visitors turned into TDs. Villanova capped the period with scoring drives of 91 and 61 yards to lead 27-0 at halftime. Colgate, which began the game ranked 13th nationally but with five new starters on offense and six on defense, finally found its footing in the third quarter. The Raiders put togeth-er a 12-play, 68-yard drive that culminated with Nick Draught scoring his first collegiate TD on a 10-yard strike from Grant Breneman. Then the Raiders drove 77 yards in eight plays to pull within 27-14 with still 13:26 showing on the clock. Breneman carried it over from the 1-yard line on fourth and goal. But Villanova iced the game with a 10-play, 78-yard march that ate 4:40 off the clock. Danny Smith completed the drive with a 9-yard QB keeper midway through the final period. Garrett Oakey led the Raiders with 69 receiving yards on five catches, and Nick Gill caught four for 28. Nick Draught hauled in three receptions for 43 yards and the TD. Malik Twyman led Colgate with six receptions (41 yards) and also carried eight times for 47 yards. Abu Daramy-Swaray posted 11 tackles for a career high.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nick Gill’s journey to carry on a legacy of Colgate Football came full circle at Air Force. Colgate’s senior wide receiver caught a 13-yard touch-down pass to put the Raiders on the board late in the third quarter of a 48-7 loss to Air Force of the FBS Mountain West Conference. Gill’s father, Brad, Colgate Class of ‘84, played for the Raid-ers in 1982 and 1983 under head coach Fred Dunlap. Brad Gill died in 2014. So it was quite the moment for Nick Gill and a nice tribute to his father when he scored his first collegiate touchdown at Falcon Stadium. “It was nice to have everything thing come full circle and a great feeling to score my first college touchdown,” Gill said. “I’ve worked really hard, put the time in with the quarter-backs in spring and summer. I’m happy it paid off.” Air Force scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead into halftime. It was 48-0 before Colgate erased the zero from its side of the scoreboard on Grant Breneman’s TD pass to Gill with nine seconds left in the third quarter. Colgate’s touchdown kept the Falcons from shutting out a third straight FCS opponent in their season opener. Air Force blanked VMI 62-0 two years ago and Stony Brook 38-0 last year at Falcon Stadium.

Colgate 0 7 3 0 -- 10Wm. & Mary 17 0 7 14 -- 38

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary rode a fast start and a fast finish to a 38-10 defeat of Colgate. After spotting the hosts 17 points in the opening quarter, Colgate pulled within 17-10 on Chris Puzzi’s 21-yard field goal midway in the third. But William & Mary’s Bronson Yoder re-turned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a TD that ended the Raider comeback attempt. Colgate played nearly the entire game without quarter-back Grant Breneman, who was injured on the first Raider se-ries. Jake Froschauer was 12-of-21 for 109 yards and rushed 11 times for 21 yards in Breneman’s absence. He was inter-cepted twice. William & Mary opened TD, field goal and TD on its first three drives. The second touchdown was a 27-yard pass from Hollis Mathis to Jordan Lowery that Colgate’s Abu Daramy-Swaray appeared to intercept in the end zone. But it was ruled a dual reception and the touchdown stood. Colgate responded right before halftime with a five-play, 43-yard scoring drive capped by Malik Twyman’s 2-yard run. The Raiders were within 17-7 at the break. Colgate then took the opening drive of the second half and marched 64 yards in 15 plays, consuming 7:44 off the clock. The Raiders had to settle for a 21-yard Chris Puzzi field goal, but it was a 17-10 game and momentum had shifted to the Colgate sideline.

2019 COLGATE FOOTBALL SEASON REVIEW (Con’t)

Maine 35COLGATE 21Sept. 21 -- Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton

Maine 7 14 14 0 -- 35Colgate 0 7 7 7 -- 21

HAMILTON – A 35-21 scoreline doesn’t usually scream de-fense, but for Colgate the proof was in the numbers. The Raiders allowed No. 12 Maine just 317 yards of total offense in a 35-21 defeat on Crown Field at Andy Kerr Sta-dium. Progress was made. The Black Bears entered as the top passing team in the Co-lonial Athletic Association and third nationally at 379.7 yards per game. Colgate limited Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson to 8-of-19 for 165 yards and a TD. He was picked off by Col-lin Heard – his second in as many weeks – and the Raiders cashed that in for a TD. Maine’s final total offense figure was 317, or three yards fewer than Colgate. Maine entered No. 1 in the CAA and 14th nationally at 470.0, so progress definitely was made by the Raider defense. The difference for the Black Bears was two exceptional kickoff returns from Earnest Edwards. The Maine senior carried the opening boot of the second half back 100 yards to pay dirt for a 28-7 cushion. Then after Alex Mathews scampered 18 yards for a Raiders TD midway in the third, Edwards struck again from 95 yards and Maine staved off a late Colgate charge.

Dartmouth 38COLGATE 3Sept. 28 -- Memorial Stadium, Hanover, N.H.

Colgate 0 0 3 0 -- 3Dartmouth 14 10 7 7 -- 38

HANOVER, N.H. – Colgate closed the door on Part I of the 2019 season in a 38-3 defeat to Dartmouth. The Raiders went 0-5 against a formidable schedule and a formidable injury list. Dartmouth should challenge for the Ivy League title again this season after going 9-1 a year ago. And Saturday night they were facing Colgate’s No. 3 quarterback in Noah Rothman. Rothman earned his first start and finished 13-of-30 pass-ing for 130 yards, with an additional 56 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Alex Mathews also started for the first time this season and led the Raiders with 74 yards on 19 carries. Nick Draught finished with career highs of five catches for 49 yards. Another first-time starter, Milton Braasch II, posted six tackles. That was one fewer than team leader Nicholas Ioa-nilli. While Colgate’s three points scored were a season low, the Raiders posted season highs with 20 first downs, 151 rushing yards, 69 total plays and 35:45 time of possession. What hurt Colgate the most was a season-high of nine penal-ties and a 2-of-6 effort on fourth down. The Raiders finished their opening series of nonconfer-ence contests without a point scored in the first quarter and without a lead in any game. Colgate went to 0-5 for the first time since the 1995 team went 0-11.
