This is a special year for our school since we are celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Firstly, we thought creating this e-magazine would be a good way of keeping the history of our school alive. It would also connect past, present and future generations in an interactive way.

Secondly, we have decided to take advantage of this technological tool because everyone has access to it and it is the best way to reach all our community members. Besides, we are carrying out our annual project using computers and English for communicative, educational purposes.

Page 12: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

We would like to thank those people who have contributed with the magazine, sharing information, pictures and anecdotes with us!!!.

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart is a congregation founded in Lyon, France in 1821 by the father Andres Coindre. The expansion of this congregation outside France was fast and in 1846 Brother Policarpo sent the first brothers to the United States. From there they went to Canada.

In 1903, a lot of brothers had to leave France and moved to different European countries.

At the beginning of 20th century, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart arrived in Uruguay and Argentina..

Page 16: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

In 1927 the Brothers of Sacred Heart arrived in Latin America and the first country where they stayed was Uruguay. The first ones to arrive were Valero, Ciriaco, Segundo and Justino Brothers. They founded the first institute in Trinidad, Flores a year later.

In addition, they went to Florida in 1932, and they finally came to Montevideo in 1935.

There were two schools next to “ Our Lady of Sorrows “ church; one of them called “Medalla Milagrosa” belonged to Capuchinas Sisters and it was for girls. The other one, called “San Luis” belonged to the Sacred Heart congregation and it was for boys.

“Corazonistas” started their activity on March 11th 1935 in charge of Donato, Severino and Carmelo Brothers. The headmaster was Brother Elías (José Ibisate) and there were 30 students.

After that, the school became bigger and the building opposite the church was bought. In 1965 the first generation of secondary fourth graders began in the new high school.

A few years later, they bought a piece of land in Manga, which was called “Parque Coindre”.

Page 17: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

In 1976 the Sisters at “Medalla Milagrosa” decided to leave and the school became part of Brothers of Sacred Heart congregation. As a result, it was their first mixed school in the southern part of South America.

The school kept on growing and in 1996 and 1997 students started attending 5th and 6th grade at high school. To house these new generations, the second floor of the current high school building was built.

A very special moment for the community was the year 2002, when the school celebrated the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Uruguay and Latin America.

The ceremony was attended by many people, including Brother Bernard Couvillion and delegates from other Latin-American countries. One of the most significant elements of it was the “Time Trunk” that will be opened for the hundredth anniversary in 2027.

At present the religious community is formed by Brothers Gonzalo, Avelino, Daniel and Emilio who, along with more than 100 lay collaborators, educate approximately 700 pupils.

In the late 1920´s , Uruguay had an excellent economy, one of the best in America. With regards to politics, our country had a democracy. The world called us "THE AMERICAN SWITZERLAND ""THE AMERICAN SWITZERLAND " But this situation finished when the crisis started.

But not everything was a disaster. In 1930, our country held the first football world cup, organized by FIFA. It was between 13th and 30th July 1930. FIFA decided to organize the championship in Uruguay to celebrate the centenary of its independence.

Page 19: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

To hold this important event, we built Centenario stadium and called it this way . Footballers like Piendibene, Nasazzi, Petrone were idols, but that same year, a man appeared and became people´s idol in Uruguay and Argentina. He was Carlos Gardel, a very famous singer who sold a lot of discs all over the world.

Some of his most popular songs are:

•Return•The day that you love me•Downhill•Student loves•Students•Bitterness•Her eyes closed•My dear Buenos Aires•When You're Not

Page 20: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

Right now he is deputy director. He has worked in the school since 1986. At the beginning he was a Biology teacher .

“ This anecdote occurred more than 20 years ago at Sagrado Corazon High school. At that time the person in charge of the administration section was the well-known and remembered Brother Fermín. One day a man interested in choosing a high school for his son came to the

school. Brother Javier, who was the headmaster and had his office where the

secretary is now, was the one that received that man. When the man got into the office, he took a gun and pointed at Brother Javier making him walk to the administration office where he ordered Fermin to give him all the money. But Fermin wasn’t scared at all and he told the thief: "Listen to me, why don't you start working instead of robbing?" The outlaw, who was scared but at the same time amazed, answered him to stop saying non sense and demanded Fermin to give him the money, something that finally he did. Then, the thief ran away quickly, took a taxi and left. Some months later, he was caught by the police.”

She started working at the school in1999 as a preceptor.

“I recently met a Chilean –Ruben- (year 2006) who is nowadays my

husband and he lives in Uruguay. But in that moment he was living in Chile and

I was living here, we had just begun our relationship. One day Antonio and

Gustavo told me at school: ‘Rose, have you seen what happened in Chile?’ I answered: ‘No, I

haven’t ’ and they looking concerned, said there was a terrible earthquake.

I was worried, and in that moment I didn’t search it on the internet, the only thing I did was running to Alfredo’s store, buying a telephone card to call Ruben. He answered the phone, I asked him “ how are you? And how is your family? , and how is the country? He was surprised and said, why

are you asking me that? In that moment I discovered it was a joke of my workmates.

It was terrible, because I was just getting to know Ruben and I was impulsive, also my workmates crossed the line, hahaha!

Who would say that years later a terrible earthquake would happen in Chile, and just a week after we had come from Chile. Who would say it?”

Page 22: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

He is one of the Brothers at Sagrado Corazon High school. He has worked in the school since 2001, in the secretary office. The title of this anecdote is “Broken telephone”.   “It happened some years ago. It was a winter midday. It had been

raining all day. I was at the entrance of the school. The telephone rang, I answered it and it was Camila’s mother, who was a first grade student.

The mother told me to tell her daughter to go home straight away. In the meantime, I answered other calls, all with certain urgency because of the rain.

When I talked to Camila, I told her that her mother had called and had asked her not to leave the school on her own and to wait for her. During all the afternoon, Camila waited for her mother at school. I saw that at some moments she played table-tennis, she bought something at the canteen, she walked up and down and I talked to her more than once. She was bored.

In 1994, Ricky Martin was the most popular Latin singer and all the girls were in love with him, so it was surprising when a giant poster announced the arrival of this pop idol at the Festival of Brother Polycarpo at school that October. The news was unbelievable, but in a previous festival held at school, Jorge Nasser and his group Niquel had come, so we were hopeful that it would happen.

The day came... the gates were suddenly opened at Marsella Street and a big black limousine slowly coming into the school was floodlit. At that moment, everyone stood up and rushed. It was possible! He was really there! Two bodyguards wearing suits and sunglasses came out of it . We were very shouting “ Its true, it´s true,". And then I approached and realized that he was actually a shameless 4th grade student with a wig.

He even performed on stage, singing and dancing several hits accompanied by some young girls who made the choreography.

Ricky Martin didn’t come to school, but we all had fun and no one got angry. It was just a joke that made the party special and has been remembered for many years.

Page 24: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

It was like this In 1992 the high-school had a ground floor and a first floor

where the seven classrooms and the computer room were. There were only first to fourth year groups.

The computer room used to be where the music room now works, but there was no corridor, so we had to go up the stairs to go to the canteen and through it we arrived at the 4th year classroom, where the library is now.

There were several small fruit trees next to the avocado tree and a larger yard in the middle of the cement pitch which until last year was a dirt one ). That is to say that we had to play football dodging.

There was no laboratory, so we made experiments in class. The Secretary office was in where the headmaster office is today.

The uniform was a suit and tie ... and we used to wear it! told by Emilio

Rodrigo.

Page 25: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

Last year, we were talking to Emilio when we saw a new student who looked concerned, going out of the toilet. We asked him what was happening and he replied that something strange had happened to him while walking to high school. He saw a gun lying on the street curb, he took it because he thought that it could be dangerous and threw it in a rubbish container.

The student kept on looking at his hands and we asked him why he was so worried about them .He replied that he had washed them so that no trace of the gun remained on his hand !! We laughed at him and explained that his fingerprints were on the gun and not the other way round. Finally, we decided to call his parents and the police because the gun could be linked to any crime .

told by Antonio López.

* What are first graders going to prepare for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the school?

We have worked on it in two subjects. In Spanish , we have interviewed people who have

attended Primary and Secondary school at Sagrado Corazon. We have asked them questions such as what their school times had been like and which anecdotes they remembered. The teacher has given us a question guide. We could also record the person, take pictures and take notes about their answers.

In Music, we have prepared some folders about

what was the high school, clothes, the music that people listen to and manners were like from 1950 to 2010.

Paula Hernández.

We have worked in different subjects for this

celebration. In music, we were 7 groups of 6 people, we

have made a report about the bands that have been popular since the school was founded . We wanted to see how they have evolved.

In Arts, we have made paintings representing the 75 years of the school. There was a winner: Paula Alvarez.

Finally, in Physical education the teachers have thought about doing something but we haven´t started yet, so we don’t know if we'll finish on time.

Agustina

Frascheri.

Teenagers are worried about one of the most important and most dangerous problems in the world.

Everybody knows it with the name “drugs” but not every drug is known by this name.

Take for example some medicine, cigarettes, and alcohol as well.

It is very common to see teenagers in the street having a bottle of beer or wine in their hands after a dance party or a birthday party. This is a kind of drug which affects their behavior and their health too. After drinking so much alcohol they feel dizzy and they don´t remember what they have done.

Page 42: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

Sometimes they not only drink alcohol but also they smoke a lot. It seems as if they didn´t know what they were doing.

Smoking is bad for yourself and for the people who are near you. Cigarettes are not allowed in schools, university, hospitals, offices, and I think this is the best rule I have ever heard.

On the other hand there are people who take lots of medicine and this is drug too.

People who suffer from headaches take lots of different pills to feel better and after some time they depend on them. The same happens to people who can´t sleep.

Page 43: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

Personally we think that teenagers worry about drugs such as cocaine or marihuana and this is because more and more young people are taking them without knowing these drugs can cause physical and mental serious problems and sometimes death. This is a problem everybody has to talk to their families or doctors who are the ones that can help us.

It is important to face this problem as soon as possible.

Page 44: Colegio y Liceo Sagrado Corazón Reducto (Montevideo) "Now and forever! emagazine" 5ºH 2010

Networking is one of the most common

attractions for teenagers nowadays. It has

evolved over the years. Today, we are able to

communicate with persons from other parts of

the world through instant messages. And, we can

see and listen to each other using this technology. It is incredible!

Years ago we used to write letters to get in contact with a relative…

and he/she had to wait about

two months to receive it!

These are some of the phrases that are never out of a conversation among teenagers when they first meet.

Teenagers use this networking to

communicate and, it is also a hobby for them.

They spend a lot of hours in front of their

computers. Most times, they spend too much

time on it.

Facebook is the most visited social network of

our days.

IS A SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITE LAUNCHED IN FEBRUARY 2004 THAT IS OPERATED AND PRIVATELY OWNED BY FACEBOOK, INC., WITH MORE THAN 500 MILLION ACTIVE USERS IN JULY 2010. USERS CAN ADD PEOPLE AS FRIENDS AND SEND THEM MESSAGES, AND UPDATE THEIR PERSONAL PROFILES TO NOTIFY FRIENDS ABOUT THEMSELVES. ADDITIONALLY, USERS CAN JOIN NETWORKS ORGANIZED BY WORKPLACE, SCHOOL, OR COLLEGE.

"Urban tribes are groups of people in urban areas who have some kind of close association based upon similar lifestyles or activities"

"Urban tribes are young city people that gather in relatively small, fluid groups. These groups share common interests that are, in general, different from the interests of mainstream culture". (Michel Maffesoli)

They are made up by groups of people – usually young, with a distinct common identity: the same aesthetic codes, the same identity symbols, the same rules, the same language, the same music… A whole ideology! They are a reflection of what they love or what they hate and of their own instincts. We can find them in any city in any country.

THERE ARE SEVERAL TRIBES IN URUGUAY...AMONG THE LEAST POPULAR WE HAVE:

•THE GOTICOS (GOTHS),“NEW ROMANTICS”, OR DARKSTHEY LOVE WEARING BLACK CLOTHES, AND GLOOMY ACCESSORIES (RELATED TO DEATH) LIKE CROSSES OR SKELETONS.  IT WAS ORIGINATED IN THE UK IN THE 70S, AND SINCE MOST OF ITS FOLLOWERS GREW UP, THE FOLLOWING GENERATIONS FORMED NEW TRIBES GIVING WAY TO NEW STYLES AND NAMES.

•THE ROLLINGAS THEY ARE THE ROLLING STONES’ FANS AND OTHER ARGENTINIAN ROCK GROUPS, AND ARE AMONG THE LARGEST TRIBES. THEY WEAR TORN JEANS (OVERALL JEANS ARE A MUST) BLACK T-SHIRTS WITH THEIR FAVOURITE BANDS PICS PRINTED ON THEM.  THEY CARRY A SHORT STRAIGHT FRINGE LOVE DRINKING “MATE” AND SPENDING TIME WITH FRIENDS, PLAYING THE GUITAR, AND SMOKING ORDINARY CIGARETTES AS WELL AS MARIHUANA ( NOT ALL OF THEM, OF COURSE).   THEY’RE FRIENDLY AND MOSTLY PEACEFUL  THEIR MOTTO IS “TODO TRANQUI” = “EVERYTHING EASY/QUITE” IN ENGLISH..

•EMOS THIS IS THE NEW TRENDY TRIBE WHICH HAS GAINED MANY FOLLOWERS IN B.A..  THEY HAVE PIERCINGS AND, UNLIKE GOTHS, THEY LIKE TO WEAR  FLUORESCENT ACCESSORIES, OR DARK CLOTHES WITH A TOUCH OF ANY BRIGHT COLOUR.   THEY ARE THE FOREVER  GLOOMY, SUFFERING, AND DEPRESSED TRIBE.   IT’S ALL ABOUT “EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS,”  HENCE THE NAME EMO.   THEY HAVE TO BE SKINNY AT ANY COST.   THEY CUT THEMSELVES AS A WAY OF  “RELEASING” THEIR INTERNAL PAIN.  SINCE IT’S ALL ABOUT PAIN, WHEN ANY EMO CRIES HIS PARTNER HAS TO CRY TOO, AND AS A SYMBOL OF COMMUNION, THEY MIGHT CUT THEMSELVES TOGETHER.   THEY ARE THE FLOGGERS’ FOES, AND THERE ARE USUALLY FIGHTS BETWEEN THESE TWO TRIBES.

•FLOGGERS THIS URBAN TRIBE HAS ORIGINATED IN ARGENTINA, AND ITS MEMBERS COME FROM A SOCIAL NETWORK CALLED FOTOLOG WHERE TEENS UPLOAD PICTURES OF THEMSELVES AND POST COMMENTS.THEY’RE REGARDED AS SUPERFICIAL AND FRIVOLOUS.  THEY LIKE ELECTRO MUSIC, WEAR COLOURFUL CLOTHES, AND HAVE LONG BANGS COVERING ONE OF THE EYES. THERE’S NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE CLOTHES BOTH SEXES WEAR.  THEIR MAIN AIM IS TO BECOME POPULAR.MANY OF THEM, LIKE MARCO THE LITTLE PRINCE, HAVE BECOME QUITE A CELEBRITY AND ARE HIRED BY SOME DISCOS TO WALK THE CATWALK, SIGN AUTOGRAPHS, AND HAVE THEIR PHOTOS TAKEN WITH FANS.  MALES ARE CONSIDERED TOTALLY METROSEXUALS.

•THE CUMBIEROS THEY LISTEN TO TROPICAL MUSIC OR CUMBIA, A MUSICAL GENRE ASSOCIATED WITH MARGINAL CLASSES, AND SADLY WITH CRIMINALS, THOUGH THIS IS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE. THEY ABSOLUTELY HATE FLOGGERS. THEY ALWAYS WEAR A CAP, BAGGY T-SHIRTS AND TROUSERS, AND LOVE WEARING THE MOST EXPENSIVE TRAINERS.
