Want to is an intention followed by a verb:

Example: I want to ride a bicycle.

• Affirmative forms (+):

I, you, we, they want to

She, he, it wants to

• The negative forms are:

I, you, we, they don’t want to

She, he, it doesn’t want to

• Questions (?):

What do you want to do this afternoon?

What does Carl want to do for his birthday?

• Would like is more formal than want.

(‘d like)

Example:

I want to have pizza for dinner. (=a child to a parent)

I’d like to have some chips with my fish, please. (=customer to waiter)

• We use would like with all subjects.

• The negative form is: wouldn’t like

• Questions: Would you like to work as a waiter?

WOULD PREFER TO

We use would prefer to say what we want to do in a situation (not in general).
