Mme Lachapelle is retiring after a 30 year career in the district. We wish her the best in this new chapter of her life. Mme Small is also leaving the district to return to Victoria. We are sorry to see her go and wish her the best with her young family. We have hired a new teacher to work in some of the job share positions. Her name is Carly Whitmore. Carly was teaching in Port Alberni and is currently on maternity leave. She will join our team in September. Welcome! Landscaper This is the third year of being a WILD BC school and our project is to create an out- door classroom. The staff met with Luisa Richardson, our WILD BC Facilitator, looked at some mod- els, and brainstormed ideas. Our next step is to consult with a Landscaper to guide us in designing a final plan. So, we are looking for a Landscaper who would be interested in helping our school. If you happen to know someone, please contact the school. School Vision / Mission We are in the process of reviewing our school vision. The purpose of the vi- sion is to determine our fundamental purpose and to clarify our priorities which will help us focus on what is important. Our vision must take into account the district beliefs and the main ideas of the future strategic plan. Our old vision was: École Willow Point Elementary supports our growth in a safe and caring environment by helping us love learning, care for each other and try to do our best every day. We surveyed students and staff to find out what is important for them at school. The data is being collated and we grouped the responses into main ideas. We would like to share that with you and ask for your input as well. You will receive an email asking for your feedback around the following ques- tions: What are we trying to accomplish at École Willow Point? What are our main priorities? Indigenous Lessons: Keisha Everson, our Indigenous Language and Culture Teacher is back with us for two weeks. On her first week, she has visited each class and did a lesson on ocean and for the second week, she will take each class outside and do a beach walk. As we are already into our planning for next year, this is a reminder that our school is currently full for September. If you are planning to have your child not return to our school, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can keep our numbers up to date. Sincerely, Louise Guèvremont and Rachel Black

FRENCH SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Our French Scholastic Book Fair will be held during the last week in May.

This will be an excellent time for your students to pick up some new books for home reading . It is also a perfect opportunity to get some books for the summer to help your child practice their French reading skills.

Please note that this Book Fair is an excellent fundraiser for our school library as we receive many new

books with the profits we earn

Specific dates and times of the Book Fair will be announced later this month.

Thank you for your support!

Reminders

Late/Absent: If your child will be late or absent from school, please call the attendance line and leave a message 923-4311

Phone calls: We have been receiving a lot of phone calls to the office lately , to give messages to students. Sometimes it is very difficult to track down a student in the school or the Secretary is busy, particularly at the end of the day. Please try and make arrangements before your

child goes to school regarding pick up, playdates etc. Students will not be able to use the phone after school to arrange playdates.

Parking Situation

With the construction on Larwood continuing,

the busses have to use the turnaround to pick up

and drop off students. Please do not park along the side of

the “in” entry to the parking lot (North entry) as the bus has

difficulty making the turn. Thank you for your co-operation.

Hopefully it will all be over soon !

Beware Of Bats!

About 10% of bats in British Columbia are infected with Rabies. Rabies is a virus that is spread to humans from sick bats through bites, scratches, saliva or touching. Rabies is a serious disease and will cause death if not treated quickly.

To prevent rabies: Vaccinate your pet dogs or cats.

Do not touch bats… ever.

If you are bitten or scratched by a bat, wash the wound well with soap and water.

If you find a bat in your house, leave the room right away. Call the Communicable Disease Program or HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1 (a free call).

If you have any contact with a bat, including situations when a bat is in the room and you cannot exclude any possible bite, scratch or mucous membrane exposure (e.g. in a room with a bat, sleeping in a room/tent with a bat), immediately call the Island Health Communicable Disease Program, or go to the nearest hospital for a Rabies vaccination.

Play It Safe With Your Smile

Every year, sporting accidents cause broken teeth and injury to children’s mouths. Mouth protectors help prevent injury to teeth and lips during sports such as ice and field hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, la-crosse and rugby.

Adults can be good role models by wearing helmets and mouth guards to prevent sports injuries and encour-aging children to do the same.

Mouth guard kits are available at sporting goods stores for under $20.00. Ask the store about the best guard for the particular sport. These mouth guards are quick and easy to fit, but are not suitable for use over brac-es or other oral appliances. For a custom fit mouth guard, contact your dental office.

Accidents can happen. If a tooth is knocked out, there may be blood. This is upsetting to the child and the adult attending to the emergency. Reassure the child, take a deep breath yourself, then:

Find the tooth if possible, hold by the crown and place in milk or water Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply cold compress Call a dentist immediately

Play it safe with your family’s smile.

KEEPING ACTIVE CHILDREN HYDRATED

When children are playing they may need to be encouraged to drink to prevent dehydration (not enough water in the

body).

Water is the best choice to keep children hydrated.

Recommended: Water, milk, fortified soy, almond or rice beverage

Not Recommended: Sports drinks*, energy drinks

(*Sports drinks are high in sugar and are only for those exercising and sweating for longer than an hour.)

Keep active children hydrated:

Offer water often, especially during activity.

Provide water or milk and watery snacks like watermelon, cucumber or smoothies after activity.

Avoid juice and give fresh fruit instead.

Is your child’s water bottle safe?

Use stainless steel bottles or plastic bottles that are designed for reuse. Disposable plastic bottles that are filled with

water, pop, sports drinks, etc., should not be reused.

Wash water bottles every day!

Wash water bottles well by hand each day. Dishwashers do not clean all parts of the inside of the bottle. Recycle any

bottles that show signs of wear such as scratches, dents, or a cloudy, cracked appearance.

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S HEARING

Some hearing facts…

Children have more trouble hearing in noisy environments than adults! This is because their nervous sys-

tems are not mature. Children learn best in quiet, both at home and school.

Noise or loud music can hurt your child’s ears! Firecrackers are really dangerous – they can cause sudden

permanent damage. Power tools, lawnmowers and even loud music can damage the delicate inner ear.

When your child is around loud noises, protect them with earplugs or earmuffs or better still, avoid the noise.

Do you have concerns about your child’s hearing? Contact a Public Health Unit Hearing Clinic to arrange a

hearing test for your child.
