… our Rebel family in the upcoming year when we gather on Reeds Lake in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We did have at least one pleasant surprise in the return of a local Junior Skipper. Kirsten Petro crewed for

Jim Quiniff whom she raced against in 2005 in a borrowed Mark I that

lacked a vang. Kirsten exclaimed that Jim is the most patient and polite skipper she have ever had the pleas-ure of sailing with. It helps having a well equipped Mark V. Kirsten works in the local club’s learn to sail program which is run by her mother. In addition to

finding Jim a crew, Tom Ehman was also gracious enough to find your editor one as well. I’m certain that Tom Kimball, who is Tom Ehman’s Interlake crew, did not find me quite as polite nor patient as sir Jim. But, he said he had a good time and I appreciate all the help I can get on and off the water!

… award as our regatta sportsman. Taking a good

look at the Coldwater group photo, we can certainly identify our future Rabble editor sporting that “deadline is here” expression!

Missing from our annual festivities this year were both our Canadian and Greenwood Lake contingents to-gether with a host of folks from each fleets represented on Portage Lake. Had they all been able to travel, the regatta could have reached 35 boats easily. And look at the absolutely exquisite natural light show you all missed. Hope we are all better able to enjoy visiting

A Conversation with …

At the Des Plaines Regatta on August 8th and 9th, we discussed the jib window size and location at the be-hest of Greg Fisher who was following up on Fleet 2 comments. He has indicated that after receiving your information that North Sails has increased the over all window size in their Rebel jibs for the 2010 season. The extra area, lower in the sail, should make viewing the race course easier for more skippers and crews re-gardless of their hiking position or physical size. North Sails expects to have the newest jib at the Clark Lake Invitational on September 26th and 27th. Greg also wanted to remind those who are interested that fall is nearly here and as of September 1st North One Design will be offering a 15% discount plus no ship-ping costs through October first. For more info on North Rebel sails see their new ad on page 18 or at www.rebelsailor.com or www.onedesign.com.

And, for the record, everyone should know that neither Dan Hockenberry or Karel Vorel “knew” or is it “remembered” that the jib had a widow! Oh my...

Mark and Peggy Quiniff were instrumental in provid-ing us with many of the photographs we used in this issue. You see Al couldn’t make it and Sharon had schedule conflicts limiting her opportunities to take pictures. Thanks again Peggy and Mark.

A thank you to Doug Blewitt who sent us his Rabble collection. Doug sailed in Des Plaines from 1966 to 1995, he sold his Rebel to Bill Blaine in 2000. Bruce

COMMODORE’S CORNER As I begin my term as Commodore I would like to thank our Outgoing Commodore, Al Vorel, for doing such a great job, these last two years. Al, Karel and the other officers have been showing me the ropes, and I will try to build on their success. Well another sailing season has hit its peak. Portage Lake had a great time. Committing a week out of our busy schedules can be difficult, and we appreciate eve-ryone showing up, pitching in and making the event the success that is was. Thanks to all the staff at Portage Yacht Club for all their efforts. Tom Ehman and his no nonsense team of race officials managed to get all nine scheduled races in, even though all of Tuesday was lost to no wind. The impromptu rules seminar put on by Tom and Clark was an enlightening add on to the event. On the water, com-petition was close with many boats scoring firsts, in the individual races. Congratulations to Elliot for, once again, claiming the championship title! Seeing so many boats at Nationals makes me hopeful for the continued strength of our class. Many of our fleets have added new boats, in the last few years. At Lake Opeka we no longer struggle to get enough boats for a qualifying start. Now is the time to help those new members, get their game on, so they will be confident enough to travel to other club’s regattas. The fun is not over yet. Fall sailing can often be some of the best sailing weather all year. Fleet captains start thinking about getting your reports into Bruce for the next Rabble. There is one more event on the 2009 ...

… Rebel Tour. Clark Lake is hosting the Tim Dowling Memorial Regatta Sept. 26/27th. It is al-ways a good time and I can’t think of a better way to finish off the season. We would also like to take a moment to congratulate Mindy Faulkner, Phil’s daughter, on receiving her doctorate in microbiology from Harvard this sum-mer. In fact that is one of the reasons Phil was my crew at the Nationals this year as Phil was able to help Mindy move to Cornell where she took up a research position. John _____________________

Greetings to your families.

We are so proud to be a part of the Rebel Family.

Today we read about the Junior Races at Portage online and were so pleased to see the competition. Upon returning home, Mark and Peggy Quiniff filled us in on the excitement and fun of the Senior Nationals.

Jim and I just want all of you to know how much we appreciate the Des Plaines Yacht Club and the Na-tional Rebel Association. We thank you for all the years of fun you provided to us and we wish all of you Happy Sailing. When you visit Des Plaines, you are most welcome to come by and say hello. Special congratulations to the new Commodore, John Washburn.
