Hello!A very warm welcome to this special edition of Zoo Matters.

2013 is a landmark year for Colchester Zoo, as we celebrate our 50th birthday. It has remained throughout those years very much a family affair, as the park was opened by my great Uncle Frank (Farrar) in 1963, with my immediate family taking over operation in 1983; so we also celebrate a 30 year milestone!

Over the remainder of 2013, our guests will have the opportunity to delve into the history of the park and help celebrate through our public art event, Stand Tall. Of course the park has changed beyond all recognition during those 50 years, so this is a good time for reflection; to take stock of what we have achieved. I would not, however, want us to lapse into a mood of too much self-congratulation or benevolent navel-gazing! It is a time also to look to the future; the next 50 years and what we can achieve from this point forward.

Zoos have generally changed their focus and ethos, particularly since the early 1980s, becoming more conservation and education focused, specialising in many disciplines including animal husbandry, health, nutrition, behaviour and records keeping. The quality of exhibits has consistently improved, and I like to think that we have remained at the forefront of this, as well as providing services and facilities that are amongst the best of any UK zoo. We must, however, keep striving to improve, evolve and progress.

Our continued development is vital, both in terms of the husbandry and welfare of the animals, and also to ensure we remain a significant player in the leisure and tourism sector. Our ability to perform as a competitive business is fundamentally linked to our goals and aspirations.

We must continue the development of stimulating exhibits for our animals, whilst ensuring a positive experience for our visitors, in an environment that showcases the fauna and flora, as well as investing in the services and facilities we provide.

None of this is possible without your support; our heritage is very much steeped in the people that have walked through the gates. It is always with great pleasure that I see successive generations of families coming to the zoo to enjoy a day out. Our young visitors are our future, and I hope we continue to see future generations follow.

In June this year, we hope you will join us to toast our half century. I would like to convey my most sincere thanks to all of you that have been with us during that time.

Since our last update on Nafari, our spotted hyena cub, you may have noticed he has grown up very quickly!

Nafari continues to spend more time with his dad, Abu. He is really playful and loves to chase Abu and Kalabi about. He is also becoming very confident, and will now come into the compound when called, so the enclosure can be cleaned. He has also been hand feeding from the keepers; we have no doubt he will end up like his dad and enjoy a few tickles from staff when he gets older!

Kalabi could be pregnant again, and if so, due around April, at which point Nafari will be spending even more time with Abu until Kalabi lets him get involved with the new cubs!

On Thursday 6th September 2012, we were delighted to welcome young Zuli into the world; our baby pygmy hippo born to Venus and Freddy.

Young Zuli enjoys lying under the waterfall and swimming in the pool with Venus, and is proving to be very popular with visitors. Zuli is fit and healthy and growing up fast! We are hoping that our pygmy hippos will continue to breed successfully in the future, and that we will therefore be able to continue helping to preserve this magnificent species.

We are delighted to have hatched a Komodo dragon on the 18th January 2013. This is the first time that this species has been bred here, so is a very exciting first for Colchester Zoo!

The egg was laid by Komodo dragon Mutu in May 2012, after a natural mating. The hatchling is doing well and is being kept off show for now, under close observation.

The reptile keepers are currently making plans to reintroduce Mutu and Telu in the next few months, with the intention of breeding from them again; in the hope that we will be able to report more breeding success in the later part of 2013.

Raymond Sawyer Conservation CentreVisitors will be able to enjoy the Japenese-influenced gardens and pools as Koi Niwa opens at Easter 2013!

For the first 3-4 weeks, there will be goldfish inhabiting the waters as we wait for the water to mature, prior to introducing a number of Koi carp and Japanese bitterling into the pools.

Japanese decor and materials have been imported to ensure that this enclosure is authentic. The two large pools are assisted by two state of the art filtration systems, which are visible to our visitors, with interesting information and facts about how they work.

4

Acrylic complete! The larger pool of the two includes a waterfall, and will contain a number of Koi Carp species.

The acrylic for Koi Niwa was manufactured in Thailand. It weighs a colossal 2.2tonnes, is an astounding 165.1mm thick, and measures 1.2metres by 9.45m. Colchester Zoo drafted in a team of specialists to help with installation.

See the Koi Niwa filtration system first hand through the viewing windows!

This filtration system is a gravity fed system, with two bottom drains in the pool. Both act as a flow to the concept filters. Once the water has passed through these filters, it will then be pumped through the UVs (ultra-violet), and then returned to the pool via the waterfall and a mid feed. This system is also looped in with two surface skimmers. These skimmers remove surface debris.

2013 sees Colchester Zoo celebrating its 50th birthday! Originally known as Stanway Hall Park Zoo, the zoo was opened on the 2nd June 1963 by Frank and Helena Farrar.

colchester zoofifty years young

The zoo was very successful during the 1960’s, with many thousands of visitors flocking to see its iconic animals. Some of these animals even achieved celebrity status, appearing in films, commercials and making public appearances at film premieres. However, during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, the zoo fell into disrepair and visitor numbers dropped rapidly.

Angela and Dominique Tropeano took over the zoo in March 1983, and began the process of bringing the zoo back up to the standard required to gain its license in order to remain open. A purchase of an additional 20 acres of land enabled major changes to be made to the animal enclosures to improve the animals’ welfare, which in turn encouraged visitors back to the zoo. Over the years, Colchester Zoo has become well known for its modern, ground breaking enclosures. It depends on its income from admissions and other revenues to develop and fund its conservation work. Colchester Zoo is part of a wider network working to conserve species. The zoo is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). These programmes involve the monitoring and management of species between different zoos, helping to maintain genetic diversity. Colchester Zoo also supports conservation in the wild, actively supporting a number of different conservation projects around the world, which are all working to protect endangered species. These projects are supported through the zoo’s charitable arm Action for the Wild, which was set up in 1993 and achieved charitable status in 2004. In 2005, Colchester Zoo also began to develop the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve in South Africa where zebra, rhino, giraffe and countless other animals have been released. This zoo continues to grow and develop to meet the demands of the 21st century, with plans to build a brand new tropical walkthrough exhibit which will be spread over two floors. It will incorporate an underwater viewing tunnel where you will be able to see crocodiles swim and feed above your head, before coming out to see them basking around their outdoor pool through three metre glass windows.

We are very honoured that historian Dr Sam Kershaw, one of our longest serving volunteers, has written a book about Colchester Zoo’s history to commemorate our 50th birthday. ‘The Story of Colchester Zoo’ is due for publication by The History Press on the 15th of May 2013, and will subsequently be available for purchase from our Ark Shop.

Unlike almost every other major zoo in the country, Colchester Zoo has never had its story told. Dr Kershaw brings the forgotten figures of Frank and Helena Farrar back to life once again in these pages which show how they founded firstly Southport Zoo in the 1950s and then Colchester Zoo in the 1960s. Told here is the story of how Frank and Helena’s domestic life with their lions and monkeys prompted them to embark on a series of adventures which took them all over the world. Also told is the story of how Colchester Zoo fell apart in the 1980s and how the Tropeano family turned it into an internationally respected breeding centre for endangered animals. This is a tale of struggle and heart-break, but also of transformation and redemption and is a fitting tribute to Colchester Zoo at its fiftieth anniversary.

Dr Kershaw will be at Colchester Zoo signing copies of his book, every afternoon during our 50th birthday week, from the 25th May – 2nd June.

Michaela says...I remember when they painted elephants to raise money and awareness for wildlife. They looked amazing leading the way to Covent Garden in London. I’m sure the giraffes will look equally fabulous in Colchester.

Wildlife and works of art are always a great combo although painting them must be a tall order for the artists!! Happy painting and happy birthday to Colchester Zoo.”

Our new enclosure for our two resident sun bears, Jo-Jo and Srey Ya, is well underway.

Their new enclosure consists of a large outdoor area, which is situated on the top of the hill, with an indoor facility which will include a waterfall and climbing frames. Both of these areas allow visitors to view them enjoying their new surroundings, but they also have their own private off show sleeping quarters to retire to.

Development of this modern enclosure will continue, and both of our sun bears will be introduced to their new home later this year!

Visitors will be able to overlook the bears exploring their new large outdoor enclosure from the top of the hill!

Visitors can also view the rufous hornbills in their new aviary located adjacent to Guest Services.

Sadly the rhino poaching crisis is continuing, with at least 745 rhinos killed in South Africa alone, in 2012.

2013 has already seen over 146 rhinos killed for their horn, and at this rate, it is estimated that 1 rhino is killed every 10.5 hours.

The increase in rhino poaching is mainly attributed to the growing demand for rhino horn from wealthy consumers in Asia; in particular Vietnam and China. Rhino horn is used in Traditional Chinese Medicines and is believed to cure many illnesses, including cancer.

Colchester Zoo’s charity, Action for the Wild, supports a rhino project in South Africa. The project is based at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and is one of the most important strongholds for both white and black rhinos. Funds donated have helped the project continue with its law enforcement and patrolling activities.

Colchester Zoo has always cared passionately about the world’s threatened species, and so created its charity Action for the Wild in 2004.

It provides both financial and technical assistance to projects around the world, aiming to raise awareness by community conservation programmes and by supporting conservation research. Action for the Wild has donated around £700,000 over the past 7 years to projects worldwide.

2012 was again another great year for Action for the Wild, donating over £50,000 to 18 different projects across the globe, many of which we are continuing to support, such as the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Cambodia.

This year Action for the Wild will be supporting 20 projects, and has pledged to donate in total £200,000 this year alone.

2013 sees 4 new projects added: West Visayas Biodiversity Conservation Programme; François’ Langur Conservation; Proyecto Mono Tocón; and the Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL)/Lwiro Primate Sanctuary.

UMPHAFAPrivate Nature Reserve

This season has been especially exciting and busy for all at UmPhafa. We have had some great groups of volunteers to lighten the load and help us cope with the ongoing projects. During the winter, we were joined by a group of research students studying UmPhafa’s giraffe. They noticed a nervous adult-female standing away from the group. It didn’t take them long to discover she was hiding a new calf in an acacia thicket. After a few weeks, the youngster was out and about with the herd. We were very fortunate to also receive another two calves in quick succession several months later, all strong and healthy individuals. The arrival of the first hartebeest calves marked the beginning of the calving season with the impala and blesbok arriving soon after. The shyer wildebeest even made a brief visit to the house one morning to afford us the brief glimpse of their ten new calves – great success for a population of only thirty. Yet again the zebra seem to be producing very well and there seems to be an abundance of foals. Unfortunately the summer can be harsh on animals. Extreme heat, huge storms and rising parasite numbers can all take their toll and sadly a number of animals were lost; most notably an adult giraffe female which succumbed to a tick-borne disease. But this is a natural process and the death of such a large herbivore provides necessary sustenance for an entire litter of jackal pups. There were also several mortalities under more suspicious circumstances; all showing the distinct signs of a large cat which added to the increasing signs of leopard on the reserve. This persistent rise in activity by an apex predator is a clear sign of an ecosystem in good health and we expect a higher frequency of occurrences in the future. Work continues on the ongoing research of UmPhafa’s species with a specific project looking at the reptiles and amphibians. This will present some extremely useful information as some species are highly sensitive to the slightest changes and can be used to indicate a negative shift in conditions before the issue becomes irreversible. We have hopes to eventually publish some of this work in scientific journals. The anti-poaching unit have been taking their role very seriously in the face of the upsurge in rhino poaching incidents in Africa. A number of new game guards have been employed and have been working around the clock to maintain the security and welfare of UmPhafa’s species. The volunteers’ help in constructing a new watch-post was gratefully received and this will help the team ensure that a high-risk area remains protected from intruders. The game guards work in harsh conditions under immense pressure and their commitment and dedication is valued enormously. As the months go by at a seemingly rapid rate, each brings a new promise of further developments on UmPhafa. Already the impala rams are gearing up for the next rutting season, and before long we’ll be going through the whole cycle again.

Staff are continuing to find very fresh leopard tracks on the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve. In December, whilst conducting game counts, the volunteers spotted the tracks on our release farm, Gevonden, so have been out making plaster casts of the footprints found. There has been lots of leopard activity on our other two farms (Geluk and Vetrek) recently too, but we think the tracks and signs may come from different leopards. We are going to set up a camera trap to take a photograph of the leopard activity on Gevonden and compare it to the Geluk/Vetrek photos we already have.

At the end of 2012, UmPhafa staff spotted blue crane chicks on top of our iThala mountain, which is the first time we’ve ever known them to nest here!

In 2012, we had 25 volunteers head out to UmPhafa to assist in the reserve’s research and conservation projects, and by the end of February, we have had 18 bookings for 2013 already. We are continuing to take bookings for 2013 so please do consider taking up a place. The placements are particularly suited to those seeking to gain experience before pursuing a career in conservation, although the programme is open to anybody with a genuine love of nature and the environment. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact:

Rebecca Perry, Director of Conservation, Education and Research at Colchester Zoo [email protected]

On the 12th of March 2013, UmPhafa staff were extremely excited to discover a new rhino calf on the reserve; the third to be born on UmPhafa to date. Field staff had all been keeping a close eye as it was becoming increasingly obvious that the patter of little feet was imminent. Everybody was kept on their toes as the mother’s behaviour changed drastically over the weeks preceding the birth, driving her deeper into the bush where she was harder to track and view. Fortunately a chance viewing allowed the opportunity to confirm the new arrival during routine animal monitoring.
