COLCA VALLEYThe Colca Valley is located in the south of Peru in the province of Caylloma, Arequipa It is famous because of its depth and because of its landscape beauty.

The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean Valley with towns founded in Spanish Colonial times and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. The local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre Inca stepped terraces.

• The Colca valley forms part of the South American tectonic plate and contains the active volcano Sabancaya, located on the volcanic mountain Hualca Hualca.

There are sixteen villages in this zone made up of descendants of the Collaguas and Cabanas tribes, inheritors of rich cultural traditions. The towns of Chivay and Cabanaconde are the most visited by tourists.

The people living in the Colca Canyon Region are known for their traditional clothing, worn especially by the women. Their dresses and jackets are beautifully embroidered and their hats are distinctive.

This is one of the deepest places on the planet, reaching a depth of 3400 meters / 11.155 feet at the lowest point in the location of Canco.   On the right side, it is flanked by the Chila Cordillera (Bomboya, Serpregrina, Mismi, Queshihua) and on the other by Mount Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya, and Ampato.

• This valley possesses a great diversity of flora and fauna. Among the most representative species are the condor, the kestrel, the peregrine falcon, and the Andean tinamou.

You can watch condors soar gracefully from the Cruz de Condor (Condor Crossing) Lookout early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they are hunting.

• The vicuña is one of the wild South America camelids that produces soft, warm and fine wool. The Incas raised vicuñas for their wool. It was against the law for any person but only royal family could wear vicuña garments.
