    4B Retrospective

A retropective of the graduating classof 2010s work. Held in Cambridge Ci tyHal l . In the spir i t of the event: thisexhibi t was thought of as a celebrationof 5 years spent studying, l iv ing andlearning together. We designed thearmatures to hold a single panel fromevery student which they created toembody their f ive years. Guests, parents, and fel low students catchgl impses of people around and throughthe panels at al l t imes. In this way,the work of 5 years represented on thepanels becomes synonymous wi th thepeople who produced that work: theysurround the works during the event:framing i t , engaging i t .

The armature cost $219 to produce.

Curated, Designed and Produced by:Andrew Azzopardi , Katie Kuzan, andGeoff Christou.

    Dining Pavilion

This group project is for the designand bui ld of a dining pavi l ion in thelandscape. 1x4 and 1x2 t imber pieceswere predri l led and threaded through

metal poles to create a platform thatmorphs into shelves and backrests. Theassemblage and connections enablethe platform to mold into the landscapeal lowing the occupant to dine wi thin thesurrounding vegetation.

    Weather

A experiment in mi l l ing complexparametrical ly designed surfaces into woodplanks. The unusual method of mi l l ingposed chal lenges, as machines, unlessprogrammed, are not sensi t ive to thenuances of the woods material propert ies. Here, the material was sanded, waxed, andpol ished, producing a highly tacti le andinvi t ing piece of furni ture.

    Light Disc

The instal lat ion conveys the expanse, theintroduction of st imul i , in the attempt to, int ime, activate and draw in the visi tor. Oncearound the disk, the l ight would begin to showitsel f- which was very sensi t ive to angle and

posi t ion. Questions arised:What am I lookingat? What does this do? Am I al lowed towander? An ai r of mystery is created when suchquestions are asked by the visi tor to any placewhich can produce various atmospheres, somecan be l ight and others heavy. We focusedon heavy. Heaviness in regards to void, tounknown si tuations which mani fest themselveswithin ourselves. What happens when thesequestions are not answered This process for uswas very unsett l ing, unforgiving.

    Winter Break Dancercambridge, ontario

The project investigates the useof salvaged industr ial componentsin generating complex spatial andstructural arrangements. In this case, the standard components, 70 plywoodcable spools of 30 and 36 diameters

were found by the roadside. Anexploration of these plywood spool at1:1 dictated the method of assemblyand f inal form of the dancer.

The form is derived from 16 patternsgenerated via model ing. These patternswere then translated wi th a penci l , ruler, math, scissors and tape at 1:1 to thespools. The 70 pieces where fabricatedvia an assembly l ine of simple tasks(measuring, cutt ing, notching, sanding, testing) wi th each col laborator

preforming one task. The up-cycledspools are slotted together together...and so the behemoth r iseth (and issupported at 3 points for stabi l i ty), 20+ftabove the square.

Co.Labs is a systems design workshop based in Toronto and New York Ci ty: wedesign the morphology as wel l as methodology of our projects. Our goal is to insertprojects wi thin extant systems so as to engage and faci l i tate rather then subvert,co-opt, or compel . Our work takes the form of mass-data-col lection, research, experiments, bui lding, design, conversation, and fabrication.
