present report deals with the coins found during that season and serves as a supplement to Williams' account.2 As in past reports, the appended catalogue records all the legible spec- imens, which amounted to a total of 587 coins. Some bulk counts are given, at the end of sections, of coins which were too badly preserved for detailed entry, yet were evidence of a certain period. A stratigraphic list is also included. Before cleaning, about 1,210 coinlike items were entered in a field count of finds from the Forum Southwest for the 1977 season. Of that number around 420 appeared to be Roman, with more than 225 each Greek and Byzantine. Twelve coins were clean enough right from the soil to be identified as Ostro- gothic, as were 4 Frankish deniers, 1 Seljuq bronze, and 1 Greek five-lepta coin of 1848. The rest are still uncertain.

Unusual coin accumulations appeared in two areas: one in the overlapping Greek and Roman roads that lie just west of the South Stoa and another in the Byzantine metal-working complex that bordered this same thoroughfare in later times.3 Glimpses of bronze in the hard-packed levels of the Greek road promised a rich harvest of coins of late Classical and Hellenistic times; unfortunately, nearly all of them were encased in crushed poros and were severely compressed by long, heavy use of the road. Weeks in the laboratory were spent freeing coins from countless, iron-hard clumps of coarse gravel. Many coins dissolved or fragmented in the process; others stayed fused together in hopeless lumps. Coins in the Roman roadway fared a little better, as many had fallen into cracks between the handsome paving slabs and thus were somewhat protected. Seven deposits accumulated in pits in the road itself. At the Byzantine metal-working area many scoriae, tacks, buttons, and other round objects were found along with coins. Consequently, there were fewer numismatic additions to the collection than had been hoped, but the final count, by and large, kept the proportions shown in the field tally, with Roman coins a solid majority, Greek and Byzan- tine next, and a few later coins to complete the picture.4

Generally speaking, the finds were all of known types. Minor variations occurred but nothing significant such as new issues, magistrates, or symbols. In the largest section (Ro- man), the majority of the coins were from the mid-4th to the early 5th centuries. Con- stantius II (A.D. 337-361), Arcadius (A.D. 383-408), and Theodosius I (A.D. 379-395) were, in that order, the emperors most frequently represented. Many more of these coins, however, were road damaged so that counts based on a certain emperor are a matter of chance

preservation, rather than an accurate picture of mint activity or trade. The same applies to the next strongest Roman group, the 5th-to-6th-century minimi. Happily, a concentration of Ostrogothic bronzes (Baduila, A.D. 541-552) survived amongst a myriad of tiny illegibles. Next largest, the Greek section was similar to those of recent years: the finds were mostly autonomous issues from the Peloponnese. Once again, Corinth and Sikyon were the mints most commonly found. Corinthian Pegasos/Tridents were abundant, her Duoviri less so. Greek Imperials were scarce. No Greek coins were identified as coming from the West; a mere six represented the East. The Byzantine section was strongest in 1 th-to- 2th-century coins, especially the later Anonymous Issues and, as usual, the strikings of Manuel I (A.D. 1143-1180). Finally, modern surface levels and a disturbed road fill produced the Frankish and Seljuq pieces.

Five Greek silvers shown on Plate 48 are well-known fractions: a diobol (No. 1) and a drachm (No. 2) from Corinth, two hemidrachms (Nos. 103, 119) from the Aitolian and Achaian Leagues respectively, a tetrobol (No. 108) from Histiaia. Only the tetrobol is in relatively good condition although all appear for e record. The Achaian League hemidrachm, similar to no. 555 of the Agrinion Hoard, can be identified as a late striking (160- 150 B.C.) from Patras while the Aitolian League hemidrachm, duplicate of Agrinion 617, is dated ca. 196-146 B.C.5 On the other hand, the poor condition of both the drachm and the diobol from Corinth (4th century B.C.) precludes identification of the die. A more unusual find (No. 114) from under the 5th-century B.C. floor of the Punic Amphora Building is the Turtle/Incuse stater from Aigina. Despite crystallization of all surfaces and disappearance of some details, such as dots on the shell of the turtle, the obverse still shows a wide-necked turtle with a "thick" collar and the reverse, a defective five-segmented incuse. This design probably belongs to a design transition between the earlier "Union Jack" reverses and the later "Windmill" or four-segmented incuses. The worn, defective reverse die with the five segments, together with the "heavy"-collar obverse design argues, in terms of the Asyut Hoard, for placing our specimen late in Group III, dated ca. 500/490-480 B.C. in a fine study of internal and hoard evidence by Drs. Martin J. Price and Nancy M. Waggoner.6

Turning to Greek bronzes, two late Corinthian pieces deserve mention. The first (No. 85), an Octavius-Licinus Duovir struck under Claudius (A.D. 41-54) was known to Fox7 but without the ethnic COR on the reverse; also, on our obverse the Claudius head faces right. The second (No. 92), struck under Caracalla (A.D. 198-212), bears the bust of Plautil- la on the obverse and the figure of Caracalla on horseback, saluting, on the reverse. This Plautilla issue appears to be relatively rare. Although described by Mionnet and then by Cohen, it seems not to be in subsequent catalogues despite the fact that the equestrian Em- peror saluting was a reverse type used on Corinthian Imperials for Lucius Verus (A.D. 162- 169), Commodus (A.D. 176-192), and Septimius Severus (A.D. 193-211). This peaceful

"equestrian" Imperial seems unknown so far for Caracalla himself, but he does use a more aggressive type: Emperor on horseback, galloping and spearing warrior.8

Three more bronzes of note come from other Greek mints. No. 102 was struck (48 B.C.-A.D. 138) in Korkyra, a slight variant of the rather common Apollo/Zeus Kasios series described under BMC, nos. 507-584. Instead of the full ethnic KOPKVPA or KOP- KYPAIO)N around the Apollo bust, or a monogram, our obverse bears a large K to the right, above the lyre. On our reverse, the enthroned Zeus with scepter faces right, in profile, quite unlike the more prevalent left-seated version with frontal torso and head to left. The closest parallel comes from a specimen in the American Numismatic Society collections.9 Very similar to ours, it has the large K but no lyre on the obverse. Zeus Kasios was honored during Hellenistic and Imperial times with a temple at Kassiopi in northeastern Korkyra and was probably derived from an earlier mountain- or weather-god associated with Mt. Pantokrator, which rises behind the town.10

No. 156 is a rare find from the important town of Nicomedia in Bithynia. Struck in the reign of Nero under the Proconsul L. Montanus, the obverse displays the bare head of young Nero and the reverse, three ears of wheat along with the abbreviated ethnic NEIKO and the Proconsular name. Despite surface deterioration, both types are seen to be rather summary in style. The three ears of wheat are a new version of the two-ear motif recorded in Reinach.11 Demeter was the principal deity of Nicomedia so that references to the god- dess, her temple, or her attributes often appear on the late coins. This particular issue is not in the usual catalogues nor in the American Numismatic Society collections.

Our third non-Corinthian bronze (No. 157) was minted in Abydos, the strategically important town on the Hellespont, where Alexander III crossed the Sestos-Abydos straits into Asia Minor in 334 B.C. Here, Apollo and Artemis were the main divinities. Our small Apollo/Eagle specimen is from an extensive autonomous series dating from the 4th century B.C. and later. Issued in at least five different sizes or denominations, this bronze can probably be associated with late silver issues of the same types, accompanied by names of magistrates. In fact, a rare trihemiobol carries the same amphora symbol to right of the eagle as on our bronze.12 The American Numismatic Society has a strong collection of Apollo/Eagle bronzes, which includes one example (E. T. Newell collection) of the smallest

denomination with the amphora symbol. None of their medium-small coins, like our No. 157, has this symbol.

No. 347, a Roman bronze, is a barbarous imitation of the SALVS REIPVBLICAE coins of Honorius from Constantinople. On the obverse, the bust of the Emperor (PI. 48) displays curiously negroid features, most likely a fortuitous result of the die-cutting tech- nique. This, and what remains of the blundered legend, DI/4 HO- U- - - - VG, belie a regular imperial striking. The reverse tends to confirm the barbaric origin, with a truncated Victory dragging a rudimentary captive left, together with a crude 0 or blundered -P in the left field. As with similar imitations, no attributions can yet be made to a particular reign or mint, despite in this case the rather good fabric and what may be traces of [C]ON in the exergue.13

Two Byzantine pieces are of interest, Nos. 416 and 537. The first is a fine example of the Christogram follis issued under Justinian, in A.D. 527-538. Minted in Constantinople with the officina C, the piece is not in the Dumbarton Oaks collections. It is, however, represented in the Byzantine section of the Cabinet des Medailles at Paris and illustrated on plate XI of C. Morrisson's handsome catalogue.14 The second coin (No. 537) belongs to the light standard, half-tetartera of Manuel I (A.D. 1143-1180), struck at an uncertain Greek mint. No. 537 differs from this abundant half-tetarteron group, as do Nos. 529 and 530, by cruder style, a more lozenge-shaped clip, and a very thin flan. As can be seen by comparing this coin to No. 537a, a specimen found in 1963 in the same general Southwest Forum area, neither the clip nor the style is uniform. Often struck on nearly paper-thin flans, these coins can be eptagonal or octagonal in shape and smaller than the already irregular range of light standard, monogram half-tetartera from the uncertain Greek mint. The styles of the small pieces seem even sketchier: uneven crosses punctuated with ill-formed letters pass for a monogram, while the Emperor often is reduced to a few sloppy lines and dots. The coins appear to have been hurriedly struck, as do the more abundant, light standard half-tetartera, a result, perhaps, of efforts on the part of the Greek mint to alleviate a pressing shortage of small change, as suggested by Hendy, something which occurred early in the reign of Manuel I.15 They may, however, have been clipped sometime later to reduce the value ot the light half-tetarteron, if they started out as that denomination, or to conserve metal scarce at the time. Indeed, possibly the small coins were intended as fractions and produced as such, without much care, for local use. Further study of this interesting late Byzantine period will, one day, clarify small anomalies such as this.

Baduila died shortly therafter, in 552, when confronting Narses in the Apennines. The small A coins in the same deposits have been reassigned to Justinian I rather than to the "Vandal" period.
