The site is also of great importance to world prehistory. In 1925 the Cohuna Cranium was discovered by a local earthmoving contractor. Kow Swamp foreshore needs our help!

Support the restoration!

Locals and visitors know Kow Swamp as a popular spot for fishing, swimming, kayaking, bird spotting, picnicking, photographing, community gatherings and watching sunsets.

Kow Swamp is a freshwater lake and wetland fifteen kilometres in circumference, with an average depth of three metres. It was formerly a swamp and is now used for water storage.

The site is also of great importance to world prehistory. In 1925 the Cohuna Cranium was discovered by a local earthmoving contractor. By 1972 the remains of at least forty people had been excavated, making it the largest single population burial site in one locality of the late Pleistocene (from about 2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago) in the world.

For more historical information see

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kow_Swamp_Archaeological_Site

The name “Kow” comes from the Yorta Yorta word Ghow which refers to the white gypsum soil found at the swamp.

Since the Shire of Campaspe relinquished its position as overseer of the site, the Leitchville Lions Club has taken on the role of overseer. Their priority is to secure the stability of the Kow Swamp foreshore and community picnic grounds for future generations. To this end, the Club has formed a committee of management and they will be applying for funding, but they will need our help.
