Using Data to Evaluate Improvement Plan Tasks

Page 10: Cohort 2 Focus School Technical Assistance Webinar Session 4 January 7, 2014 Yvonne A. Holloman, Ph.D. Associate Director Office of School Improvement.

Begin here

School- and division-level leadership teams will evaluate the efficacy of the tasks included in their respective improvement plans on a quarterly basis.

Page 11: Cohort 2 Focus School Technical Assistance Webinar Session 4 January 7, 2014 Yvonne A. Holloman, Ph.D. Associate Director Office of School Improvement.

School- and division-level teams will enter comments regarding the quarterly status of tasks associated with each indicator. These comments will be identified using the heading “Quarterly Data Review.”

Page 12: Cohort 2 Focus School Technical Assistance Webinar Session 4 January 7, 2014 Yvonne A. Holloman, Ph.D. Associate Director Office of School Improvement.

Throughout the duration of the

improvement plan, school-level teams will enter formative data associated with

specific tasks into the Indistar® tool.

Page 13: Cohort 2 Focus School Technical Assistance Webinar Session 4 January 7, 2014 Yvonne A. Holloman, Ph.D. Associate Director Office of School Improvement.

Information regarding the specific data may be entered by the school leadership team into the Assessment component of the Indistar® Web-based planning tool.

Page 14: Cohort 2 Focus School Technical Assistance Webinar Session 4 January 7, 2014 Yvonne A. Holloman, Ph.D. Associate Director Office of School Improvement.

Additional data (i.e. qualitative measures) may be uploaded into the Document Upload component of the Indistar® Web-based planning tool.

Focus Questions1) Based on the data, what school-level tasks were

successful? Division-level tasks?2) Based on the data, what are the major areas of

concern for students who received Tier 2 interventions in reading? In mathematics?

3) Based on the data, what are the major areas of concern for students who received Tier 3 interventions in reading? In mathematics?

4) Based on the data, what are the major areas of concern for students representing the identified proficiency gap groups?

5) What additional support is needed from the division to support intervention efforts for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students?

6) What tasks need to be added, revised, or discontinued in the school-level plan? Division-level plan?

The division leadership team will meet with focus school leadership teams to review data related to tasks included in the division- and school-level improvement plans as well as the data included in the VDOE-approved data query system. These data will be used to revise the plans as appropriate. Decisions made as a result of these discussions must be entered into the meeting minutes for the division leadership team.

Educators have made great strides in using data. But danger lies ahead for those who misunderstand what data can and can’t do.

1. Where are the state educational agency’s focus schools in their preparations to implement interventions in the first semester?

2. What processes, such as needs analyses, are local educational agencies and schools using to determine what interventions will be implemented?

3. How is the state educational agency ensuring that its local educational agencies implement interventions aligned with the reason for the school’s identification as a focus school?

4. What resources and supports are the state educational agency providing to those local educational agencies as they develop their plans for interventions?

5. What process does the state educational agency have in place to ensure that all focus schools will begin implementing interventions in the first semester? For example, do local educational agencies have a plan or report that they must submit?

6. How is the state educational agency planning to hold local educational agencies accountable for improving school and student performance?

7. How and when does the state educational agency plan to monitor local educational agency implementation of interventions in priority and focus schools?
