Being a President is not an easy job. Its a challenging task to coordinate with people of various skill-sets and attitude. Moreover you have to be biased in your decisions considering opinions from all the members and keeping in mind the instructions set by the district. But truly saying it's been a great journey leading the club collectively learning many new things accepting challenges at every step of life. The journey was smooth just because there was timely support from the entire Rotaract family and this is what makes the journey even more wonderful . It was a great start with an successful installation ceremony and projects such as peace march, club assembly, Ganesh idol making workshop number of fellowship and Zonal fellowship for Zone 1 of R.I.D. 3132. Moreover many projects in action and will be executed soon. As we all

know, that knowledge is the key to achieve any goal any one can think of. We, Rotaract Club of Achiever's, together strive to unlock the hidden potential among us, and are constantly working in achieving this goal of ours, to make people aware, and to spread the light of awareness. Looking forward for a great time with you all!

Its very difficult for me to elaborate Rotaract but I honestly feel that its a best platform to enhance your professional and soft skills. For me last year was very full of excitement and totally different from regular lifestyle. My team had decided the club theme as " change starts here“ just because we found change in ourselves when we joined Rotaract. It gave me opportunity to be an exclusive leader and taught to tackle with people of different mindsets and on the same time learn from them lots of new things. It was a great experience for me as a president. With the support of my team we proudly hosted project named “Shikhar" that was appreciated by rotaract clubs all over the country. At last I want to thank Rotaract club of Achievers for giving me such a great opportunity.

We Indians have solution to every problem that’s what we love to think. We even discuss most of them during our sessions with friend and family on the nukkad wali chai tapri, the kattas and many other places. But do we really have solutions for real? I leave the answer to your opinion. But one thing is for sure. We Indians have many problems and we need many solutions in our day to day routine. If you don’t agree to that then I request you to please refer to the nearest newspaper that you can get.

Now once we agree to the statement that we Indians have many problems so let’s talk about solutions. We all have solutions but how many

of us have solutions to ‘our own problems’? When it comes to the problems that other face, be it your friends, family, society or the country or even the world at large suddenly we all become expert on the issue/topic (which might

include economics, politics and even some times aerospace engineering) but when it comes to our own problems then we are stuck most of the times. Don’t worry this is absolutely normal. The solution to every problem gets generated from an Idea (and Ideas are free so feel free to share them) which when converted into a tangible and feasible plan, a line of action it becomes a solution. But the greatest issue is the Idea generation part. This article tries to demonstrate that you are capable of solving every problem but you yourself are the one stopping yourself and gives a suggestion on how to approach your problems.

Idea Generation

Have you heard of the Candle Problem? People studying psychology would know it very well. Even you can ask Google about it now. This is

what is wrong with us when we try to solve our own problems. The Candle Problem tries to measure the influence of functional fixedness and just states two things – The Needle Pin Point Focus and a Wide Angle Focus on the problem.

The Needle Pin Point Focus means that few of us tend to focus on the Problem just as the Needle Pin Point i.e. they are able to just look at the tip (point) of the needle and are blind of the complete needle. Whereas Wide Angle Focus means that few of us tend to focus on the Problem too widely as we can see the complete needle, the table on which it is kept, the surroundings of the needle, everything which relates or is irrelevance to the needle (Here Needle stands for the problem). These both types of focus are very important to solve different problems but using only one will end you up in a dead lock. That’s what happening to us. Few of us might not agree to this so let’s take an example – One of your friends promised you an assignment for you to copy it from today but he

did not get you the assignment. There are two types of reactions that we might have on this incidence. First and the most common is

Rage/Anger (Aggressive Emotions) and the other is Sadness/Failure (Pessimistic Emotions). Both the feeling did not solve the problem i.e. the completion of the assignment. If your focus is the Needle Pin Point Focus you will not be able

to find the solution to the problem as you only see that your friend cheated on you and broke his promise. On the other hand when you have a wide focus you will inquire about the reasons and might find a solution. Maybe your friend has given the assignment to some other classmate who did not return the assignment or he is too conservative about the assignment and is reluctant to give the original copy to you or there may be many other dimensions to this problem. But when you see the problem completely you will try to find a solution. Here I need not to give you solution of photo copying the assignment or going to the holder of the assignment or anything (That you already did… I’m very sure about that). So in the above example the Wide Focus approach will help you to get an idea on what might be the solution to

P 06

cognἰzancԑ

Page 10: Cognizance Vol 1 Edition 1

the problem. Similarly there are many examples that may prove to be beneficial for the Needle Pin Point Approach. So the point I am trying to make here is, ‘the way we look at the problem will give us different Ideas and those ideas are generated automatically you just need to have the right focus’. Theoretically it’s that easy but not as easy as it seems when we apply. So apply these following steps which may help (the steps are just a suggestion and you may have your own way to approach the problem) – •Define the problem (In the above example Assignment completion was a problem and not your friend) •Identify the Road Block to the solution which might be predefined or may be as same as the problem itself (your friend not fulfilling his/her commitment) •Apply the Needle Pin Point Approach to the problem and try to find a solution or an Idea (at this step you need to take a pen and paper, note

down everything. Here you have the liberty to think anything and everything as a solution however stupid it may sound) •Write down everything that you have thought as a solution •Now Apply the Wide Focus Approach and do the same procedure as in step 3 and 4 •Evaluate the Ideas to Solutions that you have came up with for every practical aspect i.e. Evaluate the feasibility of your Ideas (Here you can combine one or more Ideas together which may result in a better solution compared to a single Idea when implemented) •Write the final Idea and work on it further

The god we pray has created nature and thus we must take precautions to conserve nature in every way possible. Now for instance a small commitment from our side ensuring use of eco friendly Ganesh idols during Ganesh Festival can help in reducing water pollution to a great extent. Thus I advice to buy eco friendly Ganesh

idol and avoid those made of POP i.e. plaster of Paris. Buying a eco friendly idol provides solution to three major problems Water pollution Low soil fertility

Traffic problems faced during this festival The biggest advantage of buying Eco-friendly idol is that one can do emersion (visarjan) within the society compound or on terrace or in balcony at your place. All you require is a

bucket or a container of water depending upon the size of the idol. Once the eco-friendly idol is immersed in bucket of water the sand loosens and settles on the bottom and other natural

elements used floats. There is no other waste or toxic deposits. On the other hand POP idols can only be immersed in large water bodies

such as pond, lake, river or sea and this spoils the natural flora and fauna there. Thus avoiding use of POP idols helps reduce water pollution and conserves natural flora and fauna. The soil deposited in the bucket of water in which eco

friendly idol is immersed is fertile and the other natural water floating in water adds fertility to a next level. Moreover the deposited soil can be reused to make idol again for next year so it is

Eco friendly Ganpati

P 09

cognἰzancԑ

Page 13: Cognizance Vol 1 Edition 1

not only eco friendly but also economical. Now if idols are immersed in bucket or container of water at home or in society there is automatic fall in traffic congestions and long queues that are formed during the festival for emersion of Ganesh idol in water body. Though there still remains a challenge to find a solution for statues that are too big in size but till we find a solution to it we should at least start contributing from our side by avoiding POP statues of smaller size as for now. Let’s pledge today and take a step to contribute for a cleaner environment.

A couple of months after my final year internship (in 2013) working for a firm at Mumbai, I figured out that there's a difference between what I'm good at and what I like to do, because what I am good at is something that I can always learn. Then came the BIG question: “Should I? OR Should I not??”…Then I thought, Why not!!

I am indebted to Rotaractivity (especially RaC Achievers), which have given me a lot of

exposure to real life circumstances of facing challenges and overcoming them. I gained my initial lessons of leadership and professional skills from RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), a four day leadership workshop and soon after that I got associated with Rotaract. After this it was easy for me to pitch myself and my first clients were my family members (as

they were to sponsor me) wherein I had to express my ideas to them. Since my elder brother was already a successful businessman, I did not had to flatter or convince them much. And then came the idea of KOTTONHOOD.com

(Kottonhood Fashion Private Limited). When I started my business (at the fall of 2013) on recommendation of my family & friends , I was planned to venture into the e-commerce business only as a service provider for custom

designing & made to order services, because my educational background and my work experience revolved around web development mainly. However, I was lucky enough to also

work on many other things during my time as an employee, so I also learned marketing, sales, business development and also gained knowledge of T-shirt manufacturing. Hence I started to do a research on the manufacturing processes and during this struggle I shifted to Tamil Nadu (a major textile and knit wear hub contributing to 90% of total cotton knit wear exports from India) for a couple of months to set up my office and my team there along with the Head Office that is located in Mumbai. The business model at my company turned into providing custom T-shirt printing services along

with manufacturing as per their requirements to social ventures, corporate and also regular retail customers which allowed me to leverage my background to be more creative and serve my clients better. It was also a sustainable model that allowed me to secure revenue. It has been almost two years now, & we (at Kottonhood Fashion Private Limited) are now counted amongst one of the largest & well acclaimed manufacturers, exporters & suppliers for not just T-shirts but also Sweat shirts, pants, Hoodies, Promotional Caps, Polo Shirts , Shorts etc. The material provided by the firm is of

Page 16: Cognizance Vol 1 Edition 1

finest quality, softness, sweat absorbing capacity, excellent finishing and skin friendliness. We also provide T-shirt printing - screen printing

and digital/rubber/vinyl-cut printing and embroidery services. Each new day we try to add up something new to our list. We are presently planning for more new startups ahead & at cultivating entreployees:

employees that think and act like entrepreneurs. To end with I would like to say, if you are doing what you love, you will always find a way to find a niche or establish one, and you will never get

bored of it. Cheers!!

dad encouraged me in drawing and colouring

like all the parents did. But as we grow, this just

keeps on fading till you get stuck in a daily

routine of the competitive world.

But if you just look around, you can find beauty

all around you. Recently I’ve read one of the

world’s bestselling novels Angels and Demons

by Dan Brown in which all the magnificent

monuments and statues in the Vatican City have

been explained beautifully in form of words.

That’s too far, even if we come closer to the

home, the Ajanta and Ellora caves have attracted

patrons from all over the world for its beautiful

paintings. This shows how much creativity was

valued in our world in ancient times.

Today, this is rapidly depleting. People want

money; they stick to Televisions, Cell Phones

and view these just through photographs or

videos. Moreover, they have stopped giving

value for creativity as it should be. Nowadays,

there are lesser paintings on the walls and more

of wallpapers and modern gadgets. The gaps on

walls are filled with photographs rather than any

small painting created by their own kids. In fact,

the curriculum has changed so rapidly in schools

in the past decade that even they are prioritizing

Sciences and Math over Arts. Some have even

eliminated it as a part for senior students. Even

colleges have started closing the degree of Arts.

Kids looking at their parents get attracted to

mobile phones. I still remember when I was

three, my dad had bought me colouring books,

Declining value of creativity in Modern World

This short quote says

that even the simplest

of objects can be

perceived in a different

way by different

individuals. I’ve always

been a patron of beauty

and creativity. Ever

since I was a kid my

cognἰzancԑ

and colour sets and as the books used to get over

rapidly, he used to draw toons especially for me

so that I can enjoy and explore my creativity

This is not what happens today at all. Apart from

engineering, I’ve also learnt designing softwares

and when I impart the creativity in posters, I’m

told that we wanted a simple poster. There’s no

need of creativity there. Just a simple

background with text would suffice. And this is

just a simple person’s experience. There are

other professionals too who suffer from a similar

fate.

There is a new kind of art developed known as

Modern art which consists of simple boxes and

colours which even though pleases the watcher

might struck to some as a child’s artwork. The

complexity is decreasing in their work. The

people with skilled hand are stuck working to

make printed clothes, art on marble, glasses that

too at minimum wages. Where has their value

evaporated? Who in future would give

importance to their talent again?

These words cannot change the world in a

moment but if these change the hearts of a few,

It’ll be worth it. Art pieces are not just for

lockers and museums; you need to explore them

to get inspired. You need to show them to young

ones and encourage them in artistic fields.

Engineers need to adopt them in their works. If a

creation is aesthetically appealing, it will attract

more consumers is what we learn always. So get

inspired and appeal the world.

Whether listening or playing music or watching

a concert, music is important. Music generates

emotions. The physicists may just define music

as a series of Vibrations that under a set of

frequencies seem harmonious to the listener. But

a philosopher may define it as something else.

I met a patron of music who after listening to

songs sung by our very own band, Insane

commented that it is one of the ways that get you

close to God. If you sing or play an instrument

with your heart, irrespective of the genre, you

will go into a trance which will give you high

level of relief and satisfaction which is a feeling

that you will value above all.

Music can cheer us up, pump us up and help us

to have a good time, or simply help us think.

Life can become boring when devoid of music.

Whatever you listen to, do it daily. I personally

like to hear soothing music, which helps in

meditation. You can find music in the parks

among the birds, in the woods with the animals

and the rivers, or even in the cities with the

regular hustle if you have the ears and the love

for music.
