What is Cognitive Radio
CR can be defined as “…a radio that is aware of its surroundings and adapts intelligently”. This may require adaptation and intelligence at all the 7 layers of the “OSI” model.
working definition is:- “A CR uses intelligent signal processing (ISP) at the physical layer of a wireless system and is achieved by combining ISP with software defined radio (SDR)”.
Cognitive Radio• A radio that is aware of “meaning” behind radio
parameters
– Capable of determining the relative effect that each parameter will have
• modulation, bandwidth
• Cognitive radio provides a framework for a device to evaluate tradeoffs in the creation of dynamically-created links.
• Fundamental to these processes:– Ability to sense environment– Evaluate options– Implement chosen waveform

Cognitive Radios in Networks• Benefits
– Improved spectrum utilization
– Improve QoS• Many decisions may
have to be localized– Distributed behavior
• Adaptations of one radio can impact adaptations of others– Interactive decisions– Difficult to predict
performance
•Experiment with wideband RF tuning architectures (for wideband sensing, multichannel communications, etc.)•High performance reconfigurable computing architectures•High capacity switching networks•Open source development (linux, eCos )•Cellular communications
