FESTIVAL DIRECTORMESSAGE

DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMINGMESSAGE

For more than a decade KCFF has been supporting Canadian film and filmmakers by bringing great –Canadian – movies to Kingston cinema screens. We aim to showcase the strength and range of

films made in this country. From comedies to dramas, shorts and feature films, there is a tremendousamount of homegrown filmmaking talent here.

For us, supporting filmmakers isn’t simply about hosting a few screenings. We take a holistic approachby providing opportunities for local filmmakers to showcase their work through the Local ShortsProgram, hosting free workshops on a range of topics, presenting a film and media career event, andby providing our visiting filmmakers a venue for networking with their colleagues.

It’s still incredibly difficult to see a Canadian film at a mainstream movie theatre most weekends. It’s still incredibly important to keep trying to get them there.

The success of our festival is due to the hard work of so many. We couldn’t put this festival onwithout our dedicated volunteers, and each year a number of interns play vital roles in ourorganization. Our staff works tirelessly in the months preceding the festival, if not year round. Ourwonderful board of directors is supportive and generous with their trust and our sponsors andfunding agencies provide a foundation for our work.

Finally, you – the audience – show your support by putting your bums in our cinema seats. Thank you.

See you at the movies,

Alison Migneault, Festival Director

The world has developed a robust appetite for Canadian film. Consider the rave reviews and presti-gious awards that have already been earned by INCENDIES – an Oscar nominee making its

Kingston premiere at KCFF on March 4 – and BARNEY’S VERSION – whose editor Susan Shiptonpresents a master class here on March 6.

The acclaim from abroad is not surprising given that both are examples of an emerging breed of home-grown cinema: at once proudly Canadian and international in scope. That description applies to many ofour selections – be they features that situate familiar stars in unexpected settings, or else documentarieswhose stories led their filmmakers to locations far from home. (MakingWATER ON THE TABLE, LANDand BEYOND GAY must’ve done wonders for the frequent-flyer programs of their creators.)

This year, three compelling dramas – ROUTE 132, CURLING and MOURNING FOR ANNA – sendaudiences deep into rural Quebec. Meanwhile, THE MAN OF A THOUSAND SONGS and TRIGGERdelve into vibrant regional music scenes. Most striking of all may be the Yukon landscapes that have astarring role in THE MOUNTIE, a tale of six-gun justice in Canada’s north, making its world premiereat KCFF.

All of these films provide ample proof of Canadian filmmakers’ eagerness to engage with the worldaround them, whether the resulting journey takes them down the street or halfway around the globe. We moviegoers are lucky to be able to share their travels… especially if it means we don’t need toget shots before we go.

AGUIDETO

Only Harvey Keitel could playthe father of the battlingbrothers we meet in this

boisterous comedy, this year’sopening film. He plays Duke White, a lifelong rogue who enrolled histhree oldest sons in a drug trialwithout their knowledge. Now thebrothers have learned that theirrespective life spans have beendrastically reduced as a result.Jonathan Sobol set his debut featurein Niagara Falls – never before has amovie captured the ragged charm ofthe place’s not-so-natural attractions. No wonder the actors – includingJ.K. Simmons and Tricia Helfer – havesuch a good time. Audiences willfind that spirit infectious.

Pride Day celebrations provide cities in Canada andAmerica with some of their biggest and wildestparties every year. But as this documentary by

Vancouver’s Bob Christie demonstrates, the struggle todefend rights and freedoms for LGBT people can makePride celebrations a far more serious and evendangerous affair in other parts of the world. BEYONDGAY is a vital reminder that Pride’s not just aboutcorporate sponsors and parade floats but an ongoingworldwide campaign for human rights in the face ofbigotry and repression. No one can exactly say how the people in apicture-perfect community are being affected bythe industrial fire burning at the edge of town -

but they are behaving strangely. Kat Dennings stars asCaroline, whose decision to try life as a bad girl soonleads to an affair with her high-school English teacher.Caroline’s not the only one in town making dangerousmoves – thanks to the local serial killer, everyone is atrisk. And though the situation grows ever more seriousfor the people on screen, first-time feature maker MikeGoldbach’s movie never loses its often devilish sense ofhumour or its smarts.

Returning to the improvisational tactics thatspawned 2008’s MOTHERS&DAUGHTERS, Carl Bes-sai’s FATHERS&SONS is a richly varied and very en-

joyable look at the ties that bind sons and fathers. Thereare plenty of conflicts to be found in the film’s four dif-ferent storylines. Despite the many wild turns that thestories may take – viewers can expect both a drunkenknife fight and a Bollywood dance number, thoughthankfully not at the same time – the movie’s take onfamily dynamics always retains the ring of truth.

Some developers’ dreams of creating a “NicaraguanRiviera” inevitably run into more than a few hitchesin the land of the Sandinistas in this engrossing

documentary by Queen’s alum Julian T. Pinder. When notproviding evidence of the area’s stunning naturalbeauty, Pinder introduces viewers to a bounty of color-ful figures. Players in the drama range from big-talkingwould-be hoteliers to a hippie farmer to a one-eyed rev-olutionary poet. All prove to be subject to historicalforces far beyond their control as we witness the latestweird chapter in Nicaragua’s tumultuous relationshipwith interlopers and profiteers from El Norte.

Director: William D. MacGillivrayProducers: Terry Greenlaw, Jordan CanningPrincipal Cast: Ron HynesLanguage: English Runtime: 90 minutes

Canada has produced an extraordinary number ofgreat music documentaries but the latest by WilliamD. MacGillivray may be the most remarkable of the

lot. The veteran filmmaker pays tribute to Ron Hynes, anicon in Newfoundland’s music scene. This is not just aportrait of Hynes but of the “Man of 1,000 Songs,” his hard-living alter ego. Indeed, Hynes is startlingly frank about hisfamily sorrows and problems with drug addiction. Together with the film’s terrific performance sequences, it makes for an unforgettable look at the personal struggles and creative process of a Canadian music great.

Ingrid Veninger is a remarkably adept chronicler of thelives of youngsters, especially her own. Having alreadycast her son in ONLY in 2008, Veninger enlisted

daughter Hallie Switzer to play the lead in her first solodirectorial effort. She plays a Toronto teen who impul-sively asks a shy suitor she barely knows to accompanyher on a trip to visit family in the Slovakian town forwhich the movie is named. What makes MODRA thebest kind of home movie is how well it conveys its twoCanadian visitors’ moments of connection, conflict andold-fashioned adolescent confusion.

If Sergio Leone had ever thought to stage a spaghettiwestern in the Yukon, chances are it would’ve had thesame swagger as this tale of six-gun justice by S.

Wyeth Clarkson (SK8LIFE). Andrew W. Walker plays WadeGrayling, a Mountie as grizzled and laconic as anycowboy hero, who discovers that a remote camp ofRussian settlers is scheming to smuggle opium andgold. The cast includes a colourful array of familiarcharacter actors. Of course, the Yukon itself gets a bigstarring role in Clarkson’s authentically rugged take onthe classic movie western.

Fri Mar 4, 9:40 pmEmpire Theatre 1

The trauma of war is the focus of this drama, whichmarks a strong directorial debut for Ryan Redford.Garret Dillahunt stars as the title character, a vet-

eran who arrives one day on the doorstep of the warbuddy who once saved his life. His friend feels a respon-sibility to the brother in arms, but his wife Irene – playedby the one and only Molly Parker – is far more aware ofthe threat this visitor poses to her family. Redford’s filmis a somber, beautifully acted parable about violence, guilt and healing.

WATERON THE TABLE

YOUARE HERE

Canadians’ confidence in their dominion over thiscountry’s internationally coveted fresh water sup-ply will be shaken by this eye-opening documen-

tary. Liz Marshall creates a compelling portrait of MaudeBarlow as the seemingly tireless activist spends aneventful year as a senior advisor on water issues for theUnited Nations. Barlow goes wherever the battle takesher, whether it’s a fact-finding excursion to the Albertatar sands, community meetings over a proposed landfillin Simcoe County or the halls of the UN in New York. Thegorgeous cinematography by Steve Cosens providesdramatic views of what’s exactly at stake.

Sat Mar 5, 9:30 pmEmpire Theatre 2Rating: 14A

One of Canada’s most prolific and gifted youngfilmmakers, Denis Côté makes a major advancewith this wry and sometimes surreal story about

a small-town handyman and his withdrawn adolescentdaughter, played by the actual father-and-daughterteam of Emmanuel and Philomène Bilodeau. They live avery quiet life in a wintry corner of rural Quebec, a placewhere the local bowling alley provides the closest thingto excitement. Balancing an austere visual style withmoments of grace, humour and sheer strangeness,Côté’s fifth feature in five years is his most accomplishedand compelling to date.

Director: Dominic DesjardinsScreenplay: Dominic DesjardinsProducer: Dominic Desjardins, Rayne ZukermanPrincipal Cast: Melanie Leblanc, Antoine Gratton,Marc LamontagneLanguage: French with English subtitlesRuntime: 76 minutes

This sweet first feature by Dominic Desjardins is thefirst Franco-Ontarian fiction film to be made in twodecades. Desjardins sought to make a movie that

touched on many issues faced by Francophones living inEnglish Canada. He succeeds with this warm-hearted ro-mantic comedy about Zoe, a young Acadian who de-cides to hitchhike from Vancouver to Prince EdwardIsland. Before she leaves, she meets Alex, a fellow Fran-cophone who’s so smitten with Zoe, he joins her on thejourney. Desjardins’ effort is a truly Canadian road movie, one that makes a valuable effort to bridge our two soli-tudes with humour and insight.
