Lucky numbers this week: This week’s odds favor Aries winners
with the luckiest number being 8.
Did You Know...Olive origins: The scientific name for olive trees is Olea
europea. These trees can live for hundreds of years. The olive
fruit is not eaten right off the tree, as it is too bitter. Olives are
eaten after being cured.Accidental toy: The Slinky toy was invented by Richard
James in 1943. A naval engineer, James was trying to use
springs to find a way to keep fragile devices steady during use
on ships. When he accidentally knocked over a spring, he saw
its potential as a toy.Painting in blue: When Spanish artist Pablo Picasso
(1881-1973) was in his early twenties, he went through his
“Blue Period” of painting. During this time, he used various
shades of blue as the dominant color in his work. Sled dog: The Chinook dog breed originated in the state of
New Hampshire (US) in the early 1900s. A cross between a
farm dog and a husky, Chinooks are gentle and intelligent,
and were originally bred to pull sleds.Standing tall: The highest mountain in the Western
Hemisphere is Cerro Aconcagua, or “Rock Sentinel.” Part of
the Andes Mountain Range in the Province of Mendoza
(Argentina), Aconcagua stands approximately 6,960 meters
(22,835 feet) above sea level.
On the Lighter SideMiddle age is when the narrow waist and the broad mind
begin to change places. Judge: “I’ll have order in this court! Order in this court!”Plaintiff: “I’ll have a hamburger with onions.”How do you milk an ant? First you get a very low stool….His trouble is too much bone in the head and not enough in
the back.Hard: an easy word that means difficult.

The thief, Steven Reid, along with anaccomplice, had broken into an elderly woman’s home, stealingseveral pieces of jewelry in the process. The loot included a ringthat Reid gave his girlfriend when he asked her to marry him.Unfortunately for Reid, his girlfriend was honest. She had seenmedia reports of the crime, including pictures of the ring, andturned him in. The thief ended up with jail time.White sand: In Australia, Whitehaven Beach is located onWhitsunday Island in the Coral Sea, off the coast ofQueensland. Like its name, this beach is very white. That’sbecause the sand is made of almost pure silica, which is whiterand of finer texture than the sand found on other beaches. When walking on this seven-kilometer (4.3-mile) stretch ofshoreline in bare feet, the sand is said to feel like velvet. Andbeachgoers don’t have to worry about the sand being too hot;silica does not retain heat as well as other beach sands. To keepthe beach pristine, dogs and cigarettes are not allowed.Brothers by birth: Playing together as children and growing upto be best friends for life, two men in Hawaii (US) were amazed tofind out, after knowing each other for more than 60 years, thatthey are biological brothers. The two are Alan Robinson, who wasadopted, and Walter Macfarlane, who was raised by his mother butdidn’t know his father. Unbeknownst to each other, the brothersstarted searching for answers to their ancestry, and they coinciden-tally used the same specialized website. Turns out they have thesame biological mother. Everybody’s Talking!Bear scare: Two women in the northern Canadian city ofWhitehorse, Yukon, had to take evasive action to get away froma mama bear, which had two cubs in tow. Michelle Beaulieuand Anya Zimmerman were biking along a narrow trail near theYukon River when the protective mother confronted them. The women ended up abandoning their bikes and swimmingacross the river to the other side. Luckily, a boat came along. The driver picked them up, retrieved their bikes, and got themsafely out of the area.Looking for dinner: Diners in a restaurant in the town ofCanmore, Alberta (Canada), got quite a surprise when a bearwandered in through the open doors to check things out. Thecooking aroma coming from the Gaucho Brazilian Barbecuemust have been too much to resist. The young bear scared therestaurant’s customers, but didn’t stay long. After only a fewseconds, it turned around and walked out, taking another lookthrough the window before running away. Peter Holub, therestaurant’s owner, plans to keep the front door closed fromnow on.Sticky stuff: A certain type of glue made by an industrialadhesives company in Germany really sticks. DELO went togreat lengths to show the strength of its brand of strong glue.Company representatives arranged to suspend a truck, whichweighed over 17.20 metric tons (37,919 lbs.), one meter abovethe ground by attaching it to a crane using a small amount oftheir glue. The stunt worked. The glue held the truck offthe ground for an hour. Because this adhesive is used in theautomotive industry and is not commercially available, it’s notpossible to get it at a local hardware store! Waterlogged: Television reporters will do lots of things to gettheir stories to viewers, but Azadar Hussain of Pakistan didsomething unique to bring the plight of his country into the lime-light. Kot Chatta, in Pakistan’s Punjab region had experienceddamaging flooding, so Hussain decided to stand in floodwaters, with only his head, hand, and microphone above water. Fromthere, he proceeded to do his report of the repercussions of theflooding. Although what he did could be perceived as dangerous, the reporter was able to attract worldwide attention from hison-location newscast.
