How would you describe your job? As a WFLA photojournalist I have the opportunity to tell compelling stories, work as content video editor for the newscast and report and gather story content for anchor packages and other duties. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?I am more of an “under-the-radar” type of person. I work to contribute the most by doing the best I can in all facets to ensure we put out the best product possible. I started with Media General in the early stage of convergence. I went from a night photo editor (Tampa Tribune) to a multi-media trainer and visual leader to an assignment desk editor for WFLA. At each of these positions I have worked to perform at the highest level and lead others through the ever-changing times.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? Many of my colleagues may not know of my competitive past. I have competed as a speed skater, a highly competitive bowler, I have a golfing hole-in-one, was a head drum major of the Florida A&M University Marching “100” Band and was given a day in my honor for a performance in Paris, France.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My wife and former Media General reporter Elizabeth Lee Brown.

How would you describe your job? I work with the smartest, most talented people I’ve ever known, and together we make digital work that we, and our customers, can be proud of. I have the privilege to lead one of HYFN’s great technology teams. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? My talented colleagues and I work every day to make HYFN a leading technology and creative agency. We have helped make HYFN8, our social media platform, an industry success and a key asset. I’ve helped the Technology team deliver on key projects, and to work together more effectively.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?I’d be surprised if they didn’t know everything at this point, but here’s the rundown: I’m a Texan, a husband, a cook, a former music producer, a gamer and a coder. I like good whiskey, great food and a laugh with family and friends. I’ve been fired by B-list celebs (ask me in person). I play the saxophone. I don’t like okra.

How would you describe your job? Never dull. I am a story teller. I tell the stories of people, issues, and events. From “Winter Whiteouts” and breaking news to city council meetings and WSU Shocker basketball games, I get to cover it all. Love what do! I enjoy where I work! How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?I like to think I bring the philosophy of “work smarter, not harder.” But let me be honest. My contribution is only a drop in the bucket. It’s the newsroom staff and the leadership of our GM, that I support and who supports me, that pushes Media General forward to success.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?I used to sing in a barbershop quartet. And we sang the National Anthem in the Houston Astrodome. Full disclosure, our group was on a tour of the Dome and it was empty.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My very understanding, very patient, and very supportive and loving wife Pam. She is my partner in crime and I’m so blessed she is with me to share this great honor.

How would you describe your job? I was the main writer, shooter, and editor for commercial productions. I worked closely with the sales team and clients to make sure their commercials delivered positive results. I was recently named Promotion Manager, and now work with the best team in town to promote every aspect of the number one station in the market.

How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? My work ethic, creativity, and client focus helped to double commercial production revenue. I work with a great team at WANE, and I’m excited to have new opportunities to continue to learn and grow in the years ahead!

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?My “stress relief ” is writing music and playing guitar in a rock band. We’ve played some of the biggest stages in town, including a sold-out 2,500-seat theater. We’re called I, Wombat, thanks for asking!

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My wife Margey will be making the trip with me. She is my biggest supporter and deserves the trip more than I do. She puts up with those late nights/early mornings/weekends I put in, while juggling her own busy schedule and taking care of our four kids.

Lou CucinelliPromotion Manager11 years at WANEFt. Wayne, Indiana

How would you describe your job? I’m the guy that makes sure that the things you’re seeing/hearing are the things you should be seeing/hearing. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? It’s a team effort, really. We work to give our increasingly tech-friendly audience the best possible information using the best possible avenues, using technology to stay connected to the viewers, and making sure they have the latest, most accurate information available.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? When I was younger, I wanted to be a math teacher. Come to find out, I don’t have the teaching gene…or the math gene, really.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip? One of my oldest friends, Aaron English. We’ve been friends since college.

How would you describe your job? While my primary job is weather for Good Morning Richmond and 8News at 9 am, I am also the host of Showcase Richmond and very active with all station projects to help push our brand and station image. I spend many hours working on other projects behind the scenes both on-air and in the digital world. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? While I am 100% committed to everything that I/we do at WRIC, there are two projects that I really donate a tremendous amount of time and effort toward. One is my School Kids of the Day, which is my way to showcase students in our market heading to school. This project blew up this year with nearly 800 submissions so far! My other major project is the 100,000 Meals Campaign. Working with a local dry cleaners, Puritan Cleaners, we were able to raise more than 140,000 meals last year alone for Feed More, the non-profit organization that gives meals to those in need in Central Virginia. The 2014 number of 140,000 meals was up from 123,000 meals in 2013, and in our first year, roughly six years ago, we only did about 65,000 meals. We are striving to do 200,000 meals in 2015! Both of these projects have the obvious on-air portion, showing the donation or showing the kids on air, but I also tweet and Facebook pictures and videos of food collections or children who are the school kids of the day.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? Most of my colleagues know everything about me, as I am kind of an open book, at least with my immediate team. However, most of the rest of the station probably doesn’t know that I am deathly afraid of roller coasters! I am a scientist, I understand all about physics, but I completely don’t trust the laws of physics when it comes to roller coasters.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My wife, Darlene DiNardo.

Matt DiNardoMorning and 9:00 a.m. Meteorologist11 years at WRICRichmond, Virginia

“I am very active with all station projects to help push our brand and station image.”

How would you describe your job? A lot of everything. Our Special Projects unit produces between 30 and 50 original stories per sweeps period, so we all have to be multi-faceted. Our entire group can research, shoot, write, and edit a story. We wouldn’t be able to function otherwise. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? We go into every story thinking about all of the platforms it will appear on. That means besides making it look great on TV, we want to provide compelling content online to support it.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?I know how to operate a lot of heavy machinery because my dad owned a construction company.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My wonderful wife Jillian. There’s no way I’d be here without her taking care of our family and her support during periods of long hours.

Nicholas DomingsSenior Investigative Producer7 years at WPRI & WNACProvidence, Rhode Island

How would you describe your job? Never dull. I always enjoy a good challenge and working in IT consistently does just that. Almost every day presents something new. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? To me, it’s just doing my job. Working in IT puts me in a unique position which allows me to interact with everyone in all departments. It’s a great feeling when you can help someone solve a problem they’re facing, even if it’s just a small one, but if it helps them complete their job then it moves Media General forward.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? Most people probably don’t know that I’m also a blacksmith. It’s fascinating to see what you can create by moving metal.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My wife, Doris.

How would you describe your job? It is an every day challenge to best present stories that are most ‘clickable’ to the Dayton community. It involves the love of writing, the love of news and sometimes, the love of weirdness that people want to read on line. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? For me, it is a matter of working hard every day, meeting the standards set forth by the company and constantly learning about new media in every format and how to best utilize it in my work.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?I am an avid collector of Wizard of Oz movie memorabilia. I have an entire room packed full of artifacts, the oldest dating back to 1939. You could say I’m an Oz hoarder in need of an intervention.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My sister, Susan, is the person who I rely upon most. She is always ready to lend an ear, help me work through any problem and always up for a trip to Mexico! Who better to take along than my best friend?

How would you describe your job? This is a funny question, for the answer may vary dependent upon who you are and where you work. If you are news and have breaking news events, I’m the one to put you on the air and drop breaks if needed. If you are in promotions and promos need to be changed, I’m the one to make those changes. If you are traffic and need those formats for special events or need to make political changes, I’m your guy. If you are a transmitter engineer and your transmitter starts acting up or you lose a tower light, I’m on the job to get that NOTAM filed with the FCC and give you a wake call to inform you of that failing transmitter. If you are a fellow CBO operator and have been here when a tour has come through, forget all you have previously read because we get paid to watch TV. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?I was chosen to take a trip to the Columbus HUB to train the operators and ensure that they had a strong understanding of how things were operated. If there is a need for me to fill in for the supervisor or just keep CBO up and running when the manager is away, I’m the one for the job.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?My colleagues may not know that I have a twin sister.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My lovely wife, Sherry, of 18 years will be accompanying me on the trip.

Markette “Mark” Eison Central Broadcast Engineer 20 years at Master Control HUB Operations (WSPA & WYCW)Greenville/Spartanburg, SC

How would you describe your job? The beauty of my job is that there are so many ways to describe it, depending on the day. I am the traffic cop of news. I come across so many different stories, different versions of those stories and different ways to drive those stories home. I have to manage the flow and delivery of information. The goal, though, is always the same: to be responsible in our approach and delivery and hopefully engage our viewers and effect change where change is needed. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? My biggest contribution is being that leader who encourages everyone to pitch their ideas and giving credit where credit is due. I think listening to every idea, no matter how small, is valuable for a truly innovative team which is what’s behind many successful companies today.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? We’re a tight-knit group at work and I spend most of my time working or with my husband, three awesome, rambunctious boys and that is a wrap. I might work in trying to be more mysterious for my next year’s resolution.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My husband Victor.

Evelyn FernandezManaging Editor 7 years at WCBDCharleston, South Carolina

How would you describe your job? Other than with my wife and children, my job at WAVY is my love affair. I am absolutely sure I am doing what I was put on this earth to do, and I treasure every day I do it. I go to bed at night, as we all do in this business, knowing I made a difference in my community. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?I love Twitter. I love linking Twitter to Facebook. I am amazed how many follow me on Twitter, and I like pushing them to WAVY during the day to watch the story I am working on. We have become, as a station, very cognizant on delivering our product on several platforms. I am also convinced that in 1983 I could not have constructed those sentences nor know what they mean. That is how our business has changed.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? When I drive, usually at night, I turn up Sirius Channel # 70 (The Blues Channel) and play air guitar, or air piano pretending and dreaming of what might have been had I not worked at WAVY.

Who will you be traveling with on the COE trip?My one and only, Joan. We are married 20 years on December 2. One of many reasons I married Joan was I knew she would be an excellent mother. To marry Joan was the smartest decision I ever made.

How would you describe your job? I do whatever is needed. I start my day by meeting with the morning show team. We talk about the show, stacking, what worked, and what can we do better. We then discuss our coverage plans for the next morning. My next task is planning coverage for the day, followed by the morning story meeting. Put out fires that pop-up during the morning. 1pm meeting with the producers, more firefighting, and then planning for the next day. I end the day with a little 5 and 6pm news. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?Fourteen years ago, the State Supreme Court allowed camera access to court hearings, and at that time I volunteered to be the Media Coordinator. For the next several years, I worked to make the court open to the media, and reached out to the court to extend the access to the circuit courts. Three and a half years ago the courts gave us the access and it has been very successful. In 2012, I was named the South Dakota Broadcaster of the Year because of my work with the courts.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?How shoes helped define my life. From the red cowboy boots, the only shoes I remember growing up, to my early years at KELO and the shoes that earned me my nickname “Dexter.”

How would you describe your job? I’m always finding new ways to deliver our product and taking challenges to a whole new level, which makes this invigorating and rewarding all at the same time. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?Never be complacent in your job duties, learn all you can, lead by example, deliver on all multimedia platforms, and give back to the community. As a meteorologist, there’s more than just standing in front of the green screen: my philosophy is to take it out to the public by way of community involvement. Hundreds of folks can be introduced to our product by making them part of it through social media. There are several ways I do this — my best example for our success begins with monthly running events. A typical participation of 400 runners to nearly 3,000 twice a year for marathons become WRBL’s trademark in the community. I tie in a weather forecast, participate, promote on-air (live web-stream at the finish line), add to all web and social platforms, tie-in health and wellness, and finally host the final event by drawing folks into the charity the run supports. It now becomes a story, and WRBL leads the way with an incredible brand of giving back and a great return for marketing our product. This equals more impressions and builds on the success of Media General, Inc.’s brand and equity.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?I wear my heart on my sleeve, so in many ways most of my personality has been revealed. I do have a very sensitive side being surrounded by all these women in my life…My wife, three daughters, and one granddaughter.

How would you describe your job? There’s rarely a dull moment at KHON. I’ve learned over the years how crazy this industry can be, but getting to support so many hard-working individuals has been a truly gratifying experience. I often remind myself that I work for the people who are “Working for Hawaii.” A big MAHALO to my coworkers for all the recognition they have given me. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?Formerly the Digital Manager at our station, I joined our engineering team to get back to my IT roots. We have already made tremendous strides in reorganizing our network infrastructure, and we are continuing to improve the way each department operates every day. It’s an exciting time.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you? Many at the station already know this secret, but I have a twin brother. He also has an unusual name, and we’ve determined that ESP does not exist.

How would you describe your job? I love my job, but most people outside of the TV business have no idea what a Traffic Manager does. I tell them that it’s like putting a puzzle together. I take all the different scheduling aspects of a TV station from each department and make sure that everything fits together just right every day. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?Working inventory as far ahead as possible is essential in this business; no one likes surprise pre-emptions, although they do still occasionally happen. When inventory is tight during a political window or when we are going through something like March Madness and losing regular programming, it pays to have things cleaned up ahead of time.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?The music is always playing in my office and most days you will probably catch me singing along. I have a bookshelf in my office dedicated to my Wonder Woman collection. This is my second time at KIMT. The first was from 1997 to 2000, and then I moved to Denver, Colorado and worked for KTVD for six years. When the station was sold, I moved back home and eventually came back to where I started from.

How would you describe your job? My job is great because every day has something new to learn, see, or tell.I’m just a professional storyteller. Every day is another chapter waiting to be told. No time to be bored. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? It’s all about presentation and delivery. Every producer I work with and show I work on, it’s all about telling people something they may not otherwise know. Getting people the right news is better than getting it to them first. We push the limit on breaking news and weather, trying to get people to keep watching the news and hopefully pull in a few new viewers at the same time.

How would you describe your job? I help make branded content worth consuming. From a marketing standpoint, I work with clients to help brand messaging come to life through content – whether it’s video, blog or social – and meet their specific KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). Editorially, I aim to exceed expectations by selecting the right mix of creators whose strengths and mission align with campaign goals.

How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company?I am fortunate to have a granular perspective of industry changes – hearing from creators and being a creator is essential to understanding the direction of native advertising and branded content. But I’ve been in a unique position to contextualize this for the Content Strategy team and Federated Media from a strategic big-picture point of view, resulting in key partnerships with new creators, third party analytics providers and new campaign format, structure and workflow, helping better serve our clients – positioning FM and Media General as great partners and leaders.

How would you describe your job? Everything can change in an instant while working at the desk, and it has an effect on the entire course of the day and every newscast. As an assignment editor, I gather information and assign crews to news stories with value to our viewers. The top priority is to be first and to be right with fresh information and breaking news. This puts and keeps WIVB ahead of the competition.

How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? It is important for me to be a positive and professional reflection of Media General on a daily basis. This means being polite while taking calls and respectful to everyone I encounter inside and outside of the station. How would you describe your job? I would describe my job as a complex adventure of personal stories, hours of research, and the creative presentation of facts that give people a better understanding of their community. We have fun, and as cliché as is sounds, my ultimate goal really is to just to make a difference by empowering people with information. How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? My two-person team and I started the Investigative Unit at our station a year ago and it’s been growing ever since. We focus on long-form investigative journalism, and my goal is to bring storytelling back to information-based reporting. The TV story is always my primary focus, but we are always using social media to drive people to our site to keep the clicks coming. Online, we fill our stories with interactive maps, databases, extra interviews, new information, and anything else we can to keep the conversation new and engaging. I love to push the idea of what news is “supposed to look like” and am so thankful to work for a station that supports new ideas.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?My other passion is music. I play guitar and use it as a stress reliever to balance out the everyday stress this business brings.

How would you describe your job? Exciting, crazy, never a dull moment, sometimes time-consuming, deadline- driven, but mostly rewarding! I cannot think of a better job that allows me to do what I truly love and provides me the opportunity to work with an amazing group of people and hopefully make a difference in the community. As one of the anchors of Good Morning Tennessee and WATE Six on Your Side News at 4 I get to wear many hats: everything from anchor to producer to station liaison. One of the biggest jobs I have is listening to our viewers. We want to know what’s on their minds, their concerns, and how we can help. Without question, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is taking part in our stations “6 On Your Side Day of Service” events. Each month we volunteer our time to assist area non-profits. It’s a great opportunity to get out and work side by side with our neighbors as we look to better the Knoxville and East Tennessee community together.

How have you helped to make Media General an industry-leading multi-media company? One of the things I have always enjoyed is getting the opportunity to work with some of our younger talent. My mother was a high school teacher and that opportunity to teach or mentor others has always stuck with me. I never profess to know everything or say my way is the “right way”, but I do hope that I can offer up suggestions that a new reporter/anchor can take with them as they develop their own style. The end result is a stronger reporter/anchor which translates into an overall better news product.

What is something your colleagues don’t know about you?WATE is actually my second stop at a Media General station. My first was back in the mid-to-late 90s when I served as the Sports Director at WCBD in Charleston, South Carolina for seven years.
