Every one of us wants to experience that moment where we realise we have done it, we have become the best we could be.

So we log. We cut trees, process trees and sell trees. Many of us want to have our own logging businesses one day but we look at the crew we work in today and it seems an impossible task. Who has one million dollar to lay out for new equipment today.

Some of us work for others while others work for themselves.

But each of us lives with this desire to experience this mo-ment of realisation that we have made it in life and that we leave something of significance behind. A moment where we realise that if we die today, you have lived a complete life, you gave your best to the world, to your life, to yourself and to those around you. This is our desire.

We therefore need to celebrate those who walk in front of us and set the tone for success. Let the jealousy of the success-ful go and celebrate their success, study them, learn from them and then cut your own path.

One such man is Cody Johnson.

Cody Johnson shows us what can be done today in the mod-ern age. Starting from scratch, with a chain saw in hand and carving his way to success.Having suffered a recent setback it is incredible how this young man is still fixated on his goal – to run a successful logging company...

Here we tell his story on page...

I hope this inspires you to set your dream in motion and in-stead of chasing dreams to start chasing goals.

    Regards and success to you

    - THE TRUE STORY OF CODY JOHNSON -

  • THE BEGINNINGMy logging career began at Paul Smiths College where I majored in wildlife and forestry. I later focused exclusively on forestry and timber harvesting.

My first experience with logging was here at Pauls Smiths College We cut Balsam fir and white pine. The equipment consisted of a 210 Prentice log loader, 440c John Deere Cable Skidder and my old 346xp Husqvarna chainsaw.

The first day I ran that skidder I was hooked on logging. I remem-ber dragging a hitch to the land-ing crew, listening to the motor humming and tire chains clanging, then thinking; “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life and I am gonna start a logging business.”

That same summer an alumni friend (Alyson Bennett)who was also a logger helped me acquire my first private timber contract.

It was a 150 acre tract and was composed of hardwood, red pine, and spruce/fir.

At this time my father (Dennis John-son Jr.) gave me $3,000.00 during the Woodsman Field Days to buy a good sized felling saw and all the basic supplies necessary to be a logger.

    That fall after much determination

and help from my grandfather (Dennis Johnson), I received my first business loan of 55,000.00.

THE SETUPAfter much searching I settled on buying a 2003 dual-arch 648G3 grapple skidder with a winch through a dealer. I also purchased quality chains for all four tires and set up the winch for cable logging.

That winter I had enough work to be able to subcontract other log-gers. I also demoed a 748G3 and 548G3.

I sold my 648G3 later on and purchased my current spread of equipment. This consists of a 2006 single-arch 648G3, 1983 straight 640, and 1989 640D. All of which are John Deere skidders.

    C O N T I N U E D GROWTH

All the work is currently done by my father and I. Dozer work and trucking are sub-contracted, but we plan on pur-chasing a truck and bulldozer in the future. All the cutting is done with chain saws.

My favourite felling and bucking saw is the MS 461 Stihl, but we like our Husqvarna’s to.

    SET BUSINESS STANDARDS

Johnson Forestry & Timber Har-vest LLC is based on professional-ism and sustainable harvesting of our forest products.

Most times we work with uneven aged forests, so we are harvesting timber 18 inches and up.

We also harvest the cull trees (low grade wood) of virtually any size.

We usually thin or clear cut/patch clear cut Pine, Spruce, and Fir.

Directional felling is critical; especially in hardwood stands to minimize residual stand damage.

  • - inspiration - - the inspirational story of cody Johnson -

    9 myloggermag april 2018

    S E L E C T I N G EQUIPMENT

ACCORDINGLYOur favourite logging machines are larger sized cable skidders, although we also utilize grapple skidders. Grapple Skidders cause more damage generally, since you have to back the whole machine up to every tree you cut. For this reason we only use them as needed on liquidation cuts and select cuts, where the risk for residual stand damage is low.

Any grapple skidder we purchase has a winch. That way we can pull cable on steep inclines or in dense tree growth if we need to.If we could only pick one machine to log with, it would be the cable skidder. Our equipment setup allows us to do top quality work in almost any type of logging environment.

The majority of residual damage occurs from bringing a tree from the stump to the main skid trail.

    BEING VERSATILE

We cut mostly saw logs and ve-neer, but a small percentage of our work includes cutting pulp and fire wood. We bore-cut almost all our trees, with the exception of small diameter pine.

Cutting methods are critical and so we have several methods of cutting that we use in different situations to insure safety, minimal residual stand damage as well as prevent-ing any damage to the logs such as barber chairing, pull outs etc that could potentially reduce their value.

  • PERSISTENCE T H R O U G H

STRUGGLEI worked hard to build my business. It was extremely difficult. Every-thing from getting loans, to buying equipment, unscrupulous dealers and break downs were thrown at us. We continued to push through these challenges. I learned so much.

Weather was also a big obsta-cle but we have learned to work around that as well by contracting different properties that allow us to adapt to the weather and utilizing different equipment for different circumstances.

On Friday, October 27th, my father and I went deer hunting for the first time in two years on a property we had just finished cutting. Later that day my father bought me a good lunch and we discussed upcoming contracts that fell on my lap. Our business was about to significantly expand after all those years of hard work.

I had also just completed my Mas-ter Logging Certification and au-dits, being one of only two in New York State to have their Master Logger Certification.

    MY LATEST CHALLENGE

I remember leaving my father that day after our late lunch. We talked a bit and I headed out.

I was driving along in my truck thinking about all these new ex-citing business prospects, one of which was roughly 2,000 acres.

We had even gone as far as con-tacting a local Tiger Cat dealer-ship to look into purchasing all the necessary equipment to run a large scale mechanized operation to accommodate our new potential contracts.

Little did I know, as fate would have it, it would be the last time I would see my family for over two months.

My truck and another vehicle col-lided. My vehicle burst into flames upon impact.

I was unconscious from that day in October until two days before Christmas. I suffered second and severe third degree burns over 60% of my body. A lot of tissue was removed from over half of my body.

I had metal rods placed in my right tibia and left femur to repair my fractured legs. A colostomy was also necessary due to my catastrophic injuries. According to my doctors my mor-tality rate was extremely high.

    HAVING A S U P P O R T

STRUCTUREMy parents went through hell over those many days and weeks advo-cating for me.

After I woke, it was many weeks of significant pain, worry and every trial you can think of.

I was finally taken of the critical list in early January and admitted into an inpatient physical therapy boot camp.

I went through several weeks of in-tense occupational and physical therapy. It was long and painful.

  • - inspiration - - the inspirational story of cody Johnson -

    13 myloggermag april 2018

AFTER EFFECTSThe realization of the impact this would have on me and on my busi-ness was devastating.

We lost two contracts as my dad was by my side along with my mother almost every single day for three and a half months during my time in the hospital. I was finally discharged in late February. I am currently at home and my parents manage my care and continued physical therapy daily.

This devastated our finances. We received no financial reimburse-ment from the accident as it is still under investigation. We lost most of our chain saws, transfer tank, and all of our tools including safety equipment.

To keep our head above water we recently sold our grapple skidder.

    STAY FOCUSED ON THE DREAM

I’m thankful to be alive and focused on working to grow the business once again, with my dad.

We are working with a forester to find more property for this summer and into the next winter.

In the meantime there isn’t much we can accomplish in the woods

due to the weather so I am trying to enjoy this downtime with my family.

I’m trapping with my dad, although very difficult for me, it is something I enjoy and try to use as part of my physical therapy.

I’m also working on other business ventures to expand our logging business. I do not know what the future holds but I do know I won’t quit. I have worked too hard.

In the meantime I have my dad and friends that are professionals in the industry that want to work with me.

I truly care about the woods, the clients I work for and instituting the best, safest and most sustainable logging practices that exist. That includes my continued education on new logging practices, invasive species, diseases and insects that influence forestry.

I will always ensure that as a log-ger I find the best markets for our client’s wood to insure they get the greatest value. I get great satisfac-tion when our clients comment on how well our work was done and the smile they have when they get paid well.Reputation and integrity are key.

    I have a vision.

I will continue to rehabilitate myself until someday I’m holding my old 461 in my hands and felling trees again. - Cody Johnson -

    >BUSINESS

We all start our businesses to make money. That is essentially why you dream of having your own business, cut down wood and sell wood to a mill.

If you follow the natural path of how many start a business most of us play the same game in the beginning – the excel millionaire spreadsheet game.

If I cut this much wood and turn them into logs, then if I sell this many logs at this specific price I will be a millionaire in so many years.

    H O W W E S TA R T

Next we work out how many staff members we need to fill some essential roles. We may even take it further and plan machinery to be a part of the whole business plan. This many machines will deliver this much wood etc. and this is my repayment plan. That is what most of us have done in the beginning of our businesses.

  • - business - - measure to succeed -

    19 myloggermag april 2018

Then the business starts and soon we get engulfed into the day to day running of the business, filling in for staff, mak-ing sure the machines get repaired and wood is hitting the ground on a regular basis.

After a while we realise we are that en-tangled into the running’s of the business that that is pretty much all we do. We cannot work out why we are losing money as a whole or why we are losing staff members. We have no idea why we are losing contracts or when we will get to the end of the tunnel to see some light.

Our work hours have increased and we barely get some sleep and you find....

Owning a business is about setting things in place that will create success.

Your responsibility as a business owner is to ensure certain things happen on a regular basis and not necessarily get too deeply involved in the doing of these things.

Yes, off course, in the beginning of any business it is then necessary to get in-volved so that eventually you can earn enough to replace yourself. And that is how most businesses are built. However you should aim to develop a strategy so that you are no longer needed to work in the business but rather on the business.

The best way to describe this is maybe to use the analogy of a sports coach.

The coach does not play the game him-self, he merely sets the strategy on how to win a game. Then he sets in place an exercise program, ensure the play-ers exercise regularly, stay fit, obey the rules and focus on the goal – winning.

When games are lost he will not only an-alyse the game played, he will also ana-lyse the strategy he used to prepare his players. He will move players around, see where there is room for improve-ment and ensure the new game plan is followed, but never do you see a coach play the game himself or fill in for some-one.

Why do we do this in our businesses? Why do we get that entrenched into the doing that we never get time to work out a better strategy etc? Why do we fill in for individuals when they do not turn up for work and only then start to look for replacements? Why are we not training people inside our crews to be able to step up to es-sential roles to keep wood flowing out of the forest when an employee reports in

sick or are not able to come to work for a period of time.

    STOP AND ASKTHE RIGHT

QUESTIONSWhat is the best strategy for your busi-ness? How do you get to a place where you can work on the business and not in the business? ...

    Start to measure everything.

What are you measuring? Have you be-come a player in your own game, in your own team?Do you measure the abilities of your em-ployees? Do you measure the amount of time they actually spend doing their work? Do you measure fuel usage, chain usage, time off work, time on the job, the time it takes for staff to do nonessen-tial tasks? Do you have a staff rotation plan where they can fill in for each other to keep wood flowing? This too can be measured. When last did you sit down to look at all the things you measure to see if you can do better?

    Destination–Wandoan in Southern Queens-land, Australia.

The hot summer days and dry land with Lance trees were waiting for the delivery of a Log Max 6000B.

The distance to site is 1190 km from the workshop. Knowing this the preparation gets some extra attention to ensure that nothing is forgotten that is needed to complete yet another successful Log Max delivery.

The Log Max 6000B processor is famous for its durability and power. As a customer once said, everything you can fit in the head, you can feed through.

What makes this specific processor special is that it is equipped with a brand new JPS rotary actuator saw unit. It is one of a kind and you could feel the ex-citement to see this perform in the field. The JPS rotary actuator saw unit enables you to run a 404 or ¾ saw.

It is extremely easy to change from one to the other and it takes roughly only 30 min-utes to change between them. It uses the same saw motor and you only change the bar clamp and sprocket. As the name suggests, it works like a rotator for the bar feed which means no cylinder in the saw box and no exposed hoses that is normally used to drive the saw bar cylinder in and out. the Jps rotary saw unit

The base machine that the 6000B was being fitted to already had a harvester head on it before so it made the installation easier with power and hydraulics already hooked up to the base machine.

The Log Mate 500 that drives the Log Max and which is also Log Max’s own computer system was fitted in the base machine.

Daniel Soerling , the technical sup-port engineer who was responsi-ble for the installation says that the Log Mate 500 is most likely one of the easiest systems to understand and use on the market today.

The delivery of this machine into Lance wood attracted some inter-esting spectators.

One of which was a resident Goan-na who tracked every move that was made every single day during the installation of the machine.

and together with the rotary actua-tor bar feed it’s definitely a unit that’s hard to beat.

TTT Logging who bought the pro-cessor works along way out in the forest. It is a 1 1/2 hour drive one way to the closest hydraulic shop.

That means they need machinery that will work all day, every day. Log Max is that kind of head and if something goes wrong Scandi-navian Forestry and engineering have a large number of spare parts in stock at all times!

After a couple of weeks driving the processor, the owner of TTT Log-ging, Don said: “it performs admi-rably”. He’s more than happy how this head performs in Lance wood which is a hardwood species. Don wants to try this processor in other types of hardwood as well.

Leaving both the head, a happy customer and a curious Goanna behind, it can easily be said that Daniel from Scandinavian Forest-ry and Engineering from Tumut did another amazing delivery of a Log Max processor in Australia.

We were to be honest slightly taken aback by the question because we really though that people want to get rid of their debts. Isn’t that part of why we want to become millionaires - to get rid of the debt?

    So we did a study...

We polled 200 loggers and asked a simple question.

Do you have debt, or do you owe enough money to someone else that you would not be able to pay it back within three months.

We tallied all the answers together and we were surprised to find that out of the 200 people that we polled only two came back with a no. Only two people out of two hundred could pay all the money they owed others within three months. Not too hard to guess who they were.

They were students who just finished university and who got their tuition paid by their parents – thus owing no one money other than what they

  • 33 myloggermag april 2018

    - wealth -- millionaire - start correctly-

borrowed from time to time, but they would be able to pay this back within three months and be debt free.

But that does not answer the question we had, why do people ask us why do we talk about debt so much in our columns. It was almost as if they wanted to stop thinking about the debt but the col-umns’ topic reminded them about the fact that they still owed others money.

Have you come to that point in your life where you have settled in your mind that you will always have debt?

Do you now just pay whatever you owe and just keep going until the next thing fails or get old and just purchase it with borrowed money – a credit card or personal loan? The February issue of MYLOGGER-MAG was dedicated to personal de-velopment and the essence of each segment was that we look at our whole lives and become the best we could be in all areas of our lives not just one area.

So would being without debt be a sign that you are now becoming the best you could be in our financial life?Have you made that decision yet to be the best you could be in your fi-nances and stop living the life of bor-rowed money? You see many of us dream about be-ing millionaires but being a millionaire does not mean that you will be with-out debt. Even dreaming of being a millionaire

while you still have thoughts in your mind about the debts you have gives you a bit of a sour taste doesn’t it. It means you will have to share your million dollars or a part of it to those you owe money to.

You see, this is the backbone of our financial dreams – make being debt free the first dream towards becom-ing financially independent – dream the dream to be debt free. Now make the decision to work to-wards being debt free.

I have made the decision that this year I will be debt free. I will owe no man a cent or a dollar. Not a bank, a person or an institution.

It is the best feeling in the world to

  • have made that specific decision be-cause it sets you on a path where you are not bound by the thought – my life will always be in the negative.

This month our wealth section is not about how to get out of debt – it is about inspiring you to make that deci-sion – I will have no debt.

It is hard work, don’t get me wrong but every day I wake up and say these words – I will have no debt. It inspires me to do other things that will grow my life, work hard, focus on growth and be the best I can be, even in my finances.

    I WILL HAVE NO DEBT...

What do you say to yourself?

    LET IT ALSO BE –

    I WILL HAVE NO DEBT

    - technology news -- new technology for forestry - sany in australia -

For years now we’ve seen the rise of China as an industrial and manufac-turing powerhouse with their goods shipped to every corner of the world.

Many have been sceptical of the quality of Chinese manufacturing with good reason in some cases.

China is also a powerhouse when it comes to manufacturing construction equipment, home to the largest market for the sales of construction equipment with the likes of Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi and Kobelco all with significant manufacturing facilities and supply bases located in China, supplying their products to the world and the domestic Chinese market.

Among the many hundreds of con-struction equipment manufacturers in China, Sany has risen to the top to become the number one manu-facturer of construction equipment in China, beating their International rivals in the domestic China market.

Sany has now set their sights on competing with their rivals in other markets outside of China. In 2012 Randalls Equipment Company

imported their first Sany excavator to Australia having reached an agree-ment with Sany to become a dealer in Australia for the Forestry market with the objective of providing contractors with a high quality, low cost solution for log loading and roadside debarking.

“We looked at the applications and

contractors did not need any of the technology with regards to emis-sions and electronics that is now difficult to avoid on many of the other brands on the market” said Peter Randalls, Managing Director of Randalls Equipment Company.

“Our customers demand reliability and service at a reasonable price and we could see that Sany was offering a quality product at a very reason-able price that would do everything our customers wanted when it came to loading and roadside processing applications” Peter went on to say. Randalls import two models only cur-rently, the 25t SY245F which has a high wide undercarriage and can be fitted with a rotating log grapple or a harvesting head up to 2,000kg

and the 35T SY335C for larger at-tachments up to 3,000kg weight.

Much of the work required to mod-ify the machine to forestry specs is carried out in the Sany factory while Randalls complete the build in their factory in Point Cook with the addition of OPS guarding, light-ing and fire suppression systems.

“Aside from the high quality of fab-ricated components in the Sany, critical components are also top quality with the machines utilis-ing Kawasaki pumps and control valves, an Isuzu Tier 2 (nonelectron-ic) engine and Hy-Dash final drives.

We have made sure we stock all critical and major components for the Sanys here in Australia so we can guarantee uptime and parts availability.”said Davin Frankel, Ran-dalls Sales and Service Manager.

“I have to say that even we have been pleas-antly surprised with the incredible reliability we have experienced with these machines and I can’t think of one customer who has a bad word to say about them” Davin said.

Wake up Dress up shoW up

    The simplest formula for

    success

ake up, Dress up, Show up...

How many times in your life did you change careers or even thought of changing careers?

Don’t stop reading now justbecause you think you have read about this topic so many times.

We are going to give you a secret that may finally un-lock success for you and eliminate the “this time’s” from your life.

How many times in your life have you made decisions... this time... This time I will stay dedicated to my career. This time I will stay dedicat-ed to my exercise program.

    This time...

    W

It is amazing how many times we as human beings start over and yet fail to learn the lesson – the best way to pre-dict the future is to get things done ... consistently. But we choose the normal route - this year I will, this week I will.... today I will.

Want to know why you consistently fail to see things through?

We wait until we “feel” like doing the things that we know that if we follow through with action it will change our lives.

  • 43 myloggermag april 2018

    - wellbeing - Wake up - Dress up - shoW up

How many times have you woken up knowing what you have to do and don’t feel like it and then convince yourself, I will wait until I feel like it, I will wait until I feel more motivated?

We often wake up, sick of our lives and yet we don’t use this as motivation to change our lives. Instead we just don’t feel like it so we just don’t do it.

The best way to win in life....

Every day, wake up, dress up, and show up.

There is nothing simpler than that. It is the simplest formula to success you will find in life. Wake up, dress up, and show up.

    Want proof this formula works?

    It is the simplest

    formula to success

    you will find in

    - wellbeing - Wake up - Dress up - shoW up

Look at the successful people in life.

We tend to see only the end result. We think they just happen to be like that – successful. As if they are human beings who just happen to be born with a sense of style, focus and an ability to create success.

Everything they touch turns to gold and they have the genes to look the way they look, oozing success, confidence and wealth.

What we rarely see is the years it took them to develop that persona of suc-cess, because while they build the character, self-discipline and the fo-cus they needed to be successful, they looked like every other person we deem – not yet successful.

They used to be “just normal people” with one small difference, every day they just woke up, dressed up and showed up.

They never allowed their “feelings” to distract them from toiling every single available moment to attain the main goal – success.

When you have the opportunity to speak to them and analyse their lives the same you do yours, you will find that they too at times feel tired, they too at times just don’t feel like it. Even now that they have reached success they still have moments where they just “don’t feel like it.”

At times they grow tired, restless and

impatient like me and you. But again, there is one small difference between them and you, they learn not to allow their feelings to control their lives, their motivation to succeed or the drive to wake up, dress up and show up.

They just never ever give up.

They relentlessly hold fast to the for-mula - wake up, dress up and show up.

Fix your goals firmly in your mind and make this decision: “For the next thirty days, all I will do is wake up, dress up and show up for every single task that I assigned myself to complete. When I wake up and don’t feel like it, I will get up, dress up and show up. My emotions will not rule me for the next thirty days. I will not wait until I feel like it, I will just wake up, dress up and show up.

Do not make the mistake of looking at the simplicity of this and think it just cannot be the answer you have been looking for all these years. Just try it.

Dedicate 30 days of your life to wake up, dress up and show up and see how your life changes.

    Enjoy success...

build a chest would be proud of

    Consistency is what builds muscle.

Most of us think that to be able to build a fantastic physique you need to go to a gym and do heavy weights. Rest for 48 hours and repeat the ex-ercise.

What builds muscle is having blood flow through a muscle group consist-ently.

When you think back when lumber-jacks still used axes and chain saws to hack down trees, they all had in-credible physiques. They used the same muscle groups daily. The physique of a forestry worker to-day leaves us wondering where it all went wrong.

We have more rules than a jail yard to keep us safe and the pretence of that is to save lives. We stick men in metal cages (machines) and we think we have made them live longer lives by keeping them protected from fall-ing timber.

And yet we forget the effects of sit-ting still and not doing the manual labour we did as lumberjacks in the days of old.

We are breeding heart attacks on two legs.

But many have made the decision to once again build the bodies of Spar-tans. Why not set yourself a target and take

    That’s you starting point.

For the next thirty days every single day repeat the following exercise.

    The simple pushup.

Start today and every day for the next thirty days the challenge is to do 25 pushups daily. As soon as you get up in the morning drop on your all fours and do 25 pushups. That’s it - 25 pushups, nothing more. Do not skip one single day for the next 30 days.

After 30 days take an after photo of the after effects of doing 25 pushups daily for 30 days.

The simplicity of this might make you think - really - my body will change with only 25 pushups a day? Surely not.

Take us up on this challenge and see the difference. Why not make this a group challenge in your crew. 25 pushups daily for 30 days.

If you do decide to make it a group challenge why not do the 25 pushups as a team every morning first thing, in the forest before starting the rest of your work. Build team muscle and at the same time some serious

We are loggers, we get it.

We have tough jobs, we get it.

We are not soft, we do not use face creams like most, we do not mois-turise like most and we do not talk about our feelings. Men of the for-est are men, woman of the forest are woman... Our minds, hearts and determination to get the job done is dressed with a ruggedness that is disappearing from society.

We are a rare species... almost a dy-ing breed of rugged individuals that face wind, snow, hale, mud and sun to get wood on the ground. Being tough minded, covered in dust, mud and saw dust has a way to eat away at our sense of style, our sense of care what others think of us and we do sometimes portray a rudeness to those who do not understand our world - the world of logging.

But there is a danger that we no long-er care what we look like to the ones we love. The one you used to court, date and treat like the angel in your life.Next you don’t mind going to town, dinners and social events with the same clothing you would wear for the forest.

We need to think what we are doing though. We are seen as the leaders in the house. We are also still the one those around us depend on, look up to and respect.

We are modern loggers focused on creating success for ourselves and those we love. When I put my log-ging clothes on I dress myself with the determination to get the job done regardless of what nature throws at me.

But when I get home, I dress myself with the success I have achieved. I ensure that the clothing I wear por-tray to my sons, daughters and my wife that we are okay, the day has been taken care of and we are creat-ing success.

I do not dress like I need a loan or are on social welfare. My dress tells a story in the minds of my children and my wife.

I will therefor ensure that the way I dress will tell a story that yes, today I faced the elements that the nature of my job thrown at me but I got the job done.

Today, through facing the elements but keeping things going I achieved success.

I will dress to ensure that my wife, the one I love and date will feel proud of the one she chose to make her part-ner.I will dress to ensure that my chil-dren are proud to introduce me to their friends and the parents of their friends.
