Principal Post

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Friday March 16, our school will celebrate the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Our Student Council have planned a number of activities to mark this day. If there’s one thing all of our schools could use (and really the world) is more kindness. Consider what might happen if we asked our children “Tell me something kind you did today.” Not all kids are going to get a perfect report card and not all kids are going to excel in sports, music etcetera. So why not spend more time raising good people? The five reasons why asking this question might be helpful and important for school age kids are:

1. It makes for a positive way to discuss the day.

2. It helps children comfortably discuss times when people are unkind.

3. Sometimes it helps adults explain to children what they think is the right or kind thing can be the wrong thing.

4. It can help them plan for a better “next day”

5. Making kids good people is going to make them more successful than anything else.

Raising kind people is harder today because young people are exposed to social media and its realities at a young age. Children no longer leave the playground and forget, as they run the risk of being reminded of any issues experienced during the day on social media when they return home. This makes it more important to focus on kindness at home and at school.

IPad Tips and Tricks

A small band of parents braved the terrible weather on Tuesday

night to attend a helpful presentation from our Yr 6 classroom

teacher Amanda Dossetto and Lead Teacher Innovation Alison

Jones. These teachers shared with parents some great hints on

supporting the appropriate use of their child’s IPad at home.

Sincere thanks to these teachers for giving up precious family

time to work with our parents.

Be generous

Think of ways to play together

For these first three strategies, body language is important. The child needs

Classroom Capers Class

PB This week the RSPCA are coming to visit Prep B. They will discuss the use of items

that pets need. Students will also explore the concept of animals having needs

similar to them.

PT Throughout the term Prep T has been deepening their understanding of the living world. Students have looked at their senses as a tools for discovery, the needs of living things and habitats. This week the RSPCA came to talk to the class about needs of pets and how they are similar to our own needs.

PH We have been learning about the needs of living things in Science. We are making interesting class books using our sight words.

1H We are improving our sentence writing and discussing how words (verbs, nouns and adjectives) describe characters in the stories we have been reading.

1R We have been learning about habitats of living things and how we can care for them. In English we are writing interesting sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives.

1G Have you got the time? Come and ask us... we can help with o'clock times on analogue and digital clocks. We're almost experts knowing all about teen numbers too!

2SD This week we have been learning about compound sentences as well as continuing to read, read, read! In Maths we are adding two digit numbers using the split strategy.

2KD We have been doing lots of writing! We are getting better at writing sentences with interesting words and writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.

2JD We have been working on 2 digit addition and finding friendly pairs when adding strings of numbers. We are developing the skills of skimming and scanning to find information when reading such things as charts and posters.

2O This week we have been looking at the differences between handmade and factory made objects, and the materials used in each. In Maths we have been beginning to look at how to add 2 digit numbers, using partitioning. In English we have continued to write a range of narratives, and are beginning to use interesting words in our writing.

3B 3B has been working hard on the jump strategy and split strategy in addition and subtraction. We have also been completing some assessment in Maths. In Health, 3B has been studying individual strengths and how we can apply that to friendships.

3C As always we are busy learning in all areas of the curriculum. In week 8 we will be commencing our speaking presentations and we are all looking forward to hearing each other share.

3ZH 3ZH have been learning how to be a good friend in Health. In HASS we have been examining ways people participate in and contribute to their communities.

3H We have been persuasive writing detectives! We've been looking for persuasive language and devices in texts and learning how to use them in our own writing to give it extra "oomph!".

4W We are now reading 'Matilda', beginning to write a new chapter for 'The Twits' and investigating the significance of explorer James Cook.

4JM We have been learning about measurement, including length and time, as well as practicing our number facts and operations in Maths. Our robotics lessons have been lots of fun and we have been learning how to be cyber safe.

4B 4B are researching the life cycles and stages of endangered animals and endeavouring to become famous writers like Roald Dahl.

5H In 5H we have been using our "Chance" knowledge and applying it to an in-class investigation. The question involved: Is three player “Scissor, Paper, Rock fair?” Our groups have been hard at work finding evidence to support our answer. Our creative writing has continued, using our editing skills to make our stories even more effective and interesting! In Art and Science we have been creating lively bugs using our names, these are now on display in our classroom.

5J 5J have just finished creating some pretty interesting creatures in Science! We've used our knowledge of 'animal and plant adaptations' to create brand new creatures with our iPads for different environments. If you walk past our classroom you may also see some 'bugs' hanging up - our name bugs!

5C In Maths, we have been investigating whether a 3 player game of Rock Paper

Scissors is fair. In Science we are creating PowerPoint presentations to demonstrate

our knowledge about animal adaptations that aid survival in extreme environments.

5/6S In Maths we investigated platonic solids, created our own nets for shapes, explored the cross sections of play dough shapes and constructed 3D shapes using spaghetti and marshmallows. We even had to eat the marshmallows when we finished. Maths is such hard work!!

6AD This week the students started learning new maths concepts focusing on timetables and 24 hour time, continued reading and writing narratives, completed experiments on oxidation and analysed environmental diversity within Asia…plus lots more!!!

6D We have been applying our knowledge of a 'scientific fair test' in our solubility investigations. In Mathematics we are interpreting timetables for a bus or train and we are continuing to model short story writing techniques in preparation for our assessment in English.

6M The class are participating in group discussions and developing anti-bullying messages as they prepare for the "National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence" (NDA) on Friday the 16th of March. In the English unit, they are preparing to write their own short stories which engage the reader by building tension and resolving conflict.

The NDIS is rolling out across

Queensland

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the

new way of providing individualised

support for people with disability in Australia. The NDIS is

progressively rolling out across

Queensland and by 2020 it will be fully implemented. It is

estimated the NDIS will improve

the lives of 91,000 Queenslanders with disability, their

families and carers.

The NDIS will provide all eligible Australians, under age 65,

who have a permanent and

significant disability, with the reasonable and necessary

supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life.

Rollout of the NDIS - The NDIS is being introduced by

region in Queensland. This means that in some parts of the state

the NDIS is already available, while in others it has yet to begin.

If you are currently receiving support through the Queensland

Government (for example you are a state disability client) you will

move to the NDIS as it becomes available in your region.

Your existing supports will continue until you are covered by the

NDIS.

From 1 July 2018 the NDIS will become available in the following

regions in Queensland:

Brisbane;

Logan and Redlands;

Fraser Coast, North Burnett, South Burnett and Cherbourg;

Gold Coast and Hinterland; and

Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Tablelands, Croydon, Etheridge, Cape

and Torres Strait Islanders

Becoming an NDIS participant - To become an NDIS participant

a person must:

have a permanent disability significantly affecting their ability to

take part in everyday activities;

be aged less than 65 when they first enter the NDIS;

be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a Protected

Special Category visa; and

live in Australia where the NDIS is available.

Participants can apply to enter the NDIS up to six months prior to

the Scheme rolling out in

their region by contacting the NDIS on 1800 800 110. If you are

already receiving disability

supports through the Queensland Government, the National

Disability Insurance Agency

(NDIA) will have your contact details, and will be in touch with you.

Access to the NDIS and readiness - The NDIA is working with

Early Childhood Early

Intervention (ECEI) and Local Area Coordinator (LAC) partners to

deliver the NDIS in local communities across Australia.

ECEI and LAC partners help participants navigate the NDIS and

connect them with other community services, where appropriate.

ECEI and LAC partners in the areas rolling out in 2018 are

expected to be announced prior to the start of the Scheme.

Supporting documentation - If you or your family member

has never used a Queensland

Government service, or if the NDIA asks for additional

information, you may need to seek

the services of your General Practitioner and/or other health

professionals, to provide the

necessary evidence to support your NDIS access request.

This may involve:

completing the Supporting Evidence section of the NDIS

Access Request Form;

Documenting that the person has or is likely to have

permanent disability;

and providing copies of reports or assessments relevant

to the diagnosis, outlining the extent of the functional

impact of the disability.

Further information - Events to help you understand the

NDIS are scheduled across the region. You can view these
