CCEURO as Codex Region

CCEURO is the most numerous region in Codex Alimentarius Commission: 50 member countries and European Union as the member organization

28 EU member states = members of Codex

European Region comprises of so many countries in which there are a lot of diversity as concerns: food products, traditions, habits of eating, level of food safety and risk In European Region we take care more and more about food safety and quality and we need Codex standards as food for our life

Polish-Swiss co-operation in cceuro

Before and during our coordination we were always supported by Switzerland`s experience and Mrs Awilo Ochien Pernet, v-ce Chairperson of CAC

Polish-Swiss co-operation begun with the organization of Regional Workshop on the Codex Alimentarius in Warsaw Poland on 1st - 3rd October 2007, since then our relations have been tightening in a very friendly atmosphere.

Activities of Poland before the terms of the Regional Coordinator

FAO/WHO Regional Workshop on the Codex Alimentarius Warsaw Poland1st - 3rd October 2007

• The Workshop was organized by the Governments of Switzerland and Poland

• Workshop was attended by 42 delegates from over 20 counties

• Significant financial support was provided through the FAO/WHO Trust Fund

• The general purpose of the Workshop was to involve less active countries of the European region in Codex works

• Lectures, presentations and poster session were provided during the Workshop

Before 26th cceuro session FAO/WHO Regional Workshop on the Codex Alimentarius Warsaw Poland 6tH October 2008

• The Workshop was organized in collaboration with the Governments of Switzerland and Poland.

• The Workshop was attended by 44 delegates representing 14 countries and 1 member organisation

• 15 participants received support from the FAO/WHO Trust Fund.

• The objective of the Workshop was to provide information on the purpose and priority procedures of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and to orientate delegates for the forthcoming the 26th Session of CCEURO.

NOMINATION POLAND FOR FAO/WHO REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR EUROPE

• During the 26th CCEURO Session in Warsaw, representatives of Switzerland, proposed the Polish candidature for Regional Coordinator for Europe. The proposal was unanimously accepted by all delegates attending the session.

• At the 32nd Session of CAC (July, 2009), Poland was officially appointed as the new FAO/WHO Coordinator for Europe.

27th Session of the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Europe• The FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Europe held

its 27th Session in Warsaw, Poland, from 5 to 8 October 2010 at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Poland.

• The Session was attended by 80 delegates representing 32 member countries, one member organisation, one observer country and 4 international organizations.

its 28th Session in Batumi, Georgia, from 25 – 28 September 2012 at the kind invitation of the Government of Georgia and the Government of the Republic of Poland.

• The Session was attended by 94 delegates representing 40 member countries, one member organisation, 2 observer countries and 2 international organizations.

CCEURO – achievements and challenges

• Under auspices of the Coordinator for Europe with financial support from FAO/WHO Codex Trust Fund Codex, EU and European countries, a series of Codex workshops/projects with a significant participation of the European Region Members were organized. Total number of Workshops/Seminars/Training courses for

European Region in the period 2008-2012 - 46 events Projects/Direct Assistance to European Countries 2008-2012 –

more than 16 tasks European Union helped in capacity building in the frame of

BTSF based on Codex standards with the participation FAO/WHO and Codex Secretariat

• Some countries from European Region supported/helped succesfully FAO/WHO projects or trainings for European Region: Norway, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Lituania, and Poland

• CCEURO Members contribute to CTF 73,5% of the total budget

CCEURO – achievements and challenges• After multi year gap CCEURO has

undertaken new works on regional standards.

• We have successfully revised The Regional Standard for Chanterelle. The Committee agreed to advance the Proposed Draft Revised Regional Standard for Chantarelles to Step 5/8 for adoption by the 36th Session of the Commission - July 2013

• The Committee also progressed the discussion on the new Regional Standard for Ayran, which will be continued in the nearest future.

CCEURO – challenges and achievements• to focus on enhancing

communication both between Member Countries within the region and with other Codex regional committees.

• to consider developing a Codex strategic plan for Europe, since such documents for other regions exist.

• to encourage new CCEURO Members to be more active in the frame of Codex work

• to continue capacity building activities in the region

New Codex Coordinator for Europe

During the 28th CCEURO session (Batumi, Georgia, September 2012), the Committee unanimously supported the proposal of the delegation of Poland to nominate The Netherlands as the next Coordinator for European Region.

The Netherlands as the next Coordinator has been appointed the 36th Session of the Commission.
