What is a movie Poster?

A Movie Poster is used to promote and advertise a film, film posters are distributed internationally and therefore vary in size and content depending on the international market.

Film posters can be displayed inside and on the outside of cinemas as well as on transport, the streets or in shops The same images appear in the film exhibitor's pressbook and may also be used on websites, DVD (and historically VHS) packaging, flyers, advertisements in newspapers and magazines, etc.

A teaser poster or advance poster is an early promotional film poster, containing a basic image or design without revealing too much information such as the plot, theme, and characters. The purpose is to incite awareness and generate a general hype for the film. A tagline may be included, There are some instances when teaser posters are issued long in advance before the film goes into production, although they are issued during the film development.

From the colour scheme, font and main image we should be able to depict what the film is about.

The Lovely BonesWe see the face of the main character who has been cast into purgatory. Below her face we see a tree where the blossoms that are swiftly blowing off its branches and into the protagonists face connoting purity and innocence, purgatory is in fact portrayed in a positive light and the fact that there is another girl means that she is not alone.   Along with this particular mise-en -scene we see the light pinks and peaches that fill the sky creating a perfect sunset and a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

This is a supernatural drama that unfolds the tragic story of a young girl who lost her life after being raped by a paedophile. Instead of going to heaven she is in purgatory

When we first look at this movie poster we see dark colours such as dim blues and black. All of these colours are stereotypically associated with the thriller genre. These dark colours connote a dramatic, eery and mysterious atmosphere.

This film is a mystery action thriller, it is about a manWho has had his identity stolen and is willing to fight In order to take back his life.

The thick bold font with the pale colourssuggest that this is an action thriller.

Codes and Conventionsof my Movie Poster.

My Protoganist and Villian will both feature in my movie poster, both shots will be Close Ups of the characters to enhance their facial expressions.

The title of my film will be placed directly under the main image with a tagline placed above it.

Along the top of the movie poster I will have my four actors listed, I have seen this convention used in the movie poster for “The Lovely Bones”

The Colour Scheme will consist of dark colours because they connote drama and also correspond with the thriller genre.
