How about starting your mornings at Café Bonaparte for some gourmet coffee, lunch at Doc's Beach House which is a landmark in Bonita Springs and then an afternoon stroll through Coconut Point Mall doing some window shopping and people watching? To top off a "picture- perfect" day, enjoy a fine dinner at one of the outstanding restaurants the greater Coconut Point area has to offer, such as Ruth's Chris Steak House, Blue Water Bistro or Ristorante Farfalla, on any day at any time of the year. If you already live in this tropical paradise, you know the answer. But as homebuyers scout the stretches of Florida for their next home, vacation rental or investment property; it's time to let them in on the secret of why we call this beach paradise "Home"! Industry experts are all saying the same thing… Homebuyers in Southwest Florida have never had so much selection in choice or price when it comes to real estate. But when a homebuyer is looking to make a purchase, their reasons for buying where they do stretch far beyond the four walls of the home, and often depend more on what each city has to offer. When visitors first come to our area, it's our beaches that are usually one of the first things they notice. Vanderbilt Beach has long topped the list for locals with it's "see-and-be- seen" reputation. Our outdoor living trumps the competition with such angler favorites as Chokoloskee Island and the Naples Pier. The serious buyer and serious angler will find these areas hard to pass up. But to really stand out, we need to go beyond the beach. Florida remains one of the top relocation destinations, and as the housing market continues to make a slow rebound, cities within the Sunshine State are finding themselves in competition with each other. That's where things such as the exquisite dining of the Gulf Coast makes its mark with such culinary cuisine as Truluck's, waterfront hot-spot USS Nemo, and a true Southwest Florida one-and-only, Shane's Cabana Bar at Bayfront. The Gulf-Coast is also rapidly establishing itself as an artist's retreat, making it marketable to the elite of all things expressive. From Opera to the Philharmonic Orchestra to the Florida Repertory Theatre, those seeking a culture outside the "surf and sand" are taking note and taking notice! Speaking of taking notice, the travel industry recently released their quarterly numbers for air travel in September, and Delta came in at the top spot with more than 73,000 people flying into Southwest Florida International Airport. The travel hub served more than 76 million passengers last year and remains one of the top 50 busiest airports in the nation! It's these things that realtors and industry experts say will mean the difference between a home for sale and a home sold. You already know all this. In 2008, commit to afinancial plan...

If you've ever fantasizedabout quitting your job andstarting a business, you'recertainly not alone. But it'sdefinitely not something to do ona whim.

A business startup requiresparallel planning in advance foryour business and personalfinances. That's because businessowners - even those who areacquiring ongoing businesses orstarting their own companies onthe cheap - quickly find theirbusiness and personal financesare inextricably linked. Soinstead of saying you're going tostart a business in 2008, committo making a solid financial planfor that business in 2008 for alaunch later on.

Here are some basic stepsto consider right now:

Start with advice: You neednot one, but two sets of financialadvice when starting a business. The first involves the viability ofyour business concept. Youshould understand your businessidea inside and out before youlaunch and what your newcompany's immediate and long-term cash needs will be. Thesecond set of advice involvesyour own finances and howprepared you are for what will

surely be a major lifestyletransition. Because new businessowners frequently underestimatetheir new business's expensesstarting out, they can findthemselves funding thosebusiness needs out-of-pocket.That means less money for day-to-day living expenses as well aslong-term planning forretirement. That's why it'scritical to consult a tax andfinancial expert such as aCertified Financial Planner™professional at the outset.

Focus on your debts first:With the possible exception ofmortgage debt, there's very little"good debt" in the life of abusinessperson. So while you'reresearching your businessconcept and putting togetheryour own financial plan, startcutting back and erasing asmuch credit card and adjustable-rate debt from your life aspossible. While you might findthat plenty of people might wantto lend you money as a newbusiness owner, remember thatyou'll have the most flexibilityin your business - and your life -- when you owe as little aspossible.

Start thinking about yourlegal business structure: Yourpersonal financial situation andthe kind of business you'restarting should determine thelegal designation of yourcompany.

Before choosing a businessstructure, such as a soleproprietorship, S or Ccorporation, partnership,

Limited Liability Partnership(LLP), or Limited LiabilityCompany (LLC), owners shouldreflect on their business in thecontext of their overall financiallife and ask themselves a seriesof questions:• Is the business going to be

your primary source ofpersonal wealth and daily cashflow, or is it a side business?

• Do you expect the business topay for your retirement?

• Do you want it to provideother financial benefits?

• Do you want to pass it on tofamily members or sell it toexisting employees or outsidebuyers?

The answers to thesequestions figure importantly intothe decision, along with otherkey factors such as what type ofbusiness it is, its risk factors, current tax laws, and regulationssuch as workman'scompensation.

Get your emergency fund inshape: While it's wise foreveryone to have 3-6 months ofcash set aside for basic livingexpenses in case they lose theirjob or face a medicalemergency, emergency fundsare particularly necessary fornew business owners. Startupscan be particularly expensive, and most businesses are notprofitable from day one. Betteryet, plan an emergency fund notonly for yourself, but for thebusiness as well.

Plan your healthcare andother basic benefits: Automaticbenefits are the plus side of

working for someone else. When you're working foryourself, you become your ownHR department and chances areyou won't be able to match yourold employer's buying power. Ifyou support a family with thesebenefits or if you have particularhealth concerns, you need toprice the out-of-pocket costs ofsuch benefits before startingyour own company - dependingon the business and the cost ofthose benefits, you might wantto rethink your plans.

Price disability coveragenow: You might have short-termdisability coverage as part ofyour current employee benefits, but that will likely end once youquit your job. You should pricelong-term disability coveragebased on your present workingsalary so you can qualify for thehighest possible benefit.Disability coverage is critical forself-employed people sincethey're their own supportsystem.

(CL) — Despite headline-grabbing figures and furtherforays by government officialsinto helping homeowners, foreclosure statistics are beingwidely criticized as inaccurate. The criticism rests largely withIrvine, California-based RealtyTrac, one of the major suppliersof foreclosure statisticsthroughout the country. Simplyput, many across the country arequestioning the validity of thecompany’s figures, saying thenumbers are inflated becausemany of the foreclosures thecompany reports are haltedwhen homeowners resolve theirdebt. Inaccuracies in Colorado,

for example, where RealtyTrac reported more than54,000 foreclosures in2006, were criticized bythe state’s Division ofHousing, which reportedthe actual number offoreclosures to be less than29,000. The crux of theproblem appears to beRealty Trac reportinghomes that have gone intothe process of foreclosureas actual foreclosures, when in reality, manyhomeowners that go intoforeclosure eventuallyresolve their debt andavoid losing their homes.

(ARA) - Designer ChristianDior once said, "Without hats wewould have no civilization."With winter upon us, there is nobetter time to express yourunique style while staying warmunder the latest, trendy hats ofthe season.

"Clothing is a uniqueexpression of self and hatsdefinitely get noticed," saysSusan Lee, hat designer with theVillage Hat Shop. "Hats standout and you can easily changethe entire look of an outfitsimply by changing your hat. There is no better time thanwinter to start experimentingwith hats."

Lee offers a heads up aboutthis winter's hat trends.

Start With the BasicsBerets are hot. High-qualityberets are versatile, well madeand can be worn all year long. They can be worn in a more

t r a d i t i o n a l"French" style orpulled back to fiton the crown ofthe head for amore modernlook. Traditionalberets are madewith wool, butthe look of aberet can bechanged entirelywhen made fromchunky yarns,Angora or evenvelvet.

Get ArtsyKnit and crochethats providewarmth with an artisan feel. Apopular celebrity accessory oflate, the crochet "slouch" hat isan artsy way to hide a bad hairday. Whether the entire hat iscrochet or features crochetaccessories, a handmade look

enhances any outfit.

Indiana Who?For decades handsome menhave sported classic fedoras, butthey look great on daring womentoo. With a brim to tilt and a

g r o s g r a i nribbon to dressit up, a fedoracan make awoman lookmysterious likeM a r l e n eDietrich andmake a manlook (and feel)like IndianaJones or FrankSinatra. Afedora is also agreat winter hatas the brimhelps keep rain, sleet and snowoff the face.

A Soft, French BellMaking a big comeback is thecloche--the French word for belland a soft style inspired by hatsof the 1920s. This feminine hatcan be dressed down in fleece orfelt or even dressed up in silk to

complement an elegant cocktaildress. Plain or embellished withsequins, feathers or flowers, acloche adds romance andelegance to every look.

If you're worried yourtrendy new hat will leave youwith flat hat hair, don't. If you'rewearing the hat for less than afew hours, take off the hat andadd a styling product to reshapeyour hair. "If you're wearing thehat for longer than a few hours,"says Lee, "just find one that's toogood to take off then you don'thave to worry about hat hair."

(ARA) - Winter brings with itfrosty nights, sparkling snow, crisp air, crackling fires … anddreaded hat hair. The bitterweather can make it difficult tohave good hair days, but thereare ways to keep hair strong, healthy and shiny even if it isstuffed under your ski hat.

"You need to pay extraattention to your hair in thewinter even more than othertimes of the year," says BrianMagallones, celebrity stylist forGarnier Fructis. "The dry air andharsh weather can strip strandsof moisture leaving them dulland straw-like."

Magallones shares thefollowing tips for keeping hair

fabulous and healthy all winterlong.

• Schedule a trim every six toeight weeks. Snipping awaybrittle and split ends is aninstant hair makeover.

• Shampoo every other daywith a moisture-rich

product and condition yourhair every time youshampoo. "Preferably, use aconditioner that containsstrengthening vitamins likeGarnier Fructis MoistureWorks," says Magallones."This will protect hair fromdamage caused by hot stylingtools -- hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons --

used often this season forspecial occasions like holidayparties."

• Be sure to use the lowestheat setting on the hairdryer and take warm, nothot, showers to avoid overdrying hair. Do still dry yourhair, though. Going outsidewith a wet head can cause hairto freeze and break.

• Cold temperatures andwarm hats can causeflyaways. A shot of a static-preventing spray or a lightsweep with a fabric softenersheet can stop static frommaking your hair stand onend.

• If you're wearing a hat, fixhair by adding texturizingpaste or freshening spray torestyle and shape hair.

• Use a room humidifier toadd moisture to the air anddrink lots of water. Beinghydrated on the inside canmake your hair and skin lookhydrated on the outside.

• Get highlights. Winter hair isexposed to less sun and can bedarker and duller than insummer. They also brightenup any complexion.

Healthy winter hair maytake a bit of extra work, but witha little added moisture andvitamin fortified shampoos andconditioners you can turn nasty, weak and dry strands into strongand beautiful locks that willshine all winter long.

Every now and then I hear a story thatis so great I just have to pass it on to thepeople I care about. Here it is:

Charles Plumb was a U.S. Navy jetpilot in Vietnam. After 75 combatmissions his plane was destroyed by asurface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected andparachuted into enemy hands. He wascaptured and spent six years in acommunist Vietnamese prison. Hesurvived the ordeal and now lectures onlessons learned from that experience.

One day, when Plumb and his wifewere sitting in a restaurant, a man atanother table came up and said, "You'rePlumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnamfrom the aircraft carrier Kitty Haw. Youwere shot down!"“How in the world did you know that”?asked Plumb.

“I packed your parachute” the manreplied. Plumb gasped in surprise andgratitude.

The man pumped his hand and said, "Iguess it worked!" Plumb assured him, "itsure did. If your chute hadn't worked, Iwouldn't be here today."

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "Ikept wondering what he might havelooked like in a Navy uniform: a whitehat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottomtrousers. I wonder how many times Imight have seen him and not even said,'Good morning, how are you?' or anythingbecause, you see, I was a fighter pilot andhe was just a sailor."

Plumb thought of the many hours thesailor had spent at a long wooden table inthe bowels of the ship, carefully weavingthe shrouds and folding the silks of eachchute, holding in his hands each time thefate of someone he didn't know.

(NUI) - In today's conservation-savvy world, the term "green"has taken on a whole newmeaning that stretches farbeyond a mere color. Frompopular television programs toworld leaders, many publicfigures have taken the initiativeto tell others to help improve theenvironment. So how can youtake your first step toward goinggreen? Quite simply, it starts inyour home.

Lowering your home'senergy consumption not onlysaves you money every monthand helps aid the environment italso increases the value of yourhome. A Maine EnergyEfficiency BuildingPerformance Standards studyconcluded that home valuesincrease by $20 per dollarreduced in annual utility costs.

As more North Americanresidents seek to build a betterfuture for their families andmake the world greener, provenEuropean hydronic heatingtechnology is emerging as areasonable home applianceinvestment. Italian-made Baxiwall-hung boilers, for instance, enable homeowners to save fuel, money, space and theenvironment, while increasingthe resale value of their homes.

A 2007 field test in southernOntario produced fuelconsumption and gas bill savingsof up to 59 percent a monthcompared to the previous year. The test involved installing anatural gas-fired Baxi Lunacombination heating andtankless hot water boiler, together with a hydronic air

handler, in a 1,900 square-foothome. Other highlights of thefield test included:• Family members found

hydronic heating to be muchmore comfortable than theirprevious forced-air furnacesystem.

• The boiler's endless hot-water-on-demand functioneliminated arguments aboutrunning out of hot waterduring morning showers.

• Homeowners expected to saveup to $1,000 a year byreducing natural gas use by530 therms.

• Fuel consumption savingswere equal to greenhouse gasemissions of 2.6 metric tons ofcarbon dioxide. Studies showit would take parking a car formore than six years, orplanting an acre of trees toproduce the same positiveenvironmental impact.

Baxi wall-hung boilers areEnergy Star rated and certifiedby the American Society ofMechanical Engineers. Installedonly by qualified heating andplumbing contractors, they canachieve energy efficienciesranging from 86 to 98 percentrespectively. For furtherinformation, visit www.wallhungboilers.com.

Boiler Technology Proven to be 'Green' and to Cut Costs

Go Green and Save Green with aHigh-Efficiency Water Heater

(NUI) - As energycosts rise, the "green"movement andconservation effortshave become populartopics. Energy-savingr e c o m m e n d a t i o n sappear daily in themedia, and consumersare being offeredsubsidies or state andfederal tax credits toencourage the purchaseof more efficientappliances. However, many homeowners fail toconsider their water heaterwhen it comes to going "green."

Although today's waterheaters are expected to operatefor an average of 13 years, theU.S. Department of Energyrecommends shopping for anew water heater if your currentunit is more than seven yearsold. This allows an adequateamount of time for homeownersto research and select a waterheater that best meets theirneeds instead of waiting untiltheir heater breaks down andselecting the cheapest quick fixfor cold showers.

Consumers are increasinglyturning to high-efficiency water

heaters when replacing olderunits or during remodeling andbuilding projects. While thesemodels may cost more initially, savings in water and energyusage continue throughout thelifetime of the appliance, offsetting the price difference. The U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency reports thatthese units use 10 to 50 percentless energy, benefits to bothyour budget and theenvironment.

A recent study by the GasTechnology Institute simulatedthe residential performance ofhigh-efficiency water heatersand conventional units. TheVertex from A. O. Smith, a

hybrid, gas condensing, residential unitincorporating tank-typeand tankless technology, provided the best overallperformance at averageand high-volume hotwater usage, which is theconsumption of 64 gallonsor more per day of hotwater.

Endorsed by long timeenvironmental championEd Begley Jr. of theHGTV series "Living

With Ed," the Vertex providessufficient quantities of hot waterfor shower after shower andoperates at 90 percent thermalefficiency. Additionally, it isdesigned to meet the demandsthat modern lifestyles require.

"Using more efficientcombustion to produce hotwater at lower operating costsand 90 percent thermalefficiency, the Vertex is a goodchoice for customers who wantto save energy withoutskimping on hot water," saidDavid Chisolm, A. O. SmithWater Heater brand manager.

(NUI) - With the averagehome's energy bill higher thanever before, many peoplesimply turn up the heat withouteyeing the potential culprit -your windows. In manybuildings and homes across thecountry, the windows providelittle to no insulation from theoutside world, leading to asurprising amount of heat loss.As much as one quarter of theaverage heating bill is often aresult of poorly constructed orinsulated windows.

If you have windows thatare drafty and cold, thefollowing tips will help youspruce up your windows, keepout the cold and save moneyon your monthly energy bill:

• Install high-efficiencywindows. Many newerwindows on the marketcontain a variety oft e c h n o l o g i c a lbreakthroughs, such as highperformance glass andcoatings, which offer morethan three times theinsulating power of older, single pane windowswhich are currently foundin 50 percent of all U.S.

homes. • Caulk around existing

windows. Sealing windowframes with caulk will helpkeep out moisture andstubborn drafts. To see ifyour existing caulk linesneed to be replaced, stickyour fingernail into thecaulk. If it is soft, the caulkis still functional. If it'shard or brittle, replace witha fresh application.

• Storm windows. Thisalternative to increasingyour energy efficiency isrelatively inexpensive andcan improve a window'sinsulating power by up to50 percent. In thesummertime, stormwindows may need to beremoved to ensure adequateventilation in your home.

• Cellular shades. You maythink replacing yourwindows is the only realoption to save energy, butsimply adding insulating, cellular window shades canmore than triple theinsulating power of yourexisting windows.Additionally, side trackwindow shades provide

even better insulation bytightening up the sides ofthe shade, creating a moreefficient dead air space andinsulating layer. Visitwww.CellularWindowShades.com for moreinformation.

• Shutters. Not only doshutters have great curbappeal and add resale valueto your home, they are alsogreat insulators. Whileinstalling exterior shuttersis best, interior woodshutters also provide ameasurable difference andadd an elegant, traditionaltouch to fine furniture inyour home.

MAKE A HEALTHY NEWYEAR'S RESOLUTION FOR

YOUR PET(ARA) - A researcher at theUniversity of Hertfordshire,England, has proven that pets andtheir owners often look, think andact alike. Unfortunately, that's notalways a good thing; pets andhumans can have similar weightproblems.

It's estimated that between25 and 40 percent of dogs andcats and 31 percent of people inthis country are overweight. Theproblem is even worse for pethorses; a recent study at theVirginia-Maryland RegionalCollege of Veterinary Medicineand Virginia Tech found roughlyhalf were overweight.

What's the solution? Addyour pets to your own weight-lossresolutions for 2008. Having acompanion will help you loseweight and improve your pet'shealth. Studies have shown thatpeople who exercise with friendsare far more likely to keep up aworkout regimen and that peoplediet more effectively with friends.Exercising with a four-leggedfriend results in a healthier petowner, and can even help ahuman recover from surgerymore quickly.

"What many of us assumedwas true for decades has nowbeen proven -- taking a dog for awalk is healthy for both the dogand the dog's owner," says Dr.Roger K. Mahr, past president ofthe American Veterinary MedicalAssociation (AVMA), who hasspoken out on the importantlinkages between animal andhuman health. "Many pet ownersare probably more concernedabout exercising their pets thanthey are about getting someexercise for their own health, butboth will live a healthier life as aresult. Pets don't just improveyour quality of life; they alsoimprove your health."

Just like humans, overweightdogs and cats are more likely toget a number of diseases andhealth problems, includingdiabetes, heart disease, skinconditions, liver disease, and jointproblems. So putting yourself,Fido, Fluffy, and/or Flicka on adiet and exercise regiment willresult in a better new year foreveryone.

Here are some AVMA petweight-loss tips:• A visit to your veterinarian is

the best way to determine ifyour pet is overweight, butthere are a couple commonsense guidelines. A dog shouldhave a discernible waistwithout fat deposits, and ribsshould be easy to feel whilestroking a dog. In cats, if thereis any rounding of the abdomenor bulging in the back, limbs, neck or face, you've got a fat cat.

• Carefully measure the food yougive your pets and feed them at

least twice a day. If the pethasn't finished their food inabout 20 minutes, take the bowlaway to discourage overeating.Dogs and cats fed once a day,or continuously, tend to be thefattest.

• Monitor the number and size ofthe treats you give in praise. Alarge dog treat can be over 100calories, while a small treat hasas little as 10 calories. If youcan't help but treat yourbeloved pet, break them in halfto cut the calories.

• Diet pet foods are available butmust meet certain standards toqualify for that designation. Forinstance, "low-calorie" dogfood must be no more than 310calories per cup for dry food or90 calories per 1/2 cup wet, and"low-fat" or "lean" must be nomore than 9 percent fat in dryfood and 4 percent fat wet.

• High-fiber pet foods can help apet's diet by making your bestfriend feel full with fewercalories. No-salt, canned stringbeans can be added to eitherdry or wet food to provide bulkand fiber with very fewcalories.

• The more exercise the better …research has shown that dogsare 10 percent less likely to beobese for each hour of exercisethey got every day.

• To exercise a cat, engage themwith a feather, string or laserpointer, and try to get themrunning after a toy as they swatat it. To exercise a dog, consider agility training, playtime with other dogs, andchasing a ball or Frisbee. Thereis no better exercise for dogs, horses and humans than a briskwalk.

• Hypothyroidism is a commoncause of obesity in humans, dogs and cats, but it's mucheasier to diagnose in humans. Ifyour dog or cat is obese withouta clear cause, make a veterinaryappointment.

• Finally, if your pet is a little onthe pudgy side, and you think itmight benefit from anincreased exercise regiment, see a veterinarian first. Noexercise program should beginwithout a veterinary checkup. If your pet is more than 20percent overweight, consultyour veterinarian immediately.

(ARA) – From floor plans tonew furnishings, homeremodeling comes with endlesschoices and possibilities.Whether it’s a small project or amajor addition, one importantelement to keep in mind as ahomeowner makes thosechoices is green design.

To make it easier toincorporate green elements inrenovation projects, theAmerican Society of InteriorDesigners (ASID) Foundationpartnered with the U.S. GreenBuilding Council (USGBC) toproduce green remodelingguidelines for the homeowner, builder, designer andconstruction professional.

Green design not onlyreduces the impact on theenvironment and savesresources, it promotes a healthylifestyle free of toxic materials

and allergies. Theincreasing availability ofnew technology andinnovative products ismaking it easier toachieve a healthy, safeand efficient home. Infact, anyone can

implement aspects ofgreen design. It can be assimple as purchasing bulk-product dispensers or asextensive as installing atankless water heater for theentire home. Here are a fewideas for the homeowner thatchooses to go green: • Appliances: Choose high-

efficiency water heaters, low-flow toilets and showerheads, faucet aerators, and energy-and water-efficientappliances. Consider usingbulk-product dispensers forbody-care products.

• Flooring: Reuse existingflooring and subflooringwhen possible and look atflooring made from natural orrapidly renewable materialsfor new floors. Refinishwood floors using safeprocesses and with greenerand safer materials. Avoidcarpeting in high moisture

areas or where spills couldoccur. Consider removablearea rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting

• Lighting: Make smart use ofnatural light and supplementit with efficient electriclighting like compactfluorescent bulbs.

• Paints: Use low- or zero-VOC (volatile organiccompound) paints, finishes, adhesives, grouts, caulking, and sealants.

• Furnishings: Choosecabinetry and otherfurnishings made fromrecycled or reclaimedmaterials or wood certifiedby the Forest StewardshipCouncil. There are a numberof products on the market, including countertops, tables, chairs and flooring, madefrom a wide range ofrecycled and reclaimedmaterials. Select compactfurniture that incorporatesstorage and consider reused, salvaged or antique furniture.

• Water Use: Set water heatertemperatures no higher thannecessary and conserve water

• Safety: Install smoke andcarbon monoxide alarms.

Footprint(NUI) - It's routine for many onan average workday climb out ofbed, hop in a car and brave theslow-moving traffic to workwithout thinking twice. Butnixing the drive, and opting forpublic transportation instead, canbe a benefit to the environment.

A carbon footprint is thetotal amount of carbon dioxideand other greenhouse gasesemitted throughout the full lifecycle of a person, product orservice. According to a studyreleased by the American PublicTransportation Association(APTA), when compared to otherhousehold actions to limit carbondioxide, taking publictransportation can be more than10 times greater in reducingharmful greenhouse gases.

"Public transportation useshould be at the top of the list ofways for households to becomegreener," said William W. Millar, president of APTA. "Switchingto public transit gives a personthe opportunity to immediatelybecome part of the solution tohelp reduce carbon dioxide, aharmful greenhouse gas."

And while it is veryimportant to increase greenefforts within the home, manyindoor changes do not reducecarbon dioxide levels at the ratethat using public transportationcan. A solo commuter switchingto public transportation canreduce their daily carbon dioxideemissions by 20 pounds, whichcan lessen a household's carbonfootprint up to 10 percentannually.

Replacing an olderrefrigerator with a new, moreefficient model has carbonsavings of 335 pounds a year.Weatherizing a home andadjusting the thermostat forheating and cooling saves 2,847pounds a year. But switching acommute to public transportationsaves an incredible 4,800 poundsa year and is one of the mostsignificant actions a householdmember can take to immediatelyreduce their carbon footprint.

Public transportation alsoprovides benefits beyond carbondioxide reductions. In an agewhen preserving ourenvironment is a top priority, taking your foot off of the gaspedal is one way to do just that.

Turn 'Yucky' into 'Yummy' When it Comes to Medicines

(NUI) - For many parents, getting their young children totake medicine for a simple coldcan be a problem that canquickly lead to tantrums. Forparents doling out lifesavingmedicine to help their childrenfight cancer, that same struggletakes on an even greaterimportance and level of stress.

On the Web site for theNational Children's CancerSociety (N.C.C.S.), parentscoping with childhood cancerregularly come together throughmessage boards to gain hope, askfor help and vent about thecancer-related issues going on intheir lives. A frequent challengeis figuring out how to effectivelyadminister lifesaving cancermedications to children. Oneparent shared her frustrationsabout trying to coax her 4-year-old daughter to take hermedicine.

"She hates the medication

we have to give her daily," thewoman wrote on the Web site,www.NationalChildrensCancerSociety.org. "She will not swallowthe pills. Crushing them tastesawful and to give liquid is almostimpossible. Is there a trick?"

For parents looking to helptheir children overcome canceras well as parents simply tryingto ease their child's stuffy nosethe following tips will prevent abattle wrought with tears:• Offer choices. While taking

the medicine might not be anegotiable task, askingthings such as "Would youlike apple or grape juicewith your medicine?" willgive your child a sense ofcontrol that will make themmore willing to comply.

• Make the medication tastebetter. As long as you getthe "OK" from your child'sdoctor, find creative ways todisguise the taste of themedicine. For medication in

• Create a routine. Choose aspecific time and spot inyour house where your childreceives their medication. With every dose, have themput a checkmark or stickeron a medicine chart set upnear the designated area. This is an especiallyimportant tip for childrenfighting long-term illnessessuch as cancer.

(ARA) - Work and homeresponsibilities take anenormous amount of time eachday. While being “underpressure” is not healthy forpeople, it’s also very bad foryour tires.

Tires can lose 1 to 2 poundsper square inch (PSI) of pressureeach month. When tires are“under pressure” they becomemore stressed and can get hotunder the collar. Well, under therim, anyway.

Excess stress on people cancause health problems. Excessstress on tires due to lowinflation pressure can decreasefuel economy, make tires wearout faster and can affect vehiclesafety. Under-inflated tiresgenerate heat that over time cancause tire failure.

The National HighwayTraffic Safety Administrationestimates that under inflatedtires contribute to 660 fatalitiesand 33,000 injuries each year.

Unfortunately, 85 percent

of American drivers fail toproperly check tire pressure, according to a motorist surveyby the Rubber ManufacturersAssociation. On the bright side, promoting healthy tires issimple and only takes fiveminutes each month. The keyprescription: check the airpressure with a tire gauge.

Make sure that you checktires when they are cold --before driving even a mile. Thiswill ensure an accurate readingsince tire temperature increaseswhile driving and that causestire pressure to rise.

Next, use the correct tirepressure for your vehicle.Nearly 45 percent of drivers donot know where to find thecorrect tire pressure for their car.Hint: don’t look on the tire! Thepressure listed on the tiresidewall is the maximumpressure for the tire. Find a labelon the driver’s door or check theowner’s manual. Vehiclemanufacturers establish the

recommended inflationpressure.

Finally, don’t forget tocheck the spare. Seventy percentof drivers never check theinflation pressure in the sparetire. Getting a flat tire is bad

enough. A flat spare tire whenyou need it most just adds insultto injury.

(NUI) - If you're constantlystraining to hear a conversationat the office or turning up thevolume when watchingtelevision, there's a goodchance you are one of manyAmericans with a serious butcommon problem hearing loss.

Losing your hearing canoccur for a number of reasons, including frequent exposure todecibel levels that are notsafely tolerable for humanhearing. But for those whosimply lose their hearingslowly as they age a conditionknown as "presbycusis" theloss of hearing may run in thefamily and gradually preventthe sufferer from hearinghigher frequencies that arefound in everyday life.

According to the HearingLoss Association of America(HLAA), hearing loss hasbecome the nation's number-one disability. And theproblem, which affects one out

of every three people olderthan 60 and half of those over85, doesn't seem to bedwindling. In fact, the HLAAhas predicted that by the year2050, the number of hearing-impaired Americans will havesurpassed the rate at which theU.S. population is growingmaking the need for productsthat assist individuals withhearing loss much morevaluable.

There are many helpfuldevices on the market todaythat can help increase theenjoyment of activitieshindered by hearing loss. While it's a common pastimefor people of all ages, manyolder Americans are unsatisfiedwhen trying to enjoy televisiondue to muffled dialog that canmake a favorite programunwatchable. To combat thisproblem, listening devices suchas the Original DialogueSpeaker, sold exclusively by

firstSTREET, give hearing-impaired Americans an addedlistening boost when relaxingin front of the TV. Using aspecially designed internalamplifier, the OriginalDialogue Speaker heightensthe dialog level in anytelevision program or moviebeing watched. By boosting the

specific frequency associatedwith speech, the overallvolume can also be kept lowermaking life easier for others inthe room unaffected by hearingproblems. For moreinformation on the OriginalDialogue Speaker, visitwww.firststreetonline.com orcall 866-681-7107.

Fend off the FluThis Season

(NUI) - If you find yourselfcoming down with a bad case ofthe sniffles this winter, you aren'tthe only one. The Centers forDisease Control and Prevention(CDC) estimates that each year35 to 50 million Americanscontract some strain of the flu,and children miss approximately22 million days of school due tosymptoms caused by colds andthe flu. Many of these diseasesare spread from touchinginfected surfaces and then one'snose, mouth and eyes not justthrough coughing and sneezing.

This year, protect yourfamily and stay healthy withthese simple tips that will keepyou germ-free:• It's an obvious but often

overlooked step wash yourhands frequently with warmwater and soap. According toDr. Charles "Dr. Germ" Gerbaat the University of Arizona, the process of hand washingalone can reduce illness ratesby 30 to 50 percent.

• Know the limitations ofsanitizers and disinfectants. Many of these products killbacteria that lie on the surfacebut don't provide long-termprotection. Many hardsurfaces can become re-contaminated with bacteria orviruses within seconds ofbeing cleaned. Pathogens thatcause respiratory infections, particularly in children, typically survive for up tothree days on surfaces, according to a study by Dr.Gerba.

Some great products to trythis season include:• New products like Unelko's

non-toxic, biodegradable 1-Step Clean & Shield(www.unelko.com), the onlysurface care product that deep-cleans and forms an organic, protective shield on surfacesprevents the growth ofbacteria, mold and mildew. This product applies aninvisible water, soil and stainrepellent barrier that lasts fordays, providing one-stepcleaning and long-termsurface protection.

• Children's backpacks carrygerms into your home and, when thrown on the floor, those germs spread. Try eco-friendly cleaners for yourfloors. Steam-cleaningproducts like Shark's SteamMop (www.SharkSteamMop.com) turns ordinary tapwater into deep-cleaningsteam that lifts dirt out of hardsurfaces, locking it away in amicrofiber pad andoutperforming chemical padmops keeping your homeclean and toxin free. Morethan 150 chemicals found inthe average home have beenlinked to allergies, birthdefects, cancer andpsychological abnormalities, according to the ConsumerProduct Safety Commission.

JANUARY 2008YOUR NEWSPAPERPAGE 14

(ARA) - If you’re heading west this winterto hit the slopes, you may be followingmany other ski bums who will be flyingstraight over the Rocky Mountains andlanding in sunny California.

The Golden State is home to the mostpopular destinations for a growing numberof skiers this season, according to theOrbitz Insider Indez (www.orbitz.com).California boasts the two most popularspots for skiers and snowboarders for the2007/2008 season, with Lake Tahoe takingover the number one spot, and MammothLakes, Calif. checking in at number two.Online travel agency Orbitz compiles itsIndex based on future hotel and vacationpackage bookings.

Worry not Rocky Mountain High!Mountain Time still attracts a huge skicrowd, with six of the top 10 spots onOrbitz’ list: Park City, Utah; Breckenridge,Colo.; Jackson Hole, Wy.: SteamboatSprings, Colo. And Vail, Colo.;Snowmass, Colo.; Keystone, Colo.; andWinter Park, Colo.

For some, mixing passionsin a single vacation is the wayto go. The Orbitz Insiders sayan increasingly popularvacation option combines thebest of both worlds -- golf andskiing. For those planning latewinter and early spring trips, yes, there are domesticdestinations where you canreadily do this, including LakeTahoe, Calif.; Snowbird, Utahand others. For many, to be onthe slopes in the morning andthe links on the afternoon is asclose to paradise as you canget.

Although many travelershave already planned wintergetaways, it’s not too late tomake reservations. Now isprime time for booking for thespring, industry experts say. Here are some tips for thoseplanning an escape to themountains: • Book as early as possible to

find the best rates but alsocheck last-minute deals.

• Book a vacation package.

Combining air and hotel is a great wayto save on trip costs.

• Pack smart. Few can pull off a ski tripwithout checking bags, so make lifeeasy and only carry on what you needfor the flight.

• Consider lodging in neighboring towns.Staying slope side or ski-in/ski-out isoften more expensive. Lodging optionsnearby with shuttle service to themountain is a cost-saving option

Also, make a checklist of everythingyou’ll need. Ski trips require a lot ofpacking and more “take alongs” than theusual vacation. A checklist will helpensure you don’t forget anything, and saveyou from having to buy any ski essentialslast minute. Not to mention, any timespent in the shops is time taken away fromthe slopes. But if you don’t have skis totake with you on your winter adventure ordon’t want to take them with you, mostresort towns will have plenty of rentalsreadily available.
