SPEAKERSKevin McCauley, MD, is a graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine (for-merly the Medical College of Pennsylvania). He was a U.S. Naval Flight Surgeon for HMH-363 Red Lions Marine Heavy Helicopter squadron and VMFAT-101 Sharp-shooters fighter/attack training squadron. He was the Director of Le Mont Michel, a sober living/recovery management program in Sandy, Utah from 2009 - 2013, and is a co-founder of the Institute for Addiction Study. His DVD, “Pleasure Unwoven,” won the 2010 NAATP Michael Q. Ford journalism award. He is currently a graduate student in Public Health at the University of Utah. Dr. McCauley became interested in the problem of addiction after witnessing the success of the Navy’s program for treating pilots with alcohol problems. He advocates strongly for the rights of recovering persons as patients and as valued members of society.

Danielle Dick, Ph.D. is the Director and founder of the College Behavioral and Emo-tional Health Institute at VCU, which integrates research, teaching, policy and practice in meaningful and innovative ways. Danielle directs the Spit for Science project, a uni-versity-wide longitudinal genetics research project with nearly 10,000 participants that connects genotypic data to behavioral and emotional health outcomes. She has worked closely with The Wellness Resource Center to develop the link from basic research to prevention/intervention both with research initiatives and shared staff. Her back-ground in clinical psychology makes this a natural bridge. Further, her involvement across departments and institutes on both campuses (Psychology, African American studies, Human and Molecular Genetics) have led to her working closely with faculty, staff, and students across the university.

Linda Hancock, Ph.D., FNP, serves as both a clinician and Director of The Wellness Resource Center. She is an animated health educator whose specialties over the years have included all the “S’s”: sexual health, substance abuse, and stress management. She is currently the smoking cessation guru at VCU and leads a campus-wide social norms marketing campaign to reduce substance use.

Bill Maher, CIP, BRI II, CADC, ACI is a highly successful and innovative intervention-ist specializing in the Gentle, Respectful, Systemic Invitational Model, which addresses the effects of addiction on the whole family. Since 1989, Bill has provided intervention services, facilitating over 3,000 interventions nationally with a very high success rate (over 90%) for placing addicted individuals into treatment and treating the family systemically. Maher provides longer term coaching and case management services for families. Maher states, “If you only treat the addict, you’re only treating part of the disease.” Maher brings personal experience to his work - he is a person of long term recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction, and also a recovering food addict. A resident of Richmond, Virginia, Maher provides intervention, coaching and case-management services to families nationally, but primarily focuses on the Mid-Atlantic region, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and down to the Atlanta area.

Ananda Amstadter, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychi-atry. Her program of research broadly focuses on understanding factors that effect post-trauma trajectory of symptoms among individuals exposed to a variety of poten-tially traumatic events (e.g., disasters, combat exposure, interpersonal violence). Most of her research focuses on the identification of risk and resiliency factors, biologic and psychosocial in nature, for traumatic-stress related conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, and depression. Her translational pro-gram of research weds biological substrates (e.g., molecular genetics, neuro-endocrine reactivity) with behavioral outcomes (e.g., mental health phenotypes, distress toler-ance, risk taking propensity) through the use of a variety of research methodologies and through interdisciplinary collaborations. Her long-term research goals are largely focused on the identification of potentially modifiable environmental variables that confer risk for post-trauma psychopathology (in their interaction with genetic vari-ants), with the aim of translating these findings into culturally sensitive prevention and secondary intervention programs. Ananda received her PhD from Auburn University in 2008.

Andrew J. Barnes, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Health Behavior and Policy at Vir-ginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Research Associate of the VCU Massey Cancer Center, and affiliate faculty in the VCU Center for the Study of Tobacco Products. Dr. Barnes is currently working with a team of researchers on the effects of federal and state regulations on e-cigarette use, how preferences impact decision-making in cancer, and several projects related to health insurance decision-making. Dr. Barnes is the co-author of the book Healthcare Systems in Transition: United States of America and co-editor of the upcoming book Behavioral Economics and Health Behaviors: Key Concepts and Current Research. He completed his doctoral training in Health Policy with a concentration in Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles and holds a Master of Public Health from Tulane University.

Caroline Cobb, Ph.D., received her PhD in Psychology from VCU in 2012. Her program of research generally addresses the role of novel and alternative tobacco products (e.g., hookah/waterpipe tobacco, little cigars/cigarillos, and electronic cigarettes) in the incidence of tobacco-related disease and death as well as the broader implications of the availability of these products for policy and public health. Her approach includes use of clinical laboratory methodology, population-based surveys, qualitative inquiry, and tools from tobacco regulatory science. Her current work is particularly focused on poly-tobacco use patterns such as the influence of concurrent use of electronic cigarettes or little cigars/cigarillos on conventional cigarette smoking behavior and relevant toxicant exposures.

Christopher C. Wagner, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology and Psychiatry, department Vice-Chair, and licensed clinical psychologist. His scholarship focuses on motivational interviewing (MI) and interpersonal processes in mental health/substance abuse treatment. He has focused on expanding MI theory and practice to a broader focus than originally conceived as well as developing MI group psychotherapy. He is the lead author on the MI in Groups book that is part of the official Guilford Press series on MI. His practice and training has included outpa-tient, inpatient and residential treatment of individuals and groups with a variety of health, mental health and addiction problems.

John is deeply interested in encouraging life giving relationships possible through recovery.

Vicki Mollenauer grew up in Los Angeles California and moved to Vienna, Virginia when she was eight. She graduated from Randolph-Macon College Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in English and with a Virginia Teaching Certification and made her home in the Richmond area. Vicki worked as a Hanover County High School teacher for six years, receiving Teacher of the Year in her third year. She was Program Manager and then became the Assistant Director of the Virginia Fire and Police Museum in 1999. She then opened a construction company in 2003, ran the business successfully for 6 years and completely renovated her Historic Jackson Ward home from shell to showplace.
