PHENOLIC RESINS DETAILS
13Coating Industries Page |
Resoles are meltable, solvable phenoplastics who contain reactive methylol groups which aremaintained by alkaline condensation of phenolics with formaldehyde. Benzene rings are linked bymethylene and ether bridges. Because of the methylol groups they are different to the same eductswho are build up under acid condensation (Novolaken), and be crosslinkable by themself withlimited storage stbility. To improve the storage stability often the methylole groups are etherified, mainly with butanole. So the solubility in non polar solvents are improved too. These Resolether areused to produce coating resins. By etherification of the phenolic hydroxy groups the solubility will be improved, paralell to alkaline- and yellowing resistance. To start the hardening process ofetherifyed resoles acid katalysts and high temperatures are necessary (stoving enamel).
Novolake are phenplic resins with a formaldehyde-phenole ratio below 1:1who are produced byacid condensation. Novolake are thermoplasic and crosslinkable by adding of formaldehyde donatorlike Hexamethylentetramin. So unmeltable phenoplastics are maintained.

HYDROCARBON RESINS
CLEARTACK*
WINGTACK
The Cleartack W series are colorless pure-monomer resins. They are used in coatings, adhesives**, construction mastics and specialty applications. Beside they are used in compatibilization aids for the rubber market and thermoplastic modification in wax casting compounds
The Wingtack grades are high-quality, low-color C5 and C5/C9 resins. These resins have utility in many markets. Beside of adhesives**, hydrocarbon resins are used in coatings, construction mastics and many specialty applications like compatibilization aids (rubber market) and thermoplastic modification in wax casting compounds.
Hydrocarbon resins like Wingtack® and Cleartack® cover a wide spectrum of aliphatic and aromatic grades.
* Former Norsolene ** Hot Melts, pressure sensitive adhesives, -tapes, lables
Main operation purpose in coatings:- increase of solid contend- increase of chemical resistance- pigment & surface wetting- tackifying and adhesion.
Page 15Coating Industries February 2017
HYDROCARBON RESINS
are thermoplastic polymers with a molecular weight below 2000 g/mol. Liquid- and solid resins up to a softening point of approx. 200°C are available. Depending on their raw material resource they are clustered into: - Petroleum Resins (based onto mineral oil)
- Cumaron-Inden Resins (based onto coal tar)
- Terpene Resins (based onto coniferous wood)
Advantages1. Hydrocarbon resins are solutable in aromatics, terpene, ketone, ester and ether. 2. Because of their low mollecular mass hydrocarbon resin solutions are low viscous at a high solid contend.3. In physically drying systems they improve solid contend and several wetting properties.4. Missing of saponifiable groups cause improvement of water- and chemical resistance.5. Hydrocarbon resins show no interactions with active pigments like Zinc-oxides, -phosphates…
Disadvantages1. They are mainly used in indoor applications because under UV-light they tend to embrittlement.
ApplicationfieldsHydrocarbon resins are mainly used combinations with Chlorinated rubber to develope chemical- andmarine resistant protective coatings. Often blended with tarmac or other bituminous binder. Prekondensations with drying oils allow to develope oxidative drying variants who are used in printingink industrie. Furthermore putties, adhesives, paper, carton and wood imprägnations are based on.

Physical propertiesAddicted to the chemical structure various colors are possible, both with different particle size. The photoluminescentproperty remain „forever“ (no aging process from charging to charging), as long as the particle will not oxidizing. All pigments are available with a surface treatment which prevent against oxidation. These treatment is essential forthe use in waterborne binder systems or outdoor applications.

Superior protection
Our natural mineral offers better protection than synthetics when used in marine paints and coatings.
Greater resistance to corrosion
The lower level of soluble salts in natural red oxide ensures long term protection against blistering in protective coatings.
Quality and durability
Though less expensive, there is no loss of quality or durability when using our natural oxide.
Less environmental impact
Oxired is coming from our own mine, guaranteeing consistency and quality. It‘s sun dried, milled,
graded and packaged. There are no additives, chemical process agents used during production
unlike synthetic iron oxides who are based on toxic residues during production process..
Cost saving
By replacing synthetic red oxide with the proper OXIRED® grade you will find very significant cost savings.

Key differences between processes summarised
Iron oxide red grades are among the most important colour pigments. Their properties are determined in part by the
manufacturing process. In particular, heat stability, grinding stability and flocculation behaviour are directly related to the
manufacturing process. The various processes differ in the demands they impose on producers, including the responsible
use of raw materials and energy, and the treatment of waste air and water Consideration must be given here to both the
process and the boundary conditions under which it is performed.
Laux process 9 Fe + 4 C6H5 - NO2 + 4 H2O 3 Fe3O4 + 4 C6H5 - NH2
reaction 2 Fe3O4 + 0.5 O2 3 α-Fe2O3
Precipitation process : 2 FeSO4 + 4 NaOH + 0.5 O2 α-Fe2O3 + 2 Na2SO4 + 2 H2O
reaction:
Copperas process 6 FeSO4 x (n H2O) + 1.5 O2 → a-Fe2O3 + 6 SO3 + n H2O
reaction
Penniman red process Nucleation: 2 Fe + 2 HNO3 α-Fe2O3 + 2 NO+ H2O
(simplified reactions) Iron nitrate production: 4 Fe + 10 HNO3 4 Fe(NO3)2 + NH4NO3 + 3 H2O
Formation reaction: 15 Fe + Fe(NO3)2 + 10 O2 8 α-Fe2O3 + 2 NO

Production process affects pigment properties
The different manufacturing processes influence the pigment characteristics in a specific way. The most noticeable effect is
caused by calcination. For the sake of simplicity, the four manufacturing processes described can be divided into the calcined
Laux and copperas grades and the non-calcined precipitation and Penniman grades, with each of the two groups displaying
distinctive behaviour. As explained above, a pigment’s shade is strongly influenced by the mean particle size and the particle
size distributon..

ATP dissociates as AlH2P3O10 P3O105+ AL3+ 2H+
Tri-polyphosphate ion (P3O105+) has an exellent chelating power towards iron ion (Fe3+). This is many
times higher than that of the ortophosphate ion (PO43-) utilized in the corrosion inhibition mechanism of
zinc phosphate pigment.
Tri-polyphosphate ion (P3O105+) sequesters iron ion (Fe3+), then forms a polyphosphate passivation film
as (Fe3+AL3+) X (P3O10) with excellent corrosion inhibiting property on the coated surface.

DISPERSING AGENT NEBOSPERSE A
65Coating Industries Page |
Type: Ammonium salt of a low molecular polyacrylic acid.
Fields of application: Dispersing agent for inorganic pigments and fillers in aqueuos systems.
Characteristics: Due to its excellent wetting effects NEBOSPERSE A makes the preparation of pastes of inorganic pigments and fillers with water much easier. It improves the storage stability of high-pigmented dispersion paints and coatings so that a thickening can be avoided. NEBOSPERSE A may be diluted with any quantity of water. Short-term freezing does not affect it‘s dispersing effect‘s.
Dosage: NEBOSPERSE A had to be added in ranges between 0.5 and 1.5% relating to the filler/pigment mixture.
You can use this dispersing agent at a pH-value betweeen 7.5-10. In combination with polyphosphates its wetting capacity may be improved considerably. The recommended quantity of polyphosphate to be added is stipulated at approx. 0.2%, as related to the filler/pigment combination.
Dispersing and stabilizing effects of NEBOSPERSE A are independent of the wide range of binders used in dispersion paints.
General: Under normal storage conditions dry at a temperature area from approx. (10-20 °C)Nebosperse A may be stored for at least 1 year.
Specifications:Viscosity at 20°C (DIN 53788) 60–120 mPa.s(Haake Rotovisco RV 20 , MS:MV-DIN)Solid content (DIN 53189) 30% ± 1pH (DIN 51785) 7.8 ± 0,5Specific gravity (DIN 51757) 1.12 g/mlIonicity anionic
