Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 14: January 2015 Praise for Pupils at Coastlands The school has recently purchased a new reward system called Epraise. It’s really good because parents can access this website as well and see the progress of their child/children. There are different categories in which they can be awarded like: being organised, good work, being helpful, good behaviour and positive playtime. There are house points too, so if you get a point it goes towards your yellow, red or blue house team’s overall points. As of Tuesday afternoon (2.45), the current leaders throughout the whole school are Liam Baldry then Ollie Rees, followed by Ethan Davies. To check how your child is doing on the system, just search for ‘epraise’, click on ‘school login’, type in ‘Coastlands’ then click on ‘parents’. Type in your email then Epraise will send you a password. Any problems, contact school. Emily Gray and Zoe Eagle are really looking forward to the future with Epraise! SAVE YOUR ENERGY Last week a man called Tim Brew came in to our school to work with us on Operation Energy. He told us how to save energy and about how many watts are in lots of electrical objects. We also rode a bike to power light bulbs to see how hard it is to power energy using a bike. Class 3 now have to work together in groups to put on an Energy Week, where we encourage people to save energy. This will take place the week after half term. WPC Thomas Visit This week we had a special visitor called WPC Thomas. She told Class One a story about people who help us. She brought a dragon puppet to help her. In Class Three she taught us about cyberbullying. She told us to remember the word SMART. This stands for: Safe – keeping yourself safe Meeting – don’t meet up with anyone you don’t know Accepting – only accept your friends Remember – remember to keep your password private Tell – tell an adult if something makes you feel uncomfortable Quick space quiz 1. Which planet has prominent rings around it? 2. Which planet is known as the red planet? 3. Which planet is the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon? 4. What name is given to the group of planets that orbit the sun? 5. In which year did man first land on the moon? Find out the answers in our next issue or scan the QR code with your smart phone or Ipad. LNG Calendar Success Again! At the end of last term we had the exciting news that pupils from Coastlands had won the LNG calendar art competition yet again (for the third year running!). Not only that… there were two winners from our school. Well done to Sophie Marshall and Ella Courie for their fantastic artwork. They won an ipad for the school and a bag full of goodies for themselves.

Yr 6 Girls Welsh DayElin, Ella, Zoe and Emily went on a Welsh course in Hubberston Community Centre, to work on a piece of writing to enter into the Urdd Eisteddfod. The schools who attended the day were St. Francis, Hubberston, Hakin and Coastlands. We had to write an email in Welsh, pretending to be a famous celebrity. We were writing to our mum thanking her for our birthday present. Our tables were laid out in a big U and Catrin (the lady who was the instructor) helped us to figure out the Welsh language. After we wrote it by hand we had to type it up on a computer after lunch. We then played a game using a soft ball where Mr. Urdd either actually threw the ball or pretended to throw the ball but if you flinched when he pretended to throw the ball you had to sit down. The year 6 girls enjoyed it very much.Don’t forget to have a go at some artwork for the Urdd Eisteddfod. There are loads of competitions and you’ve got until the beginning of March to create something really special.

School Council NewsRecently we have been discussing how to make school lunch times happier. Each class had a class council meeting about it, talking about and writing down their ideas. The ideas are now in a file ready to be looked at in our next meeting. Mrs Davies has also redone our School Council Board. If you’re in school and would like to find out about the school councillors’ views, please have a read.

Global Work at CoastlandsThis week we have finally received our certificate for the International Schools Award (Foundation Level) in recognition of our work towards global learning. Even more exciting, Coastlands has been chosen as a Lead School in Wales for the Global Learning Programme. We are the only school this side of Swansea to have been selected and we will be coordinating lots of Pembrokeshire primary schools in this area.

Eco-Committee UpdateThe Eco Warriors have been working hard at reviewing their targets and on re-vamping the eco board with 3d models of all our eco mascots. Congratulations to Jorja Parry, our newest eco member, who has just joined the group.Have a go at solving these eco-anagrams:
