Over 100 people packed the Camden Public Library’s Picker Room to hear Dr. Yossi Leshem, Israel’s best known ornithologist and environmental educator, make an extremely interesting and enjoyable presentation. CSC co-sponsored this event with the Mid-Coast Audubon Society and Congregation Adas Yoshuron of Rockland. His topics ranged from identifying and flying beside migrating birds in a powered glider, to defining the location, altitude and likely dates of ornithological flyways, to pleasant ways of extracting funding from both military and civilian sources, to helping children, citizens and governments of countries hostile to one another work happily together on an important, “neutral” project. His presentation was clear, intelligent and witty. The audience wished he could have spoken for a much longer time, and crowded up to ask questions and to order copies of his lavishly illustrated, autographed book. Dr. Lesham spent the remainder of his two week trip to this country as a visiting faculty member at Audubon’s Hog Island, Maine facility and at an Audubon facility in Connecticut. He is a Professor at Tel Aviv University, and the founder and director of the International Center for Bird Migration. Dr. Leshem was a former Director of The Society for Protection of Nature in Israel, and is a retired Lt. Colonel in the Israeli Air Force. His study results have saved many fliers from fatal bird-plane collisions. “Twice every year like clockwork, half a billion birds of 280 different species fly through Israel on their way to and from Africa, Asia, and Europe,” says Leshem. “The

The Midcoast has three outstanding libraries - Skidompha, (Damariscotta), Thomaston and Camden. Take out a book, see a film, participate in a discussion, listen to an author talk, or bring a child to one of the many children’s activities offered. Many of these libraries are non-profit and depend on patron and community support. Help keep these precious resources robust and contribute to your library.

Holy Land is eclipsed as the sky is filled with birds from three continents. Although many marvel at this sight, what few understand is how these birds provide opportunities for peace in the Middle East. “Migratory birds know no boundaries. They cross thousands of kilometers without regard to national borders and are equally at home in one country as the next. For these reasons, they are our best diplomats. Over my 40-year career as one of Israel's leading bird experts, I have personally seen enemies turned into friends in a region rife with conflict all because of the flight of a single bird.”
