May 2nd - Paula Barnes - has nearly 20 years of teaching experience in Dallas and Houston quilt shops, and enjoys numerous distinctions and guild affiliations throughout the state of Texas. Paula designs beautiful reproduction quilts, incorporating today's simplified quilt making tools and techniques. Paula will be presenting her lecture on the "History of Red Crinoline Quilts". May 17th - Sandy Coffey - lived in Alaska for 24 years where my husband and I raised our two boys. He took early retirement and we moved back to Texas where I quickly took my dream job of working in a quilt shop. The business was also a Bernina dealer where I sold machines and taught the new owners how to get the most from their purchase. I also taught all levels of quilt making skills to our customers. The owner of the shop retired and the shop closed and I thought maybe I was ready to retire, too. Instead I joined the staff of Stitchin’ Heaven in Quitman and now Mineola, Texas. I worked as the Block of the Month manager and later also as store manager. I have since semi retired but keep my hand and mind involved in the shop by working there part time. I also own a longarm and have custom quilted many of the samples that hang in the shop. My quilting has been featured in several quilting magazines in conjunction with Stitchin’ Heaven. Sandy's presentation will be entitled "Are we Crazy or What".

Community Service by Sakeenah Mubashshir

Greeting Guild Members… With the 10th Anniversary Quilt Showcase fast approaching and there’s lots

of work to do to prepare for the show, I think it’s only appropriate that I limit my pleas for charity work.

However, this thought came to mind…if there are members who are unable to attend Guild Meetings

but would love to help with Charity Work, I would be happy to deliver!!! Whether its quilting, making

quilt tops, or sorting precuts to make kits…just give me a call (832)229-7031.

Thanks so much to the following members who helped with quilting, sewing, and crocheting over the past

months:

Cathy Price Judy Kohn Grace Clarke Jerri Warren

Barbara Baxter Margie Koenig Helen Wilems Barb Wall

Darleen Patin Joan Bell Mary Ashcraft Joyce Jackson

Jane Kress Debbie Penalber Diane Hickey Diama Corty

Community Service truly appreciates the hard work that all members are doing for the Guild.

HOBBS UPC Labels

REMINDER, we continue to collect Hobbs UPC Labels. The UPC label provides a discount to the

Guild when purchasing batting from the Manufacturer. If you are purchasing Hobbs Batting for

your quilting, PLEASE recycle the bags by turning them in to Community Service at the Guild Meet-

ings.

QUILT SHOW: “A Decade in Stitches” September 7-8, Stafford Centre Hands up-how many of you have finished at least one of your show quilts? There’s only a little over 2 months before entry forms are due on Ju-ly 19, so it’s time to get sewing! Please check the website for all forms and info. This month, we start recruiting volunteers for all areas of our show. This is your show, and it benefits all guild members. An incredible amount of support is needed to put on an event like this, so please be generous with your time. There will be sign up sheets at all guild meetings now through August. The next show committee meeting will be Saturday, May 19, 10:00-12 noon at the University Branch Fort Bend Library, in the upstairs conference room. Note this is a different room than where we normally meet. We’re coming into crunch time, so really need as many of our com-mittee chairs to attend these meetings as possible. All members are welcome.

chapel and is selling tickets for their drawing. This year’s By-Laws Review Committee’s recommended changes have been approved by the

Board with minor updates. These proposed changes to the By-Laws were published in the March and April newsletters. Rebecca Trevino made the motion to accept these changes and approve the new By-Laws. Kay Paul seconded the motion. Mark opened the floor for any discussion by membership. Forty-two members were present which qualified as a quorum of membership. The vote was to accept the By-Laws as amended.

A nominating committee is needed to set the list of candidates for next year’s Board. A re-view shows that the secretary position, the Rep-at-Large position, President-elect, work-shop chair-elect and programs-elect positions will be open. The Board member who will be on the nominating committee is Joan Bell, current Program Chair-elect since she will not be running for office next term. The four nominating committee volunteers ap-proved by membership will be Pauline Manes, Linda Towle, Gracie Clarke, and Diama Cortez.

The 2019 Donation Quilt group is asking that if anyone would like to submit a top or quilt top near completion for the Donation quilt to get it to Rebecca Trevino for the next Board meeting.

Standing Rules are being updated to coordinate with the new By-Law changes. These will be reviewed at the next Board meeting for Board approval.

on a Friday in January. Forty shops meet at the convention center for two days. Instead of a shop hop where we get a bus and drive to multiple shops, Judy and Darlene are thinking we could rent a bus and drive to Waco, spend the day, and then return to Stafford. Judy and Darlene polled the group to see how many were interested. Based on the numbers indicating interest at the evening meeting and this meeting, it looks like enough are interested to be able to get a large bus and do this. Judy and Darlene will follow-up on this. Secretary: Cathy Price reported that all of the Board meeting minutes from the beginning of the Guild to present are now scanned in and stored on a thumb drive. She also reported that she will need someone to take minutes next month at the May 19th meeting. Kay Paul volunteered to take the minutes. Treasurer: Diane Hickey No Report Representative-at-Large: Sherri Stringfield No Report Retreat: Sally Staner reported the retreat has a couple of openings still for the April 22st – 26th retreat. The retreat will be at Jordan Ranch again. The cost this year is $300/person double occupancy. There will lots of activities and they usually visit quilt shops in the area. Also, Sally will be coordinating the Artisan Market at the 2018 Quilt show in September. She will be accepting the donation quilts, bags, wall hangings, table runners. Anything that can be sold will be considered. Mark Towle reminded everyone that a volunteer to coordinate future retreats is needed. 2018 Quilt Show Committee: Barb Wall noted several upcoming dates:

The next quilt show meeting will be May 19th at the Fort Bend University Branch Library at 10 am in the upstairs confer-ence room.

Deadline for entry forms is July 19th Quilt turn-in will be August 16th She has the Save the Date cards and encouraged everyone to take some and pass them out to places like hair salons, nail

places, etc. Get the word out about the show. Kay Paul announced that a form has been made to go with the quilts that are being turned in for the Quilt Auction. This will help the auctioneer provide the audience with background on the quilt. Susie Doe noted that she is receiving entry forms and reviewed what quilt show entry forms are on the website and what is needed to submit the forms. Sherri Stringfield noted that she wants everyone to sell program ads. This form is on the website. She has volunteers for the Junk Hippie event. She will be setting up a sign-in board next month for the quilt show volunteers needed. She reported on which shops she had delivered show information to. Peggy Johnson reported that they still need donations for the raffle baskets. Fabrics (neutral, batiks, solids, etc.), gift cards, and kits are all good basket items. Community Service: Sakeenah Mubashshir reported that she needs quilters to help with the charity quilts. At the night meet-ing, she brought in 8 packets for quilting and they all went home. She has more today! Quilts of Valor: Barbara Baxter reported that the sew-in is on the 4th Saturday, April 28th from 10am – 2:30pm. If you cannot come in, she has kits that can be worked on at home. Librarian: Linda Towle announced that she has more books in the activity room. These can be taken home by members for a donation. It is a different set of books than were at the previous meetings. She will continue to bring these in. Mark noted that the Board would need to decide what to do with the books that are not being taken. The April Birthday prize and the door prizes were presented. Show and Share was presented by Carol Kettlewell. The program by the Houston Modern Quilt Guild and many examples of modern quilts were presented. The meeting adjourned at 12:05pm Respectfully submitted by Cathy Price, Secretary Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild

Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild

Minutes of the March 5, 2018 Board Meeting

(approved April 4, 2018)

The meeting was called to order by Mark Towle, President at 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Missouri City location.

Board Members in attendance: Mark Towle, Rebecca Trevino, Cathy Price, Joan Bell, Gwen Goldsberry, Di-ane Hickey, and Sherri Stringfield. A quorum was present. Committee Members in attendance: Barb Wall, Pauline Manes, and Sakeenah Mubashshir.

The Minutes of the February 5th, 2018 Board meeting were approved as presented. The Treasurer’s Reports from February 2018 were reviewed. Pauline Manes suggested that the uncleared checks before 1/31/2018 be closed. The voided checks from 2016 and one from 2018 can also be updated to closed. There is a question on the Statement of Financial Income and Expense as to what is the expense “Workshop patterns/kits” since the Guild does not pay for kits or patterns. Diane Hickey will check with Kay Paul to clarify this and report back to the Board. Mark Towle made a motion to approve the reports with the requirement that Diane update the Board with the kits/pattern clarification. Rebecca Trevino seconded this motion. The Board approved the reports with the requirement noted.

Discussion Points: Anniversary Items

Pauline Manes reported that she can buy the denim shirts in either light or dark if the combined order is at least 24 shirts. These will cost about $20/shirt. If 48 shirts can be purchased, the price will drop to $14/shirt. The total order could include long sleeve shirts and men’s shirts, but a minimum of six of either one of these item must be in the order. The price for these shirts will be different. The other item to be ordered is the wo-ven logo patch. These will be slightly less than $2/item, but the sale price will be $2. Sherri Stringfield made a motion that an order form is prepared and Pauline take orders at the meetings in March. We will purchase 150 woven logos. If at least 24 shirts are ordered, we will place that order by the end of the month. Cathy Price seconded the motion. The Board approved the motion to move forward on the anniversary items.

Quilt of Valor Membership

The Guild Quilt of Valor annual membership fee of $3o is due. Rebecca Trevino moved that we pay the dues and continue the Guild membership. Joan Bell seconded the motion. This motion was passed by the Board.

Magazines

Mark Towle noted that Lisa Patterson has volunteered to bring the magazines to the meetings. She needs a cart for this. Sherri Stringfield volunteered to bring one she has for Lisa’s use.

Junk Hippie

Sherri Stringfield noted that the second Junk Hippie event is on July 14th. She made a motion that the Guild pays the $150 dollar fee to attend this for promotion of the Guild and the upcoming Quilt Show. This motion was seconded by Rebecca Trevino. The Board approved the motion. Sherri noted she will ask for volunteers for the event.

13

Towle reported that the newsletter has not been published for March as of today. Rebecca Trevino will discuss moving the existing By-Laws and Standing Rules to the page where the Board member-ship is listed versus their current location in the Forms section. It is important that the proposed By-Laws be published for review in the newsletter. Barb Wall and Pauline Manes noted that it is much easier to insert a PDF into the Publisher program instead of the Word file. The PDF will retain it’s formatting and does not require extensive fixes. Library Status Mark Towle reported that Linda Towle has turned in $67 dollars from the February evening meeting and has some money from the day meeting to be turned in. There are still a large number of the old books to be purged. These will continue to be brought to the meetings. Open Position Mark Towle indicated that a member may be interested in the open position of Workshop Chair-elect. Standing Rules Changes Rebecca Trevino, Cathy Price, and Sherri Stringfield met to prepare proposed changes to the Stand-ing Rules that have resulted from the proposed changes to the By-Laws. Rebecca handed out the up-dated Standing Committee Chair Job Descriptions and the proposed Standing Rules changes for re-view and discussion. Updates were suggested for both documents. Cathy Price will make the sug-gested changes and email copies of these to the Board for review and further discussion. Advertising The Board clarified that announcing upcoming Quilt Shows by other Guilds does not conflict with our By-Laws as related to advertising. It was noted that we should be announcing or publishing those we know of since education is one of our goals. Board and Committee Reports President-elect: Rebecca Trevino made a motion that the Board meetings be moved to 3 pm on the Wednesday of the scheduled evening meetings since Mondays were a problem for several Board members. Sherri Stringfield seconded this motion. The motion was approved by the Board. Sherri will check on a location for the April meeting. Membership: Pam Biswas was absent. Mark Towle reported we have 118 members. Rebecca Trevino indicated that she is working on a new member orientation packet and needs directories to put in the packet. Programs: Gwen Goldsberry reported that the program on the 7th will be “Break out the Crayons”. She will need four volunteers to help with the presentation. The program on March 15th will be Sheer Bliss. Program Chair-Elect: Joan Bell reported that she will have contracts for Board approval by the next meeting. She will also meet with the FUMC scheduler to verify which days the church will not be available due to holidays next year. Several of the evening meetings are in conflict with holidays. Workshops: Kay Paul Absent Secretary: Cathy Price No Report

14

Treasurer: Diane Hickey asked who has the invoice for the Schulenburg Printing. Barb Wall

indicated that this was the donation quilt tickets and to check with Katherine Onstott. Diane

noted that she has the key to the P.O. Box and is checking it regularly so that vendor and mem-

bership items are picked up and updated.

Representative-at-Large: Sherri Stringfield indicated her poll of membership to see how

many would be interested in electronic payment showed about 50% would be interested. Paul-

ine Manes noted that MyGrove has a payment function. Pauline will check into this to see if

there is a charge and if it could be used. Also, Chase Bank has a card reader function. Pauline

did not know if there was a charge, but Diane Hickey can check into this.

Sherri Stringfield made a motion to check into downsizing the storage unit. Diane Hickey se-

conded the motion. The Board approved this motion.

Community Service: Sakeenah Mubashshir wanted to ask if she could clear some items out

of the storage room on the June Shop hop date. Cathy Price made a motion for the Board to ap-

prove Sakeenah’s plan for using the June 21st open date to clear out some of the older materials

in the storage room that can’t be used for charity quilts. This will help determine how much

storage area is needed. This motion was seconded by Rebecca Trevino. It was noted that there

is also fabric, batting, and kits at her home so that she can prepare the charity kits. Kay Paul

also has several bags of items for the workshops that she stores in her home. These should be

considered if space is being allocated. Cathy Price will continue to check on pricing and other

possible locations for storage units in the area. The Board approved the motion to clear out the

unusable fabrics and items.

Newsletter Editor: Diane Aleman Absent

Quilt Show 2018: Barb Wall reported that the committee heads met on the 26th of February.

The meeting with Janice Schindeler to discuss the live auction is still pending.

The committee thinks that it would be good to have a couple of the auction quilts appraised

and the appraisal included in the auction.

Vendor actions are being done by the committee to help fill Helen’s absence. Allison Etzler

is helping the vendor committee.

Some concern on the number of vendor responses was noted. The deadline for the discount

has been extended to March 15th.

Volunteer signup will begin in May.

Curating will be done on August 8th.

Floor plans will be finalized on August 12th.

Quilt turn in is August 16th.

Judging will be done on August 28th and 29th.

The next committee heads meeting will be March 26th at Sherri Stringfield’s home.

The next large committee meeting is scheduled for April 14th at the University Branch Fort

Bend Library. There being no other business to come before the Board, the meeting was

adjourned at 11:59 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Price, Secretary
