The second Cromer and Sheringham Arts Festival is coming! What was last year’s bold experiment - launched on a wing and a prayer - returns with a more assured but equally full and varied programme.

Building on the experience of last October - and buoyed by the enthusiasm to give it another go expressed by so many of the same local arts groups and creative individuals - ‘On the Brink’ will prolong the coming holiday season’s jollies for a further events-packed eight days between 22 and 29 October.

Why the subtitle, ‘On the brink’, you may be asking?

Well, firstly, it’s just another way of referring to ‘Coast’ and focusing attention on the twin seaside towns and their neighbouring villages.

But it also hints at a bit of drama, anticipation, even risk, and is meant to give a certain edge to this year’s offerings. Whatever happens, we can confidently look forward to starting autumn with a rich mix of poetry, music, stage shows, visual arts and happenings, along with all sorts of hands-on stuff for the children.

Jenny Griffin Artist & Theatre Designer

Merchants’ Place, Cromer Jenny Griffin attended the Leeds School of Art and later studied theatre design at the Slade. In addition to her theatre work, Jenny has produced an impressive range of artwork. The exhibition includes pictures from her time in Kenya as a WREN, drawings of Bridlington fishermen and a variety of lively cartoons, paintings and line drawings. 22 - 29 October

Sheringham Library Black Shuck is a well known ghost dog. Cromer had a sea monster sighting in 1930 during a Sunday school outing. Why do we fear and demonise what we don’t understand? Why do we seek to destroy or control what is alien to us? Could Shuck be an angel, not a devil? Why do we ridicule what is outside our experience? How else could these legends serve us? 22 - 29 October

Sea Change

The Stables, The Lobster, Sheringham Maddy Pikarsky currently works as a successful artist, designer and photographer, using skills developed from a strong foundation of drawing and design. Her unique compositions incorporate various found objects - ephemera collected over many years. Richly textured collages and mixed media pieces demonstrate an eclectic combination of techniques, some quirky and spontaneous, some soft, harmonious and serene. 22 - 29 October

Close To The EdgeNew watercolours by John Hurst

St Peter’s Church, Sheringham The watercolours, by professional artist and Salthouse resident John Hurst, are all about the skies, tides, people and architecture of the Norfolk Coast. John records every season, so this collection has a hint of autumn about it. East Anglia Landscapes and Seascapes Limited edition digital prints

Blue Sky Café, Cromer Howard Temperley is one of a growing number of artists to have turned from traditional paint to digital art. Like David Hockney, whose recent work his resembles, he uses the clean lines and bright colours of the medium to capture the character of the English countryside. In these limited edition prints he depicts the landscapes and seascapes of his native East Anglia. On the Brink…of Dreams andNightmares

Garden House Gallery, Cromer Lewis Davies (d. 2010) was a local art-ist who produced a large and varied body of work. This exhibition contains some earlier ink drawings which are semi-abstract but full of mystical feeling. They are intricate works, some - the Dreams - are most beautiful; and the Nightmares are uneasy images with feelings of doom, perhaps something unwished for just around the corner. 10:00 am - 5:00 pm 22 - 29 October

Fresh Paint

The Windham Arms, Sheringham Helen Herbert and Heather Tamplin will be working on a large painting during Coast 2011 using suggested ideas, picked at random, from themselves and visitors. The painting will be auctioned at the end of Coast 2011 with an option to leave a sealed bid. Portrait Gallery

It’s Your World

The Red Lion Hotel, Cromer An art workshop to decorate a Giant Globe made from recycled fabric. Participants can create a country from their own or provided recycled textiles, other recycled materials and found objects. Your creations will be placed onto the globe to create “Your World”, a fabulous sculpture that will feature in the Coast 2011 exhibition. Mapping the Wind: Kite Making

Lost and Sound Output Arts | Sound and Participation

Starting with the Elephant... Creative activities with the Sainsbury Centre team

The Brick Kiln, West Runton The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts explores the deep history of coastal change in the area, starting from the West Runton ‘elephant’, the Steppe Mammoth fossil bones dating back at least 500,000 years. Artists and scientists will be on site in the company of local experts exploring the geology, biodiversity and artistic potential of this beautiful spot. Blind Tiger Band

The Red Lion Hotel, Cromer A new generation hardrock band, storming the circuit with their own music and 80’s covers, throughout East Anglia, the Midlands and Amsterdam. Frequently on local BBC radio with their current singles “We got the fire” and “Can’t Wait”. The Band is always keen to support local charities, interrupting their busy schedule to appear at COAST, with support band, following appearances at North Walsham Live Aid and The Waterfront, Norwich. 8:00 pm 26 October

Overstrand Church The second concert in the Chamber Music Series at Overstrand Church promises to be a real treat. Corena Cracknell is one of the leading guitarists in East Anglia. Her superb technique and innate musicianship have garnered much praise from audiences and critics alike and we are very pleased she has agreed to join us for the Festival. Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Mozart Concerto for Flute & Harp

Overstrand Church Kate Munro – Clarinet, Philip Meader – Flute, Cindy Pennick – Harp, Dominic Hopkins – Violin, Keith Hobday – Violin, Claire Gibby – Viola, Naomi Fry - Cello. The recently formed Poppyland Chamber Ensemble is comprised of seven of the leading instrumentalists in the region. An Arts Celebratory Service

Our Surrealist Friends

The Red Lion Hotel, Cromer Krzysztof Fijakowski and Robert Short offer a sequel to ‘Living with Surrealism’, their double act at the same venue last year. Krzysztof will talk mainly about Jan Zvankmajer, the Czech animated filmmaker, showing several of his short films. Robert will reminisce about his 1960s in Paris when he got to know many of the members, past and current, of André Breton’s then still flourishing movement. 7:30 pm 25 October
