Coalesse, a division ofSteelcase Inc. (Coalesse),warrants that Coalesse,Brayton, Metro and Vectabrand commercial productsare free from defects in mate-rials or workmanship, for aperiod of (10) years, subject tothe exceptions listed below.Coalesse will repair or replacewith comparable product, at itsoption and free of charge, anyproduct, part or componentmanufactured after November16, 2009 that fails under nor-mal use as a result of suchdefect. This warranty appliesfrom the date of manufacture,regardless of shift usage andis valid only for the originalpurchaser.

This warranty does not applyto product failure resultingfrom: Normal wear and tear Failure to apply, install, ormaintain products according to published Coalesse instructions and guidelines Abuse, misuse, or accident Alteration or modificationof the product The substitution of anyunauthorized non-Coalesse components for use in theplace of Coalesse componentsin an integrated product solu-tion; such substitute compo-nents include but are notlimited to worksurfaces, legsupports, panels, brackets,shelves, overhead bins, andother integral components.

The following products andmaterials are not covered bythis warranty: Products considered con-sumables (e.g. lamps), Customers Own Material(COM) or non-standard textiles and materials Variations occurring in sur-face materials (e.g. colorfastness or matching grains,textures, and colors acrossdissimilar substrates and lots) Other manufacturers prod-ucts, including Carl Hansenand Emu. Coalesse will passthrough other manufacturerswarranties where applicable and to the extent possible.

Shipping and StorageCoalesse reserves the right toselect carrier and packagingmethod. Partial shipments maybe delivered. Coalesse is notliable for delays or deliveryfailure due to strikes, lockouts,labor, or transportation diffi-culties, failure or delay of sup-ply sources, accidents, fire,acts of God, or any othercause of like or unlike naturebeyond Coalesses control.Coalesse may transfer mer-chandise to storage if notaccepted when shipmentscheduled. Transfer and stor-age charges will be the cus-tomers expense. Coalessesinvoice is payable upon trans-fer. If transfer is made prior toconfirmed shipping date, stor-age expenses will be borne bycustomer.

Shipping charges MAY be calculated per order. Leadtimes vary by product.Coalesse reserves the right toselect carrier. Freight is included on domesti-cally manufactured productswithin the 48 contiguous statesof the United States and stan-dard freight service of CarlHansen & Son and Emu.

ClaimsMerchandise shipped fromCoalesse is thoroughlyinspected and properly packedbefore leaving the factory.Responsibility of its safe deliv-ery is assumed by the carrierat the time of shipment.Customer must match thefreight delivered with the bill oflading. Customer must exam-ine packaging material upondelivery and note any damageon the carrier bill of lading. Ifthere is damage to the packag-ing material, inspect the furni-ture immediately. If concealeddamage is found, contact thecarrier within 10 days of deliv-ery date. Save all packagingmaterials until after inspection.

Freight damage and claimsmust be reported by the pur-chaser to the carrier. Coalesseis not responsible for freightclaims. Claims for loss or dam-age must not be deducted fromour invoice, nor payment with-held awaiting adjustment ofsuch claims. Do not return anymerchandise to Coalesse with-out a Return Authorizationnumber. By following theseprocedures carefully, Coalesseguarantees our full support ofyour claims to protect youagainst loss or damages. Allclaims against Coalesse fordefects, errors or shortagesmust be made by customer inwriting within ten (10) daysafter delivery. Failure to makeclaims within ten (10) daysconstitutes acceptance of mer-chandise and waives claims.Cutting of textiles deemsacceptance of yardage andwaives all defects, errors, andshortages. Coalesse is notliable for subsequent damages.

Schedule EnhancementsCoalesse will entertain sched-ule enhancements on a case-by-case basis; however, pleaseunderstand that we mustreceive complete informationsuch as installation date, open-ing date etc...to make informedscheduling decisions.

No order move-ups or move-outs are allowed on any orderthat falls within the 15-workingday period of its manufacturingcompletion date. If it is withinthe 15-working day period,Coalesse will invoice at ship-ment but may offer storageoptions at a charge for manu-factured product.

Order Cancellations/ChangesAll order change/cancellationrequests must be submittedusing the Coalesse orderchange/cancellation requestform. Late changes could jeop-ardize the committed deliveryof an order.

Coalesse Rapid10 programs no change or cancellationsallowed.

Coalesse Products: No charges will be assessedfor change or cancellation 14or more calendar days prior tothe manufacturing completiondate (excludes holidays and/orlarge quantity project sizeorders). For import products,charges may apply.

No manufacturing changesare allowed 0-13 calendar daysprior to the manufacturingcompletion date. Simplechanges including shippingaddress changes are subject toapproval but will be accommo-dated when possible.

No cancellations or productchanges will be accepted forquick ship or special/customproduct orders including spe-cial laminates. A cancellationfee will be applicable for anycustom product and/or changemay jeopardize lead time.

If COM/COL has beenreceived at time of change orcancellation, it is the dealersresponsibility to advise dispo-sition or return of materials.Coalesse will not store materi-als after 30 days.

Additional Charges Changes or cancellationsthat involve any of the follow-ing may be subject to a chargeearlier and/or greater thanshown above: Special engi-neering product, CSM, pre-ordered components, materialswith extended lead times (e.g.,veneers, special paint, etc.) orlarge quantities of standardmaterials.

Use our Order Change/Cancellation Request Form forall order changes. It isCoalesse responsibility toaccurately process changeorder requests. It is thedealers responsibility to verifythat we have accurately inter-preted your change requestsby checking the acknowledge-ment after the change hasbeen made. Toensure all new products aresocially responsible, we haveengaged the cradle-to-cra-dle design consultancy,MBDC, to advise us and pro-vide third-party analysis of thematerials and processes weuse to create our products. AsCoalesse grows, socialresponsibility will be anessential part of our decision-making, from design to dis-posal. We believe that oursuccess on the environmentalfront will be built on the accu-mulation of a multitude ofsmall steps and the occasionalbig leap. We are starting witha green outlook and we haveevery intention of growinggreener.

WOODS: FSC CERTIFICATION

Our policy with wood sourcedfrom outside North Americaand our approved Europeanpartners is that they must becertified by The ForestryStewardship Council (FSC) toensure these woods havebeen responsibly harvestedfrom sustainable forests, andthat the rights and welfare ofworkers and local communi-ties are being respected.Through an FSC label, woodcan be traced back to its origi-nal source of supply.

Our Geneva, NY manufactur-ing location has chain of custody certification for work-ing with FSC certified woods.

CHROME: A NEW ALTERNA-TIVE TO METAL

Chromed steel is a mainstayof the contract furnitureindustry because it is consid-ered a premium finish withhigh durability. But dependingon the type of chrome pro-cessing used, it can have adetrimental impact on humanand environmental health. Themost common method ofchrome plating uses hexava-lent chrome, a known carcino-gen and considered by MBDCin their color-coded ratingsystem (green, yellow, red), tobe a hard-red chemical.There are no health hazardsassociated with chrome onceit has been applied, but thehexavalent chrome electro-plating process can be hazardous.

Is there an alternative?Coalesse is opting for a safermethod of plating and haspartnered with a domesticsupplier who uses only triva-lent chrome, a non-carcino-genic form of the metal. Few,if any, metal finishingprocesses are without envi-ronmental challenges, andchrome is no exception.Working with the best technol-ogy currently available, wewill continue to seek new andbetter alternatives.

BUILDING TO LAST

Building longevity into prod-ucts is an important sustain-ability strategy. A chair ortable that lasts for 50 or 100years or more will not have tobe replaced, saving the mate-rials and finishes and embod-ied energy from beingduplicated in another form.Coalesse is quality furnituredesigned to outlast its buyers.We hold up Hans Wegnerdesigns as the model oflongevitypieces manufac-tured a generation ago are stillprized possessions today. Ourhope is that every piece in ourcollection appreciates in valueover the years, so it will bepassed on.

ONGOING AUDITS

As the Coalesse collectiongrows, our intention is to liveby the cradle-to-cradle (C2C)philosophy described byMBDC this way: Instead ofdesigning cradle-to-graveproducts, dumped in landfillsat the end of their life, thegoal is create products forcradle-to-cradle cycles,whose materials are perpetu-ally circulated in closed loops.Maintaining materials inclosed loops maximizes mate-rial value without damagingecosystems. Coalesse hascontracted MBDC to audit thematerials used in the majorityof our existing products, andto advise us as we developnew products. We intend toachieve Cradle to Cradle certi-fication on the highest per-centage of products possible.As Coalesse grows, socialresponsibility will be anessential part of our decision-making, from design to dis-posal. EOOS - AustriaTogether

The Austrian-based EOOS wasfounded in 1995 by MartinBergmann, Harald Grndl, andGernot Bohmann, three gradu-ates of the Academy of AppliedArts in Vienna. The partners col-laborate on all projects, special-izing in the design of furniture,consumer products, and archi-tectural spaces, particularly flag-ship retail stores. Customersinclude celebrated names suchas Armani, Adidas, Moroso,A1/Vodafone, Matteograssi,Walter Knoll, Keilhauer, Duravitand Zumtobel Staff.

EOOS relies heavily on researchand a design process they referto as poetic analysis. The part-ners seek words, sentences, orimages that evoke conceptsdeeply rooted in mankind.

Says Martin Bergmann: Ourwork is not one-dimensional,nor is it based on a directprocess that leads from a spe-cific customer requirement toour design. We actuallyresearch the context of thecustomers brand. What is itderived from? How did thebrand myth come about? Whatdoes the brand stand for? Ourapproach frequently enablesus to illuminate a previouslyundiscovered dimension of the customer.

Jeffrey Bernett - USADavos Chair & Benches

Jeffrey Bernett, who foundedhis renowned Studio B in1995, presented his first col-lection of furniture and acces-sories, entitled Ideas forProduction,at the May 1996International ContemporaryFurniture Fair (ICFF) in NewYork City. The designs wonthe Editors Award for BestDecorative Accessories. Atthe ICFF in May of 2000,Bernett, along with five otherdesigners, was named BestNew Designer for work withthe U.S. manufacturer, Dune.

Highly versatile, Bernettworks in interior architecture,furniture, household products,lighting, fashion accessories,graphic design/corporateimage and art direction. He isthe first American designer tobe hired by a number of majorEuropean companies. Recentclients include Authentics,Viccarbe, B&B Italia, Boffi,Cappellini, Dune, EsteLauder, Hidde/sdb, MichaelKors (LVMH), Ligne Roset, andTroy.

His work has been featured inAbitare, Casa Abitare, DesignDiffusion News, Domus, ElleDecor, House & Garden,Interni, Intramuros,Metropolitan Home, The NewYork Times, Ottagono, and thebooks 50 Products and 50Beds.

In 1995, Bernett foundedConsultants for DesignStrategy. In collaboration withNicholas Dodziuk, he consultson custom furnishings and fix-tures for clients such asNorthwest Airlines, MichaelKors, and Samsonite.

Bernetts explanation of whyhe designs (Interior Designmagazine, December, 2003):Im very mechanicallyinclined, which includes anaffinity for and curiosity aboutmachines, industrial process,and materials. I was born withthe benefit of being a goodthree-dimensional thinker, aswell as studying a fair bit ofbusiness at university. Designwas the perfect professionculture for commerce.

PearsonLloyd - UKBob and Lox

Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearsonmet while studying atEnglands Royal College of Artin the early 1990s. TheLondon-based PearsonLloydstudio was founded in 1997based on their shared desireto combine furniture andproduct design. They work anumber of design disciplines,including furniture, consumerproducts, transport, and thepublic realm.

The designers have writtenthat their desire is to producecompelling solutions that areintelligent, appropriate andtimeless, and contribute towhat for us, is the still embryonic craft of industrialdesign.

PearsonLloyds work includes:Virgin Atlantic Airways UpperClass Suite (2003); a range ofwalk-in showers for IdealStandard (2005); a streetlighting system by Artemidefor The City of Westminster(2004); bus shelters and way-finding system for SheffieldCity (2007); and numerousfurniture projects for WalterKnoll, Bernhardt Design,Kokuyo, Tacchini, andAllermuir. The studio wasselected from over 150 com-panies to be one of four des-ignated product designconsultancies for Transportfor London (TFL) until 2009.

Jean-Marie - Massaud-FranceHoly Day Lounge & Tables,Emu Heaven, Massaud

In 2000, Jean-Marie Massaudformed Studio Massaud withDaniel Pouzet . Together, theyhave designed the TanabHouse (Fukuoka, Japan),Renaults displays at interna-tional motor shows, theModern Object concept store(Colombus, Ohio), the HIP spa(Nice, France), and the brandand architectural image ofLancme (cosmetics) andPoltrona Frau (furniture)worldwide. Studio Massaud isalso working on a 50,000-seatfootball stadium and two con-dominium towers(Guadalajara, Mexico), luxuryhotel (Paris, France), and acondominium building(Tribeca, New York).

A graduate of Les Ateliers,Ecole Nationale Suprieure deCration Industrielle,Massauds work, whilehumanistic, is rooted in theapplied sciences and clearlyinfluenced by his training asan engineer.

Victor Carrasco, GeneralManager of Viccarbe, says ofMassaud: His unmistakableHuman Nature Style hasallowed him to become, in fewyears, one of the top design-ers at international level.

Who other than Massaud,says Carrasco, would be ableto reinterpret Mies Van DerRohe in such an elegant andsophisticated way? Marc KrusinWrapp Chair

One of Europes brightestyoung designers, Marc Krusinis veteran of the Milan-basedgroup Codice 31, which hefounded in 1998 with fiveother designers. He nowdirects the design team of theprestigious Milanese designfirm, Piero Lissoni, overseeingprojects for internationalclients such as Alessi, Kartell,Flos, Thonet, and Wella.

Much of Krusins own work isdone through Klay, a firm heopened in 2004, specializingin objects of natural materialsinfluenced by world cultures.Cross-cultural influences runthroughout his practice.

He has designed for FontanaArte, Livit, Pallucco, Saporiti,Bosa ceramiche, Merten,Omnidecor, Glas Italia, and theSpanish furniture firm,Viccarbe. Viccarbes GeneralManager, Victor Carrasco,describes Krusin as a greattalent at a very young age.

Krusin was recently honoredin the 2008 Europe 40 Under40, an annual program co-sponsored by The EuropeanCentre for Architecture ArtDesign and Urban Studies andThe Chicago Athenaeum:Museum of Architecture andDesign. According to the pro-gram directors, Krusin is oneof the next generation ofinnovative architects anddesigners who will impactfuture living and working envi-ronments, cities, and ruralareas.

Patricia Urquiola -SpainLast Minute Stool, EmuRetrouv, and Hosu

Patricia Urquiola began train-ing as a student in architec-ture at Faculdad deArquitectura de Madri beforegraduating in design fromPolitecnico di Milano in 1989,where she studied underAchille Castiglione.

In 1991, as head of the productdevelopment team at DePadova, Urquiola designed herfirst commercial furniturepieces (in collaboration withVico Magistretti). They werehighly imaginative yet func-tionally pragmatic, an appeal-ing combination that hasdefined her work since.

From 1993 to 1996, Urquiolaowned a studio with twofriends, accepting commis-sions in architecture, interiors,showrooms, and restaurants.From 1996 to 2000 she man-aged the design group LissoniAssociati, then opened herown studio in Milan, focusingon product design, displays,and architecture.

Best known for her manydesigns for Moroso, Urquiolahas also worked for DePadova, Agape, B&B, Alessi,Driade, Foscarini, Kartell, Flos,Molteni, and Artelano amongother well-known furniturehouses. She has won numer-ous design awards and issought after as a speaker atconferences and universities.

Hans J. Wegner -DenmarkCarl Hansen & Son

Hans J. Wegner is one of the20th centurys most importantfurniture designers. A leaderof the Danish Modern style,Wegner is revered for hisiconic chairs with theirorganic beauty and amplecomfort. His understanding ofwood joinery was unsur-passed, his views on qualityuncompromising. Wegner balanced form and functionbrilliantly.

Carl Hansen & Son, theDanish furniture maker, beganworking with Wegner in 1949.Among his first designs forthe company were the leg-endary Wishbone Chair (CH24)and several other designs thatare still produced today.

During his long career,Wegner designed more than500 chairs. He almost singu-larly brought the chair out ofits hiding place as part of afurniture set and into its ownas modern sculpture. Hebroke new ground by combin-ing natural materials in imagi-native ways, always testingthe limits of craftsmanshipand serial production.

Wegner was demanding anddifficult to satisfy, often takingweeks to get the results hewanted from his craftspeople.But he was also limitlesslycurious, often playful, andalways elegant. We must takecare, he said, that everythingdoesnt get so dreadfully seri-ous. We must play but wemust play seriously.

While Wegner was awardedpractically every honor possi-ble for a furniture designer,and his chairs are featured inmuseums around the world,his design is accessible. Hebelieved that chairs weremade for sitting. Ergonomicsand usability had a central rolein his thinking before thosewords ever entered the mainstream.

Hans J. Wegner died inDenmark in January, 2007.

Brian Kane - USABindu

Brian Kane graduated fromthe University of Bridgeport,Connecticut, in 1970 with aBachelor of Science degree inIndustrial Design. He workedfor several New York Citydesign studios and spent ayear in Milan, Italy, workingfor Architect Silvio Coppola.His projects included thedesign of seating and case-goods for such companies asMobil Italia Spa. and BerniniSpa.

After returning to the U.S., heworked in New York forAtelier International (A.I).Work involved special contractfurniture design projects,showroom design, and thestartup of U.S. production ofItalian designs by Cassina,B&B, and Tecno.

Kane joined the design staff atMetropolitan FurnitureCorporation (Coalesse) inJanuary, 1977. Less thanthree years later, he becameone of four partners assumingownership of the firm, andtook on the responsibilities ofVice President of Design andProduct Development.

In 1987, Metropolitan wasacquired by Steelcase. Forthe next two years, Kanemaintained his position asVice President and wasresponsible for all aspects ofCoalesses design, includingproducts, showrooms, andgraphics.

In March of 1989, Kane estab-lished Kane Design Studio inSan Francisco.

Kanes designs have won over80 design awards and havebeen exhibited at the Whitneyand Brooklyn Museums inNew York and the Museum ofModern Art in San Francisco.

WilliamsSorel - USADenizen

WilliamsSorel is a California-based design studio estab-lished by Otto Williams andJess Sorel in 2007. Prior tolaunching their own firm, Ottoand Jess were the creativeforce behind Coalesse, bySteelcase. Their designs forCoalesse won more than 20awards, most notably for Bix,which defied conventionaloffice furniture categories.During their tenure atCoalesse, Otto and Jessdeveloped a passion and repu-tation for exploring the bound-aries between work and life inan effort to humanize themodern workplace.

The designers have said weare thinking less about cate-gorizing office furniture andresidential furniture, andthinking more about the expe-riences of working and livingin spaces, and the artifactsyou need to support both nar-ratives simultaneously.Theres really a move to allowfurniture to be furniture again,as opposed to equipment. In a sense, the office is being dismantled.

Together they hold numerousdesign and utility patents andtheir work has been publishedin Abitare, Azure, Contract,Fast Company, I.D. Magazine,Interior Design, andMetropolis. Otto holds a BFAin Industrial Design fromRhode Island School ofDesign. Jess holds a BFA inIndustrial Design from TheCalifornia College of the Arts.

Scott Wilson & MINIMAL - USASW_1 Collection, Power Pod

Lievore Altherr Molina wascreated in 1991 by the mergingof its three partners: AlbertoLievore, Jeannette Altherr,and Manel Molina. Since itsfounding, the studio has beendevoted to product design,consulting, and the art direc-tion of various companies,always offering individualizedsolutions.

Throughout the years the stu-dio has been recognized forits furniture design, its interiordesign projects, its products,and packaging. Simulta -neously, the studio has developed an intense teachingpractice, giving seminars, andtraining courses to new pro-fessionals at various Spanishuniversities and other organizations.

The studio has been awardedmany national and interna-tional awards, includingSpain's National Design Awardin 1999. Lievore AltherrMolina has exhibited theirwork in Barcelona, Cologne,Chicago, Stockholm, Helsinki,Lisbon, London, Louisiana,Madrid, Malm, Milan, NewYork, Paris, and Tokyo. Steven CopelandFree Stand

Steven Copeland is an indus-trial designer known for craft-ing mobility. "I'm looking fornew products that free uppeople's physical aspirationsand enable intuitive expres-sion... constructions that gelwith the amazing human bodyand celebrate agility."

Born in 1960 in Montreal,Copeland's kinetic approach todesign began as a child mak-ing toys and bicycles. Todayhis professional work isdefined by an interactive qual-ity, the way toys are definedby the play they inspire.

With a client list of elite manu-facturers in the U.S. andEurope, Copeland has won several of the industry's topawards and has been widelypublished and exhibited fordesign innovation. Best knowfor a groundbreaking collectionof lighting with Flos, Steelcase,Knoll, and Luxo, Copeland hasbuilt a reputation for creativeproblem-solving that led to collaborations with NASA andM.I.T., and to work with RhodeIsland School of Design and theUniversity of the Arts inPhiladelphia, P.A. He has alsopioneered new levels of performance in computerergonomics and disabledcycling.

Toan NguyenLagunitas

Toan Nguyen was born inParis in 1969 and graduated inIndustrial Design at ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris, in 1995.

After experiences in severaldesign studios in Paris,Barcelona, and Milan andnotably ten years of collabora-tion with Antonio Citterio asdesign director and designpartner, signing products formany brands such as Axor-Hansgrohe, B&B Italia, Flos,Fusital, Guzzini, Iittala, Kartell,Metalco, Skantherm,Technogym, or Vitra, ToanNguyen founded his owndesign studio based in Milanin 2008.

Toan Nguyen Studio is a mul-tidisciplinary Atelier focusedon design development inmany different design fields,from furniture to technologicalproducts, in partnership withleading international compa-nies based in Germany, Italy,Spain, Switzerland, and USAsuch as Accademia, Dedon,Fendi Casa, Laufen, Lema,Moroso, Urmet Group,Varaschin, Viccarbe, andWalter Knoll.
