BB&O Golf Partnership Coaching Conference

Following his appointment as the BB&O golf partnership’s Coach

Coordinator, Duncan Woolger organised a coaching conference for the

coaches in the area on Wednesday 21st November 2012.

With the rain pouring outside, it was an excellent opportunity for coaches to

take a day out and come and listen to some of the industry’s best; 28 coaches attended from all over

the region, with a mixture of volunteer, assistant and fully qualified coaches. The theme of the day was

developing the coach pathway and junior golf.

Sam Carr from the PGA started proceedings off with a 45 minute presentation on the coaches’

pathway, including the new qualifications, and informing coaches about the Right Coach, Right Place,

Right Time initiative which will be growing over the next couple of years. He was followed by Jamie

Edwards, a performance coach for Trained Brain, who gave an eye opening and inspiring talk on ‘The

Brand You’ and how coaches could market themselves more effectively. This also involved various

interactive activity, which everyone enjoyed and which united the group.

Page 7: Coaching Matters Issue 9 - Dec 2012

6

Rob Spurrier and Gavin Grenville Wood from Orbis Golf continued the morning session to talk about

building a successful junior academy with the help of The Golf Foundation and their Golf Roots

initiative. During lunch, the coaches were given a Training Needs Analysis (TNA’s) to complete, and

were assisted by the County Sports Partnership Coaching Development Managers who attended. The

BB&O Golf Partnership are hopeful that through the feedback received on the TNA’s we will be able to

implement a winter coach development programme so that the knowledge and development of our

coaching workforce can be developed further.

During lunch the coaches networked and completed a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) which will be

used to inform the planning of BB&O CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programme.

After lunch Andy Taylor told the story of his coaching journey from assistant to PGA tutor which linked

in well with previous presentations in the day on the progress along the coaching pathway. The final

speaker of the day was the one and only John Jacobs, who many regard as a coaching legend, and

who in many people’s eyes was the very first ‘golf coach’ paving the way for coaches such as Butch

Harmon and David Leadbetter. For more background information on John Jacob’s click here

There was much praise for all of the speakers throughout the day and after the conference. The BB&O

Golf Partnership would like to thank all of the speakers for agreeing to attend the coaching conference

and hope that all of the coaches took away some useful information.

Oxfordshire Netball coaches shine at National Awards…….

After a thrilling match which saw England beat Jamaica 65-51 in the first

match of the Netball Test Series in September, the International Conference

Centre played host to England Netball’s Volunteer celebration evening –

The Goalden Globes. Oxfordshire were nominated in three award

categories; Yolanda Owen who is the South Region Coach of The Year,

Rhonda Forbes-Smith, the South Region Teacher of the Year and Sue Blackshaw, the South Region

Muriel McNally winner.

With an audience of 400, the event was a huge success and all volunteers across England were

thanked and recognised for their hard work in making Netball such a popular sport in the UK.

Towards the end of the event EN CEO Paul Clark read out the achievements of one of Oxfordshire’s

most dedicated volunteers Sue Blackshaw. As Sue stepped up to receive the prestigious Rose Award,

the audience gave a standing ovation in recognition of her achievements.

Sue has dedicated many years to the development of Netball in Oxfordshire but most notably the last

few years she has been instrumental in creating not one, but two floodlight Netball centres, she is a

great role model and a true ambassador for the sport.

SPORTING LEGACY – More people than ever playing sport every week Figures released recently by Sport

England show that 15.5 million

people aged 16 and over are playing

sport every week. That’s 750,000

more than last year and 1.57 million

more than when London won the

Olympic Paralympic bid. Sport England published the latest Active People Survey results (6thth

December), covering the year to October 2012, which reveal by every measure that playing sport has

gone up. The strongest growth has been among women, with half a million women on their bikes,

playing netball, running and swimming and going to the gym in the past year helping to reduce the

gender gap in sport.

The figures also revealed the inspirational impact of the Games – the number of people taking part

has risen sharply in the period since the 2012 Games got underway, with strong increases in Olympic

Sports such as cycling, sailing and volleyball.

More disabled people are playing sport at least once a week, but participation rates still lag behind

those for non-disabled people. Sport England has announced a £10.2 National Lottery investment to

tackle this challenge.

Two thirds of the sports measured by the Active people Survey have shown a positive trend over the

past year with athletics, judo, tennis and swimming among those growing in popularity. Cricket was

among the grassroots sports that suffered the wettest summer for a century!

Young people aged between 16 and 25 are the most active in our society, but increasing participation

in the age group remains tough and this is a priority for Sport England’s five year strategy announced

January 2012

These are very encouraging results and even better, Oxfordshire once again is acclaimed as the most

active and sporty county. No time to rest on our laurels though and we need more “Activators”

Foundation, Learn to Swim and Aquatic Skills.

The resources will be available to order from the online Awards Centre from 1stNovember 2012.

These include resources for each of the Frameworks, a Parents’ Guide, Teachers’ Toolkit and Games

Pack.

The new resources and refreshed programme will provide a great opportunity for learn to swim

providers to attract new customers to their learn to swim schemes, including attracting adults to the

pool, not just to learn to swim but to improve their swimming.

Research

Exploring the Most Beneficial Way to Teach Children with Disabilities Sport; from the Coaches

and PE Teacher’s Perspectives

We are inviting all coaches and or PE teachers to take part in a research study that seeks to find out

the most beneficial method to teach sport to children with disabilities. Should you agree to participate

in this study, we would like you to complete the survey monkey.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KXGTNTJ

This should take no more than 10 minutes. Your participation is completely voluntary and you are free

to withdraw at any time. The data and results we receive from the survey will be completely

anonymous and stored anonymously. Your identity will not be known to us or your employer. Whether

you chose to take part or not, will have no influence or your employment or relationship with your

supports for coaching young people with physical disabilities in sports. This is a student dissertation

study taken as part of an under-graduate research project towards a dissertation in Sport

Science. This study has been approved by the Oxford Brookes University Departmental Research
