    NFHS COACHES ASSOCIATION

    The function of a coach is to educate students through participation in interscholastic com petition.

    A n interscholastic program should be designed to enhance academ ic achievem ent and should

    never interfere w ith opportunities for academ ic success. Each student should be treated w ith the

    utm ost respect and his or her w elfare should be considered in decisions by the coach at all tim es.

    A ccordingly, the follow ing guidelines for coaches have been adopted by the N FHS Board of

    D irectors.

    The coachshall be aw are that he or she has a trem endous influence, for either good or ill, on the

    education of the student and, thus, shall never place the value of w inning above the

    value of instilling the highest ideals of character.

    The coachshall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact w ith

    students, officials, athletic directors, school adm inistrators, the state high school athletic

    association, the m edia, and the public, the coach shall strive to set an exam ple of the

    highest ethical and m oral conduct.

    The coachshall take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse.

    The coachshall avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco products w hen in contact w ith players.

    The coachshall prom ote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct his or her

    program in harm ony w ith the total school program .

    The coachshall m aster the contest rules and shall teach them to his or her team m em bers. The

    coach shall not seek an advantage by circum vention of the spirit or letter of the rules.

    The coachshall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsm anship by spectators, both directly

    and by w orking closely w ith cheerleaders, pep club sponsors, booster clubs, and

    adm inistrators.

    The coachshall respect and support contest officials. The coach shall not indulge in conduct

    w hich w ould incite players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials

    or players is unethical.

    The coachshould m eet and exchange cordial greetings w ith the opposing coach to set the correct

    tone for the event before and after the contest.

    The coachshall not exert pressure on faculty m em bers to give students special consideration.

    The coachshall not scout opponents by any m eans other than those adopted by the league and/or

    state high school athletic association.
