Better get your tickets while you can to this celestial celebrity event that hopes to land a knockout punch in

the fight against cancer. VIP tickets for this glamorously informative affair are nearly SOLD OUT! Fortunately, the beautiful Riviera Hotel offers plenty of room for general admission. “It has been incredibly heart-warming to see the outpouring of support from this community,” shared Caroldean Ross, founder of this inaugural event and its hosting charity organization, Charity Godmother. “Literally everybody who has been asked to do something has done it and more. All the sponsorship opportunities have been filled and the donated items in the gift bags are worth more than the price of admission!”

“Fight Like a Girl” will be held on October 3, 2014 from 5:00-9:00 p.m., at the Palm Springs Riviera Resort and Spa, 1600 N. Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. The event includes a breast cancer symposium and fashion show featuring TV-favorites Dr. Andrew Ordon and Dr. Ritu Chopra of “The Doctors” syndicated television show, along with specialists Dr. Laura Lee, Dr. Frederick Eko and Dr. Deborah Rubin. The Q&A-style format will be moderated by Allison Sachs, Community Outreach Director of the Luci Curci Cancer Center at Eisenhower Medical Center. John Callahan from TV’s “All My Children” &“General Hospital” will be the Master of Ceremonies, and five-time women’s World Boxing Champion, Mia St. John, will be on hand for a “meet and greet” and photo opportunities. The desert’s own

Tristan Milanovich will make her styling debut by producing the fashion show portion of the evening, and included in the celebrity model line-up will be Halstyn Houston, Gino Lamont, who will be accompanied by the biggest stars of the show, breast cancer survivors.

Other highlights of the evening include a shopping garden that features mini spa treatments, exhibitors, a gourmet dinner, fashion show, and a silent auction. Attendees are encouraged to bring a bottle of their favorite wine valued at $10 or more in exchange for two raffle tickets. Lucky winners take home a dozen bottles each! Guests will also be invited to enjoy a signature cocktail created especially for “Fight Like a Girl” entitled a “One-Two Punch”, a combination of vodka and a pink sugar free and caffeine free energy elixer, thanks to sponsors Crater Lake Vodka and Lotus Elixirs.

“It’s a combination of great things coming together into one fantastic event,” shared Ross. “This is the evolution of ‘Sleeping in for a Cure’, a project that has been building over the last 7 years. It’s no longer a sleep over; it’s a breast cancer awareness symposium.” Everything about the event will be geared to raising awareness and funds for the new local non-profit, The Charity Godmother. The theme includes honoring women and their achievements plus the color pink, as guests will be encouraged to dress accordingly. All proceeds raised at “Fight Like a Girl,” with a goal of $25,000, have been designated by Charity Godmother to directly support a team of ten women cyclists in the upcoming YSC (Young Survival Coalition supporting

breast cancer survivors) “Tour de Pink” on October 17-19. This fundraising race takes place over 3 days, with a course that starts in Paso Robles and ends in Point Mugu, CA. Details on this amazing event can be found at www.ysctourdepink.org.

Charity God Mother was sprung from the depths of personal heartache when a childhood friend of Caroldean’s was diagnosed with the silent killer, Pancreatic Cancer. She raised funds for her friend’s “Bucket List” wish and Charity God Mother was born. “I’ve been touched from almost every angle by cancer. I lost my sister to it, my mother is a survivor, and I lost my brother to Leukemia.” Leave it to Caroldean Ross to once again, turn lemons into a signature cocktail.

Tickets for the evening’s event are $75 for general admission, with a limited number of VIP tickets that include premium Fashion Show seating for $100. Purchase tickets online at www.charitygodmother.org or by calling (760) 678-8394.

Make it an overnight event at the Riviera and mention “Fight like a Girl” when making your reservation by September 20 to receive a special room rate of $149. Riviera Resort and Spa room reservations can be made by calling (855) 901-0002.

Astrella, daughter of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Donovan and namesake of a new company

operating in the Coachella Valley iHub, will launch her first product line, The Musical T’s™, at a special event October 9 at the Riviera Palm Springs.

Astrella Musical T’s™ emerge at the forefront of “the internet of things” — the marriage of the physical and digital. They combine, for the first time, art, fashion, music, and technology to create a premium, multifaceted clothing experience. Each T-shirt, made with 100% organic fabrics in Astrella’s hometown of Los Angeles, reimagines iconic album artwork and enables consumers to download the albums they’re wearing and engage in an online community. The connection between fashion and music is realized through the proprietary digital link attached to each garment. The line includes T-shirts featuring the designer’s favorite jazz and blues albums — such as Miles Davis’s Blue Moods, Thelonious Monk’s The Unique Thelonious Monk, John Lee Hooker’s Country Blues, Billie Holiday’s All or Nothing at All and John Coltrane’s Lush Life — as well as classic and popular rock albums, including Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, The Who, Queen, Spencer Davis Group, The Vandals, Ravi Shankar, and many more.

“I am very excited to launch my line of luxury tees,” Astrella says. “This clothing line represents my lifelong pursuit of fashion, music, artistic design, and philanthropy. By securely offering the digital recordings associated with the album artwork directly to the consumer, we are introducing an experience that truly separates my line from any other brand.”

After purchasing a T-shirt, the consumer can instantly stream and/or download the associated album tracks with no additional fee and enjoy a musical experience online, where they can find exclusive memorabilia from the record, including videos, photos, memorabilia, and interviews. The content is available exclusively to those who purchase the T-shirts.

Astrella operates in the Coachella Valley iHub, a business incubator managed by the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership that focuses on businesses in the high-tech, digital media, healthcare, and renewable energy industries. “Astrella, the person and the company, moved to Palm Springs from the Majorca, Spain, because they deemed this to be the best place to launch a product line that fuses technology with art,” says Joe Wallace, managing director of the Coachella Valley iHub. “The fusion of art and technology is the source of nearly all game-changing product offerings, and the iHub is pleased that Astrella has chosen to pursue their enterprise here.”

Living Desert. “It’s always a pleasure to showcase the babies born here at the zoo in an interactive manner.”

The African Crested porcupine is one of Africa’s largest rodents. Adults grow up to 29 inches long and weigh anywhere from 18 to 51 pounds. They are vegetarians, feeding on wild roots, bulbs, berries and other plants. In cultivated areas they eat groundnuts, potatoes, pumpkins, melons and maize. Their only predators are large carnivores.

The quills on the neck and back are black and white and the tips of the tail quills can range up to 20 inches long. They make a rattling sound when the porcupine feels threatened. It is called a crested porcupine because some quills can be erected into a crest, which starts at the top of the head and extends to the shoulder.

legs that help them sprint after their prey, along with their usual airborne hunting tactics. This ability allows Burrowing Owls to be exceptionally adept at hunting. They are one of the few species of owls that hunt during the day and have an incredibly varied diet. Burrowing Owls are only about 10 inches tall with a wingspan approximately double their height.

In addition, a female Ringtail cub was born on June 22. Ringtail Cacomistle are squirrel-sized animals related to the raccoon, with a long and fluffy, black and white tail. Native to the desert, they range from 25 to 30 inches long, half of that attributed to the tail, and weigh about two pounds. Nocturnal and omnivorous, they prefer rodents, birds and lizards, but also will eat plants and berries. Once trapped for fur, these animals are now protected by law in California and can live from six to

Coyote StageWorks, an award-winning Actors’ Equity professional theater company, is pleased to

announce its schedule of performances for 2015. The season will include the Company’s signature one-night-only benefit and a full production of a smash comedy hit, presented at the brand new, state-of-the-art Helene Galen Performing Arts Center at Rancho Mirage High School.

Twice voted “Best Live Theater” by Desert Magazine in 2013 and 2014, Coyote StageWorks was presented with fifteen Desert Star Awards by the Desert Theatre League in 2013, and has received 39 nominations for its 2014 season. The Desert Star Awards will be given out on October 5, 2014.

For its annual benefit gala, Coyote StageWorks will present “Side By Side By Sondheim.” Pending rights approval, a star-studded cast will present the classic musical revue for a single performance on Saturday, January 17. Tickets for the benefit are $75 and $125 per person for performance only; $250 per person ticket includes VIP cast reception following performance.

The most talked about comedy of the year, “Buyer & Cellar” will be presented for nine performances beginning March 27. An outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs, the show’s initial run in New York has won multiple awards for best solo show and performance. Ticket for matinees are $45 – $55 per person, and evening performances are $50 – $60 per person.

“It was a huge coup for our young company to obtain the rights to the hysterical ‘Buyer & Cellar’ while it was still playing Off-Broadway,” exclaimed Chuck Yates, Founding Artistic Director of Coyote StageWorks. “We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and the community for continuing to support high-quality theater in the Coachella Valley, and are enthusiastic about our sixth season in our beautiful new home!”

The change in venue for the 2014-2015 season came about as the result of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s realignment plans for the Annenberg Theater. Coyote StageWorks was abruptly informed at the beginning of July that it would no longer be able to rent the theater for its productions. “We are thrilled to have landed in this beautiful, state-of-the-art facility,” explained Yates. “I attended a performing arts high school, so I am extremely excited about the mentoring opportunities with the students. I also know from personal experience how an important program like this can change the course of one’s life.”

Coyote StageWorks is a nonprofit, 501(c)

iii company dedicated to advancing theatre as a vital art form in the desert communities of the Coachella Valley. It is their mission to provide a forum for thought-provoking, entertaining, and culturally significant works in an environment that nurtures the creativity of the individual and the enrichment of the community.

For more information about Coyote StageWorks and its 2015 season, please visit coyotestageworks.org. Group sales: 760-318-0024. To purchase individual tickets or subscriptions, call 760-202-6482 or visit hgpac.org.

About the shows:Side By Side By Sondheim (Pending

rights approval)Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 6:30 pmThe genius of Broadway’s most innovative

and influential artist is at the center of this tribute to composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. This dazzling array of some of his best-known songs features numbers from landmark shows that revolutionized musical theatre. Also included are classics written with legends such as Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne, and Richard Rodgers.

Buyer & CellarMarch 27 through April 5Inspired by Barbra Streisand’s “My

Passion for Design,” “Buyer & Cellar” is part truth, part fiction. The facts? Streisand has a shopping mall in the basement of her Malibu home, featuring a doll shop, an antique clothing store and a sweets shop, complete with a frozen yogurt machine, as detailed in her 2010 book. Playwright Jonathan Tolins takes the wackiness a step further as he imagines a man who is hired to work in the mall…with Babs as his only customer. The one-man show tells the story of Alex More, a struggling Los Angeles actor who takes a gig working in the basement mall, and develops an unlikely and hilarious friendship with Streisand.

Rapper and hip-hop producer Warren G will take the stage on October 11th. Warren G is well known for his debut hit single “Regulate,” a duet with Nate Dogg that was released on his the triple platinum album Regulate …G Funk Era. “This DJ” was his second Top 10 hit single. G-funk describes Warren G’s style to a T. His music is laid back, chill and confident. (warreng.org)

On November 1st, Day of the Dead brings the rhythm of reggae to the Date Shed with Fortunate youth, The Expanders and Big Mountain. “Fortunate Youth is a collaboration of South Bay reggae stand-outs. Rising from various bands, they’ve created a phenomenal 6-piece masterpiece bringing more fire to the stage than ever before. Combining rootsy vibes and unique bass lines united with multiple harmonies, boisterous guitar solos, and heavy keys separates Fortunate Youth from every other mainstream reggae band.” (www.fortunatemusic.com) Their 2013 release “It’s All a Jam” made the #1 position on Billboard Raggae Charts and earned positions on numerous other charts.

The tempo gets a little speedier on November 7th with California-born pop-punk band Lagwagon. Earning the reputation as one of the most influential punk bands of the 90’s, the guys in Lagwagon were pioneers in creating the now-famous “Fat

music is also important to Omar which is why he is a member of a record pool that gives him access to all the current music every month. Spending countless hours sorting through music and organizing it on his lap top is part of the job admits Omar.

After two decades of performing in clubs and at mobile gigs, Omar has recently decided to team up with his partner Will Durazo to form - Desert Empire Official DJs. The pair has been busy branding the company for the past year spinning gigs ranging from 1,400 people down to small backyard parties for 45. Besides the usual country club, wedding, or Quinceña, you can sometimes catch them sitting in as guest DJs at the Blue Bar inside Spotlight 29 Casino.

Music has been in his blood for as long as he can remember. As a child, DJ Omar would drum along

to any music he heard by tapping his hands and feet. Before he began playing around behind a mixing board and speakers, Omar started teaching himself how to play the drums at age 10; “I have played drums since middle school. I’m pretty good on a drum set and can play many styles like Jazz, Rock & Latin,” explains Omar.

The Indio native started DJing when he was 17. Determined to get into the night clubs to see the DJs play, Omar did not let his age stop him; “I remember my first summer after graduating high school, a friend of mine was a DJ at a local club here in Indio. He knew that I had an interest in being a DJ and although I was not 18 at the time, I got in one night and he saw me and asked if I would like to spin? That started it all for me!”

Omar began to develop his own style while learning how to interact with the dance floor in front of him. His ability to read a crowd and mix things up in addition to his MC skills are just a few things that set Omar apart from other DJs. He describes how he relies on his diversity when playing to different age groups; “I like to think that I can fulfill any request my customers’ ask for when it comes to music. In contrast to the Hip Hop/Top 40 style music I play at a lot of my parties, I grew up listening to everything from Spanish music to Classical and Tony Bennett. I also listen to a lot of Metallica and Alice in Chains in my car,” emphasizes Omar. Keeping up with the new

Blasting Echo. This band is not only favored by many for its music and passionate performances, but for the caliber of its members as well. Josh Heinz, vocalist and lead guitarist, along with his talented band of blasters are the symbol of the musicians who have no choice but to produce the music that pumps his/her blood no matter what the cost. Many have fallen from the calling, prey to the strain of the circus juggle between creating, playing with the band and the ever dreadful day job. It is what separates the hobbyist from the fully invested. After all these years, Josh Heinz has proved himself as a card carrying member of local rock royalty, having paid his dues in full and then some.

The band ingredients: Linda Heinz - Josh’s graceful, intelligent but by no means any less of a badass rocker wife on keyboard and backing vocals, Armando Flores - an absolute rhythm monster behind the drums and backing vocals, and Laramie Eve - by far the best female bassist you will ever see, hear and love. Blasting Echo, all of whom have children in their lives affected by autism, are the generators that have brought the Annual Concert for Autism to success as it approaches its 7th year.

The End of Summer Ritual starts at 8:30 at The Hood Bar and Pizza in Palm Desert this Friday, September 26th. This is a free show. thehoodbar.com

Sunday, September 28th at Plan B Live Entertainment & Cocktails: 32025 Monterey Avenue, 1000 Palms (Where Monterey and Ramon Road connect). (760) 343-2115. Weaver will perform at approximately 7 PM and will be joined by local artists, including the popular local band, Pocket Yellow.

In their early years, Half Astro opened for legendary punk acts such as Adolescents, The Dickies, Agent Orange, and TSOL. Their song “Cellular” is featured on Tony Hawk’s “RIDE” video game. A powerful rock vocalist and front man who studied music at The Music Institute in Los Angeles will bear no semblance whatsoever to this or any other project he has ever done before. It would be accurate to say that Lienau will very literally, not be himself.

Leinau will address his audience, sans guitar, from behind a keyboard and behind a mask as Herbert. From the embodiment of what would appear to be an old timey, saloon/parlor piano man, dark and ominous tunes, with orchestrated samples will produce both original and cover songs that are sure to exploit the far reaches of this incredible artist’s imagination along with the listener’s comfort zone. You will not want to miss this first ever debut of Herbert.

Atala: Described by Zach Huskey as “the godheads of high desert heavy”, the band has a more humble self-appraisal. They describe themselves as “a band trying to deliver a message of peace through positivity, creating a unique heavy sound meant to help reach higher states of mind.” The band consists of John Chavarria on bass, Jeff Tedtaotao on drums and Kyle Stratton on guitar and vocals. Fresh from recording their album with the world renowned Scott Reeder, Atala is making their low desert debut at the End of Summer Ritual, and I am confident, attendees will find room at the top of their collection for this band. Aside from being hand-picked from one of the forefathers of Desert Rock, their video, “Broken Glass”, exudes all the necessary elements of passionate, heavy rock with a front man who can seriously sing. The genre is flooded with screamers - vocalists who shout every lyric and every line to push the dark and the angry element. Stratton has a very Godsmack/Slipknot-esque vocalist/screamer ability to blend both styles with instinctive taste and dynamics that make an emotional connection to well written songs.

Blasting echo: Headlining the event, is the award winning original rock band,

beat that obstacle now.’ It’s been a lot like that. Yeah, we might end up vomiting in a parking lot in Brooklyn, but we’re still here. I like that.”

Weaver has been the focus of short films, documentaries, and received some powerful tastemaker plaudits. He’s been the subject of the award-winning short film Spirit First, chronicling Weaver’s journey, and ADDvocate Film’s String Theory: A Levi Weaver Documentary. In addition, he’s also been featured in both Map the Music and the upcoming Map the Music: 2. Onetime tourmate, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Imogen Heap, raves about his live show. Performing Songwriter Magazine calls Weaver a “musical wunderkind with grand ambitions.” After one performance Citybeat Cincinnati concluded: “Weaver was a one-man work of art.”

You will have two opportunities to enjoy the amazing, live performance of this artist this weekend.

Saturday, September 27th at Schmidy’s Tavern, Weaver will be joined by local award winning and nominated artists Caxton and Giselle Woo. Reservations and early arrival are recommended. Schmidy’s Tavern is

an album to 3-4 days in the studio because it was out of our pocket. Now, because we’ve been at it so long, we are a more familiar name in the market. A lot of our stuff is sold overseas. The changes have made things a lot easier when someone gets a hold of us and says, ‘We’re from Norway; how much for the album?’

Erica: Now I have people calling me asking ME how to do it!

Zach: There’s people that have been on labels all their life who are doing it themselves now. They call and ask, ‘How’d you do the printing? Where’s the mastering done? I won’t mention any names, but these are some well-known people. I always tell them, ‘Don’t ask me, I just write the music’ and hand the phone to Erica. I’m a great delegator (he grins). We’ve produced 10 albums in 20 years, all CDs. We made our first 12” vinyl, ‘20 Years Underground’. You might call it our non-greatest ever hits.

Friday night, Dali’s Llama will be showcasing some new, unrecorded songs along with picks from their overwhelming arsenal. “I’m really sick of this ‘Stoner Rock’ thing. I don’t know how Desert Rock turned into Stoner Rock. It was never meant to be that way,”shared Zach. “I really concentrated on the songwriting aspect with the new songs: texture, original topics, themes and structure. I don’t hear a lot of ‘original’ music out there. Nobody’s mixing the heavy desert rock with a ‘My Bloody Valentine’ keyboard on top. Nobody’s mixing The Cure with Black Sabbath, and that’s the goal with the new music.” This will be the first Dali’s Llama show in the valley in quite some time. This is their first show with re-introducing Joe Dillon, a key factor in Zach reaching his new songwriting goal. “This will be pure keys (no samples) working with the guitar. The bass and drums over the top like with the band ‘Killing Joke.’ It won’t be ‘garage band’ either. It’s more sophisticated in a way but not too serious. It’s new for us and I don’t hear anybody else doing it.” When Zach Huskey says new, he means NEW. For Zach the word “Retro” is a negative word meaning, “Dude, that’s already been done before.” You can bet the bank that new music from Dali’s Llama will be a new listening experience. “I feel like I’m getting old,” Zach joked. “I approach our new music like it’s going to be the last Dali’s Llama album ever and I want it to be the best.”

Herb Lienau: The guitarist Zach Huskey dubs as the “most underrated, amazing guitar player around” has spent the last several months reinventing himself...COMPLETELY. Well known as the founder and originator of the mid 80’s, early punk rock band Half Astro, Herb Lienau, has long been the inspiration for many musicians and their successful projects over the years.

world renowned touring partner, Imogen Heap, cannot say enough about him.

“Levi won a competition to support me in Birmingham, UK. He was so fantastic that he sold all of his CDs and took twice as many mail orders. The crowd really warmed to him (as did I), so I took him on my US tour. He opened the show beautifully. He went down a storm, and I’m excited for what lies ahead in Levi’s world” IMOGEN HEAP, GRAMMY AWARD WINNER

“Songwriting, for me, is like painting,” explains Weaver, who went to school to study baseball play-by-play announcing. “I think about every word, revisit every melody, painstakingly pore over the details. With play-by-play, it’s like freestyle. It’s verbal acrobatics, trying to keep up with what you’re seeing happen at the speed of world-class athletes.” Weaver has released two full-length albums, two EPs, and two live albums. One of his most profound artistic assets is how Weaver’s live show complements his recorded music. His studio work is often stately and beautifully layered, but live, he re-imagines these creations as a one-man band, intriguing audiences with loop pedals, dual mics, and a violin bow, which he occasionally applies to his guitar strings. “As far as the loops go, it was honestly just a matter of necessity,” he explains. “I had just moved to England and didn’t know any other musicians, but I’d been asked to play a show and they wanted to hear ‘Which Drink?’. It’s nice to have requests, but that song is just the same five chords on repeat. Recording it, I’d been able to add and subtract, but it was going to be really boring and disappointing if I just played it on a guitar. I learned to loop the chords so I could at least play the lead line. From there, it just became a matter of having ideas — ‘What about my voice?’, ‘What about some effects?’, ‘What about multiple channels?’ — and figuring out how to do them.”

A tireless troubadour, Weaver has averaged 200 shows a year, often covering upwards of 50,000 miles in travel — and now his wife, their two small children, and their dog have all joined him on tour. “Having them out with me makes me feel like a millionaire, because if I had a million dollars, this is how I’d spend it,” he observes. That said, being out on the road, all-in, does present its own set of challenges. “This way I’m not looking at an adorable picture of my child in a penguin costume wishing I was there.” As his bio reads, “It’s a lot like a relationship within a relationship, actually. It will be awful sometimes, but it’s worth it. ‘You are, for me. I am, for you. Whatever circumstance happens, we’re in this together.’ Going through those things reminds you how committed you really are. ‘Well, that didn’t stop us. We know we can

If you’re looking to have a nice easy listening experience, this is not your show. If you are hoping to rock out

to standard issue heavy metal, pop-punk or rock and roll, you’ll need to find another venue. But if you are passionate about heavy music that thrives on authenticity with musicianship that will spin your ears, peel your face off, and challenge your mind, then there is nowhere else you could possibly want to be. Only at the Hood Bar and Pizza, will you come face to face with the forefathers (and mother) of Desert Rock, who 20 years later, are still creating new music and still striving for excellence on a level most fear to imagine. Dali’s Llama and their hand-picked, crew of road tested shredders will push your comfort zone and blow your mind at their “End of Summer Ritual”.

Dali’s Llama: Dali’s Llama has been producing some of the desert’s heaviest, grittiest collection of the most nakedly honest and raw rock and roll since before the early incarnation of generator parties. Chronically overlooked by locals, and worshiped by music lovers in Germany, Norway and the heartier parts of Europe, Dali’s Llama founders and co-creators, Erica and Zach Huskey, are still passionately at it after more than 2 decades of creative tenacity. With integrity and determination, they have been blazing the DIY trail on principle, long before the changing, over-saturated music industry made it a necessity.

Erica: When we started out there was no internet phone directory. We were writing down addresses from the back of magazines.

Zach: There weren’t a lot of outlets to get your music out there. There were only the major labels and few independent labels at the time. We were one of the only bands down here that had a CD out. Everything was on 2” tape just like the 70’s. It was expensive. We limited time spent on

Take what assumptions you may have about the “typical” Nashville artist and throw them in the

incinerator. The depth of music and talent in that music city is so gravely unrepresented on the commercial feed we receive here in California, that it’s criminal. But that is about to change. This weekend, a troubadour, in the purest sense of the word, will be making a couple of stops here in the Coachella Valley that will leave you questioning the intelligence of the corporate music industry (or perhaps their assumption of ours).

Levi Weaver, a post-folk, alternative rock, genre leaping “weaver” of lyric, melody, will most assuredly capture your stunned, awed and hungry-for-authentic-music-heart. While his level of talent is a bit surreal, his messages and communication skills are expertly down to earth. Simply put, he will ring your heart out like a sponge and you will love him for it. Audience reaction to Weaver’s one-man-octopus-band approach has been quite stellar. “I do feed off the audience, but I’m not sure I know how to describe it,” he says. “I feel an audience as an organism, almost; everyone has a unique combination that I try to unlock. When I get it right, it’s a great show. Sometimes, I have to recognize I just don’t have the key for that lock that night — some organisms want to dance.” The fact that he performs solo is quickly lost in the amount of pleasing sonic and lyrical orchestration he masters through a few bits of technology, pure skill and ingenuity. His former collaborator, and

JACk WhiTetwo excellent albums, Broken Toy Soldiers in 2006 and Consolers Of The Lonely in 2008.

As if that wasn’t enough, White started a third project, Dead Weather. Relying on Jack Lawrence for bass, he enlisted Queens Of The Stone Age keyboard player Dean Fertita and Kills vocalist, Alison Mosshart. For this project, White stayed behind the drum kit and sang. They released two albums, Horehound in 2009 and Sea Of Cowards in 2010.

In the middle of all this, he and Meg released the White Stripes final effort, Icky Thump in 2007. Their tour was aborted when Meg began to suffer acute anxiety. The album won a Grammy, but it was the end of the White Stripes. (They officially called it quits in 2011).

By 2012, Jack White had become the consummate entrepreneur. He had a record label, recording studio and record store under the Third Man umbrella. He continues to have an upholstery workshop on his Nashville property. He is also a taxidermy enthusiast. All of his endeavors are color coded, red white and black for the White Stripes, Third Man Records is yellow, black, red and blue, even when he began his upholstery business back in Detroit, everything was yellow and black.

When he launched his solo career in 2012, suddenly everything was blue. Blunderbuss arrived in the Spring of that year. Of course it topped the charts and received rave reviews. White went on tour with two backing bands, the all-female Peacocks, and the all-male Buzzards.

Now White is back with his second solo effort, “Lazaretto.” The album opens with the one-two punch of “Three Women” and “Lazaretto.” “Three Women” is anchored by spooky Hammond B3 and a stop-start kick drum rhythm. White easily slips into the skin of a cyber-lothario. “I got three women red, blonde and brunette/it took a digital photo to pick which one I like.” Thick slabs of staccato riff-age crest atop Hammond and harmonica fills that walk a knife’s edge between audacious and annoying.

The title track weaves fat stacks of reverb and squeal-y licks through a tapestry of sawing violin and a punishing backbeat. In the 16th century a lazaretto was actually a quarantine for lepers, but White’s sequestration is more emotional than physical. “Quarantined on the Isle Of Man, and I’m trying to escape any way I can.”

Jack White’s affinity for Country music is evident on a couple of tracks, “Temporary Ground” and “Entitlement.” On the former, White is Gram Parsons to (Peacock fiddler) Lillie Mae Rische’s Emmylou Harris. Her swooping fiddle lines connect to tinkly piano notes and swirling pedal steel, accentuating their sweet vocal blend.

The latter is a brittle critique of society’s collective self-involvement . Over subdued acoustic guitar, high lonesome pedal steel, saloon piano, coruscated mandolin and sparkling harp, White takes aim at our 21st

They became a couple and Meg began to play drums. Her primitive style inspired White to form a two piece with her and the White Stripes was born. Once they married, White, rather unconventionally, took Meg White’s surname as his own.

Their first single was independently released in February, 1998. Their self-titled album arrived in the summer of 1999 on the Sympathy For The Record Industry label: A supersonic blend of Blues, Garage Rock and Punk, it garnered good reviews. From the beginning, Jack White tried to shroud the duo in mystique, insisting they were siblings, (even after they divorced in 2000).

Their sophomore effort, De Stijl (Dutch for “the style”), was recorded in the Whites’ living room and released in 2000. It is now considered a cult classic. But the duo really broke through critically and commercially on their third effort, White Blood Cells.

Arriving in the summer of 2001, the album peaked at #61 on the Billboard Top 200, and reached #55 on the British charts. White Stripes signed with a major label, V2, and their inventive videos went into heavy rotation on MTV. (Back when it was still a music channel).

Their fourth and fifth albums, 2003’s Elephant and 2005’s Get Behind Me Satan, cemented the band’s superstar status. The former was recorded in 2 weeks in England on antiquated, analog equipment. Receiving unanimous critical acclaim, it made a home in the Top 10 and went double platinum in England. The latter broadened the band’s sonic palette, adding piano and marimba to the mix. They also won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album.

By now Jack White was remarried to model Karen Ellson. He also began collaborating with other musicians. He produced Loretta Lynn’s 2004 album, Van Lear Rose, and began a side project with Detroit Power Pop musician, Brendan Benson. Recruiting Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, (rhythm section for Detroit Garage rockers, the Greenhornes), they became the Raconteurs. They released

If it were possible for Willy Wonka and Edward Scissorhands to create a love child, his name would be Jack White.

As eccentric and creative as Wonka and as reticent and enigmatic as Scissorhands, Jack White has carved out his very own Rock & Roll empire.

Jack White was born John Anthony Gillis, the youngest of ten children, in Detroit, Michigan. He showed an early affinity for music and began playing drums at age six. As he got older he picked up more instruments, discarded by older siblings. Pink Floyd, the Door and Led Zeppelin nourished him during his grammar school days, but during his teenage years, he subsisted on a steady diet of the Blues.

When it became time to learn a trade, White became a furniture upholsterer. He had a three year apprenticeship with Ben Muldoon, whom he credits with exposing him to Punk Rock. Not only did he open his own repair shop, Third Man Upholstery, his first band was The Upholsterers, White on guitar, Muldoon on drums. They recorded two self-released albums.

By the mid ‘90s, White was a lanky presence in the insular Detroit music scene. He landed his first professional gig, as a drummer in Goober & The Peas. Thereafter, he hopscotched from band to band. He also met Meg White.

century sense of privilege… “There are children today who are lied to, they’re told the world is rightfully theirs/They can have what they want, whenever they want, they take like Caesar and nobody cares.”

The album’s stand-out tracks are “Would You Fight For Me,” “Just One Drink” and “Alone In My Home.” The piano driven “Would You Fight…” is cloaked in Southern Gothic menace. Banshee backing vocals, astringent guitar licks and pin-prick percussion underscore White’s invitation to be “the caretaker of sin to my abandoned and malignant heart.”

Opposites kind of attract on the rollicking “Just One Drink.” White sidles up to the object of his affection over a woozy fiddle, tack piano and a pounding beat. His well-lubricated entreaties fall flat… “I love you, But Honey, why don’t you love me?”

Finally “Alone In My Home” is piloted by sprightly piano flourishes that recall Elvis Costello’s “Accidents Will Happen” and mandolin tones that echo Led Zeppelin’s epochal “Tangerine.” It’s all woe-is-me for sad-sack Jack…”These stones that are thrown against my bones break-through/But they hurt less as time goes by.”

Not everything here works. The instrumental (and first single), “High Stepper,” is a frenetic combination of air raid-keys and hair-pin guitar curves. White seems more intent on demonstrating his effects rig than creating a melody.

“That Black Bat Licorice” is not so much a song, as it is a sound collage. Buzz-saw guitar, sweeping violin runs and an odd reggae rhythm feel like a collection of tics and gestures.

The album closes with “Want And Able.” Jaunty but bare-boned, consisting of piano, acoustic guitar and vocals. White obliquely rails against the status quo and social convention. “Who is the who that is telling who what to do? Being able is to freedom what wanting is to cruel/It’s hard to tell it seems, which one of them’s the fool. Is freedom a gift you give to the ones that say I love you?” (Huh?)

Despite his massive critical and commercial success, Jack White continues to view himself as an outlier. Perhaps his alienation fuels his creativity. His solo efforts have allowed him to explore new musical territories. Maybe now he can relax a little.

by Janet McaFeePET PLACEHolly, a lovely Greyhound/Whippet/

Chihuahua mix dog, bolted from her La Quinta home during the torrential rain

storm that hit our Valley on September 8. Holly was wearing an ID tag and is microchipped, the two most important things you can do to ensure a safe return. She weighs approximately 30 pounds, and is cream colored with large pointed ears. There is a reward offered for her safe return. Holly is a bit skittish, so please notify owners Deana at (760) 574-5985 or Daniel at (619) 743-2314.

Holly went missing near John Adams Elementary School, near the streets of Springtime Way and Summer View. Animals can easily become disorientated and bolt during a severe storm. It is possible Holly traveled to another city, or was taken in a car to another location.

Just as we were going to press, Holly’s owner learned from a city worker that a deceased dog resembling Holly was picked up in La Quinta street shortly after the September flooding. We are not certain this dog is Holly, and the deceased dog was not wearing a collar. Holly’s owners are devastated, but asked me to go ahead and tell her story on the chance Holly could still be out there, and with the hope of helping other missing animals.

Have you ever had a beloved cat or dog go missing? Many years ago, my family’s Australian Shepherd dog, Caesar, went missing from our back

your home by car and on foot. Call his name loudly as your pet could be in someone’s back yard. Search in the morning or at night when there is less noise. Check vacant homes, backyards, schools, and under cars. Cats can sometimes hide under cars or under the hood of a car.

CHECK LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTErSGo in person to your local public shelter since

you are the best one to recognize your pet. All shelters check for microchips and ID tags. Return to the shelter every few days. A stray animal can turn up in a shelter weeks later. Check shelters within a 50 mile radius in case he was picked up by someone traveling. Look in the kennels, search the “Found” book, the “Dead” book, and fill out a lost report at the front desk.

CHECK PETHArBOr.COM, CrAIGSLIST, AND FIDOFINDEr.COM

Check Craigslist for “FOUND” animals. Be sure to check the section for “animals for sale”, in case someone picked up your animal and is trying to sell it for profit.

Here are some things you can do to find Fluffy or Fido should they go missing.

CrEATE A FLyErBoiler plates to make flyers with your dog’s

photo can be found on www.bestfriends.org or www.petbond.com . It will help if there is a reward. Put up flyers on local bulletin boards including PetCo, Starbucks, supermarkets, vet clinics, and shelters. Pass out flyers to postal workers, gardeners, utility workers, security guards, and others who spend time outside in your community.

MAKE SIGNSSigns can be posted on telephone posts, at dog

parks, and at intersections controlled by traffic lights. Make big, colorful, eye catching signs. Exercise caution when someone calls seeking the reward money as unscrupulous people may try to scam money for animals they do not have.

pinoT envy WAy DoWn unDerMan!—there’s some really tasty

and reasonably priced Pinot Noir coming out of a small country

that has recently made a huge mark on yet another wine: Sauvignon Blanc.

The wide world of wine just gets better and better.

We know the famed Red Burgundy from the vineyards in France is almost exclusively made from the Pinot Noir grape. Goodness!—they set the bar for the world to measure up and winemakers everywhere refer to their Pinot either as being similar or dis-similar, but their homage is always to big papa François.

We’ve always heard Paris is France’s head, Champagne its soul, but Burgundy is the belly. And before the myriad of Michelin stars were awarded to restaurants along Route Nacionale 7 from Dijon to Lyon—even before France became Christian, Bourgogne was famous for its red wine.

For wine lovers full of Pinot envy, those classic Red Burgundies, be it Romanée-conti, richebourg, or La Tâche, are on the bucket list. Absolutely haunting flavors will waft into your memories.

In the U.S., California and Oregon have made wine history with stellar “new world” variety of Pinot Noir. In the Sunshine State, Pinot vineyards in Mendocino’s Anderson Valley, Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, Los Carneros, Monterey’s Santa Lucia Highlands, and Santa Barbara’s beautiful SantaYnez Valley especially produce world class wine. A panoply of brilliant rich cherry and berry flavors with cola, flowers, and earthiness.

Now the wines may not particularly be on a bucket list—they’re not over $1500 a bottle as the Burgundians! We can actually afford these California wines on occasions. They are the treat of the Thanksgiving table served by the happy host and/or brought over by the celebratory guests. Cheers!

And no one is leaving off Oregon on this pinot parade. Pinot Noir from the Willamette [Will-LAM-ette—not WILL-em-met]] Valley brings yet another delightful dimension to the Pinot profile. French in terroir style, “new world” in fecund terroir dimensions.

If you had the power to force all Pinot lovers to drink only the wines from areas mentioned above—well no problem, they’d be kissing you forever and a day.

So why would we ever consider the new-Pinot-Kid-in-town ? Too late! The Kiwi Pinot has landed, and everybody loves him.

As mentioned above, the charming island nation of New Zealand is now known for its racy, bracing, and juicy Sauv Blanc. It’s on the wine map in stone. I don’t know how many people come by and pick out the Marlborough whites at Pavilions. (by the way—the 2013 N.Z. growing season was warmer than usual, so we’ll see a bit more tropical flavors in the wine.)

cranberry, with loamy earthy details of spice, tea and tobacco.”

And 89 points to 2013 Matua Marlbourough, under $15, “Fresh-crushed raspberry and cherry flavors are graceful, vibrant and juicy, with a touch of pine needle and black tea. Balanced.”

Our friends over at Total Wine and More, Palm Desert, offer N.Z. Pinots like Oyster Bay at $14, Stony Bay at $20, and Brancott Pinot Noir at $10, along with six others under $20.

Pavilions at rancho Mirage offers the Nobilo Pinot Noir Icon at $18. The winemaker notes: “The wine is dark ruby red. Spicy notes come to the fore immediately. Lifted aromas of raspberry, cherry, and blackberry. Rich fruitcake and spicy toasty oak flavors with fine tannins. The palate is generous and balanced with excellent length. 100% Pinot Noir.”

Now, the Kiwis have “heaps of good red wine—ay bro!” Translation: We’re now making Pinot Noir that can compete with the world. If you had to describe Kiwi Pinot—at a minimum, you’d be saying, “Complex and multi-faceted with remarkable freshness, vitality and purity.” And with the warming growing season, 2013 Kiwi Pinot will likely be a little fleshier, keeping Cal Pinot fans really interested.

As always, you CV Weekly vino readers get the scoop; you humble people are so wine savvy that it makes one want to put their your own wine-pairing dinner tonite! I know—you can barely hold in your exuberance & appetite .

Tasting such vivacious and complex Pinot only gets better when you realize great prices on these babes. Wine Spectator Magazine has given 90 points to the 2012 Murdoch James estates Martinborough that sells for under $20. “Vibrant and aromatic, white chocolate, raspberry coulis, and ripe black cherry flavors that are plushed and polished.”

89 points to 2012 Kim Crawford South Island, under $17, “A peppery, crisp expression of fresh raspberry, cherry and

As they say in Kiwi-land, “No dalmy plonk here, just cracker pinot—sweet as—bro!”

were beyond impressive! While we raved over each bite, we

enjoyed the live music coming from the adjacent room. When we arrived, noticing the duet performing, I had hoped we would receive a break from the cliché ambiance of Frank Sinatra and other crooners. We were in luck as the selections were mostly modern and appropriate for such a lively atmosphere. We had been swept away from the desert to a Hollywood hotspot from the moment we entered the foyer.

The meal was completed by an incredible

Mastro’s Steakhouse is once again back in the spotlight, having recently been voted,

“Best Steakhouse” by the Coachella Valley Weekly ‘Best Of’ Awards. Based on my past experiences, I would readily concur with these findings but just to be sure, I took the opportunity to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday at Mastro’s for a night we will not soon forget!

I can honestly say I have dined in every steakhouse in this valley open to the public. I have seen common trends and I have been underwhelmed when it comes to originality. On this recent visit, my expectations were far exceeded when our server, Daniel and the staff at Mastro’s took fine dining to a whole new level. From the moment we walked in the door to be greeted with warm smiles, to our goodbyes, we felt like celebrities dining in a Michelin rated restaurant!

Our server toured the menu, sharing with us some favorites while making suggestions without sounding like a corporate salesperson. We were genuinely engaged and our mouths were watering. We would begin with martinis. A signature Cosmopolitan, smoking with dry ice, arrived for my date and a Belvedere martini with large caper berries for myself. With the obligatory toast out of

the way, we were ready to enjoy a seafood tower complete with chunks of fresh crab with cocktail sauce, huge crab claws and jumbo prawns. Served on a silver tower with crushed ice and lemon, this appetizer was a work of art!

Following our starter, I enjoyed a rich lobster bisque while my date had a house salad. But the star of the show was the main course. Mastro’s is currently offering a full course meal which includes a starter, entrée with two sides, and dessert for $55. My girlfriend made this selection and her Filet Mignon was an impressive 8 ounces. I would also enjoy a steak, a very flavorful Kansas City Strip steak, or a bone in New York. The steaks were thick and seasoned to perfection. A perfect medium rare was achieved with my cut of beef. Our dialogue fell silent as we savored each bite of this incredible meal before us!

Our side dishes included creamy scalloped potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. The side dishes are generous enough to share and are also available in individual portions (comparable to a half order) for those like myself that cannot make up their mind. The vegetables were fresh and delicious. We could not decide whether our service or quality of food was superior. Both

desert plate presented to my girlfriend in celebration of her birthday. A trio of decadent chocolate espresso cake, cheesecake, and their famous Butter Cake. All were incredibly delicious but the Warm Butter Cake was ‘Oh My God’ insanely addicting with fresh whipped cream.

Mastro’s is without a doubt the best steakhouse in the desert. They have the most professional and courteous staff from the front of the house to the back. If you plan on impressing guests or celebrating an occasion, no one compares to Mastro’s in Palm Desert. Located at 73-405 El Paseo ste 120, they are open nightly from 4pm. is not without a few extremely vivid and bloody shock shots that jolt before one can look away. Even so, I liked the embedded ambiguity in the murky grey zone that quivers between right and wrong. And for that reason and Neeson’s tight performance this is my big screen pick of the week. Now playing.

NEW FOr THE HOME THEATEr:

THE ROVER

Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are gritty and mostly terrific in this incredibly tense and very watchable drama about a tough loner (Pearce) who wanders the remote and desolate towns of the outback a decade after the collapse of society. The plot centers on the theft of his care and a wounded thief (Pattinson) who is left behind forcing the two go to extreme lengths to hunt down the thieves and retrieve the invaluable vehicle. David Michod’s story (with Joel Edgerton) is as taught as his direction. Lionsgate. Blu-ray

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONESLiam Neeson’s back in fine form as

unlicensed private eye Matt Scudder hunting a particularly vicious killer. Writer director Scott Franks has a clear vision and masterly control over the story he’s putting on the screen.

Based on Lawrence Block’s genre thriller, Neeson’s ex NYPD Scudder is his most compelling role since the original TAKEN. Operating just beyond the law, Scudder reluctantly helps admitted dope dealer (Dan Stevens from “Downton Abbey”!) track down whoever brutally slaughtered his wife. Along the way, we discover this is not the first – or last – victim of the demented, sadistic killer or killers.

An old school murder mystery thriller with roots deep in classic film noir; this race against time in the back streets of NY

NEIGHBORS

Raunchy, rude and sometimes even funny, a doughy Seth Rogen and a buff Zac Effron lead the cast in a story about a young couple with a baby forced to live next door to an animal house fraternity. This R rated comedy is a kind of reboot, or perhaps a throwback (or is it an homage?) to the lewd teen comedies of decades past. Nick Stoller’s direction is adequate for the low brow material. I was surprised at the heartwarming scenes that struck me as an after-the-fact patronizing element to make the preceding material more palatable. Universal. Blu-ray.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION 3DWhat can be said about this nearly three

hour, supremely well-crafted, intentionally over-the-top epic giant robot battle that has already earned more than a billion bucks worldwide? Director Michael Bay’s fourth installment in this blockbuster franchise is silly and for fans of the series, obviously satisfying.

To be honest, there are some things I just don’t get; i.e., Kanye West, Justin Beiber and Transfomer movies. But then I am not the target demographic. And I don’t have a clue for whom this film was made.

However, the eye-popping effects of battling bots whether in China or Chicago is photorealistic and seamless. The Imax 3D sequences are as good as possible and on a 60 plus inch hi-def home theater system the images jump of the screen in crisp and perfect rendering. Production design is always top notch and the 3 hours of extras are watchable and for me more fascinating than the emotionally cool movie itself.

The plot seemed incidental and even boring when compared to the execution of the lavish and extended action sequences. And I didn’t really care about the fate of the earth after the two hour point but appreciated the nice turns by a villainous Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci and lead Mark Wahlberg as a concerned single dad for his pretty teen daughter, newcomer Nicola Peltz. (Personally, I kind of missed Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox.)

But the big payoff here is the inclusion of the Dinobots©. That was the one Transformer toy I liked and it was great to see them in all their awesome fury on the big -- and size matters here -- home screen. And in truly kick-ass 3D! Paramount. Blu-ray 3D.

Barbara Stanwyck, Johnny Carson and Katherine Hepburn are Hollywood legends. Their

respective biographers: Victoria Wilson, Henry Bushkin and Scott Berg, have each given part of themselves to share with readers the fantastic lives these showbiz icons lived. Each knows his and her subjects intimately.

Although Stanwyck, Carson and Hepburn have all passed away, there is still an opportunity to know them through these informative and detailed personal stories. Over the last few weeks while reviewing these books, I kept thinking how would Stanwyck, Carson and Hepburn consider their own lives. Might it be quite different from how they are depicted in these fine books. Biographers are able to give a big picture perspective, an overview of a life and the times that is often difficult for that individual to see while actually living it.

These dedicated authors, Wilson, Bushkin and Berg will be speaking at the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival in January and it will be great to hear what they have to say about their subjects and the challenge to write a quality biography.

If it is not enough to just hear about Hollywood royalty from biographers, the

Air Force. When he would come home on leave, his mother would get pregnant. York was the only boy and the middle child. One of his twin sisters died shortly after birth in 1947.

Early on, York showed a desire to entertain. In grammar school he was in “The Merchant of Venice.” It would be the first of many Shakespearian plays. York attended Oxford University and was in the Dramatic Society. He was in the Dundee Repertory and Olivier’s National Theatre.

Transitioning from theater to film, York had a role in Franco Zeffirelli’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” He met his wife, American photographer, Patricia McCallum during a photo shoot. They married in 1968 and remain married today. York has been making one or more movies a year since 1967! He has worked with the finest actors in the world.

York includes a useful index, which in itself is fun to scan since it’s such a who’s who of Hollywood. There are terrific pictures of the beautiful blond and blue eyed York at work, many of which were taken by his wife.

Accidentally on Purpose is a dense read. Certainly overwritten, but it’s like being locked in a car with York on a cross-country trip. If you don’t mind spending ordinary time with him talking the whole time, then the long trip doesn’t matter.

It’s impossible to read York’s story without hearing his distinctive, melodic voice. It is prominent right from the beginning. He writes with gentle humor and never has a bad thing to say about his costars or directors. So don’t expect any bombshells about himself or anybody else.

York goes into great detail about the events in his life. He even includes correspondence between friends, Hollywood directors and neighbors. I don’t think it especially adds to the narrative to include the polite back and forth letters regarding a barking dog.

However, these are often the moments that show York’s charm and personality. After

all, he is British. Although, he’s an American citizen now. It is hard to list his most popular films because there are so many. But I think it’s safe to say some favorites are “Cabaret,” “The Three Musketeers,” “The Four Musketeers,” and “Logan’s Run.” He is also known for the “Austin Powers” series of films. But Accidentally on Purpose was publish prior to those films. On a personal note, I believe there has never been a better D’Artagnan.

The title of York’s autobiography is unusually apropos. Overall, it is a memoir about a regular guy who finds his gift early and pursues it with purpose and then finds himself in an amazing career that seems to have happened by accident. He seems genuine and recognizes his good fortune.

His wife Pat York will also be speaking at the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival. Her book, Going Strong (Arcade Pub, 255 pages) is a collection of interviews and portraits of men and women 75 years or older who continue to live interesting lives. Filled with photographs, the first person stories shed light on the simple things that bring about longevity and maintain a quality life.

It may be that Accidentally on Purpose will someday be used as source material for a serious biographical book on Michael York the man and the actor. Accidentally on Purpose was written 23 years ago and perhaps York was too young and too close to the subject to really do himself justice.

* Rancho Mirage Writers Festival list of authors may be subject to change. For more information on the Festival contact the Rancho Mirage Library.

Writers Festival will also include a living Hollywood icon. Actor Michael York will be speaking during the Festival.* In his autobiography, Accidentally on Purpose (Simon and Schuster, 432 pages) York gives an exceptionally detailed account of his life and career through 1991.

Born March 27, 1942 in Buckinghamshire, England, York came into a world during the war. His father was an officer in the Royal

something that sounds worthwhile. A deviation of this is the sweetheart scam when someone befriends an elderly person. It could be a neighbor, aide…..or relative. They gain info on your accounts and or convince you to change your will to leave everything to them. This is a form of Elder Abuse and you should seek legal assistance.

The Lottery or Advanced Fee Scam occur when they try to get you to pay for something you did not order such as a lottery winning or even an inheritance. They say you won a large prize and you have to send money to cover the costs for taxes etc.

The Computer Virus Scam is where someone allegedly calls from Microsoft advising you that you have a virus and they can get rid of it. They have you log into a website that lets them control your computer. Then they steal your ID.

During the summer the Time-Share Scam “heats up”. As we age we do not always want to keep our time shares. Someone contacts you offering to sell your timeshare

The Grandparent Scam involves someone calling or emailing as an alleged relative/friend who may say he/she has just had a crisis in Europe and is contacting you for money to get back to the US. They beg you not to call their parents as they sob away. After you wire money they try to get more. Anyone can set up a phony email account to contact you and pretend to be a friend or relative IN NEED.

In the Jury Duty Scam someone calls pretending to be a court official who says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn’t show up for jury duty. Sometimes they even ask you for a credit card number so they can process the cancellation. If you give out any information …your identity has just been stolen!

A common homeowner scam is when someone drives up to your home and suggests high priced and needless repairs to your roof, decking or installing an alarm system. They again ask up front for money. You know the rest of the story.

During the tax season it is common to get fake emails for more information to process your federal income tax refund or an email or letter for unclaimed power ball prizes. Up front money is again required.

registered voters deciding this election. Given that Republicans represent 40.7% of voters for this seat as compared with Democrats at 36.6%, Mayes is considered the front runner.

The 56th district that was represented by Manny Perez is being contested by Coachella Mayor Eduardo Garcia (D) and Charles Bennett, Jr. (R). This district includes Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indio and unincorporated areas like Bermuda Dunes and Thousand Palms. Coachella Valley represents nearly 75% of the voters for this election. With 44% of the electorate registered as Democrats (Republicans 35%) and Garcia already having strong name recognition, it would be a major upset for Bennett to win.

While some may have forgotten, the State of California not only has a State Assembly but a State Senate. For the last few years, the Coachella Valley has not been represented in that legislative body. With new redrawn district lines, the Coachella Valley is now part of the 28th district that includes Corona, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta

and Temecula. The Coachella Valley represents 38% of the district’s voters with 42% registered as Republicans (Democrats 33%). Two Republicans, Chad Mayes and Bonnie Garcia are competing for this seat.

In the race for the U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Dr. Raul Ruiz (D) is being challenged by termed out Assemblyman Brian Nestande (R). Coachella Valley represents 52% of voters in this race. This congressional district is evenly split between Democrats (38%) and Republicans (39%) with Democrats considered to have the edge amongst Independents (18%) and other smaller parties (5%).

Locally, we have numerous city council, school board and public utility races. Cathedral City and La Quinta each are electing a Mayor and two new City Councilpersons while Indian Wells is electing two new councilpersons. Coachella and Palm Desert both have two council seats to fill while Indio has three incumbents and one challenger for their three seats.

If you want to vote by mail, you can register to receive a ballot at home by going to www.election.co.riverside.ca.us.

Early voting for the upcoming election that will be held on November 4th starts on October 6th via mail-in

ballots. Over the next few weeks, we will try to

help you get to know many of the people running for office here in the Coachella Valley.

Riverside County has 876,748 voters with Coachella Valley’s 142,735 or 16% of the County’s voters subdivided as follows: Cathedral City 18,524; Coachella 10,268; Desert Hot Springs 9,548; Indian Wells 2,726; Indio 28,971; La Quinta 17,962, Palm Desert 23,184; Palm Springs 22,569 and Rancho Mirage 8,983. We also have voters in unincorporated areas like Bermuda Dunes and Thousand Palms.

Most interestingly, independent voters are making up larger percentages of the electorate. As a whole, 17.4% of Coachella Valley voters are independents with 42.1% registered as Democrats, 37.1% Republicans and 4.3% registered with smaller political parties. The town with the highest percentage of Democratic voters is Coachella at 63% with Palm Springs second at 51%. Republicans control Indian Wells with 62% of the voters followed by La Quinta at 47%. Palm Desert and Rancho

Mirage have the largest percentages of independent voters at 18.3%.

Both of our State Assemblymen are seeking other political offices as they have been termed out of their Assembly seats. Brian Nestande (R) is challenging Dr. Raul Ruiz (D) for the U.S. House of Representatives while Manny Perez (D) is running for the City Council in Coachella.

The 42nd district that was represented by Brian Nestande (R) is being contested by Chad Mayes (R) and Karilee Hargrove (D). This district includes Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage locally as well as Corona, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Temecula. Coachella Valley represents 25% of

burned (three times the size of Anaheim) at the King Fire so far. Drought conditions have fuel moisture content near zero. The fire is consuming right through a half million gallons of fire retardant already dropped says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.”

Though Northern California is also in a drought, they have received far more rainfall than we have in Southern California. With less rain, we can expect far more severe fire behavior and spread than what they are experiencing.

Fall is officially here and the Santa Ana winds will certainly add to our threat. It’s important hillside residents understand our Ready, Set, Go (RSG) program initiated by the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

The RSG Program provides ways to assist you in surviving a wildfire. Are you ready? Create defensible space by clearing brush away from your home. Remove flammable materials from around your house. This includes patio furniture, firewood, decorations and anything else that could catch fire. Get Set. Back your vehicle into the driveway with the hood (front) facing

And with the meager hospitality that was offered and the bitter desert cold, Coffman had thought she had made a mistake by traveling to the unknown desert and yearned to return home with her son to more civilized surroundings. But in the morning she woke to the light of the sun against crisp blue skies, and the unveiling of what she had dreamed of with a 3-D view of the mighty San Jacinto, standing tall and gallant to greet her. It was at that moment when she fell in love with Palm Springs.

Coffman knew she had found her destiny, and now had to convince her husband that moving to the desert was the right thing to do. So she appealed to her husband’s desire to help the sick and suggested they open a sanatorium to do just that. And in the fall of 1909, Coffman moved her family to Palm Springs and opened The Desert Inn. The property was primitive to today’s standards; it was comprised of a grouping of tents at first, but Coffman’s hospitality prevailed. And in 1914, Coffman and her husband Harry, parted ways and he moved down valley to practice medicine and later moved to San Diego County. After their marriage had ended, Coffman decided to let the sanatorium part of The Desert Inn end as well, and no longer catered to the infirmed. She would finally have

The Palm Springs Art Museum welcomed students for a tour and art lesson. Students are brought vessels created at school and applied paint. The lesson focused on design based upon the LINKS exhibition opening next month.

Nellie Coffman first heard of our desert oasis back in 1897, while she was in the mountain village

of Idyllwild (then called Strawberry Valley), being sent there by her doctor to help cure a nasty cough. While she was resting, the woman who ran the boarding house that she was staying at, Mrs. Keene, talked about a place that she would go to in the winter to escape the cold of the mountains. Keene spoke of a place with endless sunny skies and grand mountains that seemed to rocket miles up from the earth. There were also healing hot springs to sooth body and soul. The place sounded like paradise. But it would be 9 years until Coffman would finally come to visit the place that she had fantasized about. In December of 1908 along with her son Earl, she travelled east from her home that she shared with her husband Dr. Harry Coffman and other son George Roberson ( from her previous husband who had passed away) in Santa Monica, and headed to the place that she had envisioned in her mind.

When she arrived, she was greeted with a sand storm, dusty roads and a pitch black night sky. The welcome wagon wasn’t really filled with glee when she got to the only game in town either, The Palm Springs Hotel, owned by Welwood Murray and his wife Elizabeth.

Last Thursday, September 18th from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, the 3rd Grade Class from Agua Caliente Elementary

School in Cathedral City took part in the First School Tour of the 2014 – 2015 School Year at the Palm Springs Art Museum for “Art Within Reach” Program.

the hotel she wanted and in the 1920’s, with the help of an investment by Tom O’Donnell, built up The Desert Inn making it a world class resort, catering this time to Hollywood stars, world travellers and sun seeking tourists.

Mother Coffman, as she had come to be known, reigned over The Desert Inn until her death in 1950. It was then sold to Hollywood actress Marion Davies who purchased the landmark for 2 million dollars, but she would only have it briefly, as she herself died several years later. The Desert Inn was later torn down to build the ever changing mall that tries

to grow on the location. Today it is again in transformation, and hopefully will materialize into something worthy of the Desert Inn that once stood there. What would Nellie Coffman and all the other pioneers think of Palm Springs today? I think they would be enormously proud of what it has become, and what it still has potential to be. It is their paradise in the sun realized.

ArIES (March 21-April 19): It’s no secret. The wealthy one percent of the population has been getting progressively wealthier. Meanwhile, the poor are becoming steadily poorer. I’m worried there is a metaphorically similar trend in your life. Am I right? If so, please do all you can to reverse it. Borrow energy from the rich and abundant parts of your life so as to lift up the neglected and underendowed parts. Here’s one example of how you could proceed: For a while, be less concerned with people who think you’re a star, and give more attention to those who accept and love your shadow side.

TAUrUS (April 20-May 20): “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job,” says Bill Gates, the world’s second-richest man, “because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” That’s good counsel for you right now, Taurus. You’d be wise to get in touch with your inner lazy bum. Let the slacker within you uncover the least stressful way to accomplish your difficult task. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, there is no need for you to suffer and strain as you deal with your dilemma.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you don’t identify and express your conscious desires, your unconscious desires will dominate your life. I will say that again in different language, because it’s crucial you understand the principle. You’ve got to be very clear about what you really want, and install a shining vision of what you really want at the core of your everyday life. If you don’t do that, you will end up being controlled by your habits and old programming. So be imperious, Gemini. Define your dearest, strongest longing, and be ruthlessly devoted to it.

CANCEr (June 21-July 22): Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was an influential French photographer, a pioneer of photojournalism who helped transform photography into an art form. In 1986 he was invited to Palermo, Sicily to accept a prize for his work. The hotel he stayed in seemed oddly familiar to him, although he didn’t understand why. It was only later he discovered that the hotel had been the place at which his mother and father stayed on their honeymoon. It was where he was conceived. I foresee a comparable development on the horizon for you, Cancerian: a return to origins, perhaps inadvertent; an evocative encounter with your roots; a reunification with an influence that helped make you who you are today.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): With expert execution, musician Ben Lee can play 15 notes per second on his violin. Superstar eater Pete Czerwinski needs just 34 seconds to devour a 12-inch pizza. When Jerry Miculek is holding his rifle, he can get off eight crack shots at four targets in a little more than one second. While upside-down, Aichi Ono is capable of doing 135 perfect head spins in a minute. I don’t expect you to be quite so lightning fast and utterly flawless as these people in the coming weeks, Leo, but I do think you will be unusually quick and skillful. For the foreseeable future, speed and efficiency are your specialties.

vIrGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): As the makeup artist for the film Dallas Buyers Club, Robin Mathews had a daunting task. During the 23 days of shooting, she had to constantly transform lead actors Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto so that they appeared either deathly ill or relatively healthy. Sometimes she had to switch them back and forth five times a day. She was so skillful in accomplishing this feat that she won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Her budget? A meager $250. The film was a shoestring indie production. I’m naming her your inspirational role model for the next few weeks, Virgo. I believe that you, too, can create magic without a wealth of resources.

LIBrA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “I am a seed about to break,” wrote Sylvia Plath in her poem “Three Women.” That’s how I see you right now, Libra. You

are teeming with the buoyant energy that throbs when a seed is ready to sprout. You have been biding your time, gathering the nourishment you need, waiting for the right circumstances to burst open with your new flavor. And now that nervous, hopeful, ecstatic moment is about to arrive. Be brave!

SCOrPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The English verb “cicurate” is defined as “to tame or domesticate” or “to make mild or innocuous.” But it once had an additional sense: “to reclaim from wildness.” It was derived from the Latin word cicurare, which meant “to bring back from madness, to draw out of the wilderness.” For your purposes, Scorpio, we will make cicurate your theme, but concentrate on these definitions: “to reclaim from wildness, to bring back from madness, to draw out of the wilderness.” In the coming weeks, you will be exploring rough, luxuriant areas of unknown territory. You will be wrangling with primitive, sometimes turbulent energy. I urge you to extract the raw vitality you find there, and harness it to serve your daily rhythm and your long-term goals.

SAGITTArIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “You can exert no influence if you are not susceptible to influence,” said psychologist Carl Jung. Extrapolating from that idea, we can hypothesize that the more willing and able you are to be influenced, the greater your influence might be. Let’s make this your key theme in the coming weeks. It will be an excellent time to increase your clout, wield more authority, and claim more of a say in the creation of your shared environments. For best results, you should open your mind, be very receptive, and listen well.

CAPrICOrN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Congratulations, Capricorn. Your current dilemmas are more useful and interesting than any that you have had for a long time. If you can even partially solve them, the changes you set in motion will improve your entire life, not just the circumstances they immediately affect. Of the several dividends you may reap, one of my favorites is this: You could liberate yourself from a messed-up kind of beauty and become available for a more soothing and delightful kind. Here’s another potential benefit: You may transform yourself in ways that will help you attract more useful and interesting dilemmas in the future.

AQUArIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Alan Moore is the British author who wrote the graphic novels Watchmen and V for Vendetta. He is now nearing completion of Jerusalem, a novel he has been working on for six years. It will be more than a million words long, almost double the size of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, and 200,000 words bigger than the Bible. “Any editor worth their salt would tell me to cut two-thirds of this book,” Moore told the New Statesman, “but that’s not going to happen.” Referring to the author of Moby Dick, Moore adds, “I doubt that Herman Melville had an editor. If he had, that editor would have told him to get rid of all that boring stuff about whaling: ‘Cut to the chase, Herman.’” Let’s make Moore and Melville your role models in the coming week, Aquarius. You have permission to sprawl, ramble, and expand. Do NOT cut to the chase.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): For a long time, an Illinois writer named ArLynn Leiber Presser didn’t go out much. She had 325 friends on Facebook and was content to get her social needs met in the virtual realm. But then she embarked on a year-long project in which she sought face-to-face meetings with all of her online buddies. The experiment yielded sometimes complicated but mostly interesting results. It took her to 51 cities around the world. I suggest we make her your inspirational role model for the coming weeks, Pisces. In at least one way, it’s time for you to move out of your imagination and into the real world. You’re primed to turn fantasies into actions, dreams into practical pursuits.

interest with one another? To maintain a healthy friendship/relationship you should ask yourself these questions. Be sure to be honest with yourself.

Life poses many stresses on us daily. Living with clutter or engaging in unhealthy relationships can render you unproductive. Removing the unnecessary from your life does not suggest you don’t care. Recognize this as positive and personal growth in your life. You are being kind and loving to yourself by maintaining a healthy flow of energy. Reserve your energy for things and people who genuinely need you.

Hanging on may be a fear of letting go. Remain cognizant of your personal attitude and demeanor. Are you uptight, feel angry, depressed or sad? It may be because you need to remove the negativity. You are on your life’s journey and have acquired much along the way including relationships. Continually hanging onto to something will not allow you to move forward. If you continue to set goals and are finding difficulty achieving them consider your environment. Ponder these questions… Does hanging on to negative things/relationships serve any purpose? Do they help you move forward? Do they work in your favor in any way?

Releasing something or someone may be key to unlocking your goals and potential. Letting go can be transformative.

Releasing something familiar can be stressful. Intimidated by the unknown? Relinquishing something

or someone may be a daunting thought too. Yet, you know you will be extricated once you take the leap of faith to move forward. Whatever “it” may be it is time to evaluate your life and the circumstances that surrounds you.

Consider your need to “let go” of tangible items in your life or “unhealthy relationships.” Since these two are quite different it is a good idea to extinguish one thing at a time. Once you have decided whether or not you are going to clean your garage or eliminate toxic relationships grab a pen and piece of paper. Commence to write what comforts you and what is debilitating.

Let’s take for example you have a toxic friendship with someone. You have been friends for years but you are unsure how to move forward in your life without hurting his/her feelings. Candor will set you free even if it is a painful experience. Consider your relationship and what you have gained as well as given. Ask yourself a few questions. Is your relationship worth the work to maintain? If you met this person today would you have chosen to be friends with them now? Sometimes we hold onto friendships/relationships out of habit. Are you doing this with anyone you know? How do you feel about yourself when you are with this person? Do you like who you are when you spend time together? Can you rely on your friend? Do you share common

Southern California has professional baseball swag for the first time in a while.

The Angels haven’t made the postseason since 2009, so this is the first time in five years both teams should make the playoffs in the same season.

“The rivalry is good but it’s always better when the teams are playing for something,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.

The Dodgers have the best record in the National League and hold a 1 1/2-game lead in the NL West over the Giants. The Angels have 67 wins (At the writing of this article, second-best in baseball) and are one game behind Oakland for the AL West lead, and

talented players in baseball. To see them on the same field is exciting for the fans … If (Puig) pops up and walks back to the dugout a couple of times, that would be exciting for us.”

What would be exciting for Southern California baseball fans is if both teams make the playoffs again. Puig got his first taste of the postseason last year, but Trout has never been to the playoffs.

The Dodgers were two wins away from the World Series last year but haven’t won one in 26 years. The Angels, who won the World Series in 2002, are looking to get their playoff swag back. Even if Oakland wins the AL West, the Angels are in line for a wild-card spot.

These teams are playing later than usual in the season, with two games here at Dodger Stadium and a two-game home stand for the Angels on Wednesday and Thursday.

It’s a chance to watch Southern California baseball at its best. We haven’t seen the Dodgers and Angels both make the postseason in five years. They’re on track to change that and make this an October to remember.

Clayton Kershaw and Mike Trout did a television interview, Mark McGwire and Albert Pujols were

catching up behind the batting cage, and Tommy Lasorda was in the Angels dugout chatting with players Monday before the Freeway Series opener in front of a sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers and Angels are having fun. They’re fun to watch, and they’re even more fun to watch when they’re playing interleague matchups in August when we can still dream of a World Series matchup.

Both the Dodgers and Angels are in contention for the postseason, meaning

they lead the wild-card standings. These Freeway Series are always

anticipated due to rivalry and proximity, but they’re not always met with as much anticipation as this matchup, since both teams seem playoff-bound and there’s legitimate talk of a World Series set in Southern California.

“For the most part, it happens a lot more than it doesn’t that both teams are in contention,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “We’ve had a little bit of a playoff drought, but a couple of years it came down to the last weekend. It’s more of a rarity when both teams aren’t in contention.

“This is what makes baseball fun for Southern California fans. It’s exciting … This year, we’re certainly at the forefront.”

How can these teams not be at center stage with all these stars? The Angels’ Trout, Pujols, Garrett Richards and Co. are playing well. The Dodgers counter with stars Yasiel Puig, Kershaw, Zack Greinke and a surging Matt Kemp, among others.

Puig and Trout could have a productive rivalry going, and playing in these interleague games should only enhance that.

“Those are two pretty good players,” Scioscia said of Trout and Puig. “Mike and Yasiel are two of the most exciting, mega-

I received a call at my office the other day asking if I performed colonics. I don’t perform that procedure but let’s

talk about it.What is a colonic?Colon cleansing, colon irrigation, high

colonics or colonic hydrotherapy is when water is infused into the colon through the rectum to cleanse and flush out the colon. A speculum is inserted into the anus. The speculum is attached to a long hose that is connected to a colon hydrotherapy unit. Warm water is then released into the colon which then causes the muscles of the colon to contract and push out feces through the hose. Sometimes the colon therapist may lightly massage the patient’s abdomen during the procedure. The patient may feel some discomfort during the therapy session.

what are the side effects?Colon cleansing can cause side effects.

Cramping, bloating, nausea and vomiting are not uncommon. There is an increased risk for dehydration and infection along with the possibility of causing changes in your electrolytes (potassium, calcium, sodium, etc…) which could be dangerous and cause renal failure. Another very serious complication to the procedure is perforation of the colon (a surgical emergency).

what are the benefits?Proponents of colonics believe that

the hardened buildup of fecal matter in the large intestine may interfere with the absorption of water and nutrients. This causes an imbalance in the colon and allows harmful bacteria and yeast to grow which in turn causes toxins from the colon to be absorbed into the blood stream. It is believed that these toxins can cause health problems such as arthritis, allergies, fatigue, weight gain and even asthma. Advocates

of colon cleansing believe that it improves health by removing these toxins, promoting healthy bacterial growth and enhancing the immune system.

Does it really work?Medical literature has shown little

evidence in supporting the benefits of colonic therapy. Studies do note the common occurrence of the side effects of cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting and electrolyte imbalances.

Colon cleansing is an invasive procedure that I believe one doesn’t really need for detoxification. Your digestive system and bowels naturally eliminate waste material and bacteria. Proper diet and nutrition along with a healthy lifestyle will produce a healthy gut.

life & Career COaChby sunny siMon

Clients going through the job interviewing process often want to skip to the bottom line by exploring

a number of what’s if’s. I respond by advising there is no decision to be made until an offer is on the table. When that exciting day arrives and HR has proposed employment, we talk.

Yesterday a young executive client arrived at that crossroad offer in hand. We spoke at great length weighing all the pros and cons. At his level there was more to consider than annual salary, working conditions and vacation time. The pressing question was should he leave a position he has only been in for one month. A lucrative total compensation package was attached to the new offer however; it involved taking a step backward in his career path. Additionally, accepting the proposal meant saying adios to his current employer who had given him flexibility and a chance to grow his career in a thriving culture. After dealing with the emotional impact of the job offer, we both knew the decision came down to his level of integrity. He wisely turned down the new offer knowing it was the right thing to do.

Loyalty in an age of downsizing, sell-offs and short-term gains may seem like old school thinking. Obviously, pension plans and gold watch ceremonies are no longer the norm. Allegiance on both sides of the table is often

fleeting in today’s business environment. Sweeping aside the lack of loyalty on the part of corporate entities, at the end of the day decision making has much to do with who we are and our value system. My client, a man who values integrity and honors his word, was not blinded by the bucks. He knew that leaving his job was akin to tossing aside a new bride for a flirtation with an attractive woman equipped with a bigger bankroll. Sometimes the numbers just don’t add up.

Whether you are selecting a new employer, entering a business deal or committing to a personal relationship, stay true to your personal value system. Bright shiny new objects can be tempting and very distracting. If you are having trouble making a decision, do some soul searching, engage a coach or trusted advisor to help you work through to the bottom line. Having the courage to say no means letting that sparkling object pass you by leaving you free, honor intact and devoid of any guilt. Senator Alan K. Simpson summed it up this way, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.”
