    The Union Cycliste Internationale has developed a series of courses via it’s development department at the World Cycling Centre (WCC).

    The programme aims to assist National Federations develop their coaches, and is designed to provide coach-es with the opportunity to study and practice their coaching under the expert guidance of one the selected WCC Experts. The course programmes are designed to increasing levels of knowledge and expertise in all areas of coaching.

    ABOUT THE UCI COACH EDUCATION PROGRAMMEThe UCI Coach Education programme is separated into two ‘Levels’, as described below:

    HOW TO APPLYEach UCI National Federation may apply to host either a Level 1 or a Level 2 Coach Education course within their country in one year.

    The process of applying for these courses varies, according to how the course will be paid for. There are two options for this – either the National Federation themselves pays or a grant is received from Olympic Solidarity. The below information will explain the process further:

    Olympic Solidarity FundedThe International Olympic Committee (IOC) sup-ports the development of Olympic sports through their ‘Olympic Solidarity’ programmes. One of the areas of Olympic Solidarities focused development strategy is the development of coaches.

    Figure 1 outlines the two processes involved in ap-plying for Olympic Solidarity funding.

    Please note that the application processes must occur at least three months prior to the scheduled course.

    UCI Level 1 Coaching CourseThe UCI level 1 coaching course is the entry qualifi-cation for coaches and focuses on the foundations of coaching.

    The knowledge that is gained on this course is fun-damental to ensuring coaching is appropriate for the riders and for each cycling discipline. Coaches will learn the fundamentals of technique that is con-sistent in all cycling activities and how to deliver ef-fective coached sessions.

    UCI Level 2 Coaching CourseThe UCI level 2 coaching course is the next stage in a coach’s development. Moving on from the funda-mentals learned at Level 1 this course focuses on the components required to assist a rider when training for more advanced performance. Coaches will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to progress riders in up to two disciplines.

    National Federation FundedThe National Federation must complete the ‘Course for Coaches – Questionnaire’ and submit this directly to the UCI training department ([email protected]).

  • COURSE ARRANGEMENTSIn order to organise a successful course, the National Federation must ensure that a certain arrangements are made. Below provides a breakdown of the specific requirements to host either a Level 1 or a Level 2 Coach Education course.

    General ◻ Number of trainees: min. 10

    max. 15

    ◻ Number of days level 1 or 2: between 5 and 7 days

    ◻ Accommodation, housing and meals of the participants (if required)

    ◻ Accommodation, housing and meals of the WCC Expert (housing in a hotel of good security and cleanliness standard)

    ◻ Transport of the participants and of the WCC Expert throughout the training course

    ◻ Interpreter for the translation (if needed).

    Theoretical component ◻ Functional and calm meeting room, with good

    acoustics

    ◻ Audio-visual equipment (projector for slides)

    ◻ Photocopier

    Practical component ◻ For the Road and Track Courses:

    ɜ Road course free or protected from the traffic

    ɜ Following car for the road trainings.

    ɜ Velodrome (if applicable); make sure is available

    ɜ Group of 8 cyclists minimum for the practical and educational activities

    ɜ Bicycles, if the trainees are not able to come with their own

    ɜ Storage room with locker for the bicycles

    ɜ First aid service (first-aid workers)

    ◻ For the BMX and MTB Courses

    ɜ BMX track and mountain-bike course or venue

    ɜ Group of 8 cyclists minimum for the practical and educational activities

    ɜ Bicycles, if the trainees are not able to come with their own

    ɜ Storage room with locker for the bicycles

    ɜ First aid service (first-aid workers)
