Before you start… (discussions to have)
student behavior expectations
grading
growth mindset/fixed intelligence
accommodations/modifications - what ones will be used, who will be responsible for doing/making them
academic and behavior consequences
establishing goals and appropriate assessment
What is Co-teaching (Co-teaching strategies)
Team teaching - both teachers are responsible for planning and delivering instruction to all students
One teach/ one supports
Parallel teaching - plan jointly but split class
Alternative teaching - one teaches most of the class but another teaches a small group inside or outside of the room
Station teaching - teachers divide instructional content and take responsibility for teaching part of it, room is divided in centers

SIOP - Sheltered Instruction for Academic Progress
SIOP is an instructional model that helps all students- especially English Language Learners - master academic content and language. It supports teachers in planning and delivering high-quality instruction for all students. Components include; lesson preparation, building background, strategies, interaction, practice, and assessment. If your district hasn’t provided SIOP training, we recommend it for all teachers - EL and content.
Planning
●Use a Unit Guide○ Plan in increments
●Use a shared planning template○ Equal access, ALL the time (google docs)
●Break the standards down.○ Use MPI’s (WIDA standards)
●Start basic - reach towards goal●Skills used in small groups
○ Designate teacher/assistant that will lead
●Anchor Charts○ done in advance to help instruction
The struggle is real.
Work with what you
have.
Implementing (classroom instruction)
Different models could be used for different lessons/objectives
FLEXIBLE - you never know when your plans can change
Establish clear roles
Lead teacher, small group instructor, circulator, one-on-one instructor, parallel teacher
Each teacher is aware of lesson plan so timing is not an issue
Hands-on Practice
Find a partner
Choose a co-teaching style.
Mock plan a lesson with your “co-teacher”.
Use the handouts to plan an effective co-teaching lesson.
Implementation - Technology 1:1 Chromebooks
Raz-Kids No Red Ink Duolingo Schools Achieve 3000 Google Classroom Gooru Actively Learn Scholastic SCOPE and ActionEDpuzzle Mobymax
The best resources to use for EL students are ones that are adaptive
or at your students’ level. It encourages independence, but makes them feel
successful.
Communication; In person or digital?
Digital
effective once established
less time-consuming
share resources
give each teacher responsibilities
have to depend on other to complete responsibilities
copy of your plans
tone can be misinterpreted
In person
effective communication starting out
time-consuming
chance to bounce ideas off each other
create together
plan long term ideas/goals
you get to know each other
Assessment
●Formal
○ District and State Assessments
○ District Checkpoints
○ Teacher created assessments
■ amplify them instead of simplify them
●Informal
○ More opportunities to talk with students
○ SIOP strategies for students to interact - teacher observation
○ Small Group instruction is easier with two teachers
○ Personalized Conferencing
