The past few years have been eventful ones for all of us at UCSI University. To start, we were ranked as Malaysia’s best private university in both the 2019 and 2020 QS World University Rankings. Classified in the top 2% of all universi-ties in the world, UCSI is also ranked as one of the world’s top 70 young universities under 50 years old and our Institute of Music is ranked in the world’s top 100 for performing arts. We have enlarged our global footprint and our students are annually selected for high impact research programmes by renowned universities like Harvard, Imperial College London, Chicago, Tsinghua and Queensland. We expanded the Kuala Lumpur campus, moved to a new campus in Kuching and we can look forward to the launch of UCSI University Hospital in 2020.
While these developments are encouraging, it’s good for us to look back on the long march that led us to this point. A lot of hard work has been invested since 1986 and if we take stock of the game-changing decisions that helped prepare UCSI for its moonshot, the Co-Operative Education Placement Programme would stand out as one of the best moves we have ever committed to. Launched in 2004, Co-Op started as a longshot initiative – only 21 local companies signed up – and the general perception was that internship was unnecessary. Despite the muted response, we persisted ahead with the firm belief that Co-Op would fuel the engine of job creation at UCSI.
Today, our efforts have been vindicated. With more than 4,300 companies in its network, UCSI students enjoy invaluable internships and many receive job offers while they are still studying. Co-Op’s success has also paved the way for greater industry involvement and today, more and more companies are joining UCSI’s Premier Co-Op programme – an initiative that sees companies providing financial support to selected students throughout their studies. Apart from funding, Premier Co-Op students also benefit from apprenticeship – an arrangement that empowers them with
significantly more employer engagement compared to their peers. I would like to thank our many Co-Op partners for believing in UCSI and entrusting us with their staffing needs. May we take our partnerships to the next level.
Delving deeper, getting the inside scoop on how business is done also sows the seeds of entrepreneurship on campus. More of our students are coming up with startups and I’m heartened to know that a number have swiftly rose to prominence as seed planters and changemakers. In 2018, three UCSI alumni were inducted into the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia for their endeavours in social entrepreneurship. Many more of our graduates are doing greatly and I’m happy to note that a number of our music students have gone on to become acclaimed performing artists not only in Malaysia, but in the region.
In this light, it is apt that UCSI was recently recognised as Malaysia’s best university for alumni outcomes in the 2020 QS Graduate Employability Rankings. UCSI has always been cognisant that the proof of the University’s success is contingent on the achievements of our students. So when they go on to do greatly, we know that we are doing something right. UCSI has come far and if the University is synonymous with graduate employability, it is because Co-Op made it so. This is the Co-Op legacy. And it gives us the confidence that we will prepare our students to excel at today and tomorrow’s jobs.

Message from Academician Senior Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusoff, FAScVice-Chancellor and President of UCSI University
UCSI University is Malaysia’s best private university according to the QS World University Rankings 2019 and 2020. We are also a top three university in Malaysia for graduate employability according to the Graduate Employability Rankings 2020. These achievements speak volumes about our mission, vision and overall goals as an educational institution, and what we aspire and accomplish from year to year.
With more than 10,000 students from 110 different nations, UCSI University is more vibrant than ever before; encouraging students from all walks of life to be successful individuals with integrity, professionalism and a desire to contribute to society. One essential component is the strengthening of the relationship between the university and industry. UCSI University is synonymous with strong linkages to the industry through our Co-Operative Education Placement Programme. This programme provides students with a real and realistic perspective of the industry and the world at large. A survey by the Co-Operative Education and Job Placement Centre recently shows that 89% of the students felt more prepared for their careers after completing their Co-Op placement.
The university is relentless in developing students with an entrepreneurial attitude and management skills. In the recent employer evaluation of UCSI University students, 99.8% of them were satisfied with the students’ performance during the Co-Op placement duration. I am also very pleased to note that 98% of our Co-Op partners would like to rehire UCSI interns.
Over the years, more than 30,000 students have been placed in top industry partners such as ABB Group, KPMG Tax and Services, AirAsia Berhad, Ernst & Young, Leo Burnett, Top Glove and Unilever. This is why every year the university recognises and appreciates our industry partners.
UCSI University has also launched the Premier Co-Op programme which is an approach towards intellectual and professional growth to build career success that demands continual learning and integration. In 2019, we awarded 10 companies in two different award categories: ‘The Most Supportive Premier Co-Op Partner of the Year’ and ‘The Most Supportive Co-Op Partner of the Year’. Companies such as Averis Sdn Bhd, Top Glove Sdn Bhd, Atelier Alan Teh Architect, Worldgate Express Services Sdn Bhd and Concorde Hotel were some the winners of these awards.
As such, UCSI University is standing out amongst the best with these initiatives and with perseverance and unwavering commitment, graduates from this institu-tion will be able to achieve their full potential and surpass all expectations.
Go beyond; Be profound: Make a difference.

INTRODUCTIONHISTORY | MISSION | FUTURE PLAN
Built on the principles of audacity, perseverance, integrity and excellence, UCSI University is a leading institution of higher learning with campuses in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu and Sarawak. Since its inception in 1986, UCSI University has been committed to furthering the discovery and celebration of knowledge. As a Praxis University, UCSI University strongly believes in the university-industry engagement to allow its students to practise what they have been taught in lectures. The launch of UCSI’s Co-Operative Placement (Co-Op) programme in 2004 is the first of its kind in South East Asia. Each student is required to obtain at least two months of internship experience at the end of each academic year, regardless of their discipline. This programme is mandatory for students to be evaluated by the employers and also by faculty members. This would enable students to be equipped with a strong grasp of fundamental workplace practices and the underlying assumption that make them work. With greater access to higher education, competition in the workforce will only intensify and UCSI University wants its graduates to hit the ground running.
The Co-Op programme in its first year had only 21 companies signed up and only 30 students were attached to the companies. Nevertheless, year after year, confidence from the industry partners grew and consequently, more students participated in the Co-Op programme. In 2018 alone, UCSI placed more than 3,700 students in over 4,200 companies. Over the years more than 33,000 students have been attached to prominent multi-national companies such as KPMG, PwC, Publicis One, Top Glove, Nestlé and AIA Group and also reputable local companies such as Star Media Group, Genting, Astro, and Leaderonomics.
BUILD TO LAST
In each level of the Co-Op programme, students are tasked to function as a permanent worker in the company. This is well-understood by the industry partners as the Co-Op programme aims to cultivate graduate attributes such as entre-preneurship and management skills among students. Sustaining the UCSI graduate attributes and educational goals will help in enhancing the contribution of UCSI graduates to the community, society and to the country.
With the success of the Co-Op programme, UCSI University seeks to continually strengthen the engagement with the industry through the Premier Co-Op programme that was launched in 2016. This provides opportunities for the indus-tries to work directly with a team of students and professors to contribute to the work process through research and teamwork. Through this new programme, the industry can acquire talent directly from the University.
The world has entered the 4th Industrial Revolution with the Internet of things, data analytics, data science and artificial intelligence on the rise. These developments will impact the future careers of university graduates. UCSI University is aware of this new wave and is preparing its graduates with skills to face the challenges ahead in this era.
STAYING FUTURE-PROOF THROUGH THE YEARS

Praxis Centres in UCSI University
PRAXIS CENTRES
In Ancient Greek, Praxis® described an activity involving free men. In ethics, economics and politics, Praxis signifies a practical emphasis where the end goal was action. Interpretation was pointless wihout it and theory had to result in practice.
In the same light, UCSI University is advocating the Praxis model as we believe that and academic approach should expand your horizons, not limit it. It shouldexhilarate you, not bore you.
Above all, UCSI seeks to connect students to today’s world of end-to-end responsibility, not insulate them from it - because we believe that good work should always be practised, not said. Go beyond the classroom at UCSI: The Praxis University.
