INTRODUCTION

An effective teacher performs many roles and functions which are very essential in promoting the holistic development of the learners. One of the roles that he/she performs is the organization of co-curricular activities. These activities have existed in schools even during the ancient times. The objectives of education cannot be realized by academics alone. To achieve all round development – physical, mental, emotional, socio-cultural, spiritual – varied outside the school or classroom activities must be incorporated in the curriculum.

DIFFERERENCE BETWEEN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR

ACTIVITIES

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESA co-curricular activity is defined as a program

or out-of-class activity, supervised and/or financed by the school, which provides curriculum- related learning and character building experiences. "Co-curricular activities" means activities conducted on or off school premises by clubs, associations, and organizations of pupils sponsored by the Board of Education;.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular Activities (ECA) are activities that educational organizations in some parts of the world create for school students. They are activities which all school students must attend alongside.

Co-curricular activities are categorized under seven headings;

I. Literary Activities 2. Physical Development Activities 3.Aesthetic and Cultural Development

Activities 4.Civic Development Activities 5.Social Welfare Activities 6.Leisure Time Activities 7. Excursion Activities

LITERACY is "the quality or state of being literate." Literacy not only involves competency in reading and writing, but goes beyond this to include the critical and effective use of these in peoples' lives, and the use of language (oral and written) for all purposes." EXAMPLES: debate dramatics story writing journalism seminars.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES includes; games, athletics, parade, outing drills.

AESTHETIC/CULTURAL ACTIVITIES includes; Music Painting, Scouting, Drawing, Dancing, Sculpture.

CIVIC AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES includes; Students assembly, Student council, Organizing cooperatives, Holding of festivals, celebration of religious events.

SOCIAL WELFARE ACTIVITIES includes

Faith, Assembly, First aid, Scouting, Social services.LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES includes

Coin collection, Stamp collection, Photography, Origami, Needle work/ cross stichEXCURSION ACTIVITIES includes

Visual to the museum, visual to the zoo, visual to exhibits, picnics.

• Choose activities which are based onstudent's interest.• Objectives of co-curricular activities mustbe made clear.• Committees may be formed to empowerall students to participants. • Unravel the potentials of students to maximum.• Remember to involve all the students inco-curricular activities. • Rules and regulations must be set in all the activities.
