Commencement Speaker Biography

Melvin D. Shipp, OD, MPH, DrPH

Dr. Shipp is an Emeritus Professor and former Dean of The Ohio StateUniversity College of Optometry. Previously, he was a professor at the

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry, where he also servedas the Assistant Dean for Clinical Services and Director of Clinics.

Dr. Shipp is a past president of the Association of Schools and Colleges ofOptometry — a non-profit education association representing the interests ofoptometric education — and past president of the National Board of Examiners inOptometry. He was founding chair of the Education Board of the American PublicHealth Association (APHA), the world’s oldest and largest public health association.He served two terms as APHA treasurer, and in 2010 became the first optometrist

elected to the office of APHA president. He is the only optometrist to receive a Robert Wood Johnson Health PolicyFellowship and serve as a health legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate.

Dr. Shipp has served as an advisor/consultant to several federal institutions, notably the Food and DrugAdministration, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the National Eye Institute (NEI) of theNational Institutes of Health. He currently serves as the optometry representative on the Special Medical AdvisoryGroup, which advises the Secretary and the Undersecretary for Health of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Shipp received a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from Indiana University, a Master of Public Health (MPH)degree from Harvard University, and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the University of Michigan. Heis just the second optometrist to earn the DrPH degree and the first to do so through the Pew Health PolicyDoctoral Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan.

With full deliberation I freely and solemnly pledge that:

I will practice the art and science of optometry faithfully and conscientiously, and to the fullestscope of my competence.

I will uphold and honorably promote, by example and action, the highest standards, ethics andideals of my chosen profession and the honor of the degree, Doctor of Optometry, which hasbeen granted me.

I will place the treatment of those who seek my care above personal gain, and strive to see thatnone shall lack for proper care.

I will hold as privileged and inviolable all information entrusted to me in confidence by mypatients.
