THE LOCKINGTON POOL IS TURNING 50!

Through a lot of hard work and community support, the Lockington pool was officially opened in March 1966. The pool has changed over the years and has now reached it's 50th year. To celebrate this milestone, on Saturday the 5th March, a party is being arranged. For the kids, there will be a large inflatable and fun pool games. For all the past and present volunteers, community groups, pool visitors and parents, there will be time to swap stories over a cuppa and maybe have a sausage or two. If anyone has any great photos of the pool, the school is happy to photocopy them, so we can share the history that it has. A big thank you in advance to Pentreaths for donating the sausages and bread, the Action club for the BBQ on the day, and Big W for decorations. It's a great chance to say thank you to everyone who has shaped our pool, so lets support our pool!

THE POOL OPENING “The latest attraction to the township is the swimming pool, which was opened on March 4, 1966, by the Minister for Local Government, Mr. Hamer. The cost of the pool was £21,000, and unfortunately it was not opened free of debt, but the takings over the first season covered all funning costs, even though all children were admitted free for the first season. Mr. W. Pittaway is president of the Swimming Pool Committee, and Mr. T. parsons is secretary. A voluntary roster or citizens operates the pool.” The above article has been taken from the book: “Then ' The water-wheel turned. History of Lockington and District 1867 – 1967” by Fae Stevens and Elizabeth O’Brien.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Psalm91 v 13@14 You will trample down lions and poi-sonous snakes; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! 14 The Lord says “ I will rescue those who love me, I will protect those who trust in my name.

THE SEASON OF LENT Right now, we’re in the part of the church’s year called ‘Lent’, a word that comes from the Old Eng-lish word for Spring (the season Lent falls in the Northern Hemisphere). Lent was originally a season where new followers of Jesus would get themselves ready for entering into his church through baptism, which always happened on Easter Sunday (the day we remem-ber Jesus’ resurrection from the dead). Lent was a time for these new Christians to ‘limber

up’ spiritually, much like you would for a footy match. They’d pray, read scrip-ture, give up some things to focus more on God. Over time, lots of Christians started to join in, and eventually it became part of the church’s year. It’s a time when simplify things and look forward, with thoughtfulness and great hope to the time when we celebrate new life and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! Why not join the Lenten journey at one of our local churches this year?

LOCKINGTON SCHOOL NEWS Congratulations to our 2016 School Leaders Last Friday our very talented Grade 6 students prepared and delivered their speeches to be selected as school captains, vice captains and house captains. All of our students who took part performed outstanding speeches and we all would have been happy if anyone of them gained the role.

Open Water Learning Experience On Wednesday the 10th of February our Grade 5/6 students travelled to Moama to take part in the OWLE, which was run by Life Saving Victoria. The program comprises fun and edu-cational activities that familiarise students with their local open water environments. Discovery Time- Dinosaurs The students from Prep – 2 have begun Discovery Learning time on Monday afternoons. The theme for Term 1 is Dino-saurs. The students are very excited to be researching and exploring the world of dinosaurs. Students have been exploring lots of interesting facts about dinosaurs by being en-gaged in hands on learning opportunities. Students are able to explore and learn in a stimulating environment, both individually and with others. 2016 Prep Class The 23 Prep students have settled well into school life. They are enjoying their learning and are doing an amaz-

ing job. Well done Preps and Jenny!!! New Teachers We would also like to welcome two new staff members to our school. Miss Watson is teaching Grade 1/2 A and Miss Wilson is teaching in the Grade 3/4 B classroom. We are really excited that they have joined our staff and the students are enjoying getting to know them.

PETER WALSH ISSUES INVITATION TO PARLIAMENT HOUSE OPEN DAY

Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh has issued an invitation to the constituents of the Murray Plains electorate to visit Parliament House for it’s annual

Open Day on Sunday 6 March 2016.

“The day offers visitors the chance to explore areas of Parliament not usually open to the public,” Mr Walsh said. “Visitors can sit in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council Chambers, visit the Parliamentary Library, and enjoy morning and afternoon tea in the Member’s Dining

Room. “They can also visit the committee room, see the Speaker’s and members’ offices and have lunch in the parliamentary gardens.” This year’s Open Day is celebrating the 160th anniversary of the Victorian Parliament. Mr Walsh said entry was free and there would be exhibits from all departments. “This is a great opportunity for Victorians to see their Parliament and to gain an appreciation of the architecture of the building,” Mr Walsh said.

LOCKINGTON BOWLS CLUB REPORT

Feb 15: Last Tuesday the women had a fine field to compete in the Triples event. The out-right winners were Ann Lowrie, Phyllis MacFarlane and Lois Chugg (s) with a pol-ished performance from the dominant trio. In

the mid-week pennant competition the women lowered their colours to the might of the visiting Moama teams, losing all three rinks. Moama winning 99-41. (A Lowrie P Humbert, L Appleby, K Palmer (s) lost to S Connolly 15-39; B Mustey, P MacFarlane, M Malone, L Chugg (s) l.t. B Eddy 20-25; A Haines, M Davis, H Pitts, R Gallagher (s) l.t. M Stephenson 6-35). As Rich River Green defeating Deniliquin the finals mission is somewhat cloudy with only a couple of rounds left. The CVBD Saturday pennant resulted in a win and a loss for the club as division two scored a meritorious victory over the strong Mathoura side to win 70-62. The win was achieved with a mighty effort as four regular skippers were absent. This could provide the selectors with a minor quandary. The Tom Davis skipped rink saved the day as they had to win the final end to make the win possible. (K Main, G Hyden, I Johnson, R Shawcross (s) d. S O'Callaghan 34-12; R Han-son, R Gallagher, D Lupton, G Turner (s) l.t. L Whelan 13-34; R Head, I Palmer, A Kauffman, T Davis d. R Ireland 23-16). In the division four battle against City of Echuca our teams failed to win a rink and nearly put paid to the finals chances. However Moama and Deniliquin had a tie so the door is still slightly ajar as the difference is only five points between Moama and Lockington in the battle for fourth place. We play hosts to Moama this week, so a win is vital with only two rounds remaining after this week. (K Gibbon, D Smith, L Chugg, F Chugg (s) l.t. C Moss 23-27; K Stout, N Bacon, P Collins, N Haines (s) l.t. B Tyson 11-33; C Stewart, P Cunnington, B Musgrove, S Peter (s) l.t. S Morgan 15-27). In the club competitions Graeme Turner defeated Ken Main in a 100 Up thriller as Turner won the game with the final bowl 100-99. Feb 22: Last Tuesday the women played the game of Scrounge for their social bowls day. At the completion of play the winners were Betty Mustey and Annette Brereton with both bowlers showing extreme talent. In the club com-petitions Rhonda Gallagher defeated Leanne McInnes in a polished display while Lorraine Appleby was on

song to defeat Pauline Humbert in a high standard match. In earlier matches Lois Chugg accounted for Kath Palmer and Annette Brereton proved too consistent for Ann Lowrie. The mens 100 Up competition witnessed a strong performance from Don Isgro as he overpowered Tom Davis in a marathon match to earn a berth in the final. Other re-sults were Bill Musgrove defeating Russell Shawcross and Graham Turner beat Ken Main. Musgrove and Turnere will play to decide the opponent for Isgro. The 21Up President trophy Tom Davis defeated Isgro while Neil Haines was in good to beat Phillip Cunnington. Both winners are in the semi finals and wait for the result of other matches to be played. Alan Kauffman versus Ray Hanson and Musgrove is to play Russell Holman. The women continued in their winning vein in the latest round of mid-week pennant. Playing Rich River Blue away, the teams bowled brilliantly to score a 72-63 victory. The win further enhanced their prospects of a finals berth, however Rich River Green had an upset win against City of Echuca and with one round left remaining their hopes have dis-solved. (A Brereton, P Humbert, L Maslen, K Palmer (s) d. R Sinclair 23-16; M Davis, Helen Pitts, M Davie, R Gallagher (s) l.t. J Hocken 22-28; B Mustey, L Appleby, P MacFarlane, M Malone (s) d. M Stevens 27-19). In the CVBD Saturday pennant both divisions were defeated by their respective opponents. Division two played Cityof Echuca and lost 54-86 with just the one rink up. (P Cunnington, G Hyden, I Johnson, R Shawcross (s) d. T Egan 26-16; R Head, I Palmer, A Kauffman, T Davis (s) lost to J Thomas 9-37; R Hanson, J Harris, D Lupton, G Turner (s) l.t. R Kelly 19-33). Division four played a must-win game against Moama in their bid to make the final four. With only one rink win the task proved too great and Moama won the match 78-66 and our finals chances were exterminated. (K Stout, N Bacon, P Collins, N Haines (s) l.t. S Sutton 26-27; C Stewart, L McInnes, B Musgrove, S Peter (s) d. A Sheehan 24-11; K Gibbon, D Smith, L Brereton, F Chugg (s) l.t. IC Smith 16-40). The Friday evenings practice session and barbeque are proving popular. The lucky members draw favoured the ab-sent Betty Mustey. The previous week the club President Phillip Cunnington won the rolling jackpot. The 2 bowl Triples scheduled for Sunday 6th March has been cancelled.

SHIRE NEWS

POOL FENCE INSPECTIONS BEGIN. Non-compliant pool and spa owners will be notified in coming weeks of changes necessary to their

fences. Following a shire-wide audit in line with state leg-islation, all backyard pools and spas built without appro-priate permits will be asked to comply and get the appro-priate permits. Depending on the level of work required, the property owner will receive either a Minor Building Order under Section 113 of the Building Act 1993 and be given 30 or 60 days to complete the works or an Emer-gency Building Order under Section 103 of the same act with a temporary fence to be built within two to three days of the order. The audit and inspections come after an amnesty that ran from 30 September to 30 November 2015. HERITAGE IMPORTANT TO SHIRE. One of the last stages of implementing the heritage overlay moved a step closer this week with Council adopting the C101 Heritage Planning Amendment. In 2003 the Shire of Campaspe

undertook a heritage gap study to capture the gaps in heritage across the shire, picking up the townships of Ballendella, Bamawm, Burnewang, Girgarre, Gunbower, Gunbower Island, Kanyapella, Kotta, Kyabram, Kyvalley, Ky West, Lancaster, Lockington, Milloo, Patho, Pine Grove, Prairie, Rochester, Stanhope, Strathallan, Tenny-son, Terrick Terrick, Timmering, Tongala, Wyuna and Yambuna. The amendment was adopted following an extensive process dating back to 2003, which included a gap study, exhibiting the planning amendment, public submissions, and an independent review. The process culminated in the Planning Panel delivering their report recommendations to Council in January. These recom-mendations now form the proposed changes to the Cam-paspe Planning Scheme. From here, Council will write to the Minister requesting this change to the Planning Scheme. If you are affected by the overlay and are plan-ning work on your property, call Council’s statutory plan-ning department to discuss your options and how the de-partment can assist. Only some works require a permit.
