Age requirementsIn compliance with North Carolina law, students must be 5 years of age on or before August 31st to be considered for Kindergarten. Students applying for the Montessori schools Pre-K program must be 4 years of age on or before August 31st in order to be considered.
Immunization and Health Assessment RequirementsIncompliancewithNorthCarolinalaw,allchildrenenteringNCpublicschoolsforthefirsttimemustsubmitproofofahealthassessmentwithin30days.Thehealthassessmentmusthavebeencompletedwithin12monthspriortothedatethechildwouldhavefirstbeeneligibleforinitialentryintothepublicschools.Inaddition,NorthCarolinalawrequiresparents/guardiantopresentcertificationofimmunizationsonorbeforethefirstdayofschool entry. If documentation is not presented, parents and/or guardians have 30 calendar days to provide documentation or the student shall be excluded from school until proof is provided.

CMS school options include magnet programs, career academies, early and middle colleges, and other distinctive school models. Each option focuses on ensuring students are prepared for college and a career while exposing studentstodifferentlearningapproaches,leadershippreparation,andengagingcurriculum.
EntrepreneurshipTheEntrepreneurshipprogramoffersstudentscomprehensiveprogramsofstudythatalignwithbusinessandindustryneeds,andenhancetheir21stcenturyleadershipskills.Thisprogramisdesignedtointentionallycultivate and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in students by providing the skills necessary to successfully compete for and create jobs in the evolving and future workplace. Students can prepare for a wide range of businessrelatedcareerpathways,includingfinance,marketingandhospitalityandbusinessservices,likecosmetology. By encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset, students will succeed whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or become entrepreneurs.
Special Features• The Cosmetology Apprentice Program is licensed by and follows the regulations of the North Carolina
BoardofCosmeticArtsExaminers.Cosmetologystudentscanearnupto1200hoursofinstructionintheory and practice application
• Culinary Arts students receive hands on training in a fully equipped kitchen in a program that articulates both public and private post-secondary arts programs.
Middle CollegesInpartnershipwithCentralPiedmontCommunityCollege(CPCC),CMSoffersacceleratedlearningopportunitiesthat allow students the opportunity to take college courses while completing their high school graduation requirements. Students can complete an associate degree or earn up to two years of transferable college credit, tuition free. Given the rigor of completing both the high school diploma and the associate degree or two years of college credit, students have an additional year (i.e., grade 13) to graduate.
MiddleCollegeHighSchools(MCHS)arelocatedontheCato,Levine,Merancas,andHarpercampusesofCPCC. The program serves high school students in grades 11-13 and admits 100 students per campus each year. Students enrolled in a MCHS will take courses required for high school graduation while also taking college coursestowardsapost-secondarycertificate,collegetransfer,associatedegree,and/orindustrycertification.

Early CollegeInpartnershipwiththeUniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte(UNCCharlotte),CMSoffersacceleratedlearning opportunities that allow students the opportunity to take college courses while completing their high school graduation requirements. In addition to earning a high school diploma, students can earn up to two years of transferable college credit, tuition free. All early college high school courses are Honors, Advanced Placement or college level courses. Given the rigor of completing both the high school diploma and two years of college credit, students have an additional year (i.e., grade 13) to graduate.

Military, Global Leadership & Public SafetyThis program develops leaders who are knowledgeable about their contributions to the global community throughbuildingandmaintainingpositivetrustingrelationshipsandservicelearning.InadditiontoJROTC,rising9thgradestudentshaveanopportunitytopursueapathwayinPublicSafety.Studentswillhavehands-onpersonalizedinstructionintheskillsneededtosucceedinlawenforcement,firefightingandemergencyservice.All students start with an overview of public safety and then focus on their area of interest. The program is designed to build a public service foundation in high school and prepare students to advance their skills through a partnership with CPCC and UNC Charlotte.

International BaccalaureateThe IB program is a rigorous program of study that focuses on critical thinking and international mindedness. STEM and STEAMSTEM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Along with content knowledge, a strong STEM program establishes student behaviors, which include engagement in inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation. Visual and Performing ArtsThe focus of the Visual and Performing Arts program is to develop a student’s talents and passion for the arts. As an integral part of a strong academic program, the Arts are approached through Arts education, integration and exposure.
At the elementary level, the Arts are used as a catalyst for building a collaborative, creative, Arts-infused culture and community. Students receive weekly classes in each of the four arts disciplines, as well as Arts integrated instruction in their grade-based classroom.
Students continuing to the middle and high school program will receive seven consecutive years of rigorous, intensiveinstructioninthevisualandperformingartsatapre-professionallevel.Theprogramprovidesflexible,skill-based groupings in the visual and performing arts to address the needs of individual students.

Learning Immersion and Talent DevelopmentTheLearningImmersionandTalentDevelopment(LI/TD)programprovidesstudentsalearningenvironmentfocused on instructional strategies for advanced learners and rigorous curriculum. The Talent Development (TD) program serves grades 3-5. Childrenwhoentertheprogramatagefourbenefitmostfromtheprogram.Inordertogainthegreatestbenefit,children should attend through the terminal grade. Please note, tuition is required for the Pre-K program serving four-year-oldsandanadditionalchargeisrequiredforbustransportation.Limitedscholarshipsareavailable;pleasecontacttheOfficeofSchoolOptionsandInnovationat980.343.5030formoreinformation.NorthCarolinalawrequiresstudentstoreachagefiveonorbeforeAugust31sttoenterkindergartenthatschoolyear.Toensure students can enter kindergarten upon completion of Pre-K, CMS requires children to reach age four on or before August 31st to be eligible for the Montessori Pre-K program.

Address Changes May Void Lottery ApplicationA change of address will automatically void a submitted lottery application. After the family’s address has beenupdated,anotherlotteryapplicationreflectingthestudent’snewaddressmaybesubmittedbeforetheapplicable lottery deadline to be considered during the lottery selection process.
Participation in the Second Lottery May Void First Lottery SelectionsTheSecondLotteryapplicationperiodisanopportunitytofillvacantseatsremainingaftertheFirstLottery.FamiliesmayparticipateintheSecondLotteryapplicationprocess,eveniftheyhavepreviouslyparticipatedintheFirstLottery,however,theFirstLotteryapplication(andwaitpoolposition)willbeautomaticallyvoided.ParticipationintheSecondLotteryisbestforfamilieswhoarenewtothedistrictand/orwhodidnotparticipateintheFirstLotteryorforfamilieswhohavereconsideredaSchoolChoiceandwishtomakenewselections.
Future EnrollmentTo be eligible to participate in the lottery, students interested in attending a CMS school must be enrolled for the upcoming school year. Current CMS students do not need to take action to enroll. New students must enroll by the applicable lottery deadline. Enrollment information can be found at CMSchoice.org
TransportationTransportationwillbeprovidedforschooloptionsprogramsiftheprogramservesthestudent’sidentifiedtransportation zone or is a county-wide magnet program. CMS assigns neighborhood stops located near a student’s residence and certain families may elect shuttle stops based on eligibility.
Assessment ResultsNorth Carolina End of Grade/End of Course (EoG/EoC) results are not required for future students making application for placement in a school options program if currently:
• attending a private or parochial school,• being home-schooled, or• living outside the state of North Carolina
Student must be at grade level and promoted at the end of the current year. Students will be held accountable for meeting established continuation requirements for the program in which the student is enrolled the coming school year.

Lottery PrioritiesStudents are assigned in priority order.
• Sibling Guarantee allows a younger sibling/twin of a student already assigned to a CMS Choice School viatheLotteryortoahomeschoolviatheSchoolPerformancePrioritytoattendtheschoolofthe older sibling/twin.
• ContinuationGuaranteeallowsstudentscurrentlyenrolledinaCMSChoiceSchoolviatheLottery,orin a home school via the School Performance Priority to remain through the terminal grade and continue to the next level school for the program, if one exists.
• SES Priority assigns students a priority for seats designated as either low, medium or high SES based on the student’s block group and family reported data.
• School Performance Priority provides a priority for students attending a home school designated by the state as low performing for three consecutive years.
• Proximity Priority provides a priority for students residing within 1/3 mile radius of a full magnet. The priority does not apply to partial magnet schools.
• Transportation Zone Priority provides transportation to CMS Choice Schools for students residing within the zone. Students in the transportation zone have priority for schools in that zone ahead of students residing outside the zone.
Wait Pool/Wait ListA Wait Pool is established when there are more students than seats in a particular School Choice program. After all available seats in a program are assigned, all remaining applicants are automatically added to a wait pool.(Studentsareeligibleforwaitpoolplacementfortheirfirstlotteryselectiononly.)AttheendoftheSecondLottery,allwaitpoolapplicantsareplaced,inorder,onawaitlistaccordingtotherandomnumberassignedduringthelotteryprocess.Waitlistsareaccessedbyschoolsinthesummerof2017.Ifaseatbecomesavailable,theschoolwillcontactthenextpersononthewaitlistandofferthemaseat.Thestudenthasanopportunityto accept or decline placement, so please make sure your phone number is current with CMS. The school will continuetocontactstudentsuntilallavailableseatsarefilled.Thereisnoguaranteeofplacementfromthewaitlist.AllwaitlistsaredissolvedattheendofthefirstacademicquarterinOctober.
Sibling GuaranteeCMS guarantees younger siblings placement into the same School Choice program as older siblings through the lottery process, provided all entrance requirements and eligibility criteria are met. (CMS Board Policy regulation JCA-R). Siblings are recognized as students with the same residence. For current CMS students, a younger sibling(s) or twin can be placed in the same program and school or any program on the same campus as a current CMS sibling. Theyoungersibling(s)mustmaketheselectionastheirfirstchoiceontheirschoollotteryapplication.Forfamiliesnewto CMS, all siblings in a family can be placed in the same program and school. All siblings must identify the same programandschoolastheirfirstchoiceontheirSchoolChoicelotteryapplication.
Additionally,thefirstadmittedsiblingmustremainenrolledintheschoolfortheentireyearinorderforthesiblingguaranteetoremainineffectfortheothersibling(s).Thesiblingguaranteeonlyoperatesintheschooloptionslottery,sofamiliesmustusetheOnlineLotteryApplication.

Requests for Reassignment Transfer to a CMS School Choice ThemeA family can make a request to be reassigned to a CMS School Choice Theme. Reassignment requests will be considered for one of the following reasons:
1. Request to attend the student’s home school—placement is guaranteed2. ChildofCMSstaff—placement is not guaranteed3. Medical and/or Health Condition of the student—requires completed CMS Medical Packet4. Extreme Hardship—requires written explanation and supporting documentation
Before submitting a request for reassignment, please consider the following:• Students attending a school through reassignment must remain in good standing, adhering to the Code
of Student Conduct to remain at the school.• Transportation is only provided to schools that serve your transportation zone or to your home school.• Achangeinhighschoolassignmentmayaffecteligibilitytoparticipateininterscholasticathletics.For

Torequestareassignment,thefamilymustfirstcompleteallstepsnecessarytomeetthedesiredSchoolChoiceentrance requirements. After all requirements have been met, the family completes the online Request for Reassignment/Transfer form, which can be found at CMSchoice.org
The family must also indicate that they have reviewed the Magnet Expectations Agreement for the desired program and submit the school’s letter of acknowledgement as supporting documentation to accompany the online Request for Reassignment/Transfer form. Approved reassignment/transfer requests will cancel and void the student’s lottery application, lottery assignment, and wait pool/wait list placements, unless submitted and approvedafterJuly1,2017.
Entrance RequirementsAllstudentswhoapplyforaprogrammustmeetexistingentrancerequirementsandagreetofulfillprogramrequirements to remain enrolled in the program. Some programs require additional application materials. Failure to complete the instruction steps in the correct order (if applicable) may result in a delay or inability to process a request.

Q: Can a student residing outside of Mecklenburg County apply for the CMS magnet lottery?A: No. If your address falls outside Mecklenburg County, you cannot apply for a magnet school/program.
Q: What if my child attends a school that qualifies him/her for the School Performance Priority?A: Students attending a school designated by the state as low performing for three consecutive years have
