CMI Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership This industry-standard qualification from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) will equip candidates with the core knowledge, skills and behaviours to work effectively as leaders and managers. It will support candidates in strengthening and developing their knowledge of middle management by focusing on specific management areas that are applicable to their job. This qualification is intended for middle managers as well as those aspiring to senior management and Chartered Manager status who want to develop key skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management.

Entry Requirements This qualification is designed for practising or aspiring middle managers; as such candidates will need current or previous experience at first line or middle management level, or should be ready to move into a management role. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy) and feel reasonably confident with report and analytical writing. Prior to enrolling candidates will be required to undertake a telephone interview with a course tutor. Candidates must be over 19 years of age. Qualification Structure To achieve the Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management and Leadership candidates are required to achieve a total of 62 credits. Mandatory units – candidates need to achieve 36 credits from the following mandatory units:

Personal development as a manager and leader (6 credits) - This unit is about assessing and improving individual management and leadership skills and competencies against objectives.

Information based decision making (7 credits) - This unit is about using, presenting and communicating data that supports decision making.

Practices of resource management (7 credits) - This unit is about identifying, planning, using and evaluating resources to meet objectives.

Meeting stakeholder and quality needs (6 credits) - This unit is about meeting stakeholder requirements to agreed quality standards and seeking improvements.

Conducting a management project (10 credits) - This unit is about identifying, researching and producing a work-related project and evaluating its impact.

Optional units Group B options - Candidates need to achieve a minimum of 7 credits from the following units:

Managing team and individual performance (9 credits) - This unit is about the management of individual and team performance and how to improve performance.

Being a leader (7 credits) - This unit is about understanding and applying leadership skills and the understanding of ethical and cultural issues within the organisation.

Group C options - Candidates need to attain a minimum of 19 credits from the following units:

Organisational financial management (9 credits) - This unit is about financial management systems and controls and the impact of external factors on organisational financial management.

Conducting a marketing plan (9 credits) - This unit is about understanding the role of marketing, the organisation’s current market position and planning for widening markets.

Project development and control (6 credits) - This unit is about understanding projects, developing project plans and ensuring projects achieve objectives with targets.

Planning for development (6 credits) - This unit is about planning human resource requirements to enable work objectives to be met and providing objective development opportunities for individuals.

Managing recruitment, selection and induction (7 credits) - This unit is about identifying a need for staff, selecting objectively and inducting effectively within legal and organisational requirements.

Leadership practice (7 credits) - This unit is about the links between management and leadership, key leadership principles and leadership theory.

Ethical organisational management (7 credits) - This unit is about the principles of organisational ethics, the effect on corporate social responsibility, and understanding organisational ethics in differing cultural values systems and ideologies.

Planning a change process (7 credits) - This unit is about identifying opportunities for change, modelling the change process and managing the change to produce expected outcomes.

Leading equality and diversity (7 credits) - This unit is about organisational commitment to equality and diversity, and its application and support throughout the organisation.

Developing and managing networks (7 credits) - This unit is about developing managerial networks, capitalising on those networks by using data or information gained to inform the organisation’s plans.

Managing ideas and innovation (7 credits) - This unit is about encouraging and supporting the identification and practical implementation of ideas and innovation across the organisation.

Managerial decision making (7 credits) - This unit is about the challenges and skills of making managerial decisions that must be made in support of the organisational objectives, purpose and vision.

Introduction to management and leadership (7 credits) - This unit is about the foundation skills and knowledge of a middle manager and leader.

Operational risk management (7 credits) - This unit is about understanding risk, assessing risk, implementing and evaluating risk management activities.

Organisational corporate social responsibility (7 credits) - This unit is about understanding the organisational strategy for Corporate Social Responsibility, developing an implementation plan, delivering the plan and evaluating and reporting results.

Delivery and Support This qualification is delivered by supported distance learning. Candidates will be allocated a tutor who is a subject specialist within the field of management and leadership. Their tutor will support and advise candidates throughout their qualification and will:

Provide a comprehensive induction to the qualification

Support candidates to select the most appropriate units

Support candidates in developing their knowledge and understanding

Plan with candidates how to meet the qualification requirements

Review and feedback on the work candidates complete Candidates will be provided an account for our web based learning management system (LMS). Via this system candidates will be able to:

Progress at a pace that best suits them

View up-to-date, on-going progress

Study when, and where, they want

Access a range of study and learning support materials needed to develop their knowledge and understanding

Study Sources All candidates have access to the 'Management Direct' resource from CMI. This is an excellent bank of resources which gives access to learning materials in a range of media, including videos, templates and presentations. Candidates can search by time as well as topic, so they can fit in learning around how much time they have!

Assessment To meet the requirements of this qualification, candidates are required to complete an assignment, project, case study, report and / or portfolio (dependent on the units selected).

Qualification duration This is dependent upon the candidate’s individual circumstances but generally the qualification duration is between 18-20 months.
