Christ the King has been awarded a Community Ministry Grant through the Center for Congregations. Here’s what the grant entails.
Meaningful Connections: GriefShare and Fresh Hope Partnering with Seasons Counseling of Michiana and local funeral homes, we will be equipped to meet the needs of vulnerable populations through our Fresh Hope support group and Grief Share classes. Fresh Hope will empower individuals and families living with a mental health diagnosis. GriefShare will provide support for those suffering loss.
With Others: Community Events 2nd Half Adventures events, a joint program with Clay United Methodist Church, invites senior citizens to share in fellowship along with being educated and/or entertained. A School’s Out For Summer event will invite people in the community to participate in outdoor games, food and conversation. A Fall Festival, which mirrors the summer event, allows us to reconnect and get ready for the upcoming school year.
Over A Meal: Kitchen Upgrades We hope to find "community Eucharist" and help people build meaningful relationships by sharing a meal. Funds will be used to replace existing appliances, purchase Corelle plates and a holder to transport dishes, a large dishwasher and upgrade well water to eliminate bottled water.
With Guidance: Coach As the outcome of this project is to learn and practice more about "community Eucharist" events, we will require the guidance of a coach to provide ongoing guidance for the CMG Implementation Team, lead a council/staff/CMG team retreat, and lead two full congregational workshops. These will help us structure conversations to engage people beyond the surface.

Over A Meal: Kitchen Upgrades
Christ the King has been awarded a Community Ministry Grant from the Center for Congregations for $30,000! Over the next year, this grant (plus the matching funds given by the congregation) will allow us to “form meaningful connections with others over a meal, with guidance.” In previous issues of the King’s Herald, you’ve read about becoming meaningfully connected through two new support groups (GriefShare and Fresh Hope). You’ve read about the community events planned for June 5 and September 25. Today’s focus, then, is on the “over a meal” portion of the equation. Tom’s article below explains that piece
magnificently. Please keep reading! Next month will include more information about our coach throughout the process, Heidi Unruh. In the meantime, please hold the afternoon of Sunday, February 9. There won’t be football (the Super Bowl is the previous Sunday). It’s not likely to be raking weather yet (clearly we have not gotten to the fall leaves in our front yard). But if you are intrigued by what it looks and feels like to form meaningful connections…and if you are curious how that relates to CtK’s larger mission of loving and serving the world…and if you like Italian food…please plan to be part of the conversation with Coach Heidi.
Happy New Year and blessings as always, Pastor Caroline
By now, we as members of CtK should be settling in on the four main pillars that support our overarching CMG Grant strategy, “Forming meaningful connections with others over a meal, with guidance.” Those four main pillars are Meaningful Connections – Grief Share and Fresh Hope; With Others – Community Events; Over a Meal – Kitchen Upgrades; With Guidance – Coach. We heard about two of the main pillars in recent Kings Herald newsletters so far; Meaningful Connections in the November edition, Community Events in the December edition and now, Over a Meal this month. Stay tuned for the February edition to learn more about, With Guidance. Over a Meal – Kitchen Upgrades, is the tangible pillar. It is appliances, dishes, carts and a water purification system. However, it’s the least important pillar. The other three pillars are the main story and source of miracles that can occur through them. Kitchen upgrades is the donkey in the room. Wait, what does a donkey have to do with all this? Over two thousand years ago there were two miracles that occurred that included two different donkeys. One of the donkeys carried Mary and her unborn child to Bethlehem to begin the earthly story of God becoming flesh in a baby, Jesus…an amazing miracle. The other donkey carried a King into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to begin the final saga of how God planned to save the world through the sacrifice of His only Son, again Jesus…an even more amazing miracle. The donkey in both miracles played minor roles, but no matter how minor, they still were essential in how both miracles played out in history. Kitchen upgrades is the donkey in our CMG Grant story that will lead to miracles of healing, acceptance and inclusion through meaningful connections with others over meals. Half of the grant we received from The Center for Congregations pertains to kitchen upgrades. CtK will need to raise matching funds in order to actually afford to purchase the appliances, dishes, carts and a water purification system. At the same time, Church Council and members of the congregation believe it is time to do more than replace appliances. They believe it is time to look into the future and make and implement plans to expand capacity of our existing kitchen for future growth of our congregation and programs. A Kitchen Team has been established to work through the details to create kitchen upgrade and expansion plans. The members of the team are Ruth Nieboer, Charlotte O’Dell, Judy Fredine, Lynn Figg, Lin Burns, Matt Douhan and Tom Jordan. The team initially is tasked with defining how the kitchen is to be utilized, consider kitchen layout and design principles and establishing plans and a budget. Past kitchen upgrade and expansion plans will be considered like those developed through the INTO Campaign. A phased approach will be developed that will allow the elements identified in the CMG Grant application to be added to the existing layout of the kitchen with minor building modifications. The ultimate goal will be expanding and making the work flow of the kitchen more efficient and useful including the CMG Grant kitchen upgrade elements. Let’s get back to the donkey and remember that kitchen upgrades play a minor role in our CMG Grant story. They are needed to carry the more important pillars of the overarching CMG Grant strategy. Building connections and relationships with others over a meal is where true and amazing miracles of healing, acceptance and inclusion will occur.

BROADWAY CHRISTIAN PARISH – HATS AND MITTENS NEEDED Broadway Christian Parish gives hats and mittens to anyone in the community at any time. As cold weather approaches, they see an increase in need. Last year, our church donated hats and gloves to this cause, and we are committed to doing it again. Please consider purchasing new hats and gloves/mittens for people of all ages and place them in the box in the narthex. Help us reach our goal of giving 100 items to Broadway Christian.

Spotlight On Mission & Ministry
Small Group living the mission during the holiday season A small group at CtK celebrates Advent in a different way each year. Last year, instead of the typical book study, they researched and discussed the history of Advent, the meaning of the Advent wreath and Advent traditions. This year, they decided to spend their time together living our mission, loving and serving the world. The first week of Advent, the ladies gathered together and caroled at St. Paul’s Senior Living Community. This idea was formed when a group member shared her experience singing with the choir at the memory unit for God’s Work. Our Hands. She found this rewarding, because even those who are nonverbal showed such joy at their singing. The residents were thrilled to have the carolers come and sang along with the Christmas tunes. For the second week of Advent, the group partnered with the CtK Angel Tree. They purchased many of the gifts for the youth staying at Oaklawn Youth Residential Center, wrapped the gifts together at the church and then delivered them to Oaklawn. The final week, the ladies volunteered at Cultivate Culinary. Again, during God’s Work. Our Hands. a member of this small group made meals at CC. She shared her joy from that day and the group decided to make this their final event of the Advent season. Together, the ladies prepared 364 meals that will be given to the food insecure in our community. After each Advent activity, the group shared a meal together. This is exactly what our new grant focuses on, forming meaningful relationships over food. In 2020, our congregation and the groups that make up the fabric of CtK are going to be challenged to consider how we can do this same thing. Perhaps groups you are a part of will decide to love and serve the world together and follow the activity with a shared meal; thereby, also building meaningful relationships over food.

Trinity Memorial Garden at CtK
At a person’s death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn and remembers the brevity of life on earth. At a funeral we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. Trusting in God’s promise in baptism that we are claimed by Christ forever, we rest in the sure hope of resurrection. When the church gathers to mark the end of life, Christ crucified and risen is the witness of worship, the strength of mutual consolation, and the hope of healing. (ELW, p. 279) In the past it was common to have a graveyard next to your place of worship. In recent days it has been customary to have your remains in a cemetery away from the church. If you are not aware CtK does have a columbarium on property. The word columbarium is derived from the Latin word “columba” meaning “dove”. Columbarium is another word for “dovecote”, a structure used to house doves. The Trinity Memorial Garden Columbarium of Christ the King Lutheran Church was established to fulfill a desire to provide a reverent place of repose and memorialization in the tradition of churchyard burial. As a ministry of Christ the King Lutheran Church, it is intended as a place of interment within niches or an ash garden for the cremated remains. With a columbarium, the church can once again offer its members a final homecoming. For centuries, it has been the obligation of the church to serve its congregation from baptism to death. Although earth burial on church grounds is no longer feasible for most churches, the desire to continue this sacred rite still remains. Our columbarium does revive the ministry of offering a rightful place at the church. It also comforts the living with the knowledge that we too will be welcomed home to the church. Provisions – The Trinity Memorial Garden Niche allows for either a single or companion (shared) niche.

Stewardship Stew
Should We Stew About General Fund Giving? ‘Tis the season for budgeting. In preparation for the Congregation meeting, Lin Burns, our Financial Secretary, has been tabulating our Estimate of Giving cards and making educated guesses to determine the anticipated income for 2020. At the same time, the Finance committee, Council, and staff have been estimating expenses for the 2020 year. When the income and expenses were put together into an initial budget, there was a large gap. The Council and staff were asked to take another look at their estimates to find places to cut expenses. As a result of this process, we’re now looking at a budget deficit of approximately $20,000. The Stewardship of Life committee challenged everyone to prayerfully consider growing their contribution, either by dollar amount or by percent. Very few families accepted the challenge. We know that contributing the same amount as last year is the easy thing to do, but church expenses keep going up. Our contributions to the General Fund ensure the financial support for our ministries. Our Lord has certainly blessed our congregation through its fifty years, and our members have a history of rising to challenges (when the church burned, when we expanded our building, when we needed a new air conditioner, when we paid off the mortgage, when we committed to becoming more missional, etc.). In comparison, this new challenge is a small one. Now we’re asking that each of us take another look at our estimate of giving for 2020. If each family contributes an additional $2.00 each week, the initial budget--before any cuts were made--could be funded. If each family contributed an additional $1.00 a week, the budget after cuts could be funded. We are blessed to be a blessing. God has entrusted us with great material wealth compared to the rest of the world. As the Stewardship of Life committee works to con-tact people who have not yet turned in an Estimate of Giving card, you can help with a slight increase in your general fund giving. Please consider what your family can do to help us meet this challenge.
~Thank you, and thanks be to God! The Stewardship of Life Committee

Movie fans unite! Are you interested in film, faith, and/or fellowship? The Adult Faith Formation Committee is currently exploring the idea of a movie group here at CtK. Inspired by the book Movies Are Prayers by Josh Larsen, participants would meet once a month to watch a popular Hollywood film and discuss how it offers a response to the two great questions we ask God each day: “What do I make of this place?” and “Why am I here?” Larsen’s list of suggested films runs the gamut, from family-friendly fare to classic cinema to more challenging, topical films. Is there a particular movie you’d like to discuss? Would you be interested in participating or perhaps even leading a session? What days and times work best for you? Please share your thoughts with Sarah Felde ([email protected]) and we’ll move forward from there. Thank you for considering this new, nontraditional way of reflecting on questions of faith while enjoying some fun with your CtK family!
Calling all Euchre players Every third Friday of the month, euchre players are invited to gather in room 504 for an evening of card playing from 7:00—9:00 p.m. This will be an informal evening, no prizes just playing for fun and fellowship.
