From the President…

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2014 Colorado Music Educators As-sociation Clinic/Conference at the incomparable Broadmoor Hotel. What you are about to experi-ence spans more than a year in the planning. Over the course of the next three days you will have the opportunity to learn and be inspired by ensembles and clinicians that are known and recognized nationally and internationally. The lion’s share of the work for these clinics and performances has fallen on the backs of your elected council members. The chairs and chair-elects for the General Music, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and College and University Music Councils have tirelessly designed three days of professional development with YOU in mind. Please find a time over the course of your conference to thank them for their dedication to CMEA. The opening session of the 2014 conference will certainly start our conference with a shot of inspiration. This ses-sion will feature the popular vocal ensemble, Up With People followed by the conference keynote provided by Mr. Larry Livingston from the University of Southern California. As you build your conference schedule you will want to make note of the General Session at 11:00 on Friday. This presentation will address the critical issues related to SB191 and help guide educators through the matters centering on teacher evaluation and student growth measures. Our goal is to give you a compass in navigating this uncharted territory. I encourage everyone to return to the International Center on both Friday and Saturday night to be a part of each spectacular concert event. The world renowned guitarist, Earl Klugh will perform on Thursday night and the Real Vocal String Quartet will be performing on Friday night. Each night will begin by recognizing a number of honorees including our 2014 class of Hall of Fame Inductees; Michelle Ewer, Cindy McCaskill, Fred Selby and Ken Singleton. Our conference would not be possible without the work of Ken Anderson and the support of our conference exhibi-tors. Please find a meaningful amount of time in your three days to visit the exhibits and support these dedicated individ-uals and companies. 2014 marks the second year our conference and the NAMM conference occur on the same weekend. The CMEA exhibitors have made an intentional commitment to be with us in Colorado this weekend. Please honor them with your time. Speaking of commitments, just by your presence at the 2014 conference you have made a commitment to your person-al professional development. Take advantage of every opportunity to grow from the sessions, concerts, and the network-ing with your professional colleagues. Make this experience count! Your dedication to this professional development will ultimately transfer to an even richer experience for your kids. Thank you for your dedication! Thank you for your professionalism! Thank you for your attendance! Have a great conference!!!

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Clinic Main Ballroom I One Is Too Small a Number To Achieve Something Great Marcia Neel, Clinician Presiding: Nancy Allwein, Colorado ASTA President-Elect Sponsored by: CMEA and Flesher Hinton Music

From the custodian who sets up chairs for the Open House per-formance, to the engineer who turns on the lights in the football stadium, to the counselor who helps to finalize a student’s schedule in order for him to participate, to the parent who agrees to meet you at the venue with extra uniform pieces, to the principal who agrees to introduce your ensemble at the concert and everyone else in between, reaching out is the ONLY way to achieve something great. We must ALL work together as ONE TEAM and surround ourselves with those who CARE to help us achieve our goal—to guarantee success for EVERY student in the music program.

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Clinic Colorado Hall F I Why Music is Basic: The Value of Music Education Bruce Pearson, Clinician Presiding: Dennis Sullivan, IMC Chair Sponsored by: Neil Kjos Music Company

The value of music education is being questioned like never before. Music educators must accept the challenge of educating the public. Educating the parents of our students in the value of music educa-tion is equally as important as the education we do in the classroom. Dr. Pearson will discuss important research about why music should be a part of every child’s education.

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Clinic Broadmoor F V Creating a Culture Of Music Literacy In Our Colorado Choirs: Curricula Standardization And Integration Jill Burleson Burgett, Clinician Presiding: John Garner, Vocal Council Chair

The purpose of this session is to initiate a dialogue within our choral education community about ways in which we can bring a standard-ized approach to teaching music literacy to singers in our school choirs. While students are receiving instruction in music literacy, systems, materials, and approaches used vary significantly from school to school, even in schools from within the same district.  This session addresses the need for system-wide articulation regard-ing music literacy curricula, standardization of solfege systems, counting and sight singing methods used by our choirs, and ways in which we can integrate them on a more global level within our state. Suggestions will be made not only for integrating the curricula vertically throughout the school district, but also horizontal align-ment with peer institutions within the district, including horizontal alignment between districts state-wide.  Rationale will be presented addressing the need for standardization, along with suggested strate-gies for the successful implementation of such programs.

In Memory of Frank G. Montera

Mark your calendars! Two pieces commissioned and composed in memory of Frank Montera will be premiered in the spring of 2015.

Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 7:00 pm Palmer High School Auditorium

Terry Landry will write the jazz piece. He is a 1976 Palmer HS graduate. He currently makes his living being amazing with the saxophone (See? It is possible!). He has most graciously, and vehemently, declined to accept any payment for this. Thank you, Terry! Check out his website: http://terrylandry.virb.com/t

Samuel Hazo is writing the concert piece: http://www.samuelrhazo.com/ He charges $1650 per minute of finished music, with a $750 engraving fee. He is writing a four-minute, Grade 4 piece.

Therefore, we are trying to raise $7350.00 to pay for it

To contribute (please!) to this project through PayPal go to http://www.eramontera.com/donation.html

Click on either “Donation” or “Add to Shopping Cart” and a popup window will appear. Enlarge the popup window, or it won’t make much sense.

We chose $20 increments. You can make a contribution in any amount you choose. No amount is too small!

What value do we place on things like effort, achieve-ment, skill, attitude and attendance? What responsibilities do we assume when constructing our grading systems--and to whom are we responsible? Hear from a panel of teachers from throughout Colorado regarding how they grade, and join us for a conversation where we will discuss practical and philosophical concerns regard-ing this important component of our work.

12:40-1:40 p.m. Clinic Colorado Hall F U I All the Information In One Spot? Teaching with lead sheets in the band and orchestra rehearsal to improve sight-reading and ensemble-wide comprehension Erik Johnson and Brian Floyd, Clinicians Presiding: Joe Martin, University of Denver

This session’s goal will be to demonstrate how to create and use one-page “lead sheets” as a tool to increase full-ensemble engage-ment and individual understanding of a wide variety of musical concepts. Specifically, session attendees will be given teacher-created lead sheets and walked through the process of using them in a “live rehearsal” with orchestra students from Blevins Middle School in Fort Collins. Each lead sheet will contain unique elements inher-ent to each piece including melody, rhythm, articulation/bowing, harmony, tonality, musical terms, form, composition, and improvi-sation. Ultimately, the goal is for attendees to leave with a new way to help their students perform challenging literature at a high level more quickly by providing a tool to develop technical facility and a comprehensive understanding of the music they perform.

Last year, we enjoyed a spirited discussion about the controversial September 2011 MEJ article “The Elephant in the Room.” Clearly, our bands, choirs and orchestras offer important musical experi-ences to students throughout Colorado - they aren’t obsolete by any measure! But what more can be done? What “21st century skills” must ensembles impart - or have we been doing this all along? How must we change, or how can we better articulate what we already teach as it relates to the musical needs of our young citizens? Join us as we continue the conversation!

Choirs learn, internalize, and repeat in performance what they do most often in rehearsal. Good choral pedagogy includes both the separation and integration of the technical aspects of the music, and the articulation of the music’s artistic and expressive content. The session will focus on the specific ways that teaching the expres-sive elements of music - including but not limited to phrase shape and direction, word stress and accentuation, and structure and mu-sical form, at the beginning of the rehearsal process can complement the music learning process and result in better, more engaging musi-cal performances. 2:30-3:30 p.m. Clinic Broadmoor Hall F V I Just the Facts: Breathing For Choral and Wind Musicians Melissa Malde, Clinician Presiding: Teri Wilmarth, VMC District 2 Representative

Why is breathing for musicians fraught with so much anxiety and associated with so many myths? Although the anatomical structures used in breathing are essentially the same for everyone, they can be coordinated in different ways. Consequently, there are almost as many breathing methods as there are musicians. This can be confus-ing and frustrating. This workshop does not promote any method; instead it will help singers and wind players demystify the move-ments of breathing, identifying the structures involved with hands-on, practical exercises.  Once these structures are mapped, partici-pants will be able to make educated choices about breathing.

In recent years, scientists have revealed a great deal about music and the mind, but popular understanding and belief about the benefits of music are often very misinformed. 2:30-3:30 p.m. Clinic Colorado Hall F U Current Trends in Music Technology: Tales from the Boulder Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk) John Gunther, Clinician Presiding: Leila Heil, University of Colorado

The emergence of the laptop orchestra in the last several years has given performers and composers innovative tools for creating novel musical experiences. The Boulder Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk) inte-grates technology with musicians in an ensemble setting providing live interaction between the two. The ensemble consists of each performer equipped with a laptop, a hemispherical speaker, and a variety of control devices, which can include MIDI controllers, video game accessories, bodily movement, or voice. The use of hemispherical speakers projects sound in a way similar to that of an acoustic instrument, which allows musicians to hear and interact with each other without monitors or headphones. Compositions by students and faculty explore the application of traditional sound processing technology as well as the integration of computer pro-grams such as Ableton Live, MAX, Jitter and Super Collider.

Here are some simple, time-effective ways principals can assist their school’s music educators:

Create and Foster an Environment of Support• Study the ways that music education develops

creativity, enhances cooperative learning, instills disciplined work habits, and correlates with gains in standardized test scores.

• Provide adequate funding for instruments and music education materials.

• Make certain that your school has a fully staffed faculty of certified music teachers.

Communicate Constructively• Make statistical studies and research supporting

the value of music education available to other administrators and school boards.

• Encourage music teachers to support their cause by writing articles in local newspapers, professional journals, or by blogging online about the value of music education.

• Share your students’ successes with district colleagues. Include articles in school and district newsletters to communicate the value of music in a student’s education.

Principals and school boards have the ability to substantially aid music educators in their quest to enrich children’s minds through music. Fos-tering a strong music program will help them achieve their goals as a leader in the education community, and, most of all, will aid the growth and development of children in their school.

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to teach correct language pronunciation (both our native language and foreign) to our singers, and to unify choral tone, is through the implementation of the Inter-national Phonetic Alphabet.  In this session, we will explore simple strategies for getting comfortable with IPA as conductors, and ways in which to teach IPA to our singers in proactive, practical, and fun ways.  The session will include sources, handouts, teaching plans, worksheets and suggested teaching aids to facilitate successful IPA implementation.

8:00-8:50 a.m. Clinic Jones Room (Golf Club) I The Cognitive Science of Musical Skill: How Our Brains Learn to “Do” Music Steven Parker, Clinician Presiding: Casey Cropp, IMC District 3 Representative

Why is it that some musical skills are so hard to learn, while others are a breeze? Why can my students remember pieces/songs from 3 years ago, but apparently cannot remember from Monday to Tues-day? What is the “10,000 hour rule” and what does it mean for my teaching? For music teachers of all levels, this session draws from the latest research in cognitive psychology & neuroscience on human training and expertise to present empirically based approaches to acquisition, durability, and transferability of musical skills. Specific topics will include: where to best focus student attention, the critical role of feedback timing, how to efficiently space practice repeti-tions, how and when to use mental rehearsal, and the pros and cons of “over learning.” By the end of this session, attendees will receive materials, and have a clear understanding of numerous pedagogical strategies that leverage innate brain processes for efficient teaching and learning.

This Session is designed to give college students and new teachers some tips and tricks on how to succeed in the music class room their first years. Versatility and being open-minded are critical to the first years success. Michael uses his own story to enlighten, inspire and help prepare new teachers taking over a music program. I want to share the success and failures of my first years as a music educator to help those who just got into the field. Teaching multiple areas of music is becoming more common and knowing what to expect will help other to be more successful.Participants will leave the sessions with strategies for teaching unexpected areas, program building ideas, and establishing positive healthy relationships with administrators, colleagues, students and parents.
