CME Welcome from the Head of Centre

Welcome to The Centre for Macquarie English (CME), Macquarie University’s on-campus English language centre. CME has been one of the world’s premier English language centres for over 20 years. Today, well over 3,000 students graduate every year with the greatest prospects of success in their studies, life overseas and career. This success, your success, is our mission!

We achieve this mission by being leaders in the industry with the latest and most advanced teaching methods available today, plus our experience in supporting your success.

Studying at a prestigious university is challenging

and can be stressful. This is much more challenging for you where your English

language training does not include the language

from the field you are studying. Our range of university entry courses are amongst the very few in Australia or the world that offer students academic study in the specific genres, vocabulary and concepts that will help them succeed in their chosen degrees.

Today, much of the communication you will make in English will be online. As CME

is the leader in the area of blended learning, our

integrated classroom/online programs will extend your learning well beyond the classroom. The result is that you will communicate much more frequently, be more confident and be much better prepared for the increasingly online environments of university and the workplace.

By studying with CME you will receive a stress-

free introduction to studies at Macquarie University, and you will experience student life on the Macquarie

University campus from the very start. You will be

introduced right from the start to the skills and resources that you will need to succeed in your future studies at Macquarie University.

Our caring and highly qualified teachers and student support staff are committed to helping you achieve success and to have a trouble-free transition to studying in Australia.

Our students tell us that by studying at CME, they make close friendships with fellow students and are already familiar with the campus – which almost becomes an extension of their homes. By the time they reach university, they have settled into life in Australia; they have found accommodation with friends and explored the local shopping centres, restaurants, sporting venues and cinemas. In short, they are ready for a successful future at Macquarie University!

When I look back at my last year here, there are many points about CME that I like. The most important one is making friends who come from different continents. Also the teachers are quite important to me, they are professionally developed and well experienced, and they work hand in hand not only to improve the student’s ability for major tasks, but also to prepare students for their academic future at university. If I had started university directly, I am sure that my life would have been more stressful. But because I went to CME, I was aware of the system of Macquarie University. Moreover, CME did more than just teach me English, it introduced me to the Australian lifestyle and helped me to cope with living so far away from home.

When I came to CME it was just my 3rd month in an English speaking country. My English was quite poor and I had narrow knowledge about international system. CME was absolutely helpful for me not only in case of improving my vocabulary and grammar skills but also the course helped me to understand the complicated structure of modern international system. The program of course that was created by skilled professional and patient teachers has helped me to be well prepared for study in an Australian University.

Having completed the Translation and Interpreting Preparation Program (TIPP) at CME, I realise how useful the skills I developed in the TIPP program are in my current studies in the Master of Translation and Interpreting Degree at Macquarie University. In particular, the note-taking activities, making presentations and pronunciation practice I did in the TIPP class are very helpful in my Masters program. At CME my teachers’ detailed feedback on my writing has also helped me to be much more accurate in my written assignments. I very much enjoyed studying with great teachers and great classmates at CME on the beautiful Macquarie University campus!

Being a student from a non English speaking country, the very experienced teachers and staff of CME gave me more confidence to use English for academic purposes in the university fluently. Not only did I improve my English skills, I benefitted from the multicultural experience of learning English with international students from many different countries, which I have never done before coming to CME.

There are free English conversation classes available, providing students with the opportunity to practise their spoken English in a supportive, informal setting, enhancing their speaking skills and increasing their confidence in conversational English.

academic and personal support by Student advisorsWe recognise that international students can face a range of unique challenges that may impact on learning. To help students through these issues we have caring and experienced Student Advisors

who are available to talk through a wide range of issues. Many students experience homesickness, culture shock, class attendance, academic progress or accommodation concerns. These are easily addressed at CME, but in some cases, students are referred to the professional counsellors, doctors and welfare staff at Campus Wellbeing within Macquarie University.

CME Student support services

Studying at CME has been great! They have given me the right tools to improve my writing and speaking abilities in English to enter university and reach my target. Also, the teachers and the staff are fabulous, being a great help at any moment. In addition, there are plenty of resources in the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) to improve your language and learn more on your own. Finally, studying at Macquarie University is such an amazing experience, full of resources and facilities with a great multicultural background!

accommodationStudents are responsible for booking their own accommodation. It is essential that accommodation is organised before you leave home. There are different accommodation options available at CME to suit your needs.

University housingThe university has self catering apartments and residential colleges.

Homestay Some students prefer to choose Homestay accommodation. This involves living with an Australian family. It includes accommodation in your own bedroom with a private or shared bathroom, and use of the lounge and dining areas of the house. Breakfast and dinner are provided every day and are eaten with the family. The accommodation is within a reasonable distance from CME – up to 20 minutes by public transport. Homestay offers students a safe and supportive environment and is often a good first step into a new country. Homestay placements are usually for a minimum of one month and can then be extended.

We would recommend that you choose from the agencies listed on our website as they have a consistent and proven standard of care.

Private rentalsYou can organise to rent your own private accommodation – an apartment or house. You should take care in

choosing your accommodation. There are laws in Australia to protect your rights as a tenant. Seek assistance from an International Student Advisor at CME for details on these or if you experience any difficulty. For more information about renting in Sydney, please see accommodation.mq.edu.au

Student experienceOur student body comes from over 50 countries. This diversity makes CME a culturally interesting and inspiring place to study. Within the Australian environment, students have the chance to make friendships that may last a lifetime with classmates from around the world.

At CME, many opportunities are provided for you to be involved in a range of social and cultural experiences, because we recognise that students get the most out of their experience in Australia by learning English in a variety of situations.

On Orientation Day at CME students are introduced to mentors who are CME or Macquarie University students. We provide mentors who speak a variety of languages, as we understand that on your first day, you may have questions that are easier to ask in your first language.

Once classes begin, CME provides a range of extracurricular activities for students. These may include social, cultural and sporting events.

Students Under 18CME welcomes students 17 years and older. Students under the age of 17 can also be accepted, but only with package offers with SIBT. For these students, we provide special support because, under Australian law, all people under the age of 18 are considered to be minors. We want our younger students to be safe and happy in their accommodation, and to make good progress with their English language study, so CME provides regular group meetings with an advisor to discuss any problems.

Students under 18 must live with parents or a legal guardian while they are in Australia. CME’s approved Homestay Agencies can arrange guardianship and accommodation. This involves living in the home of an Australian family.

CME IELTS Test Centre and courses

I have never used such a wonderful course. There are four Modules and they have allowed me to know and learn more. Particularly, in the Writing Module, it was useful to see examples of essays. In the Speaking Module it was useful to see the progression of the whole Interwiev and being able to hear the Interview as well as view the Transcript simultaneously, was very helpful. The “Language Focus” section helped me to refresh and improve my knowledge of Grammar. I highly recommend this Master IELTS course for people who would like to improve their own score on the IELTS test and their General English also.

Australia is one of the world’s favourite destinations for education. Sydney and surrounding regions offer world-class study options for local and overseas students to learn English.

There’s no place in the world like Sydney!Studying at Macquarie University gives you the opportunity to experience life in Sydney, named the “World’s Best City” eight times by Travel and Leisure magazine. Sydney is a cosmopolitan world-class city surrounded by beautiful beaches, World Heritage areas, lush hinterland and the acclaimed wine regions of the state of New South Wales.

In addition to all the excitement a large, cosmopolitan city has to offer, Sydney is the ideal environment in which to study. The city is scenic, with a mild, temperate climate. From Macquarie University, you can get to most of Sydney’s famous tourist attractions such as the Opera

House, the Harbour Bridge, the historic Rocks area, and Bondi and Manly beaches by public transport, including trains, buses and ferries.

Sydney is a multicultural city where you can experience the food, entertainment and customs of many cultures. It is the gateway to Australia and offers more entertainment, shopping and sightseeing than any other Australian city.

Sydney is renowned for being one of the world’s most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities.

• Sydney is Australia’s largest and most diverse city. Choose the lifestyle, activities, cost and accommodation that suit you!

• 2010 Mercer Quality of Living Survey: Sydney was ranked as the 10th most liveable city in the world, substantially better ranked than any other Australian city

• Australia is one of the safest countries in the world and a welcoming place to study.

Also known as the Harbour City, Sydney is home to Australia’s best shopping, restaurants, entertainment and sporting

venues. If you prefer the great outdoors, the city has more than 70 beaches along its eastern coastline, the scenic Blue Mountains to the west, and national parks to the north and south. It is also a short drive away from the vineyards of the Hunter Valley and the skiing fields of the Snowy Mountains.

You will be sure to find your own favourite parts of Sydney, but these are some things that you should not miss:

• Climbing the Opera House steps to appreciate the full majesty of those massive sails up close

• Taking a ferry from Circular Quay to famous Manly Beach for a day of swimming, sunbathing or strolling along the busy oceanfront streets

• Watching a live sporting game, from cricket to rugby to horse racing – it’s a national obsession! Or take part in a sport yourself – you could even learn to surf

• Grab your friends for a barbecue at the beach or in one of Sydney’s many national parks

• Explore the Sydney Harbour Bridge from every angle: walk across the bridge for the best view of the Harbour (and it’s free!), or look down on it from the city’s highest point, Sydney Tower. At night it is lit up, and on New Year’s Eve it is alive with fireworks.

Q What is a Package Offer?

A A package offer is an offer to study English and your degree program with MQ or SIBT. If you have decided on your future study plans at MQ or SIBT you can simply apply directly to MI (international.mq.edu.au) or SIBT(sibt.nsw.edu.au) with evidence of your English level. They will assess the number of weeks of English you require and suggest a start date for your English program to coincide with university semester dates. With a package offer you will have the benefit of having a reserved place in your course at MQ or SIBT.

Q What is an English only offer?

A If you would like to study English only, or if you do not yet know your future study plans, you can apply directly to CME. You can provide evidence of your English level before you arrive or do a placement test on orientation day. You can apply online at cme.mq.edu.au/apply

Q What is a conditional offer?

A You have been offered a place at MQ but have not yet met the English requirements of entry to the course. You can show your English proficiency in two ways, either by doing and IELTS test or by studying at CME and passing a University Entry Program (UEP). As part of your application process if you provide evidence of your English language level we will assess the number of weeks of study you require.

Q When can I start to study? What are the course dates?

A Our courses begin every 5 weeks. Please refer to the calendar on page 18 for the course dates. Please note that different countries have limitations or regulations as to the number of weeks of English you are able to study. You should refer to the relevant Australian agency in your country.

Q I want to apply for a student visa. How do I get a COE (Confirmation of Enrolment)?

A Firstly apply to study at CME then we will email an offer to you.

After you have accepted your offer and paid your fees you will get a CoE. You can take this to the relevant Australian authority to apply for a student visa.

Q I have a tourist/working holiday visa, do I need a COE and how many weeks can I study?

A CoE is not required for students studying while on a tourist visa or working holiday visa. However there are limitations to the number of weeks you are able to study depending on your nationality. If you plan to study for more weeks than your visa allows you will need to apply to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for a student visa.
