Welcome to The Centre for Macquarie English (CME), Macquarie University’s on-campus English language centre. CME has been one of the world’s premier English language centres for over 20 years. Today, well over 3,000 students graduate every year with the greatest prospects of success in their studies, life overseas and career. This success, your success, is our mission!

from the field you are studying. Our range of university entry courses are amongst the very few in Australia or the world that offer students academic study in the specific genres, vocabulary and concepts that will help them succeed in their chosen degrees.

Today, much of the communication you will make in English will be online. As CME

The Centre for Macquarie English (CME) is the English language centre of Macquarie University, located in the centre of Macquarie University’s beautiful and spacious campus in North Ryde in Sydney, Australia.

CME & MQUniversity Entry Preparation Program for Business, Accounting and Economics (BAE)BAE is a 10-week university entry English preparation program for international students who will study undergraduate and postgraduate university degrees within the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University. Students graduating from this program will be able to enter directly into their Business, Economic or Accounting degrees at Macquarie University without taking the IELTS test.

The content of this program has been based on the academic requirements and topics set by the professors and lecturers of this faculty.

When I look back at my last year here, there are many points about CME that I like. The most important one is making friends who come from different continents. Also the teachers are quite important to me, they are professionally developed and well experienced, and they work hand in hand not only to improve the student’s ability for major tasks, but also to prepare students for their academic future at university. If I had started university directly, I am sure that my life would have been more stressful. But because I went to CME, I was aware of the system of Macquarie University. Moreover, CME did more than just teach me English, it introduced me to the Australian lifestyle and helped me to cope with living so far away from home.

Having completed the Translation and Interpreting Preparation Program (TIPP) at CME, I realise how useful the skills I developed in the TIPP program are in my current studies in the Master of Translation and Interpreting Degree at Macquarie University. In particular, the note-taking activities, making presentations and pronunciation practice I did in the TIPP class are very helpful in my Masters program. Social and recreational activities feeThis fee covers the range of educational, social and cultural activities offered to students throughout their enrolment. This may include a tour of Sydney’s iconic sights, a party night or team challenge. We also have visiting specialists such as Aboriginal performers, Australian wildlife experts or cultural dance groups.

Course materials feeThis fee covers all printed course notes, e-learning support materials and unlimited wireless internet access at the university for 2010. Students are not required to buy text books or other materials. In 2011 this fee is included in the tuition cost.

OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)The Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires all international students and their families in Australia have health insurance cover while on a student visa in Australia. Your OSHC will help to pay for any medical and hospital care you may need in Australia. It will also contribute to the cost of medicine and ambulance services in an emergency.

OSHC does not cover services such as dental or optical care. Additional insurance may be purchased to cover these services.

OSHC must cover the period of enrolment plus one month, so, if you need to extend your course, you must also arrange additional health cover.

You are able to choose from several companies that offer OSHC. CME’s preferred provider is OSHC Worldcare (oshcworldcare.com.au). in TESOL (with TESOL in Practice and Advanced English program) This program is for teachers with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English (IELTS 7 Academic module or equivalent) wanting a stronger focus on TESOL theory and formal classroom teaching practice. This program is run by CME along with the prestigious Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University and comprises one unit of their Post Graduate Certificate in TESOL. In addition, teachers will receive the added benefit of developing their English language and practical TESOL skills from CME’s experienced teaching professionals.Note: This program begins in January 2011.

TESOL programsCME offers two TESOL programs tailored to the needs and interests of language teachers. Both programs are delivered by highly qualified and experienced TESOL professionals and are ideal for both current English teachers and trainee English teachers. The methodology targets teaching to adults and young adults; however, primary and secondary school teachers can consider how to apply these methodologies to younger learners.

Both TESOL programs are open to individual and group enrolments.

Program 1: TESOL Methodology in ContextTESOL in Practice and Intermediate English Program (with TESOL Methodology lectures and class observations) This program is for teachers with an intermediate level of English (IELTS 4.5 - 6.5 Academic module or equivalent) wanting to:

• observe and experience firsthand current methodologies in adult TESOL classes

• reflect on how these methodologies could be applied to their own teaching context

• improve their English language skills.

This 4-week course, with an average of 20 hours face-to-face instruction per week with experienced CME TESOL teachers, plus classroom observations, includes:

• TESOL Methodology: 3 hours of lectures per week on current TESOL methodology (based on current theory)

• TESOL in Practice: 9 hours per week of:

– applying current methodologies to your teaching (including developing a lesson plan to use with your own students when you return)

– learning English that will be useful in the classroom e.g. instructions, feedback

There are free English conversation classes available, providing students with the opportunity to practise their spoken English in a supportive, informal setting, enhancing their speaking skills and increasing their confidence in conversational English.

accommodationStudents are responsible for booking their own accommodation. It is essential that accommodation is organised before you leave home. There are different accommodation options available at CME to suit your needs.

University housingThe university has self catering apartments and residential colleges.

Homestay Some students prefer to choose Homestay accommodation. This involves living with an Australian family. It includes accommodation in your own bedroom with a private or shared bathroom, and use of the lounge and dining areas of the house. Breakfast and dinner are provided every day and are eaten with the family. The accommodation is within a reasonable distance from CME – up to 20 minutes by public transport. Homestay offers students a safe and supportive environment and is often a good first step into a new country. Homestay placements are usually for a minimum of one month and can then be extended.

We would recommend that you choose from the agencies listed on our website as they have a consistent and proven standard of care.

Private rentalsYou can organise to rent your own private accommodation – an apartment or house. You should take care in

At CME, many opportunities are provided for you to be involved in a range of social and cultural experiences, because we recognise that students get the most out of their experience in Australia by learning English in a variety of situations.

On Orientation Day at CME students are introduced to mentors who are CME or Macquarie University students. We provide mentors who speak a variety of languages, as we understand that on your first day, you may have questions that are easier to ask in your first language.

Once classes begin, CME provides a range of extracurricular activities for students. These may include social, cultural and sporting events.

Students Under 18CME welcomes students 17 years and older. Students under the age of 17 can also be accepted, but only with package offers with SIBT. For these students, we provide special support because, under Australian law, all people under the age of 18 are considered to be minors. We want our younger students to be safe and happy in their accommodation, and to make good progress with their English language study, so CME provides regular group meetings with an advisor to discuss any problems.

Students under 18 must live with parents or a legal guardian while they are in Australia. CME’s approved Homestay Agencies can arrange guardianship and accommodation. This involves living in the home of an Australian family.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is a globally recognised English language proficiency test designed to assess the English language ability of international candidates. The results are used by educational and professional bodies, and in visa application processes.

I have never used such a wonderful course. There are four Modules and they have allowed me to know and learn more. Particularly, in the Writing Module, it was useful to see examples of essays. In the Speaking Module it was useful to see the progression of the whole Interwiev and being able to hear the Interview as well as view the Transcript simultaneously, was very helpful. The “Language Focus” section helped me to refresh and improve my knowledge of Grammar. Q What is a Package Offer?

A A package offer is an offer to study English and your degree program with MQ or SIBT. If you have decided on your future study plans at MQ or SIBT you can simply apply directly to MI (international.mq.edu.au) or SIBT(sibt.nsw.edu.au) with evidence of your English level. They will assess the number of weeks of English you require and suggest a start date for your English program to coincide with university semester dates. With a package offer you will have the benefit of having a reserved place in your course at MQ or SIBT.

Q What is an English only offer?

A If you would like to study English only, or if you do not yet know your future study plans, you can apply directly to CME. You can provide evidence of your English level before you arrive or do a placement test on orientation day. You can apply online at cme.mq.edu.au/apply

Q What is a conditional offer?

A You have been offered a place at MQ but have not yet met the English requirements of entry to the course. You can show your English proficiency in two ways, either by doing and IELTS test or by studying at CME and passing a University Entry Program (UEP). As part of your application process if you provide evidence of your English language level we will assess the number of weeks of study you require.

Q When can I start to study? What are the course dates?

A Our courses begin every 5 weeks. Please refer to the calendar on page 18 for the course dates. Please note that different countries have limitations or regulations as to the number of weeks of English you are able to study. You should refer to the relevant Australian agency in your country.

Q I want to apply for a student visa. How do I get a COE (Confirmation of Enrolment)?

A Firstly apply to study at CME then we will email an offer to you.

After you have accepted your offer and paid your fees you will get a CoE. You can take this to the relevant Australian authority to apply for a student visa.

Q I have a tourist/working holiday visa, do I need a COE and how many weeks can I study?

A CoE is not required for students studying while on a tourist visa or working holiday visa. However there are limitations to the number of weeks you are able to study depending on your nationality. If you plan to study for more weeks than your visa allows you will need to apply to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for a student visa.

Applying for an offer

Either CME, Macquarie International or

SIBT will issue you an Offer Letter. If you

are going to study English only, CME

will issue the Offer Letter according to

the number of weeks that you have

requested.

You will receive your Letter of offer within

2 working days.

If you are going to study a Macquarie

University degree following your English

course, Macquarie International will

issue a Package Offer, and your English

study period will be determined by our

assessment of your English level. Please

apply directly at international.mq.edu.au

Accepting your offer

Once you have received the Offer Letter,

please complete the Acceptance Advice

document and arrange payment.

To confirm and finalise your enrolment

return the Acceptance advice with proof

of payment to CME before the payment

due date stated in your Offer Letter.

Confirming your enrolment

You will then receive your Confirmation

of Enrolment (CoE). This document is

required by the Australian Immigration

authorities in order to issue a student visa.
