Meets the requirements for American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR or American Heart Association Basic Life Support for those who work in emergency services, health care, and other professional areas. Material presented in the course includes basic patient assessment, basic airway management, and rescue breathing and CPR for infant, child, and adult patients.

Introduces basic principles of nutrition with emphasis on personal nutrition.

Prepares the student for certification in CPR and basic first aid. Skills will include basic life support, airway obstruction, control of bleeding, shock, and patient care for the unconscious.

This is an American Heart Association Blended Learning course. Part One, the knowledge portion of the course, is completed online and Part Two, the skill session, is completed in person with an instructor during the scheduled hours for the class. Students must contact the instructor to schedule their 2.5 hour skill testing time slot and present the completed AHA online certificate. Students are encouraged to contact Kerry Wirth, 970-236-0459, for details.

This course will focus on beginning and intermediate rafting skills. All rafting equipment is provided, including life-jackets. *The initial classroom lesson at the Glenwood Center (6/19, 6p) will cover course logistics, equipment, and rafting skills. Three full-day field trips are held on local rivers: 6/22 (8a-5p), 6/29 (8a-6:30p), and 6/30 (8a-6:30p).

Covers the basics of whitewater kayaking including river running skills, boating safety, and an introduction to the kayak roll. Equipment is available to rent from Alpine Kayak for a fee of $75. Minimum age 17. *The pre-class meeting will take place at the CMC Glenwood Center 7/17 at 5p. The second meeting on 7/19 (5p-9p) will be at the Glenwood Rec Center pool. The field weekend dates (7/20 & 7/21, 8a-6p) will take place on local rivers.

This class emphasizes face climbing skills and leading sport routes. Topics will include building anchors and lead climbing on sport routes. The class meets at 8a on 7/12 at the Spring Valley campus but will move to a local climbing area for the remainder of the day (until 6p), and students will spend the entirety of the next two days outside at local climbing areas (7/13 & 7/14, 8a-6p).

This is the first of a four-class climbing series that includes Sport Climbing, Rock II and Climbing Self-Rescue. Topics of instruction include climbing basics: tying knots, belaying, rappelling, and climbing movements. Climbing gear is provided. Minimum age 18. *The class meets at 8a on 6/28 at the Spring Valley Campus but will move to a local climbing area for the remainder of the day (until 6p), and students will spend the entirety of the next two days outside at local climbing areas (6/29 & 6/30, 8a-6p).

Trains and certifies river professionals and recreational users how to handle emergencies and rescue situations on the river. Topics include shallow water crossings, river swims, swimming rescues, shore-based rescues, boat handling and boat-based rescues, equipment and communication in a variety of rescue scenarios. This class includes an overview of permaculture principles plus hands-on experience observing and working with permaculture systems throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Students will work with permaculture practitioners and apply what they learn to design a real space. *This class meets 9a-5p, 6/1-6/3 and 6/8-6/10, and students will also spend time outside of class doing individual study and service at a permaculture site of their choice. This class is open to community members as well as degree-seekers. In this class, students will apply whole-systems thinking to design a permaculture site. Suitable farming or gardening sites will be provided if students do not have their own space.
