PART 2The Part 2 course is also a week long and builds on the foundations of Part 1 tofocus on strategic and business planning, performance and service standards, andthe professional and communicative skills to develop every aspect of both theindividual’s performance and that of their club. At the end of Part 2 there is anoptional examination to attain the CMAE Diploma in Club Management.

PART 1Part 1 is a week long course targeted in particular towards those managers whoare either new to a post, recently appointed or simply want to enhance theirknowledge so that they may better serve their club committee, owners andmembers. At the end of the week, those taking the course will have an excellentgrasp of the basics in every area of club business, and will have established avaluable network of support for their career in this industry.

MANAGEMENTDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMME

The curriculum and learning outcomes have been provided by the Club ManagersAssociation of Europe and this training course is endorsed by the Club ManagersAssociation of America as part of the educational pathway to the CCM qualification.

A BUSINESS PLAN FOR yOUR CLUB Few clubs have carried out a comprehensive analysis of their businesses to enablethem to create a business plan. This course will provide you with the tools to do so,and a simple action plan for taking strategic thinking and business planning intoyour club.

SUCCESSFUL COMMITTEE STRATEGIESHaving clear direction and measurable goals for your club to pursue are keyoutcomes of this course. The other essential component for success in your careeris to ensure that you have the support of your club committee and members. Learnthe 20 lessons that have served successful managers well at successful clubs.

COMMUNICATION AND INFLUENCECommunicating a vision for the club and implementing a strategic plan will requireenhanced communication and influencing skills. This course will provide a strategyfor building relationships in your club at every level to secure the sustainablesuccess of the organization under your leadership.

TEAM BUILDINGThe strength of a team far outweighs that of a group. This course will providemanagers with a thorough understanding of a well balanced team and how eachmember of the team can make a contribution in a club or department. Using thelatest Team Role theories, delegates will learn how to build a high performing teamand how team dynamics can affect your club. Each manager will complete a pre-course questionnaire and the subsequent report will be used as the vehicle for thissession and will give managers a template to take back and use at their club.

MANAGING PERFORMANCEThis session will allow you to evaluate the benefits of performance review at yourclub and provide you with a structured template system and action plan forimmediate implementation. For clubs with a system in place, this session willenhance and re-energise your current practice and thereby improve employeeengagement.

CONDUCT OR CAPABILITy? INVESTIGATING UNDER PERFORMANCEYour staff handbook can guide you through the disciplinary or grievanceprocedures at your club which negatively affect your business. However thissession will teach you to address issues before they reach a crisis by showing youhow to conduct the essential unbiased investigation aimed at positively supportingstaff who may be currently under performing.

PART 2COURSE CONTENT

MANAGEMENTDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMME

SERVICE STANDARDSManagers will discover the importance of a solid customer focused culture at theirclub and learn how to identify and set measurable front of house customer servicestandards. Delegates will ascertain how to use customer feedback to help set andmaintain those values and how to implement an assessment programme to monitorthe staff adherence. Delegates will also find out how to use this programme totrain staff in service standards to achieve consistency throughout the club.

MANAGING CONFLICTThis session will raise the managers’ understanding of the background to conflictand the behaviours they can personally display to prevent escalation of thoseissues which ultimately devour precious time and focus. Managers will learn torecognise their own physical and emotional signals, to help them maintaincomposure no matter what the source of conflict at the club while choosing toadopt a variety of positive protocols and processes.

TIME MANAGEMENTAs the manager is expected to be the “Jack of All Trades” in their club, this coursewill help improve personal effectiveness through better management of personalresources. Delegates will identify barriers to their effectiveness caused bythemselves and others and employ practical techniques to improve productivityand performance.

CASE STUDyThroughout the week of the course delegates will explore a typical club scenario insmall workgroups and be invited to share their evolving views on the challengesfacing this fictitious club, based on the personal learning outcomes of eacheducation session.

OPTIONAL DIPLOMA ExAMINATIONHaving attended Part 1 and Part 2, managers who wish to secure the new CMAEDiploma in Club Management may sit this optional examination. Having deliveredtheir part of a group presentation of the case study, candidates sit a one hourmultiple choice examination which is based on the learning outcomes from bothcourses and some typical experiences facing a modern club manager. A third finalobjective is to show that the theory learned during Part 1 & 2 has been successfullyapplied in the workplace by completing a work based assignment of thecandidates’ choosing. This can be any current and relevant challenge facing themanager at their workplace, stating the current scenario, tools used, evidencecollected and research carried out to consider the possible solutions and selectedoutcome. Delegates must submit this final element of the examination within 90days of completing the course.

Kevin Fish, CCM - Contemporary Club Services LtdKevin has over twenty years of experience in the club industry, including nine years serving as the Manager ofthe Glen GC in North Berwick, during which time he won the UK Club Manager of the Year award & was in thefirst group of Managers to secure the CCM designation in Europe. He spent seven years with the NationalGoverning Body for golf in Scotland where he led a team specializing in supporting golf clubs to take a morebusiness-like approach to their operations through a combination of effective governance, business planningand manager development.

Kevin was the Chairman of the CMAE Education Policy Board that introduced formal structured education tothe club industry in Europe and as the Governance Gatekeeper in Europe consistently achieves high evaluationsfrom delegates across the continent. The IGCMA represents the professional club manager in Ireland. Originallyestablished in 1968, the Association is to the forefront of Education andNetworking opportunities for club managers. Through its membership of CMAE,and its Education partnership with the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI), itoffers the Irish Club industry the opportunity to take the now well establishedManagement Development Program for managers aspiring to learn more abouttheir chosen career. The program leads to the coveted Certified Club Manager(CCM) designation. It has already jointly run two MDP Part 1 programs and 2Food and beverage management programs in 2014/15. It also runs a number ofEducational and networking events through the year.

One of the CGI’s stated aims is to aid “the development and provision of thesuite of club services for golf clubs” which includes providing educationalopportunities for club management and staff.
